On the Grid : Twelve Triangles

"Twelve Triangles is a coffee, doughnut, and bakery heaven found on Portobello High Street. This delightful little shop first blessed Portobello High Street in 2016 when it opened after the success of its sister shop in Edinburgh. The joy in picking your bread, doughnut, or pastry from the shop window is both beautiful and dangerous. The journey of choosing the perfect looking doughnut for that Instagram shot, combined with the freedom of shoving as many pastries as you can into your brown paper bag is not for the weak-willed! Coffee at Twelve Triangles is provided by the excellent Williams and Johnson of Leith and the equally excellent Fortitude of Edinburgh, both fantastic local roasters. Alongside their home-baked breads and pastries, you’ll find spreads such as peanut butter and caramel, homemade jam, local farm eggs, and gorgeous tote bags to take it all home. You can thank me later." - Sarah Wardlaw

"This has to be one of the best bakeries in the city, with excellent breads & pastries - the charcoal sourdough loaf being a stand-out. It's got a real neighbourhood vibe, with regulars coming in every day for a coffee and a sweet treat. Their Duke Street outlet is a good brunch/lunch option, as well as a handy stop-off point for one of Twelve Triangles signature offerings - their delicious filled doughnuts. Try the apple & ricotta one and you won’t be disappointed. Maybe pistachio & custard too, just to be sure." - fourcolourblack

Twelve Triangles is a small, take out/ take away bakery that's worth the short walk from the more touristy part of Edinburgh. We tried a plain croissant, a blackcurrant pistachio croissant (yum!!!), and a millionaire's shortbread. The croissants were excellent! I don't know much about millionaire's shortbread, but it was fresh and loaded with goey caramel. Everything in the display case looked good. Had time permitted, we would have stopped here again while visiting Edinburgh. Don't be intimidated if there's a line outside. It's inevitable due to the very limited space inside of the bakery. I didn't wait any longer than I would have at a typical bakery with more indoor space.

Tried the pistachio bramble croissant. Pastry was nice and flakey and well filled with bramble flavor. The pistachio flavor didn't really come through. Millionaire shortbread was delicious.

Crispy pain au chocolate. Always hard to find, because often they are so soft. Could have had a bit more chocolate if you ask me, but that’s my personal preference. The price is a bit on the high end. Not really a place to sit inside, it’s grab and go.

This place is fantastic. It has a cozy vibe. The women who work there are competent and caring. The pastries are top level, as is the coffee. The menu is small and features a good mix of sandwiches, vegetarian items, breakfast items, and pastries. Seasoning is perfect. It was so good that we went back a second day on our three day visit.

Really chill, lovely space that has a good selection of pastries and coffee. There is also a small selection of merchandise and things like coffee cups and chocolate bars. Really calm atmosphere. Fantastic pastries. Would love if they could make space for a couple of seats to have a drink inside.

Popped by recently on a Sunday morning while on a weekend break to Edinburgh! I liked being able to see the pastries in the window, in order to decide what you want before going into the tiny store! The staff were really warm and welcoming, and advised on the products they enjoy. I picked up the Hazelnut Pain au Chocolat and a Pain Suisse. Both pastries looked stunning. I decided to save the Pain Suisse for a later day, but ate the Pain au Chocolat shortly after purchasing. This was really tasty! The pastry itself had a nice amount of crunch and squish, though I would have liked a little more crunch. The hazelnut frangipane through the centre was super flavourful and there was just the right amount! The chocolate through the middle was of a good quality but slightly overpowered the hazelnut when consuming both simultaneously. Regardless, this was a very good pastry and I would purchase it again! I'd recommend twelve triangles based on this bake. However, I must note that my friend got the pistachio blackcurrant croissant, and could not taste any pistachio! Update - I heated the Cross Laminated Pain Suisse from frozen - this was absolutely incredible! The filling was a perfect balance of vanilla creme and chocolate chips (which cut the sweeteness perfectly). Even though I had frozen the product, it was still super buttery and I got a good crisp all the way around. One of the best pain suisse I have ever had - highly recommend!

I was in Edinburgh for the day and popped in to buy a loaf of bread to take home. A good range of proper sourdough loaves made without additives or shortcuts. Don't arrive too late in the day or it may be sold out.

Google
Arguably the nicest coffee/pastry spot in the area. However, I am slightly put off by the customer service. My “thank you” was once responded with a “yep”. I’m not sure if it’s shyness or just disinterest in engaging with customers at all, but it slightly puts me off going and makes for an awkward wait in the small standing area. The coffee is delicious enough to still justify it though.

