Yelp
Surfside excellence, and not to be missed when in Punta Mita. More like 4.5 stars, due to a couple of minor qualms, but with a nod to 5 for the overall quality. Come hungry!
The entrance alone is spectacular, a cascading staircase through a waterfall! You legitimately feel transported into another time; tranquility zone! The restaurant is a short ride from the resorts, into town and the first sight at the bottom of the hill.
We were seated promptly at the water's edge, knowing full well having dined nearby the night before that doing so meant local vendors would be part of our entertainment for the evening. Being a Sunday, they were far fewer in number, and a rope barrier kept them at bay.
Service was prompt and courteous throughout the meal, from drinks to dessert. They generously made me a delicious off-menu mocktail. Prior to our appetizers arriving, a delicious amuse bouche got our appetites fired up: fresh tuna ceviche in an avocado jalapeno sauce, on a cracker. Wonderful. The bread basket was also delicious, especially the one stuffed with cream cheese.
For appetizers, my wife had a delicious chili relleno, while I had their 26-years-on-the-menu crema de langostina and pumpkin soup. Yes it felt like it was 100 degrees out, but the soup is worth the juxtaposition. Outstanding, and it should be on the menu for at least another 26 years. I won't spoil the surprise, but the delivery is a fun experience.
On that note, holy crap it was hot. Yes, we're in Mexico! Been hot all week! Our restaurant the night before, though, had little fans everywhere to circulate the air. Tables along the water in the first row could only sweat and cry jealous tears compared to the tables one row back with their fans.
Our main courses were fortunately as good as the appetizers; I had the fresh catch tuna steak (because, hey, Tuna Blanca means white tuna) and it was possibly the best tuna steak I've ever had. Enormous portion and perfectly cooked. My wife had the not-normally-on-the-menu fresh-caught lobster. Neither of us are really lobster lovers, but this was amazing, including the table-side prep.
Speaking of tableside prep, the Caeser salad is made that way, and looked amazing. Several orders around us made us regret the oversight, not that we had room for an additional course.
For dessert we shared La Maceta, literally a flower pot, with fake flowers, packed with layers of chocolate cake and mousse, topped with crumbled chocolate cake and edible chocolate "rocks." Probably enough for 4 to share, but this pair, undaunted, made a great dent. Our only lament was that it was apparently one of the few deserts not served on a surfboard.
In total, the bill was more than reasonable. The weird finish, though, was what felt like a required quality of service survey we had to complete on a non-cooperative Google tablet. That was simply awkward. I'd recommend the restaurant deliver this as more of an option than as a requirement. They also kindly called us a cab for our ride home, which promptly arrived.
