Where to Drink Wine in the Monterey County AVA - AFAR

"Twisted Roots is named for the old-vine zinfandel that owner Julie Ruiz grew up with—and, of course, they make an excellent old-vine zin." - Aislyn Greene

Twisted Roots Winery was such a standout. We did a tasting and felt like royalty the whole time—great service, even better wine. They brought in charcuterie boards, and every wine came with a story that made it even more enjoyable (seriously, don’t miss the stories). The bubbly rosé is a must-try, and if you’re into wine clubs, check out their membership. This place knows how to make wine feel special without making it stuffy.

Google
This is one of the best wine tasting rooms in the valley. The Zinfandel and Petite Sirah were amazing. JK was a great host and gave us really informative backstories and descriptions about each wine. We really enjoyed our experience and are our looking forward to coming back. Twisted Roots was the highlight of our trip to Carmel! What a hidden gem!

Very nice people and jk is the best host ever. Will definitely come back. Also great wine.

Google
Twisted Roots is one of my favorite spots in Carmel Valley. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, making it the perfect place to enjoy a great glass of wine - even better if the sun in shining and you can enjoy their adorable patio. Josh and Julie, the owners, have created something special here, and it shows in both the experience and the wine itself. The staff, Jon Karlo and Aubrey, are not only knowledgeable but also genuinely warm and welcoming. Every pour is excellent, and the location only adds to the charm. Definitely a must-visit if you're in the area!

Google
We had a lovely time! The staff was so kind and attentive, and we got to enjoy lovely live music while we sat on the patio in perfect weather. We also had our toddler with us and our server JK even brought some fish food for our daughter to feed the fish. It’s one of my new favorite places to come, and I’ll definitely be bac!

Google
Twisted Roots tasting room in Carmel Valley Village is a must visit when in the area. The tasting room is charming and the staff are very attentive as well as knowledgeable. There are many varietals to choose from. My favorites were the Sparkling Rosé and the Tempranillo. Cheers!

Google
Walked into this amazing Gem Twisted Roots what a wonderful place to experience an array of delicious wines . The staff is fabulous and very attentive and knowledgeable. I feel lucky to have brought my husband with me as we enjoyed our stay in Carmel Valley. And even more fortunate to discover a new place that is both welcoming and has a great atmosphere and exquisite wines. Definitely making Twisted Roots our favorite place to visit.

Google
What a beautiful place for a winetasting! We chose a place in the outside sitting area which was perfect! The wine tasting for $15 was good (you can choose between 4 different wines in your tasting). Our most favorite ones were the Brut Rosé and the Albarino!

Yelp
JK was exceptional! Such an amazing person who explained the wines beautifully. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
We found this beautiful tasting room last weekend and popped in to do a flight with a few friends. Super kind and accommodating staff! The seating area inside was very comfortable. Made you want to stay all afternoon The manager was very knowledgeable about their wines and when I broadly asked for a white wine that wasn't too dry, he immediately knew the wine for me! Very nice Sauvignon Blanc with just a hint of tropical flavors, delish! Definitely will be recommending and coming back here as much as I can!

Yelp
The service was meh, not the friendliest people. We were looking for a place to do some wine tasting and popped into this place first as it was the first spot we saw after parking. To say we were turned off by the initial greeting is an understatement. Glad we opted for another tasting room near by where the service and wine was spectacular.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots in Carmel Valley! The tasting room is gorgeous, cozy and comfortable and there is a large outdoor patio as well. Josh and Julie are the perfect hosts as are the wonderful staff (Shannon and Amanda) who always make us feel welcomed. I always say Parsonage Wines are my favorite reds in the valley and I won't budge on that, but Twisted Roots wines are a very close second. Plus they offer a couple of whites and a rose. Their chardonnay is crisp and not oaky or buttery at all. My husband hates chardonnay and loved Twisted Roots version. Their Albarino is wonderful as well - a perfect sip for a hot (well ok - warm in this area) day on the deck. I'm not normally a sparkling fan but their Brut Rose (100% Pinot Noir) has loads of strawberry and bright berries. Very refreshing. The reds - I am a huge fan of their Zinfandel and I am so happy they did an unfiltered Zinfandel this year. It's fun to taste both versions side by side. Aside from the sediment present in the unfiltered version, I would have to say that version is my preference, but both are quite nice. Their Cabernet Sauvignon is not your typical heavy cab. It's fruit forward and somewhat light making it easy to drink with or without food. The Petite Syrah is their heaviest wine and just begs for some hearty BBQ to enjoy with. The wine clubs are affordable and ship only 3 times per year. With membership, you are offered free tastings and a generous discount. The wine club pick up parties are wonderful.....great food, live music and plenty of wine flowing in a lovely location. They even offer a military discount! I am a huge fan of this little winery (just 1,000 cases a year) and encourage you to visit and try some of the best Carmel Valley has to offer!

