On the Grid : Type High Letterpress

"You can’t confine Type High Letterpress to one category. While, yes, it is a letterpress workshop, it’s also a gallery, a gift shop, a museum, a classroom and library of steel type, wood type, woodcut art and vintage plates. Come here and take advantage of what already exists, or bring custom designs for owner Tony Zanni to translate to plates. Looking for art to deck your walls? There is no shortage of interesting prints among the greeting cards, stationary, t-shirts and coasters. Want to take up letterpress as a hobby? Get in on one of Tony’s classes to learn the basics. Located in the Hungerford Building, Type High Letterpress is certainly a designer’s joint." - Truth Collective

I contacted Type High Letterpress a few years ago about creating a poster for a full reading (6+ hours) of Dante's Inferno. Tony Zanni designed a stunning poster that was both playful and alluring. People in our community have held onto the poster as an artistic keepsake. Then, a year later, I asked Tony if he could do something similar for Dante's Purgatorio. Once again, he delivered beautifully, with a new color scheme and a design that captured the text beautifully. Another year passed, and it was time to complete the triptych. This time, Tony designed the poster for the complete reading of Dante's Paradiso. Who's to say, but it may be his masterpiece! It's a gorgeous piece of work that, impossibly, visualizes an impossible poem. People all around Old Lyme, CT now have Tony's work framed and hanging on their walls. Consider this, Google readers: Letterpress art is one of the coolest expressions of creativity (and publicity) that we have, and Tony Zanni is a master of the form. Type High Letterpress is a jewel in the world of design and publicity. It is a business worth seeking out, and supporting. Dante enthusiasts in Old Lyme couldn't be more fortunate to have found Tony, and Type High!

Tony is the best around! I asked him to do a project for me and he crushed it. As you can see from the photos, he does incredible work. He already had a poster for his favorite breweries in the city of Rochester. As a wine enthusiast, I wanted a poster that focused on my favorite wineries in the Finger Lakes. Tony was happy to oblige. He created this absolute masterpiece and was able to give me extra copies to gift to friends and family. Tony also has some amazing prints for sale and I have grabbed a number of them for house decor. Tony is the man and I am so glad to not only work with him on this project but other projects in the future!

Cannot recommend this place enough! Tony is an absolute gem to work with. Met him at an arts festival in Canandaigua and had to check out his shop. Now he’s my go-to resource for custom pieces and projects. Check this place out in Rochester — you won't regret it!

Tony created the invitations for my wedding. My uncle built the initial designs, then worked directly with Tony to bring the design to life. Tony was very responsive, asked detailed questions, and made us both feel confident the invitations would be spectacular. And they were. I highly recommend Tony and Type High Letterpress.

Tony is THE MAN!!!! This guy hit a homerun into space with the work I requested. If he isn't able to do it.... he knows people who can help. I asked for something on very short notice and he just handled it like a pro!!! 5 stars just aren't enough for this local print shop.

Did a team workshop here this afternoon and it was an absolute blast. Tony did a great job instructing and supporting everyone so that team members of all skill levels could participate. 10/10 would recommend!

Tony Zanni did a FABULOUS job on my son's & future daughter in law's "save the date" announcements, invitations & RSVPs! The card stock, fonts & engraving are just terrific. The detail is incredible & he totally customized every piece of the invitation package to reflect their personalities. If you're looking for a unique approach - for any printed material needs-not just invites, definitely check him out! I heartily recommend him!
