Harbor Springs, Michigan Is the Best Small U.S. Town for a Lake Vacation in 2024

"A 20-mile scenic byway along M-119 that begins in town and winds north to Cross Village beneath sun-dappled canopies of cedar, birch and maple, offering peek-a-boo lake vistas and striking seasonal changes—from trillium carpets in spring to creaking lake ice in winter. The drive can be barreled through in roughly 35 minutes or savored with stops at highlights such as a guided-walk nature preserve, a coffee shop known for a maple-mushroom latte and a well-stocked general store selling regional goods." - Leilani Marie Labong Leilani Marie Labong Leilani Marie Labong is a San Francisco-based journalist who focuses on food, design, and travel. This was a really beautiful drive through the Tunnel of Trees. It's a curvy road just be cautious. Great view of Lake Michigan. Lots of big beautiful homes to look at and there were black squirrels everywhere and they are so cute. I enjoyed this scenic road trip a lot.

My partner and I took a drive through here in late October, from Mackinaw City, starting in Cross Village and heading south to Harbor Springs. Not only was the foliage breathtaking, we also had so many beautiful views of Lake Michigan from the bluffs. I would highly recommend this route along 119 for any nature lover or outdoor photography enthusiast. Won't be our last time seeing.

Went for a beautiful drive through the trees. Was shocked most of the curvy road was 45mph and people wanted to go faster. Made me very nervous. 😬 Trees were beautiful though. Will definitely do it again.

Beautiful place. The route was interesting. It was a highway with traffic in both directions but no center yellow line! I stayed in Petoskey. It was great! Views of Lake Michigan! Stunning!

One of the most beautiful rides in Michigan, really wish there were a few more vendors but it was the last weekend, and the coffee shop was so cute.

We went the second weekend of October, and there was still a little green left in the trees. Despite that, it was a beautiful experience! I loved stopping at Lake Michigan and rock hunting! I love the little shops along the drive, too.

Lovely drive through a tunnel of trees by Little Traverse Bay. We stopped in Good Hart where there are a couple of gift shops, a coffee shop, and a General store. Quaint little blip in the road.

We've done this tour with so many friends. Cruised with our 65 Ford falcon, rode the twist and turns on our motorcycle and this year we went in our 2010 Camero! Every single time it never disappoints. Great food, wonderful pictures and excellent fellowship. Don't miss a chance to experience this trip.