Yelp
This is a great spot for wine tasting! A friend and I needed to do a gift exchange and wanted to enjoy some wine in a cozy atmosphere. This place was perfect! Friendly and knowledgeable staff, yummy wines (especially the bubbly rose), and in a great location. Can't want to go back!

Yelp
Wonderful experience at this winery. They have a nice outdoor patio area with a relaxing atmosphere. For $15 you get to choose 4 wines from the list to try. It's a little different from many wineries that have a set list. What I like the best is that there was absolutely no pressure to buy anything. They didn't even mention the wine club or ask about buying bottles. I expect them to try to sell bottles at wineries, but I hate it when they push wine club memberships, so that was what stands out. The wines are pretty good and come from the Lodi area. They are good quality for the price of $30-$40 a bottle. My favorites were the petit Syrah and Zinfandel. If you are in the Carmel valley and are interested in wine tasting, this is an excellent choice! It's more relaxing and comfortable than the busy places in the Monterey bay. Checking in on Yelp gets you 10% off.

Yelp
Delightful patio setting with comfortable seating, while listening to low key live music (Phil Price) with the soft sounds of the water feature in the background. The wine flight was exceptional and the staff friendly and attentive. Highly recommend for an afternoon of great wines in a lovely setting. The indoor tasting room looked equally inviting. We plan to return

Daisie C.

Yelp
Amazing wines! I enjoyed all of their reds and especially their sparkling bruts. My favorite is their sparkling rose! Really good vibe and beautiful patio, plenty of indoor seating as well. Had the pleasure to meet the owner/winemaker Josh, and the associates Aubry and Shannon. Thank you for such an enjoyable experience, I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Good wine, modern interiors, great ambience and really friendly servers! Wine is from Lodi and fruit forward. Apple cider is bomb! Loved the cab and cherry road red.

Yelp
Great service & very kind and knowledgeable staff! Beautiful outdoor space and they have various singers performing on the weekends in the summertime! They mainly offer wine flights or full-bottles, rather than a glass of wine. They were very accommodating since we had a dog too!

Yelp
This venue is beautiful, the outside patio is lovely, and the wall fountains create a great mood. This wine label is not a local vineyard, its from the Lodi area, which was a bit of a surprise since I thought all the wines in Carmel Valley tasting rooms were from our area. I did like a couple of the pours, the Cabernet Sauvignon was not overly tannic, and quite balanced and smooth, and the old vine Zinfandel was also good. I was not a fan of the red blend (tasted oxidized), and the Chardonnay was quite tart and acidic, this style of Chardonnay does not match my preference of creamy and buttery, despite the push for less oak, I prefer the older style. The Service was friendly, just not sure I would return with so many other local wine options I enjoy much more.

Yelp
I won the wine tasting for here and this is the first time for me and everyone who came with me try their wines and oh my gosh we had so much fun and we love the wine the music and food!! I highly recommend this place to everyone

Yelp
This was our third stop on the wine trolley day. We were greeted immediately and found a wonderful spot to sit outside next the fountain that went the whole length of the patio. I was excited to try the bubblies! If I remember correctly, as it was a few weeks ago, and, we had been drinking wine already, lol, we had a choice of 4 tasters from the menu. I started with, well, shoot, I can't remember, lol. What I do remember is excellent service. The owner came out for our last tasting and gave us a little history lesson on his wine making and the label. Where the grapes are from, etc. It was very informative and interesting. If I had a second job that turned into a career, it would be winemaking. No! It would be a professional travel and food blogger. In all seriousness, this stop was outstanding. My friends tried the fancy cider and kept raving about it! Pretty pricey though at $20+. If you head out to this beautiful area of Carmel, I recommend stopping here. I will be back. Cheers and happy Yelping!

