20 Best Small Towns in Australia

"Nestled in the wide, flat Tweed Valley, surrounded by mountain ranges and sugar cane plantations, 'Murbah' is a spectacularly pretty place. Home to one of Australia's best regional galleries — the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre — its thriving arts scene recently expanded to include the excellent M-Arts Precinct." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Such a beautiful gallery, we accidentally found it. I have wanted to visit Margaret Olley Gallery since it opened in 2014. I wasn't disappointed at all. The essence of Margaret Olley is presented well here, and one can feel Margaret Olley in her rooms.

Couldn’t believe it, spoiled and impressed, what a hidden gem, upon entry at first it’s very much like many other modern or contemporary galleries, beautiful, however, the views and location are stunning, and it’s no until you get to the back of the gallery and enter into a very unique and personal experience where you are faced with an almost entire house replicated with in the gallery of a famous local female artist, Margaret Olley. Entire rooms from her home have been somehow moved or relocated or something into the gallery and, it’s hard to explain but definitely a must see for any one, young, old and indifferent. Thank you for this experience, amazing!!!! Plenty of parking, cafe and picnic areas, interesting and incredible experience. Wheelchair accessible with elevators etc and drive direct to doors on both sides, cafe also.

If I could give this gallery 10 stars I would. We went on a Sunday morning and joined the 11.30am tour with Hella. Wonderfully comprehensive, starting with Margaret Olley’s house recreation. And going on to a curated wall including a Monet and 3 Margaret Olley originals! A Monet in Murwillumbah! You can even buy a book bag with this on it. Fantastic gallery, incredible views, great location, and it’s free. Take a jumper, it’s absolutely freezing in the gallery and you won’t want to rush through as there’s so much to see. We went to Murwillumbah for lunch afterwards, I’d recommend you check the open times if you have a particular cafe in mind, we got caught out being a Sunday afternoon. I’ve seen the Margaret Olley Archibald Prize winning portrait when it was at GOMA in Brisbane, but now it feels like she has made her way to her rightful home at the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre. Highly, highly recommend. I’ll be going back.

Visited gallery today. It's an amazing gallery with spectacular views across the river & area. Exhibitions hung at present are well worth the trip. Ben Quilty Archibald Margaret Ollie portrait an amazing addition. Truely a gem of culture in the middle of the bush. Well worth the trip from anywhere. Do yourself a favour.

The spider exhibit was amazing in addition to the Margaret Olley exhibit that houses Margaret's work. The views from each window just capture more art in the galley.

We loved the Margaret Olley exhibition. It was beautifully presented telling the story of her amazing life. Seeing a set-up of her house/art studio and a short movie gave a great insight into her painting. It was great to also see the still life paintings by Ben Quilty. We also enjoyed the 2025 photographic portraits entered in the Olive Cotton award. The cafe was also great and loved the outdoor sculpture overlooking the green hills shrouded in mist. We arrived at 10.15am and parking was plentiful.

Google
This was really great. A large part is dedicated to Margaret Olley. And they have replicated her home. There are some very interesting exhibits on displace. Particularly the state flower exhibit. It was nice to see something from the national art gallery there. Would love to see more of this. Cafe is lovely, gluten free options are plentiful! The views are stunning!

Yelp
Want to see a recreation of great Australian artist Margaret Olley's Sydney studio? Just want to take in the serene and picturesque landscape and glimpses of Mt Warning from the leather armchairs in the gallery foyer? Care for a devonshire tea or hunger busting burger on the adjoining gallery cafe with a view to match? Answer yes to any of the above and a visit to Tweed River Art Gallery might be just the addition to a day trip you're looking for. Located just off the main road in Murwillumbah, the gallery largely dedicated to the works of Margaret Olley is, much like the surrounding landscape, a peaceful and calming spot to spend an hour or so.

Yelp
We had zero expectations of coming here but it was very well setup. The Margaret Olley exhibition is incredibly detailed, so if you are a fan you will love it - and if you don't know who that is, you'll be well informed by the time you leave. If you come here for other artists, they have a discreet number of changing exhibits along the one long hallway and they have set it up very well. Lots of Australian artists which we love, and some really unique stuff you'll enjoy. Facilities are clean and modern and the outlook from the gallery into a valley is remarkable.

Yelp
Wow what a place. This art gallery is so wonderful and the café is the perfect accompaniment to the gallery. I visited by chance - we had a work meeting and it was moved from Council chambers to the more picturesque Art Gallery. Little did I know that it is now the home to Margaret Olley's house. I seriously must have been living under a rock - how did I not know that Margaret's home and studio was now a work of art?! The whole kitchen, living room and yellow room of her Paddington home was donated, packed up, shipped and reassembled to a new Tweed Art Gallery home. Everything is as exactly as it was. They have even left the cobwebs on the doors! Yes, the cobwebs are original!! I was told by a local to check out the placemats on Margaret's table. Look a bit closer if you can.. Susie the Art Director is magnificent. Susie always has a selection of works from local artists at the gallery. I was intrigued by Michael T (Barrister by day, photographer by night) photographs which were on exhibition at the time. The cafe I mentioned in my opening paragraph is set outside on a large enclosed balcony. I highly recommend the cafe for a cup of coffee or bite to eat. I was pleasantly surprised by the tasty food that was served on their lunch menu. Halfway through our lunch the heavens decided to open up and the rain poured down. The picturesque setting was brought to life with the rain dancing over the green rolling hills. Oh how I love the smell of rain! Can you tell I loved every moment of my visit?!
