The 23 Best Things to See and Do in Hong Kong in 2025

"I plan extended hikes on the Tung O Ancient Trail between Tung Chung and Tai O — it’s an almost 15-kilometer route that takes about 5 hours and offers a longer, more immersive island trek." - Matthew Kepnes

It took me 3h11m to complete the trail from Thung Chung to Tai O. Different sceneries along the way and it gets more beautiful as you approach Tai O. It is a long 14km walk, passing through local villages, public toilets and rest areas. At times the road goes straight up and downhill. I encountered many locals and groups hiking this trail.. make sure to be equipped with good shoes and water! Oh, and don’t forget to enjoy the fishing village and its street market at the end!

Nice path and easy to walk. It took me 2.5 hrs walking from the start to the Big buddha. The route are scenic and you could see the airport from above. Don’t forget to bring some water with you. Stay hydrated guys!

Very easy to walk, nice and shaded on most parts, photo points near the end, recommended for beginners that love a bit of stairs and slopes but not too much. You'll see lots of graves from old villagers along the trail though; they don't always have a visible gravestone so just be respectful, don't take photos, take your rubbish with you, and don't open any unknown jars.

One can start from the Yat tung estate in Tung Chung. It will be an easy walk and can return to the starting point say after 4 KM by which time one has crossed the tung chung river, small village and houses, saw the HK International Airport, the over hanging cable cars to the Po lin Monastery, an old temple and rugged quiet beach. Most spectacular scene is the Zhuhai/Macau Bridge. The time used for this 4Km is about 2and half hours. For the adventurous type of hikers about 11 km will get them there to Tai O , one of the oldest fishing villages in HKSAR.

This is a moderate 4+ hour hike. There are very few villages along the route so if you see a place selling water, buy it while you can. The first half from Tung Chung is nothing special with mostly concrete paths, but once you pass a village called Sai Tso Wan or Shui Hau Tsuen (I'm not sure what it's actually called), it gets really pretty and nice. The concrete turns to a dirt path and it is much more enjoyable. And once you arrive in Tai O everything is extremely peaceful and serene. My girlfriend and I combined this hike with Fu Shan, which was a bit of a mistake as we ended up hiking for over 5 hours and we were both exhausted and a little irritable by the end. Also there were a ton of massive spiders the size of my hand spread across the path.

Beautiful trail linking Tung Chung and Tai O. Around 14km and took us (beginner level) around 4 hours to finish. Plenty of little stores along the track which allow you to have a short rest if needed. Beware of the strong sunlight if you're walking in the afternoon.