Yelp
We found this winery today and what a find. The wines were excellent and our server, Shannon, made us feel welcome. Highly recommend this winery and looking forward to visiting again. We sat out on the patio and Shannon turned the heater on, what a great way to spend a December afternoon.

Yelp
Third stop of our day spent in Carmel Valley. The staff was helpful and had our table ready for us. The wine pairing was different because we were able to pick four that appealed to us. I enjoyed this change up instead of a set menu as sometimes I stay away from Chardonnay. We were brought a complimentary tasting of the apple cider. I was not a fan but my significant other enjoyed this!

Laili M.

Yelp
Lovely setting, friendly service and good wine! Got to meet the owner and he was friendly. The outside patio is relaxing.

Yelp
My husband and I were so happy to have found this great tasting room tucked in the valley a couple weeks back. They accommodated our last minute walk-in and have a beautiful indoor/outdoor space with good seating options. We chose to sit on the patio and our tasting was brought to us. Every varietal we tried, we were impressed with and Twisted Roots has an awesome back story. We took a couple bottles home that we are still enjoying but we are looking forward to our next trip to Carmel Valley!

Kim M.

Yelp
in Carmel Valley? This is the place for a lovely wine tasting: gorgeous patio with fountains and plants, fire, citrus trees in bloom and water lilies. delicious wine and great server. Great olive oil store next door. Pretty little town.

Yelp
Such a great experience here! The wines are great and the atmosphere is amazing. Did a tasting and Shannon took great care of us! I can't say enough good things.
google avatar

Yelp
Their wine selection was nice. They are a small winery with vineyards in Lodi which we were local to so that was a fun surprise. The outdoor seating area is so peaceful and relaxing. And their apple cider was a nice surprise as well, definitely worth a try!

Yelp
This was our second visit -- and first tasting -- at Twisted Roots Winery. Our earlier visit was when the tasting room was still in a crowded art gallery. We were too early for a tasting that day so decided to come back another time. Wow. Glad we waited. The owners apparently purchased the spot and have given it a beautiful make-over. The black and white decor is simply stunning. Spanish flair to it. (Reminded me a bit of Artesa in Napa.) But this is definitely not Napa. Tasting fee was only $10 -- and waived with the purchase of one bottle. We gave an "okay" not "great" rating to three wines: the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, which tasted more like a pinot noir; 2015 Old Vine Zinfandel; and the 2017 limited release Grenanche Blanc. We had high hopes for the Old Vine Zin, but it just did not strike us as worth the $35. Our favorite was the 2015 Petite Sirah, at only $28 a bottle. Quite lovely and we happily purchased a bottle. Overall, I would give the venue 5 stars; the service 4 stars, and the wine 3 stars. That averages out to my 4 star rating. Although only one wine really stood out for me, I would urge you to give Twisted Roots a try.

Yelp
During my stay at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel & Spa On Del Monte Golf, I was invited to a 3-course dinner pairing each course with a different wine (plus I tasted 1 extra as a warm-up!) from this winery. I'm not a sommelier but I absolutely enjoyed the wines and they each complemented the menu course that was presented beautifully. The flavors were good and I loved being able to compare them to each other as well. I'd buy each one again. What really added flavor to my experience was having the winemakers there not only to share their family history My favorite wine was the "1918" Old Vine Zinfandel (which actually wasn't part of the tasting - but a special treat). You could taste the fruity and woodsy flavors and overall it was very smooth. My next visit to Carmel Valley I hope to visit the actual tasting room! I highly recommend dropping in!

Yelp
Very nice place to stop in. We had a little extra time and stopped in here and were very pleased with the wines. Small but very good selection. Ended up buying a bottle of the Petite Sirah.

Cassandra B.

Yelp
First stop, quite by accident as they opened a few minutes earlier than the winery we intended to go to. Wine was great, staff was great... highly recommend. Ended up back later that afternoon, joined the wine club. Great wine, great deal!

Yelp
Great wine, great people, and in a great location ! A perfect place to enjoy some delicious wine away from the crowds!

