10 Best Boston Winter Activites, From Curling to Rooftop Happy Hour in Igloos | Condé Nast Traveler

"A cold-weather craft day shines at this Allston studio, where you can dabble in poured art, phone-case making, and beading, but the star is rug tufting: using a tufting gun to punch loops of yarn through stretched fabric to build a plush pile into any shape you like. With what feels like endless yarn colors and popular motifs from strawberries and flowers to cartoons and pets, small rugs (about 17 by 17 inches) take roughly two and a half hours, while larger pieces can run four hours or more." - Madeline Bilis

I visited today for a tufting session and had such an amazing experience! The staff were incredibly patient, friendly, and helpful throughout the whole process. Even as a beginner, they guided me step by step and made sure I felt comfortable and confident. The service was excellent, the atmosphere was great, and everything was just perfect. I’m very happy with my final piece and would definitely come back again. Highly recommended! ❤️

Google
We did the rug tufting as a team building activity, and it was a fun time! I would recommend it. We got tired from the small rug so I'm glad we weren't overly ambitious in doing a bigger rug 😅 My pompompurin's hat was over trimmed but still looks like pom pom so it's ok.

I just had the most exciting experience at Tutuland for my very first arts and crafts project! I had an absolute blast! The staff were incredibly friendly and super helpful, always patient with me even when I kept making mistakes. I can’t wait to return!

Google
This place is more than amazing! You can come out with the most beautiful creation and about 2 to 3 hours. The staff is so friendly the place is so much fun. It is just really good to check out and do something for your mental health. You get to leave with a beautiful piece that is a souvenir from the most wonderful city!

Google
Absolutely loved! Arrived at 11:30 and didn’t finish till 8! Super grateful that we weren’t kicked out. They also helped with the details at the end, which was very important and needed!

My friends and I had such an amazing time at Tutuland. We tufted two medium rugs and a couple of friendship bracelets. The staff were friendly and they helped when we needed them. An incredible bonding experience while creating something with your own two hands!

Google
Super fun and easy to get creative! So many possibilities. Great date place too. Staff was helpful without hovering 😄

Google
Fun and lengthy experience. Good indoor activities. Staff was very helpful because my rug was hard to tuft.

Yelp
Had a very fun time making my rug. The team was so positive and energetic, and were helping during every step of the process! I was shocked how "easy" it was to make the rug-I attribute some of that to the staff hosting such a strong tutorial. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
This was such a fun time and the staff were super helpful! It's well worth the price and you will walk out was a great piece of art. The tutorial from the instructors was very simple and they took their time to make sure you were ready to go off and work on your own design.

Yelp
Great service. Overpriced for the activity. Very hard to add the paint to the syringe.

Carlos D.

Yelp
Fun and affordable. The staffs are very kind and helpful. Had a great time and will be back

Yelp
We had a great experience here! The staff is very helpful and kind. My mother also forgot her cell phone in the store and they stayed for us to run back and pick it up.

Yelp
Tutuland is the place to go, if you enjoy arts and craft... or just want to make a rug! They offer rug tufting, decorating your own phone case with charms & etc , and pour painting. It was my first time and I decided to tuft a hello kitty rug and it took approximately 4-5-ish hours or so to complete it. We were able to walk in and tuft since they were not too busy that day. The workers are super helpful and teach you how to tuft. After they see that you can tuft straight lines in the demo, they allow you to tuft your rug on your own. They still offer help if you need assistance with tufting and walk around every few minutes just to make sure you doing okay. This was a great experience and I would totally come back again in the future !

Yelp
Employees were very attentive and came over immediately if you had any questions or need assistance. They had you practice a few methods prior to starting. We went with the rug tufting activity, which was fun and I learned I don't quite have the patience for it. However, I'd try it again now that I've made one rug. It definitely can be tiring on the hands and takes a few hours so not something that can be rushed. You can choose any design you'd like as long as you have a photo and they can project it from your phone to outline. At the end they put a non-slip backing. They offer other activities too, great place to go on a rainy or cold day or whenever one is feeling crafty!

