On the Grid : Twenty One

"This one is for the comfort food lovers. If you are after a meal that just makes you feel good and with a warm heart don’t look any further, Twenty One is just your place! Feeding their loyal customers for breakfast, lunch and dinner since September 1958 and still run by the same family, the restaurant was the first to offer alfresco dining experience to Sydney and the first espresso coffee machine to the eastern suburbs. Our favourite dishes? Veal schnitzel with creamed spinach and the chicken noodle matzo ball soup." - CoMa

This restaurant has been here for 65+ years and I’m sure they haven’t changed the decor, or the food over this time and they don’t need to. Families have been coming here for decades and the food is good, maybe a little overpriced. We had a schnitzel and you get to choose 2 sides, I chose creamed spinach, which I really really didn’t like and mash with mushroom sauce which you have to pay extra for. We also got the cucumber salad which was fabulous and highly recommended. The service was friendly even if slow. I did enjoy it, but have been spoilt with better from other restaurants.

Good old fashioned comfort food, great staff and service and a nice rustic charm made last night’s dinner experience immensely enjoyable. I’ve been here before and it’s always a pleasurable dining experience.

21 Bistro, Double Bay – A Timeless Classic I’ve been coming to 21 Bistro since I was a baby—literally. I have memories of curling up and falling asleep on the banquette seats while my family enjoyed dinner around me. And of course, no meal was complete without a lollipop at the end—one of the highlights of being a kid here! Decades later, nothing has changed, and that’s exactly how it should be. The menu is still full of the same classics—rich, comforting soups, perfectly golden schnitzels, and all the dishes that have made this place an institution. It’s still family-run after all these years, and you can feel that warmth the moment you walk in. Having owned our own restaurant in NYC, we know a special place when we see one. 21 Bistro has that rare, old-school charm that’s nearly impossible to find these days. Now that we’re back in the area, this will be a regular spot for us again. Huge shoutout to Cathy, an absolute legend who keeps the magic alive. If you haven’t been, go immediately. If you have, well—you already know. (BTW… just one small thing - we would absolutely love candles on the tables and the lights to be a little dimmer. Or even just candles on the outside tables at night. That would be amazing!)

We walked in without a reservation to a full house. The staff and owners found us a table for 4, served us quickly, food came quickly. We ordered garlic bread, a meat platter for 3 ppl but eaten aggressively by 2, lamb cutlets, some great WA Pinot Noir at a very reasonable price and 2 kids desserts for 1 kid as the chocolate mousse and ice cream tasted so good. Above all we had a great chat with the owner and about hungary. Such a friendly, affordable, quick and tasty place to eat and being welcomed makes this an easy place to come back to. Bravo for places like this that are still run by people that care and great food. Thanks for having us 21 🙏
