How to Spend a Perfect Day in the West Village, From Morning to Midnight | Condé Nast Traveler

"I appreciate Ty’s Bar on Christopher Street for its relaxed, almost divey atmosphere and longtime neighborhood presence (around since 1972) that draws a convivial, slightly older crowd." - Matt Ortile

Google
Just, lovely. I went here for my 2nd time ever yesterday (which is wild, considering I’ve been living in New York City for 15 years), and it just has all the vibes, all the feels of an old school gay bar. These places should be cherished, as there aren’t a lot of them, it seems. Classic gay bars that have been around for a while, that draws all gays of all ages, which is important to me because I enjoy talking to them all! Lol. The decor here always gives me vintage vibes. Cool, dim lights, and always a friendly bartender with UNBEATABLE drink prices. It truly is a community and again, it should be cherished.

Google
No food is available, but you can bring your own. The prices are reasonable, and the bartender is friendly. The patrons are all great. It's a fantastic bar, Mark!

Google
Friendly Bartender and Customers For some this is the place to go sometime better than being with the Family or alone.Great place

Google
Great little bar! Stopped here on Saturday when they opened at 2, husband and I had a great time! Bartender was super friendly and hospitable, made it feel very welcoming! Will be coming back here when back in NYC.

Google
An LGBT icon. No glitz (well except for the ceiling). It’s been more than 30 years since I stopped in the last time for drinks with my chorus buddies (the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus). Nothing has changed, not even the soundtrack or the sound equipment. There are spirits all around. Remembering our friends who didn’t have the chance to grow old. Thank you Ty’s for keeping their memories alive!

Carl B.

Google
My husband and I come here every year for Christmas. The bartenders are friendly, they play good music, and the drinks are great. And it’s in the center of the village. It’s a great location.

Google
Been a long time Ty’s customer. The very nice and handsome Fou was manning bar tonight. He was amazing and always made sure I was taken care of.

Juan Q.

Google
On Saturdays, the Mexican bartender spins Latin tracks while a mostly American crowd watches young Latinos twerk with admiration—and more than a little salivating. It’s a night of music, movement, and mingling.😜

Yelp
Old school cruisy gay bar where guys aren't glued to their phones but are friendly and aren't afraid to say hello! Good stuff drinks and fun music videos make this small space the perfect hangout for guys who want to make connections ;)

Yelp
Opened in 1972, Ty's isn't as old as Julius' nearby (review: https://yelp.to/KjKqALij-A). It's about six years younger, but it felt more centrally located on Christopher Street. Coincidentally Jamie W. and I came by right after a visit to Julius', and both bars share the same casual neighborhood hangout vibe. Ty's felt smaller, but that was mostly because there was no pool table here. Unless you plan to nurse a few at the bar, I think this was more a place to drop by for one and then move onto the next place. Or maybe that was just us. Drinks were dirt cheap, $6 each for a Tequila Sunrise and a Gin & Tonic, and they came in beer mugs (photo: https://yelp.to/FHkY4uqcY1). They were pretty stiff from what I recall. We knew if we had another, we'd be under the floorboards. DRINKS - 4 stars...big and stiff AMBIANCE - 4 stars...about as casual as you'd expect SERVICE - 3.5 stars...the glass mugs were a nice touch TOTAL - 4 stars...not the oldest gay bar in town but definitely among the friendliest RELATED - Looking for gay bars...around the world? Here's my collection of places I've patronized and reviewed: https://bit.ly/3LJO7fd

Yelp
MANHATTAN/West Village: Ty's Bar is one of New York's 1st gay bars and they have the most friendly staff and customers we've come by anywhere! Reasonably priced drinks, TVs to watch the game, and great overhead lighting make it a magical spot to hang out with your dog. Leashed and friendly dogs are allowed inside and there is a huge tub of dog treats. Brie made a lot of friends with her cuteness! It's a small place, but a lot of fun!

Yelp
Always a fun time as usual. Weekends are packed and music is pumping. Definitely a must see if in the village.
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
We very randomly stopped in this bar - on our way to somewhere else - and it was the best detour we've ever taken in our lives. This is the kind of place where all the frosty, uppity nonsense you find on other gay bars is left at the door. Super small, but filled with friendly, fun people, great music, and nice bartenders.

