We had been booked into another hotel in the Tortuguero area, but that booking had to be changed due to unforeseen circumstances. So we were moved here. It's a lodge but felt more like a resort. It had a pool, a beach, a restaurant and bar and offered tours of the Park next door. You have to take a boat to get here and for the tours. This hotel was part of our G Adventures tour of Costa Rica.|The room was large with 2 beds and a bathroom. We were a fair distance from the main building. It was very quiet, so quiet that the monkeys and birds woke us up at 6 every day. Nevertheless we slept well|The food was above average and was a mix of local and European cuisine. The bar was expensive, but the cocktails were inventive. |We did 2 tours. The jungle tour was short but had the bonus of seeing some Boat-Billed Herons. The jungle boat tour also had a lot of birds.

I have lost track, but I believe this was our 10th visit to this property. We have returned so many times because it is our favourite place in Costa Rica. It has a remote location, nicely removed from the other lodges closer to the village of Tortuguero. The wildlife is amazing and we enjoyed green & scarlet macaws, spider & howler monkeys, kingfishers, and many other birds & creatures during our four-night stay. The staff are wonderful - special shout-outs to our guides Fernando (he is the very best!), Melissa, & Kevin, boat captains Augusto, Marlon, & Jose, and Checko & Encelmo for keeping the grounds in such great shape. Be sure to take the day-break boat tours for great wildlife viewing as well. Thanks to all for another amazing visit. See you next time!

This is truly the worst hotel I've ever visited. It was so bad it is difficult to know where to start. From the beginning: arrival by boat and a welcome non-alcoholic punch was welcome. However, it was a good 200m from the arrival jetty to the reception and no baggage trolleys or help was available - they don't provide for this service! The room was very dark. No air-conditioning anywhere in the hotel, nowhere, even though it was over 30 degrees and humidity was in the high 90s. We had 2 low speed and ineffective fans, controlled by one on/off switch. One lady I spoke to suffered from heat-stroke and although we've lived in hot and humid climates for years, we were very uncomfortable. There were no windows in the rooms, just very dense mesh. No water or tea facilities in the room - no water, wth!! No maid service throughout our entire stay, the room was never cleaned or beds made (there was nothing to replenish so I can't complain about that!). Hot and cold water were provided from a machine at the reception. Probably the worst aspect, even given the appalling rooms, was the food. It was appalling cooked, massively over-cooked or raw, and everything swimming in water. The food was dished out by the staff who must have been told that they could eat the non-dispensed food, as you served miniscule portions, at every meal. At lunch and dinner no coffee or tea was available. The food was simply the worst I've ever been served, by quite a margin, and bear in mind that there are no other food outlets available. The location is great, but if you must visit this area give this place a very wide berth. I'm not exaggerating in my review, I've been a world traveller for nearly 50 years and have been to plenty of out of the way rough places, but to put it in context: the food and often the accommodation I experienced in tea houses in the Nepalese Himalayas far exceeded the standards of this dump!

Remember that you are here for the experience and the remoteness. A 4 hour drive and two hour boat ride. It’s a rustic lodge in the middle of the remote jungle. Rooms are basic, open air (no air conditioning) screens. It is hot and humid here and you only have a fan and if there is a breeze. You will hear everything including sounds of jungle and your neighbor’s, not real private. Can’t swim in ocean and pool warm. The food is good and plentiful but basic. The staff and guides were excellent, friendly and helpful. I agree with another reviewer that he was glad that it was only a two night stay given that it was uncomfortable in extreme heat.

Lodge is rustic as you are in the middle of nowhere but it is was we expected. No window just mosquitoes screens. Small and modest rooms. Adequate food and a great bar for drinks at a very reasonable price. We saw so many animals on our first 2 days

Rooms here are very basic, dated and uncomfortable, there is no privacy as the walls are so thin, curtains have to be closed at all times to afford any privacy. Shower is very poor, low pressure, shower head to low to use properly and had the added experience of multiple insects using the facilities. There are no options for food other than what is provided on site which consists of beans and rice and some form of protein for each meal. During our visit the property was occupied by a school party of very unruly students screaming and shouting at all times. Perhaps they should concentrate on one market and not offer it for adult parties. Would avoid this place, the images must have been taken a long time ago as it is no reflection on how bad this place is.

Don't go to this hotel! If your tour have this stay, please ask them to change it! There're many hotels and lodges have the same nature environment but this Lodge is awful, actually not safe because I know some guests got heat stroke because of the room. It's impossible to cool down when you have no windows, only mosquito netting, ceiling fan with no speed control! Food was awful, staff only give you half of a serving spoon full of hard rice or bean, rock hard pork chop, watery pasta it is just awful!

We stayed at Turtle Beach Lodge as our first stop on our honeymoon tour of Costa Rica. We’d been told to expect it to be basic, but I have to say we were pleasantly surprised. It is in such a fantastic, albeit remote location and the boat journey to get there is an experience in itself - some of the wildlife we saw on the way to the hotel is pictured. Expect to eat a lot of rice and beans, but all of good quality. The staff are all very friendly and the rooms kept impeccably clean. Doing an early morning boat trip and guided walking tour through the jungle are both highly recommended during your stay too.