Yelp
Much more of an elevated selection of baked goods than a regular café. Can definitely tell they're a bakery too. Everything I had left quite a nice impression with me. Sausage Roll: A very meaty sausage roll. Like it's mostly sausage, with a bit of dough around it. The sausage itself had veggies and herbs in the mix. Perfect if you want a big meal for breakfast. Cheese Scone: Subtle and mild cheesy. I didn't have any butter on hand, but imagine that would make this even better. Twice Baked Blackcurrant & Pistachio Croissant: Loved that there was a nice jam spread in the middle of the croissant. The twice-baking meant it wasn't as airy/flaky as once-baked croissant, but that is easily overlooked since the blackcurrant makes up for it. Frangipane Bar: A really great take on a dessert bar. Perfect if you love marzipan, but don't want to eat one of those weird brightly shaped candies. I liked this so much, I'm gonna look up how to make this at home.

Yelp
Seems like a popular place! Average of five people constantly queuing in this place (before and after me). Tried the apricot and coconut knot, and I like it.

Yelp
Is there anything better than a freshly made doughnut? Not to me - and so I knew that I had to pay Twelve Triangles a visit when I was in Edinburgh. The store is pretty small but they have a good range of stuff. I thought it was just doughnuts but they do pies, coffee, pastries and bread too. I got two raspberry jam doughnuts, a macaroni cheese pie and a potato and cheese pie. They take card provided it's over £5 and she nicely packaged everything up for me. The pies were delicious! I think they'd be even nicer warmed up but I didn't have time for that. I really enjoyed both of them and the macaroni pie showed me that these can actually be really nice (I once tried a Greggs one which was horrendous). The doughnuts were fresh and the jam was delicious. I'm not a fan of KK doughnuts as they taste so artificial, you can tell Twelve Triangles are the real dea. The staff member working was friendly, prices were reasonable and the food was amazing. What else could it be but 5 stars? I'll be back.

Yelp
Catching sight of Twelve Triangles was like meeting someone I'd heard a lot about for the first time. - In this instance, I'd heard sweet, sweet things about the delicious doughnuts from Lovecrumbs' sister business in Leith. I love stumbling upon businesses I've been meaning to track down; they make for the happiest of accidents. The smell is beautiful; of fresh bread. And it looks delicious. And then the doughnuts. They are a good size and bursting with cream. I order the peanut butter and cream cheese. The doughnut itself is delicious. They cream is more savoury than sweet and the combination of the cream cheese and peanut butter doesn't go as well together as I'd hoped. Although, that could just be down to my tastes as I definitely prefer a buttercream icing over one with cream cheese. Still, this is just my preference and I very much look forward to trying some of the other doughnuts. After just one visit, I feel the doughnuts definitely live up to the current buzz surrounding Twelve Triangles. - If I'm nearby it's going to be very hard to resist the lure of fresh doughnuts and coffee.

Yelp
I tried the ricotta and hazelnut stuffed pastries and they were OK. Good but not fantastic or worth the mile walk I made to get them.

Yelp
Twelve Triangles is owned by the cake-geniuses behind West Port's Lovecrumbs. Their bakery is just off Easter Road so it makes sense that their second café would be in this neck of the woods. Living locally I knew I had to pop by and try it out when it opened on Saturday. After following the opening day rush on Twitter, I waited til yesterday before heading along for Easter lunch goodies. There is currently no sign to indicate that this is the place, it still says it's an Asian jewellers, but you'll know Twelve Triangles by the hipsters sitting in the sun and drinking coffee outside. When I arrived there was (I assumed) a friend of the owners taking photos of the inside for (I assume) her instagram. Of course I then proceeded to take photos for Yelp so I can't talk really! Their doughnuts seem to be the big hit and they come in 3 flavours at present - coffee custard, chocolate hazelnut ganache and raspberry jam. I went for one each of the custard and chocolate. We didn't eat them til that evening and I can't decide if they were a bit chewy because they were a few hours old by the point or if they had been that way all along. The custard was good, the ganache was near solid. Tasty, but not the soft, yielding filling one expects of a doughnut. Having read that Twelve Triangles were setting out to be a savoury cousin to Lovecrumbs I had to try a slice of their focaccia. Topped with courgette, potato, pesto and riccota this was a salty slice of deliciousness. Had I not found fault with the doughnuts and (spoiler alert for the next paragraph) the price, this would be a 5 star review on the strength of the focaccia alone. Ah, but the price! Lovecrumbs is not cheap, and when they set up a pop-up shop at their bakery last year I found myself £15 lighter after buying two of three different slices of cake. Ouch (it might have been okay had sitting in been an option). And this is true of Twelve Triangles too. Two doughnuts, a slice of focaccia and a coffee set me back nearly £9. The worst part being that the takeaway coffee was TINY and drunk in one go and cost three bloody pounds. I'll not be making that mistake again. Yet I think Twelve Triangles is a four star affair rather than three (partly due to a lack of half stars and because as much as anything I'm feeling generous, it's a gorgeous, sunny bank holiday!). As I said, I loved the focaccia. The interior is cute. And the range of breads looks lovely. It's just too expensive to be a regular treat and I fear a little bit a case of style over substance.