Yelp
Wine: A+ Renovated Tasting Room: A+ Owners (i.e. Josh & Julie Ruiz): A++ After coming to a Twisted Root tasting 4 years earlier, I remembered the wine and was eager to introduce it to our family and friends when we were in the area for our destination wedding. After my first phone call with Julie, I knew it was the right choice for our rehearsal dinner. She was personable from the get-go and great to work with! Julie was extremely accommodating during our remote coordination, figuring out drop-off and event timing, and even letting us swing by when we were in town for a quick tasting and a sigh of relief that the venue would be great for us. We ended up having 80 people at our rehearsal dinner, which was slightly too big for the entire space and larger than we expected (note it was pretty chilly outside, so people huddled in). Twisted Root was great about it though and worked really hard to not throw any stress onto my husband or me when the inevitable things went a little wrong (i.e. we couldn't find the napkins or coffee cups we brought). When grandparents were quick to turn to my husband and myself with problems, Julie was working to figuring things out. We are holding onto our wine membership for a while, and while I'm at it - a toast to Twisted Root!

Mike H.

Yelp
I have been a member of the Twisted Roots Wine club for several years. I thoroughly enjoy their wines, my favorite wine is 1918 OVZ. josh does a superb job balancing the wine from harvest to bottling. You won't find a more friendly Tasting Room staff than those at Twisted. Roots in Carmel Valley. They have a wonderful patio where you can sit out and just enjoy the sun and order food over if you wish or bring in your food if you wish. They take particularly good care of our military.

Yelp
Beautiful and modern tasting room with fabulous, complex wines. We enjoyed the tasting - $10. We brought home a bottle of Petite Syrah - our only bottle of the day but o my so that we can come back and get more soon. The server was bubbly and informative and all around lovely. Twisted riots was a great experience with bold reds and a lovely (but sweet) sparkling. We are so excited to return!

Yelp
The wines here are great. The owner/wine maker was on sight. Their hospitality is second to none!!!! We had a picnic on the patio. The patio is amazing!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Josh & Julie are amazing!!! The Family History & back story about their wine is captivating. They have recently finished an amazing remodel...... Their wine is to die for and the new chic & hip atmosphere is so welcoming ... hands down one of the best stops for wine in Carmel Valley!

Yelp
Amongst the best wines we sampled during our recent trip to Monterey. Facility is nicely laid out with a nice shaded patio out back. Staff are very friendly. We needed to change the shipping date for a delivery and the staff went out of their way to help, despite the shipping company claiming it was too late. Thanks for your hospitality and great wines! P.S. We couldn't resist but have officially nicknamed this winery "Twisted Sister". Yeah, probably been done before, but cool none the less.

Yelp
Very nice tasting room in Carmel Valley. It's Located in a block of about 5 other wineries. They have a lot of art in the shop and a great outdoor seating area with lots of water fountains. All their grapes are grown in Lodi. It's where they make the wine too. Apparently the owners live here so that's why you can taste here as well. We tried: Chardonnay Cabernet Sauvignon Petite Syrah Zinfandel It was all pretty good and bought a few bottles.

Yelp
On our first winery tour in Carmel Valley, we stopped off at Twisted Roots. A very eclectic array of décor and artwork strung throughout the building A charming outdoor area good for small groups, seating is limited Owner was very personable and informative, it made you feel more connected The highlight for me was the brut made from their chardonnay, not to dry not too sweet Overall Thoughts I would definitely come back to Twisted Roots!
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
Great little winery in Carmel Valley. They have a smaller tasting room than most, but don't let that fool you. Everyone in the winery was incredibly friendly and attentive. When we went they were finishing off a case of their amazing sparkling wine. I'm still kicking myself for not buying a bottle. If they have any left, I definitely suggest trying it.

L M.

Yelp
Gorgeous setting for wonderful wines. Loved taking a picnic and enjoying our flight on the back patio with friends. Twisted Roots produces high quality wines and we had an interesting conversation with the winemaker. Next time I go to Twisted Roots I plan to book the private room for a tasting.
google avatar

Maureen L.

Yelp
Every wine I tasted was excellent, including some nice full-bodied reds that were in the $25-$35 range per bottle, which was among the lower prices in the area. The tasting room was friendly and very cool. I took home a few bottles of the Petit Sirah, and they comped my tasting fee even though I came back a few hours later to buy!
google avatar

Janet S.