Alex S.

Yelp
Patrons are very judgmental and do not make others feels welcome. I've tried several times and have had conversations with several individuals where I felt unwelcome. Bar itself is like any NYC dive/gay bar and had cheap drinks with good service. Vibes are off tho.
google avatar

Andrew M.

Yelp
Ty's is one of those great gay bars that feels like home even if you are visiting from thousands of miles away. It has a great neighborhood feel, but welcomes visitors. The vibe reminds me of Kings Arms in London, StreetBar in Palm Springs, CA, or Pilsner Inn in San Francisco.
google avatar

Glenda D.

Yelp
I love going to Ty's. So many interesting men. Will be back pretty soon! It's the nicest crowd, and I've never had a negative experience here. The bartenders are great, the drinks hardy.
google avatar

Sulay N.

Yelp
I like my Sunday "tea" and usually start with 'tinis at another place and leave Tys as my last pitstop for cheaper drinks (which yes, are stronger than others) before heading home. AND I have liked all the staff over the years who have made it sort of a "gay Cheers" - Gary, Ron, Daniel, Julian all rock. But man, that FOX guy on Sundays sure doesn't make you feel welcomed at all. I do not know what his problem is - if it's supposed to be a "cute act" to appear muy macho or sarcastic, well it sure doesn't work to be so snarky to customers. I am always pleasant to bartenders and tip them well, but this guy seems to have stick up his bum OR is insecure OR is always in a bad mood. EVEN when paying him a compliment, you get a rude stare followed by a snappy "what are you having". Stop acting like a dick man and TRY to engage in friendly chit chat if Ty's wants more than these 3 stars.

Yelp
I really like this bar . Bartenders are friendly and seem like they have a fun time. Drinks are wonderful and at a good value ( Three drinks for 22 dollars is like a steal in this economy ). I also appreciate that they are open during holidays as it gives me a safe space and a community to go to. Music in this more is catered towards 80s/90s music which is personally my thing. They give you drinks in this awesome mug. I just wish I could buy one and bring it home. Community is on the mature/bear side of things. everyone here knows each other and I have had conversations with alot of awesome people. No problem making new friends here. My only gripe is the bar is too small as it can get crowded inside. Besides that, I think this will be a bar I will regular attend to when I am ever in the city. Would recommend.

Gary D.

Yelp
I love it here. A wonderful fun place of friendly smiles and warm embraces. My fave go-to place to make new friends...Can't wait to go back! Glenda

Yelp
Ad this is not. What this is is my own personal experience of feeling connected to the history of ‍‍+ and being slightly intoxicated at the same time and it was marvelous. It felt like I was in a movie from the 80s (when VHS was the thing) and it was cool. I just regret not wearing skin tight denim but that's just an aesthetic thing. Service was great so please remember to T.Y.S. (Top...I mean, tip your server ).
google avatar

Jamie P.

Yelp
Small bar but fun. Drinks are strong and prices reasonable. You don't feel out of place if you are over 50 here and the crowd is friendly. One of the few bars still around that has a most gay male clientelle
google avatar

Scott K.

Yelp
The bartender thinks that he can fool me. Giving me 2 drinks with no spirit in it. I can understand that you do not authorize me drinking anymore But, at least have the balls to tell me. Which I would have accepted. But, you think you can get away with it. Charging me for FULL cocktails that are not complete SCOTT KITAJIMA

Yelp
We popped in to kill some time before a table was ready for us at a place across the street. So...I didn't know this was a gay bar. And that's honestly my own fault. My friends saw the pride flag out front but I figured it was NYC and they were making a point to say they were LGBT-friendly. Although the bouncer clued us in as we came in. Pro: I never had to wait the bathroom! The music here is upbeat, the service is fast and the drinks are cheap--my amaretto sour was *reliably* good. The vibe is low key. We had a great time vibing to the music which is loud enough to put you in a good mood but not loud enough that you can't still have a conversation. They played a lot of reggaeton the night that we were there which was nice to hear something a little different than American top 40 like every other bar in the city. They serve cocktails in beer mugs, so you definitely get your money's worth! This bar is friendly for all folk, judging from the warm reception we got.
google avatar

Mendoza P.