Yelp
Pastry perfection. Huge variety of delectable options. Get there early to avoid disappointment. .

Yelp
Small, laidback bakery with a tiny number of seats. Hung around for a couple of coffees and both savoury and sweet baked products yesterday. Food was tasty, coffee was decent (as noted elsewhere the flask of hot water that tea drinkers get is handy). Good range of craft sodas too. You can't though stay too long chinwagging and drinking as there's no toilet, which is a shame as it made for a very pleasant couple of hours or so but then that could well be long enough for most folk.

Yelp
Cute little café just off Leith Walk, known for their wide range of delicious doughnuts. The super friendly lady explained all the options available: doughnuts, focaccia, pies, pastries. Today's focaccia was plum and gorgonzola. However I decided to try one of the pies which had a filling of lentils, feta and red onion. Also had a cappuccino (Steampunk coffee). The pastry on the pie was very good, but there wasn't enough filling and it was quite bland overall. I paid £5 for the pie and cappuccino which is a bit steep, but I'll be returning some time for the doughnuts.

Yelp
I almost don't want to write a review incase lots more people go and I can't get a seat. 12 Triangles is a tiny little bakery/coffee shop with awesome cakes and a really nice chilled atmosphere. There are 4 tables inside with a few more outside if the weather cooperates. It's not the most comfortable chairs but I suppose it's to encourage you to be quick. The cakes are awesome and made by the same people at Lovecrumbs. The donuts are really good and so was the chocolate hazelnut was delicious. They also sell lots of different types of bread. The coffee was ok but they have a great selection of teas and you get a flask of extra boiling water with them to make more than one cup. The pomegranate was very light and refreshing.

Yelp
A friend recently brought me some donuts from here. What a lovely, delicious surprise!!I I tried the 3 different filled donuts on offer. One with cream & peanut butter, the other chocolate & coffee and the other poppyseed and cream with an apple twist. All very delightful. The doughnut is a proper fresh airy, fluffy, golden fried donut. You can tell they are freshly made. They are delicious!!! I definitely recommend heading over and giving this new shop a try. If you love doughnuts you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Superb coffee and phenomenal baking puts this small cafe just off Leith Walk at the top of list for cool cafes. Little sister of Lovecrumbs, the cafe itself has a quirky, stylish design - there's not much space so it helps having seats outside in the summer. Melt in the mouth croissants, delicious breads, incredible filled doughnuts. Heaven.

Yelp
Good selection of pastries! The doughnuts were yummy. And if you like American hipster-style coffee, you'll like the coffee here.

Yelp
I love doughnuts. Period. And this place did not fail me. I have followed them on Instagram for a while, and no longer a Leith-er, it has taken me a while to make it down there. Obviously Leith would get more fab eateries after I go...anyhow, it is next to Odd Bins off Leith Walk, and has a blue painted outside (which the lovely girl who works there was painting after she made our coffees). The interior is nice and nothing fancy, there are a few fresh breads to buy from 2-3 pounds each and then a small counter with doughnuts, brownies, a savor roll and I saw a single, delicious remaining cinnamon roll. They also have coffee, serving Steampunk, they offer a standard coffee menu, some teas and cold drinks. They also offer iced lattes in small jam jars. We opted to try the caramel custard doughnut and the chocolate hazelnut custard one. Each was 2.80, and with two coffees our bill was under 10 quid. They only have 3 tables, 2 tables for 2 and one table which can fit 4, but I can't remember seeing enough chairs. The doughnuts were served on a plate with a knife, me being American meant I ignored the knife and went for it. The bread part of the doughnut was so delicious, light, fluffy, fresh and covered in sugar, absolutely heavily. The filling was equally as good, if no better, I expected it to be a bit sweet, but it was wonderful and not too rich. My only comment would have been that it had a bit too much filling, as it couldn't keep itself in the doughnut as I ate it, but it was so yummy, I was happy to have extra. Although, it did make for a messy eat. The chocolate hazelnut one was nice as well, but I preferred the caramel. They also had an apple and then a raspberry filling, but I imagine the filling change. I would definitely tell anyone to make the trip down to Leith to have a doughnut, as I left I thought how happy I am not to live around the corner anymore, because I would be there several times a week if not daily. It is a very nice treat and definitely would be a good stop for anyone with anything to do in Leith.

Yelp
There are few eateries I miss visiting more than Twelve Triangles. We lived across the street for a semester and would visit this place once a week. The challah (Fridays and Saturdays) is different than what I'm used to but super delicious nonetheless. The fluffy donuts are packed with really unique fillings that change every day. Really great coffee as well. Croissants are also very good, super crispy outside and flaky inside. There aren't many seats but it's just as fun to take it to go!