Yelp
Such a cute spot for tufting, paint pouring and phone case creation! I only tried tufting but the other crafts look like so much fun and I'd definitely want to try. For tufting, you make a res online with a small deposit for either a small or large rug. Small is typically done alone and I saw a lot of couples doing larger pieces together. You can either come with your own designs (which they'll project onto a screen for you to trace) or choose from their selection. Once you've settled in, they'll give you a quick tutorial on how to tuft and let you do a few practice tufts as they give you guidance. You're then largely left to your own devices for the next 2 or so hours as you select colors and put your pattern onto the screen. It wasn't that hard (just tiring doing it for so long), and I saw a lot of younger (maybe 12 or so) kids there doing it too. I am so happy with how my rug turned out and impressed by their selection of colors. Staff were also very nice and helpful in the beginning when I was practicing and their tips were critical to me figuring out how to tuft my design. I got a small this time but may opt for a larger one if I were to come again!!

Yelp
Fun crafting shop if you ever wanted try some trendy crafts. The staff were helpful in teaching basics of tufting but it's definitely a learn as you go kinda deal. After the intro, you're pretty much on your own which is nice because it doesn't feel like you're being watched. My only recommendation is to look up something you want to make before you get there. I went here for a date night and we were able to work on the same piece which was a cute activity to do together.

Yelp
I came here with my 3 friends last weekend and we had a blast. it's a small place but we had a reservation to make phone cases. It was so fun. there were thousands of charms to pick from and the girl working was super helpful. They were playing great music and overall the vibes were awesome. I felt like the pricing of the phone case was fair and it seemed like a popular place I would definitely come back.

Yelp
Fun hands on day date. Choose your art prior to arrival. I made the mistake of choosing upon arrival which cost me some time as i was very picky. You get a mini lesson and demo before you start which is great for practice. Everything is customizable and you can choose from several sizes. I chose the small rug as this was my first time. Glad I did because I felt like I had arthritis 30 minutes in. (Bring some ibuprofen). Tip: Do a simple design if this your first time. It was slightly harder than it looks.

Yelp
What a great time at Tutuland, making rugs. The staff is super nice and helpful. They teach you to do tufting and you'll get the hang of it. The entire process is pretty easy and will take at least 2.5 hours depending on the size of the drug and how complicated is your design. Note that it is very busy on the weekend. Therefore recommend to make reservations instead of walk in. Can't wait to return

Yelp
Really fun spot to bring a couple of friends! It's a small environment, but once you have a spot, it is fun. They provide some instruction at the beginning and the rest is all on your own. The tufting instrument was pretty easy to handle, and the activity was relaxing. They helped us cut out and paste on a backing to our rugs. It's a very popular spot so definitely arrive much earlier than you think or call ahead for a reservation. Even with a reservation, we weren't able to start when we expected, but it was overall a good experience.

Qiuyang W.

Yelp
Super cool experience for tufting, pouring art and decoden arts around Boston Area. We do need to make appointments online to secure our spots since they are too popular. Store staff are very nice and instructive. And there are so many selections that you can make there.

Yelp
This is one of the best experiences I've had! A small takes about 2-3 hrs depending on your design. A bigger one takes 3-4 hrs but they do let you come back and finish your project! All of the staff are so friendly and helpful. This is not too difficult to do and they teach you the techniques before you start and help you through the entire process. This is a great group activity or individual project! Overall, highly recommend!!

Yelp
literally if your not going to do a rug I wouldn't go. I wanted to make a phone case but all they had was like these random characters, a few hello kitty ones but there was like no fake pearls, butterflies, or flowers. The drawers were basically empty where they kept the charms. I ended up just doing a bear keychain just because I went all the way there.

Yelp
Cute date night! We came here on a Friday night, it was easy to make an appointment or you can just walk-in. We picked medium size bear and finished within 30mins. You can come back to pick up the bear after 2-3 days.

Yelp
Super cool place!!! I was able to explore my inner artist! Really a place for craft lovers! They have several arts and crafts in addition to carpet making!

Yelp
Shit talked my friend's decoden in chinese as if I couldnt understand them the whole time. Materials were dry and service poor. No basic charms really. Very sad

A M.