Yelp
Great to see them open again....the gay village lives on. The Hanger is also open. Delicious martinis.
google avatar

Jl J.

Yelp
I have been coming to this bar since 2008 and it keeps getting better. They made me feel welcome and part of the gang from day one. I highly recommend this astounding Bar and Staff!
google avatar

Jesus S.

Yelp
Like most places in the village this spot offers strong drinks for people and an older crowd of audience. This is way more of a dive bar chill back and talk and catch up kind of place. So know that you're getting yourself into that before coming in. Other than that, cool bartender and friendly. Two drink minimum if you are paying with a card.
google avatar

Yelp
Ty's is the smallest gay bar in NYC so it always seems crowded. It's full of laid back, beer-swilling bears and otters. Cocktails come in beer mugs so you get the most from your dollars. Ty's hasn't been remodeled in ages so this is not a modern trendy gay bar, and reminds me of a truck stop with a dose of sleaze (which is a plus LOL). Maybe that's why I've never seen straight girls here. If that sounds good, come by and you'll be literally squeezed in bear cave heaven.
google avatar

Kwame S.

Yelp
Word on the street is that Ty's is the tiniest gay bar in the city. Although Ty's is small, it definitely has a large personality. This is a easy laid back kind of bar where one can grab a few beers and/or drink and chill. The patrons reside on all parts of the LGBT spectrum in terms of race, body type, and age. I will say that most of the crowd were in the 25+ age group. The bar staff was very attentive and friendly - no attitude. I did not have to set myself on fire to get noticed by the bartender because he was admiring his biceps. On my visit (an early Sunday evening), the bar was showing music videos of various artists from the late 80's and early 90's. *Random question: What ever happened to the R&B girl group, Jade?* Ty's is the perfect place to grab a few drinks to get your night started.
google avatar

Kyree D.

Yelp
Bad service. Wsit time while. I sat at the bar was not siffeiconet given how light the crowd was that evening. He then conversed in am easy man.er at the other end with folks.heiked or new. NYC bartenders have this idea we OWE them a tip, but want to label blacks as bad tippers when u don't promptly serve us as quickly as your other patrons. Long as you're white tho, you will be fine

Elle E.

Yelp
super friendly ,safe, convenient ,good drinks and the best bar staff like Daniel to make your day happier
google avatar

Daniel W.

Yelp
Awesome neighborhood gay bar. Friendly and welcoming with reasonably priced drinks and great music.
google avatar

Delaney L.

Yelp
This place is always busy every time I walk by. We went on a Sunday night for a quick drink and the crowd was lively and great staff
google avatar

Bill T.

Yelp
Historic bar on Christopher Street...and not just because most of the guys who come here look like they fought in the Civil War! I kid, I kid. This is a pretty nice place. Drinks are reasonable. It's pretty small but there are tables and seats so you have a place to put your beer when you're standing around. On the Saturday I was there, the crowd skewed older, bear-ier and leather-ier, but that wasn't the entire clientele. I saw a guy wearing a sportscoat and I had on a sweater (cashmere, naturally) so there's that. They had some interesting videos on the giant TVs. One was showing a basketball game and one was showing a video for some rugby team that was making a calendar. Bartenders were very nice. This is a nice, laid back place to have a drink.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
A large group of us, maybe 20, showed up on a Wednesday night after work and had such a great time we stayed for almost 7 hours! The bartender, although solo, was cool as a cucumber the whole time and even brought out bowls of snacks for our tables. I LOVE this place!
google avatar

Morissa P.

Yelp
Fun local boy's (man's) bar I go to with my male friends. I don't care for lesbian bars and my wife knows I'm safe here (she's safe) here.
google avatar

Jonathan R.

Yelp
This place is garbage. Last night they wouldn't let my friend grab his coat before leaving. Will never come to this trash bar again.
google avatar

Tony R.

Yelp
I love this place. The owner cares about the customer. The drink prices are really low especially for NYC. The bartenders are very friendly. My only negative is not all of the bartenders have the best taste in music. Lol
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Best low-key spot in the city. Gary is awesome. Best ever. Attentive, fair, and adorable to boot. Will be back again and again, as I have for years.
google avatar

Eric P.