Yelp
We were intrigued to try Twisted Roots as they advertise that their grapes are from Lodi and we are big Lodi zin fans. Our server started us w/ a room-temp chardonnay. She said it tastes better that way, but I still prefer mine chilled. Ended up getting their 2010 Petite Sirah. Reasonably priced for the area.

Yelp
Fabulous customer service. Tom was a delight! He very much knew his stuff and we had such a blast wine tasting at twisted roots! He made our experience all the better! The wine was delicious! I particularly liked their Chardonnay! Twisted roots is a must while in the valley.

Yelp
This is a must stop! Wines are handcrafted, very limited production, so you can tell a great deal of care went into them. Love that the varietals are from a different region, so they grow grapes that the neighboring wineries cannot. Owner/winemaker is on site and will sit and have a glass with you! Patio is adorable and we brought lunch, which was welcomed. We will be back very soon!

Shanna G.

Yelp
I visited this adorable little tasting room this past weekend with a large group celebrating a bachelorette. I had been communicating with Whitney through email for a couple weeks to set up the reservation, they opened the winery early for a private tasting for our group. The wine is great, the staff so friendly, and the tasting room is decorated beautifully! Overall great experience here and the groups favorite from the whole day. If you are going to Carmel valley for wine make sure this winery is one of your stops!

Yelp
I have like this wine for quite some time . Small family winery . Great wines Josh is very hospitable Glad they are in carmel valley now. Well worth a try

Yelp
Went to this winery after a relative was craving a Zinfandel wine tasting. We went to Twisted Roots after seeing their advertisement on the street. The service was quick, but not too quick. We were able to enjoy our four rounds of wine over light conversation and not too much noise. The only real complaint I could have is the restaurant next door was doing dishes we think and was making a lot of noise! We had four rounds of their wine, including: Chardonnay, Cabernet, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. The wine tasting was free and the Zinfandel was great! Highly recommend it! Make sure to check out the art gallery and enjoy the fountain by the outdoor tables!
google avatar

Robert R.

Yelp
We had six tastings and all were reasonably good. The service was fantastic and we ended up with a bottle of their Ross' cherry road red. Overall great experience.

D R.

Yelp
Great wines, we bought one of each that we tasted - something we rarely do! And all 4 for $100, not bad at all. Met the very friendly couple that runs the place and makes the wines, and we enjoyed hearing his story about learning to make wine. It was also great to find a place in Carmel Valley that specializes in something other than pinot noir, which isn't our thing. And, like so many places in Carmel they're dog friendly as well. This will be a stop each time we're in the area.

Yelp
If you haven't been to Twisted Roots, please, just go! My fiancée and I went wine tasting in Carmel Valley for the first time because I had purchased a handful of Groupons for various wine tasting rooms on Carmel Valley Road. The Groupon for Twisted Roots included wine tasting for 2 AND a bottle of Cabernet for under $20 (a steal!). Prior to Twisted Roots we went to another tasting room down the road and our experience there was not fabulous. Immediately walking into Twisted Roots we were greeted with a smile by Josh, the owner. He offered to serve us outside on the patio and since the weather was nice we decided to take him up on the offer. He poured each wine and gave us ample time to drink and enjoy it before coming out with the next. After tasting the wines in our flight he came out and offered two other varieties from his limited edition tasting flight at no additional charge. Sure enough I loved the Cherry Red Road from his limited line and so we bought one of those to put away for a special occasion in the future. Josh had much passion for making his wine and my fiancée and I both really appreciated that and coupled with his great customer service it was a definite "we must go back" kind of place!

Todd W.

Yelp
We love this place so much. The wine maker Josh is always super friendly and treats everyone like family. The military discount is just the icing on the cake for my wife and me. Their wine club events are always great and the passion shows in the wine. We brought a huge group of friends here and Elliot was super accommodating. If you're tired of the shitty Monterey weather this is a great place to sit outside and relax.

Yelp
We had the most pleasurable experience wine tasting at Twisted Roots in Carmel Valley yesterday. The wine was excellent and enhanced by the knowledge and personal connection provided by Tom, our host. We highly recommend this winery to anyone visiting this beautiful area of California. A big thanks for the wonderful memories.