Yelp
I chose to do a decoden project. Staff are friendly and very helpful and very willing to give tips on how to frost and place charms. There are a wide variety of charms to choose from and a ton of different base items to decorate. It came out really well and I will 100% come back. It was a little expensive all together but the experience really made it worth it.

Yelp
I booked this for my boyfriend's birthday and we had such a blast! The staff was so polite and helpful! They walked us through the whole process and were fun and supportive as we learned! There was an amazing selection of yarn and a variety of art to create! We will absolutely be returning again this place was amazing!

Kelsey C.

Yelp
They did a great job helping our group with a mix of Deaf individuals. We loved the place and was very cute and had lots of fun here. Great music and atmosphere !! Will be back!

Kayla Marie C.

Yelp
Went on a field trip. The workers were super friendly and helpful with our deaf students. They had amazing time. They can't wait to put their rugs in their bedroom.

Yelp
We were a group of 5 tweens with 3 adults to assist the kids. We almost didn't go based on the negative review about the place being crowded and no employees to assist. We figured we would take a shot anyway and so glad we did. Although there were many people there for rug tufting and acrylic pour our group had plenty of room and there were multiple employees to assist when we had questions and they were so pleasant. We will definitely be back so the adults can make some rugs too!

Yelp
TUTULAND IS NOT CLOSED. I WAS JUST THERE YESTERDAY. Tutuland is absolutely amazing! I had an issue with my tufting gun and the owner took his time to try and troubleshoot and fix the issue. He was kind, patient and even explained everything to me along the way. In the end it turned out the gun was unfixable but he spent the better part of an hour giving it his all. I ended up buying a replacement from him and returning the gun I purchased to Amazon. It works soooo much better and runs smoother. If you want to learn how to tuft rugs, don't hesitate to go to Tutuland. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the vibes are awesome.

Yelp
This place was so disappointing. I got really excited seeing a new craft shop opening up in Allston, but was immediately disappointed after five minutes of stepping inside. Firstly, the place was so crowded. For a shop that requires a reservation ahead of time you would think that everything would be organized, it's not... It was a struggle to even walk into the store and check in. It was so crowded to the fact I was constantly bumping into people. When I finally flagged down an employee after ten minutes they sat us down at an area. I was then told to pick out the charms I wanted to decorate with. When I went back to my table two other customers were sitting in my seat (which I placed my bag next too) I hunted down the employee and told him about the situation, but instead of giving me my seat back, they made me sit in the carpenter area. This would've been no problem except for the fact that I was decorating a box with the paint, and the shaking from other customers making rugs was very disruptive and annoying. There were pieces of yarn flying into my painting, and a lot of the glue from the carpet was getting on my clothes. Secondly, the resources and materials are limited and pricey. I had a hard time choosing what to make because most of the things to decorate are expensive and look cheap. The glass series looks like little children toys and the hair clips were so small too. The charms to decorate everything with were cute, but most of them were out of stock. In addition, more than half of the charms are pink. There was barely any other colors or types of charms. Similarly, the paint to decorate with only come in a select amount of colors and once it's gone, it's gone. Having a restricted color set was definitely a set back to the experience. Lastly, as I've mentioned before there is so much lack of attention. You have to literally hunt down the employees if you want anything to be done, or else they will forget about you. As a first (and last) time customer, I had a lot of questions on pricing and the variety of things we could paint. The employee's were not helpful at all, and left every chance they got. When it came to decorating, the employee's just gave me the materials and I was on my own after that. Overall, this place was terrible and I would not recommend anyone else to come here. Not only is it expensive, but the lack of attention and space is not something you should waste your time on.

Yelp
Amazing idea so fun and the employees are the most helpful individuals highly recommend

Yelp
Super fun and surprisingly challenging. Time flies and you leave with a super practical and aesthetic piece! It is on the pricey end and can take up to 2 hours to complete a rug. Nonetheless a splendid way to spend the afternoon!

Summer_Jay C.