Yelp
I'm still processing how I felt about this place. It wasn't full of leather (though it had a fair amount), it wasn't an older crowd (though it had a fair amount), had a decent selection of bottled beer, and was generally pretty clean. The thing is, lately I've been becoming more and more attracted to guys with beards: there were a lot of those here, even some younger guys. Cruising aside, I can see myself becoming a regular here. Even if people start second-guessing the blonde creature in the corner drinking a Guiness. If not, just to finish the Tom of Finland documentary that was showing on the screens the other night.
google avatar

Bill O.

Yelp
Great West Village classic still going strong after all these years. This is now the unofficial bear-oriented bar in town. They don't have a bear night per se but if you want to meet these sorts of fellas go there. Take it from a 20 yr Manhattan gay bar veteran. Oh, and one more thing it is small and it can get packed. if you don't like crowds go on a week night like a Thursday. On some Tuesdays they have a fireman's thing. And say hello to Gary -- the friendliest and happiest bar tender out there! (Tuesdays to Fridays). Don't hide on the internet. Go out and meet people in real time. It's what New York is all about!
google avatar

Christopher C.

Yelp
I go to bars like this on the nights when there's about 6 people total. So, that's a preface to this review and also what I like to do in bars. Small, but cozy place to get to know someone and have a good drink. Long Island Iced Tea I had was hand-crafted, meaning it was good and strong. Yum. Decorations for the holidays were rustic and actually just pretty, not impeding on the mood. Two flat screen TVs were playing football, but I've also heard other stuff is played on them when there's no game. (Other stuff being, perhaps, inappropriate for young yelpers). I'd recommend this place and I'm happy I went. It was recommended to me by a friend. Apparently, my beard is welcome there, so I suppose the rest of me should be able to get a drink while i'm at it!

John R.

Yelp
This place is still cliquey, still early pandemic recovery days so little sexual undertone. Great bartender still there
google avatar

Marna H.

Yelp
Been here a few more times since my initial review. Everytime Gary and Julian are wonderful to me. The guys who come here are always friendly and outgoing and great share a laugh or two with. Beware of some young girls who have never been into a gay bar and think they own the joint. Just ignore them though. They don't know any better; they just weren't raised right.
google avatar

Gourmet G.

Yelp
Another Village institution, this gay bar attracts an eclectic crowd with its weekly leather/uniform night and dirt-cheap beer blasts. Daddy bears, youngish cubs, and those who like to hunt them can be found here on a regular basis. Most patrons are looking for Mr. Right, or at least Mr. Tonight. If nothing inside catches your eye, you can always station yourself near the picture windows, strike a pose, and cruise the world as it strolls by.
google avatar

Ricky E.

Yelp
If bartender knows you, you get a great drink- if not you don't get your money's worth. Barely received a shot in cocktails. Bar is fun-- bartender hm....disappointing Bought shots and they were good Ordered another cocktail-- why bother--- Drink beer
google avatar

Shane H.

Yelp
WAY different than my usual haunts but it was fun wandering in with a friend tonight. Ty's has a monthly gathering of the gay firefighters and they were there this evening - some nice eye candy amongst them. Definitely a crowd that "comes here often" but not my scene. Still I like the fact there are W. Village homos holding down the fort and planting the rainbow flag amidst our former environs... It's good to see my peeps holding their own in my neighborhood.
google avatar

Emann B.

Yelp
If you're gay and live in Chicago, and consider yourself more Big Chicks/Scot's than Hydrate/Spin, you'll feel quite comfortable at Ty's. It's smallish, but the drinks are strong and the folks working there are very friendly. My best mate lost his wallet there, and they had it waiting for him when we went back the next day. Phew! Affable crowd that skews north of 40.
google avatar

Charles A.

Yelp
Ty's is a humble neighbourhood bar with friendly bartenders and custom! The music is never too loud, the beer's always cold and it's just dodgy enough to keep the straight females from invading (as they have every other gay bar!) Ty's is one of the few gay bars left in New York City I feel comfortable in and with their specials nearly every night, you won't leave with an empty wallet!! Also notable: Ty's is one of the few bars that supports gay organisations such as the BALL BREAKERS (softball club) and EMPIRE CITY MC (the oldest motorbiker club in the USA)!
google avatar

AJ E.

