On the Grid : The Turning Point

"The Turning Point boasts Ottawa’s best used music and movie selection, offering quality titles at affordable prices since 1983. Their second floor is home to an enormous catalogue of LP’s—all in great shape. It’s worth a visit just to check out the vintage memorabilia hanging on the walls, but clear your schedule because you may spend hours searching for hidden gems. Their friendly, knowledgable staff and independent DIY atmosphere is what makes this one of the most charming spots in Ottawa to get your entertainment fix." - Shopify

Had some unexpected free time this weekend, and as I had never been in this record store before I decided to pay them a visit. Went upstairs first to check out their massive selection of used albums. Didn't quite find what I was looking for, but I did score a few good ones. The prices are extremely reasonable and when you can walk out the door with five decent albums for under $50 I couldn't have been happier. Overall it was a good first visit.

Love the vinyl selection and prices. Vinyl records are cleaned and inner sleeves are changed. Love it. Just wish the price sticker was on plastic sleeves insted of directly on the sleeve. It's really hard to remove without damaging the sleeve

This shop has character, selection cross media types, great service and is well organized. Definitely some love went into this place. Have bought and sold, it’s always fair and the staff informative. My absolute favourite thing is stepping back into a time where things were tangible, this shop has the vibe!! Warning- can lose track of time here.

I am pretty regular at Turning Point, and never once has it been a bad experience. On top of an amazing selection no matter what media form you are into (mostly the movies for me) they have a large library with some crazy hidden gems. The staff are fantastic too in both their music choices playing in the shop to how helpful and kind they are to their patrons. Thanks for my favourite location to walk to on a day off!

First shop I popped into, in Ottawa and ya know, it's a fun shop. Now I didnt find anything for myself but the owner was awesome, talked for a good 20 minutes, so despite coming out empty handed, my heart was filled ;)

I was visiting from Vancouver for 24 hours and popped in to Turning Point. Amazing collection of vintage vinyl at great prices! And super friendly people too! Ended up buying Count Basie and Aretha Franklin albums!

EDIT: I had a great conversation with the owner of the store Nick, and I felt he addressed my concerns seriously enough that I've changed my review. He went into great depth investigating what happened and righting any wrongs, and I respect that deeply. Amazing selection of music at the store, if you're a fan of older music I couldn't recommend it more. The store itself has a very cozy atmosphere - easy to spend time in, easy to walk around in, easy to want to spend money in (especially with how amazing the prices are; EASILY half of what most record stores charge). For some reason though, the clerk at the front just really did not like me. I guess it's because i'm young and dont have much money to spend, but I tried to buy something everytime I went in there so I didnt waste their time. Every question I gave him was met with a very curt response or just outright frustration and hostility. I like going to stores like this in large part because of the chance to meet kind, knowledgeable people who have a lot of things to pass on about mediums of art that have largely fallen out of style, and I was met with a concrete wall and a cash register. Also got banned from the store for entering a restricted area. Not part of my rating because that was completely just me being stupid and impulsive, but considering I left my bag by the front and had been a paying customer, it contributes to the feeling that the guy hated me and wanted me gone, and I cant understand why. I can understand teenagers switching over to just streaming and downloading if this is the environment in a brick and mortar

My favourite record store! Neat finds, friendly and fun staff. Adore that it’s local and not a chain. Love it :)

Yelp
I guess I jinxed my experience because I walked in with such high hopes. Don't get me wrong - it's a fine music shop. I just didn't find the gems that I thought I would discover. The selection was OK and reasonably priced, but it's nothing that will knock your socks off (for me and my musical tastes). Maybe you will find something to your liking - there are two floors in this shop to check out. I would recommend going here to look around if you are in the area.

Yelp
Turning Point is one of the best music stores if you're looking for a wide selection. They have two floors of 20,000 titles, including 10,000 LPs on their second floor. They offer music from every genre and strive to sell hard to find music rather than mainstream CDs you could find anywhere in the city. Prices of LPs are generally $4-$6 and CDs range from $4-$11. If you're looking to sell, they claim to be one of the highest buyers of used CDs, records and movies. Turning Point also has a huge selection of DVDs and some VHS all categorized by genre. Their prices are reasonable with DVDs costing about $10 and VHS costing $2. You can sometimes find a rare film here, but their selection is mainly what you'd find in HMV.

Yelp
This is by far one of my favorite spots to get used music. They have the perfect balance of price to quality, and always a great selection. Friendly and knowledgeable staff are the icing on the cake!

Yelp
I've been in a few times and have generally been happy. I have found the staff to be friendly and definitely don't pressure. The atmosphere seems pretty relaxed. Turning Point has a pretty large selection of media (DVD, Blu-Ray, LPs, CDs...). Prices are reasonable. I've sold a few DVDs there and they prices they offer have been very fair. If you want a traditional music store experience then check this place out. To me this place feels very High Fidelity-ish... minus the kooky staff. :D

Yelp
The Turning Point is a nice, little mixed media shop found just off Bank. Their new vinyl section is meager and primarily jazz/soul oriented. Their used section is larger but doesn't turn over that quickly. Their 'new' used vinyl is on the main floor but they have much more upstairs. They also carry a lot of used CDs and DVDs. Yelp
Fantastic store! Great atmosphere, with great music playing while you're looking through their music collection! Extremely nice and knowledgeable staff. I was only in town for a night and I'm so glad that I stopped in! Prices are great as well! If I'm ever back again, I'll be sure to stop in!

Yelp
I finally went it was great I got my Bryan Adams lp and a Boston one and a trooper One. Next Time I'm going to bring a list if bands so I will walk out with more records the reason I'm saying this because they don't have every band on a little bookmark thing. I wanted to walk out with some Led Zeppilin but all they had was single Robert plant albums (they probably just sell out fast). To find the trooper album I had to go downstairs and then I found it in the new arriveles bin. In collecters corner by the cash they had some ok 45s they were each 50cents but they did not have great ones the best one I found was Loverboy which had "loving every minute of it" and some other song that was crap. Some 45s didn't even have a sleeve over them but that's what you get for 50 cents.Overall it's was a good experiance. Also if you are near there the first Saturday of may just go down the street and you get free comics I went yesterday and got about 20. Thank you retro lovers. ps: if your near kingston soon go to Brians record opt. It's a little messy but they have great records.

Yelp
I've been to The Turning Point many times and I've always been happy. They have a great selection of records, CD's and DVD's and the prices are really good. There is a very relaxed atmosphere and the staff is always helpful - not pushy at all. I always recommend the store to my collector friends coming in from out of town. Great place with a very cool vibe.

Yelp
As an avid collector of Vinyl The Turning Point is Hands Down the best!!! Store layout is user friendly and the quality and pricing is fantastic!!! My only complaint is that each and every visit to Ottawa ,and subsequently to The Turning point, leaves my bank account about $100 lighter!!!!