Yelp
the service was amazing and tbh I love using my hands to create and have fun at the same time. everyone in there was amazing and so helpful to me and my friend! i have a video to match it. check it out: Tik tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@summer_jay1/video/7331869785073929518?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7303675962913359402

Yelp
Fun activities overall but I felt as if it was very biased they allowed some people to do designs for rugs and didn't allow others they wouldn't let you do a design you you brought yourself but if someone else did they would and it felt like their designs were way more complicated I don't know their true reasonings for the bias but it felt unfair and made me not want to return overall fun experience but if I'm paying the amount of money you do you should be able to do designs that you choose like everyone else. And no I don't think the designs and issue or your beginner level I saw beginners doing way more complicated designs that they wouldn't allow other people I noticed.

Rosalyn R.

Yelp
Where shall I begin, first and foremost I should have turned around and gone home upon walking in ... it was extremely packed and there was no direction as to who to check in with and no one really explained the process , people were everywhere and you had to constantly say "excuse me" because again it was cramped in there. I was not from the area and I drove almost 2hrs so I wasn't going to pass up what I thought would be a good experience. Anyways, the person or should I say child giving up the tutorial was rude and inpatient. This was my first time And I was expecting because I made a reservation someone to explain how complex it can be, assist in choosing a pic as a first timer and ensure someone was around to help and answer questions. It was nearly impossible to get someone's attention, there was a staff standing behind us however he was too busy playing around or fixing a tufting machine. When I was outlining my design I struggled because their sharpies suck however someone did notice and gave me a new one. While I was tracing my design people kept bumping into it disconnecting it (again cramped in there) . The whole experience was a nightmare let's not forget they have no parking available and of course it was Boston so no need to say more. I should have stuck with creating a bear .. but wait there's more if you create one you have to go back in 3 days to pick it up ... like what! I just drove almost 2 hrs and I have to go back . Immediately NO ! Yeah if you live in Boston go for it however definitely not worth driving there . Also just to point out they make you sign a waiver but no one explained it on top of that . I didn't like my project ... it's embarrassing and they even said they fixed it shame on them for allowing me to walk out with a disaster ... also please please read the policy wherever it is I don't recall seeing it on the website ( UPDATE: no policy or waiver info on website) . This place needs a bigger area for the project the idea is good but the execution from the owner is terrible. Hope this helps someone else before I wasted my time , not to mention I know someone who also had a bad experience but I found out after the fact. I would save the money and go to a sip and paint instead or whatever floats your boat. Doesn't even deserve one star, won't let me remove it .

Yelp
so i brought my fiancé here for her birthday and is was an awsome experience and definitely coming back again staff was awsome and always there to help. music and vibes are great just you reallly get i to what your working on

Siobhan H.

Yelp
Fun place to go with friendly helpful staff. Beginner friendly! Would love to come back here again.

Khadia B.

Yelp
Fun, nice environment & staff are super helpful and friendly. I came in to make a rug and staff helped every step of the way showing me how to make it and giving helpful tips!

Erica M.

Yelp
This is mainly a tufting place. They do NOT care about the other activities they offer. if you come for decoden, a lot of their frostings are dried out / empty / small selection ig. Most of their charms are out of stock -- like I don't think they've restocked since they opened. They also don't have a designated decoden place and convert the tufting tables into a decoden area so people/the staff could be tufting and shaking the whole table while you're trying to decorate/use the frosting. In my case, it was the staff and I found it extremely rude. There was a shocking lack of tools to help you. Also, they definitely should've separated tufting from the other activities (at least in a different room) because it's extremely loud. The music did not help (Pop Smoke while crafting is something else). LASTLY, the bathroom was an actual sewage dump. It's Boston so I'm not expecting a five star bathroom, but be my guest if you want to walk through partially flooded ground. Was it the leaking sink? Was it the dirty mop bucket? Or was it just the staffs inability and laziness to clean because this place is clearly an overrated disaster. If you want a better, more calming crafting/decoden experience either (1) order charms and frosting online from AliExpress or (2) go to cuteshouse in Queens, NY (also has tufting!) if you're ever in the city. ++++ Phone cases at the NY crafting place is only $2 more AND the phone cases have protective bumpers on the side VS tutuland gives you a cheap flimsy one with nothing.