Yelp
A fantastic bet for folks just passing through, even shy folks will be charmed by the most excellent and most fantastic Gary, one of the best bartenders I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with. Drinks are well-priced and come as fast as you want them, although the intimate bathroom causes a lot of harumphing when trying to exit. I usually don't save up bars in my memories when I come back home, but I brought back good vibes from Ty's to Seattle.
google avatar

Robert C. Y.

Yelp
One of the good ole standbys. Always friendly barkeeps and reasonable prices And not a "pretty boy" bar, but just ordinary people out to chug a few brews or cocktails. An old village hangout for decades.
google avatar

Jarrett N.

Yelp
Ty's is a low-key, low-maintenance, low-attitude bar with men that are handsome but not so pretty that you can't talk to them. The clientele consists of men that are usually 30+ with average builds of the bearish variety. This is a good place to either start your evening, end your day, meet with friends, and good for tourists. Random conversations can be started somewhat easily with the man/men next to you. By comparison, the drinks are cheap and the atmosphere can border on cruisy.
google avatar

Austin M.

Yelp
Ty's is a fun bar to visit once in awhile. As an early 30 something, visiting Ty's makes me feel like a delicious piece of baby back ribs about to be gummed to death in a Miami Retirement Center, so it is quite flattering. I do like the sense of generic warmth and low-grade sleaziness so I keep going back once in awhile. But for me, Ty's is really awesome on a Friday night because it doesn't charge cover, isn't mobbed by lesbians*, Bridge and Tunnelers, and NYU Students**, and has super cheap drinks. Also the bartenders are complete sweet hearts. On the down side, the place isn't that clean, it's just a single room with not that much to look at, and it can feel a bit cruisy. Just come well armed with either a look that says, don't you dare talk to me, or a pleasant but forceful personality that says, okay I'll talk to you but don't grab my ass. * Nasty lesbians, we hates it preciousss! ** there.are.not.words.for.these.people

Yelp
Five years ago my husband and I have had to begin traveling to NYC twice a year for a week each trip. Since my husband, Rick, is traveling part of the week for business and the remainder of the week for leisure, I have a few days and evenings that I can wander the city alone. Five years ago I wandered into Ty 's for an early mid afternoon cocktail (or two or three) and was greeted by Ron who immediately made me feel at home. I've been returning to Ty's most every day of every one of our NYC visits since. Rick and I both really enjoy it here. Friendly patrons and super sweet bartenders make Ty's my home away from home and is often the starting and ending point for our cocktail time. All of the other bartenders have also been as fantastic and welcoming as Ron. Hubby thinks that Ron should apologize to every staff member for allowing my mouth to enter the bar that first time! Cheers and thanks again to Ty's entire staff -- Ron, Gary, Anthony, Julian, Allen and Jeremiah. XOXO Brian and Rick from North Carolina Make merriment. Dine. Enjoy! - Brian
google avatar

Kevin T.

Yelp
No matter what time of the day or what day of the week you go to Ty's, it always feels welcoming and relaxed. Zero attitude from both staff and patrons alike, along with the great beer/drink prices, make it my favorite NYC bar without question.
google avatar

Sean G.

Yelp
This has a very low-key neighborhood feel to it - there always appears to be friendly folks around and the bartenders seem nice enough. They do have flat screen TVs above the bar that proved to be a little distracting - the last time I was there, one screen had perfectly tanned men with six pack abs rubbing themselves silly on beaches, in showers and by pool side - the other screen had an episode of Supernanny on, which featured a single mom being abused by her children. I couldn't figure out which was more depressing to watch...
google avatar

Paul D.

Yelp
Fun local bar, great people, always have a good time here, no pretense
google avatar

Robert A.

Yelp
Perhaps the most expensive two Stellas I've ever bought but the bartenders were cute-ish and friendly. Went in because Hanger's across the street was TOO crowded and I wanted to sit and drink. That was accomplished. Fun 80's mix of music the night I was there and some good eye-contact flirting from the only other person there worthy sleeping with. (I went home with my gal pal.)
