8 Amazing Canoe Trips in the United States | Travel + Leisure

"Thrill seekers will find their match on the Tuolumne River, which runs through deep gorges and forests on its way from the high Sierra Nevadas to the Central Valley. Along the way, you’ll be treated to wildlife sightings and excellent trout fishing as you navigate your way around Class IV rapids. Although the Tuolumne put-in is near Yosemite, the 149-mile body of water doesn’t have too much boating traffic, thanks to regulations on the number of trips permitted to launch each day." - Evie Carrick Evie Carrick Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. It's free to come in. There are plenty of places to find that are peaceful. There are public restrooms and free parking. The water is very cold and abundant, swift moving currents remind one they should always wear a life jacket.

Escape the hustle and bustle of city life or evade the monotony of suburbia. Many possible way to enjoy this public resource from paddling to swimming, hiking or running, and I tell you there is more. For me nothing quite like a dip and then to soak up the sunshine! Viva California!

Great river. Have to be careful, especially if you have small children. They can get swept under by the currents very easily. The water is very cold so be prepared for it.

Alot of wildlife around busy preparing for winter. Very peaceful in this chaotic world. The trash is unreal. Wish wildlife didn't have to deal with our problems.

This place is so very special! I'd give it 5 stars were it not for the mosquitos, which are quite voracious! So tranquil, with lots of wildlife...I once saw a 7 point whitetail buck on opposing side of river. So majestic, his prodigious antlers all lit up, his eyes keenly watching me. We also found a natural whirlpool spot on the river, where water circled around a rock, creating soothing pulses of water that caressed our tired feet.

Camped at Turlock lake and the river runs along the campsite. Lots of boating and kayaking here. But the river is too fast moving to go in. However at the campsite is a boat ramp. It isn't used but it is beautiful to sit at and fish.

There is a nice, quiet park at Fox Grove. You can fish and swim in the river here. There are sandy beaches and shallows for the children to play in. I have spent many an idyllic summer day there, laying in the sun, swimming in the river. There's also a boat launch.

Great area to hike not too far outside of Groveland and near Yosemite. No crowds. Nice visuals and the sound of the rushing river is very relaxing.
