Incredible restaurant in the very heart of Prague! The food was absolutely amazing and incredibly delicious! The service was just remarkable and the atmosphere was greatest gem in this crown! There was a pianist who made the overall experience unforgettable! I can highly recommend this place to everyone who wants to try the best and authentic taste of duck prepared in the heart of Prague!!!

Visiting U Modré Kachničky is an experience you simply shouldn’t miss when you're in Prague. It’s a treat for the soul, the palate, and the mood – you just leave feeling happy after an evening in their company. We were a group of 10 old university friends wrapping up an amazing 4-day trip to Prague, and wow – we definitely got our money's worth. The waiter was exceptionally professional, incredibly skilled at reading the atmosphere, and great at recommending both wines and dishes. He had a knack for stepping in just when needed, without ever being intrusive. The food was truly outstanding – we had duck, lamb, and roe deer, all perfectly prepared. The duck, for which they’re especially famous, absolutely lived up to the hype. It’s highly recommended to book a table in advance, as it can be fully booked up to a month ahead. The interior is cozy and wonderfully authentic. By the way, the restaurant is located in the “embassy” district and keeps a low profile – no flashy signs, and not much traffic in that part of town. Just follow Google Maps, and you’ll be guided straight there. Highly recommended in every way!

Just wow this has to be the best place I ate at in Prague! I pre-booked this so we could dine as soon as we landed, just in case it was fully booked. Walking in, I was immediately struck by the absolutely stunning decor gorgeous furniture, beautifully painted walls, and plenty of mirrors reflecting the elegance of the space. When we sat down, our server was incredibly polite and had some great recommendations, especially when it came to wine and spirits. The menu features plenty of rabbit and duck dishes, offering refined Czech cuisine with a touch of finesse. I started with the foie gras and pear chutney, while my friend had duck with pomegranate. For the main course, she ordered the saddle of deer, which was not only delicious but also came with an impressive tableside preparation—they flambéed it right in front of us, making for a fantastic spectacle. I had the rabbit with pea purée, which was delicate and flavourful. The food was so rich and tasty that I wanted to eat more, but the portions were just right. I hadn’t tried foie gras before, but given the exchange rate, I figured it was the perfect time to try something new, especially since the same dish would have cost at least quadrupe in the UK! In the end, our meal came to about £35 each, which was amazing value for the quality, presentation, and service. Every dish was beautifully executed, the flavors were rich and well-balanced, and the overall experience was unforgettable. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone visiting Prague!

Google
Excellent restaurant with a unique menu. I got grilled duck (pictured) along with some wine from their extensive list. Very nice interior Decore in a very old building give this restaurant a vibe that is hard to recreated anywhere. We showed up early for our reservation and were one of the first people to sit down. I would still recommend making a reservation to make sure you get seated.

We had the most incredible dinner here during our recent trip to Prague. There was not one bite or sip that we didn't thoroughly enjoy. We had the tasting menu with the wine accompaniment. We were thrilled to learn that all of the wines would be Czech. I won't describe every dish or wine, but the standouts for us were the fois gras and the grilled deer saddle. I have never had venison that was so tender. In terms of the wines, we really liked them all but were really impressed with the white wine and the icewine from 2009. And the service was just wonderful - we had the best time with our waiter. The place itself is tucked along a quiet street and it could not be cozier. We would have returned during our trip if we did not have other reservations already booked. We are definitely looking forward to returning during our next visit to Prague. This restaurant alone is worth a return trip!

It was just an incredible dining experience we had last night at this very unique and charming restaurant. The layout is as unique as it comes, as it is located in an older home, spread over several floors. The piano player Eduard made the atmosphere magical, as he played many classics. Our server Jarka was the nicest and most professional server we've had on our bride trip through Czechia. She was always smiling, very polite, and had great recommendations. We loved our appetizers, especially the game pate and the deer, both perfectly prepared. I really enjoyed the rabbit, and my wife lover the duck leg with cabbage. Delicious wines, amazing atmosphere, and outstanding customer service!

Google
The place is incredible, a haute cuisine place, not for everyone, foie, duck, rabbit, pheasant, top-notch food!. We tried the Czech wine and it was incredible to accompany the food, it surprised us.

Yelp
Truly special - this is the place for a date or special dinner out - not particularly suited for a gregarious group - as the setting is quite peaceful and romantic. Service was fantastic and the food was equally impressive. We had an appetizer that was a trio sampler and was a great intro. We enjoyed a duck and deer dish and both were tasty and very generous portions. Just one caution - though they had many spirits and liqueurs to offer, they are not really set up for mixed drinks. Have your booze straight up or go for the wine. Totally a treat and very very affordable especially compared to the US dollar - well worth the visit.

Yelp
We came and got seated in a quiet dark upstairs area with one other very big loud table. I wasn't super stoked on the table but it got a bit more lively as the night went on. We got the tasting menu and honestly I didn't love the food. The duck was the only thing I really enjoyed. It wasn't super expensive but American standards but not cheap either. The service was good.

Yelp
Best hidden gem in Prague, Czech Republic.. I ordered Roasted Duck with Apple Raisin Stuffing. Outstanding! The roasted duck melts in your mouth! The chef perfectly balanced a touch of sweet with a touch of salty for this dish, a real palatal experience..,, like 'Christmas in your mouth' good! !A must try! Obviously there is some French influence in this dish. Chef hit all the notes on this one. It's a cozy little romantic restaurant off the beaten path, so to speak. Found this place via Trip Advisor which reveals great reviews. Overall, great food, great service, and nice ambience. Check out this place for yourself. It doesn't look pretty on the outside but charming on the inside. You can thank me later!

Yelp
Oh my! What a restaurant! The food was amazing. From the appetizers to the desserts we could not have had a better meal anywhere. After a hot day wondering around Prague with its crowds, this place was a haven. The food, the wine, the service were all incredible. If you miss eating here you miss an incredible part of this amazing city! One more thing - they are very accommodating if you have food allergies.

Yelp
Very elegant atmosphere. We came for lunch - no reservation needed. We were the only ones there! Staff was attentive and kind, made good recommendations. We had the rabbit with pork belly and the duck. Both were excellent. I would order either one again in a heartbeat. Sauces were divine and plenty of them. meats were perfectly cooked. Building is OLD and beautiful.

Yelp
We were walk-ins. No reservations. The hotel concierge tried to call and place a reservation but to no avail. So we just walked over. The woman who opened the door warned us the kitchen was going to close in 30 minutes. We were fine with the time constraints. This was our first restaurant we visited in Prague for this trip. Other diners in the front dining room were a young-ish man and woman. Couldn't help but overhearing the conversation but she was getting friend-zoned. All of this was occurring with a live piano player playing romantic songs. The food was very good. Duck breast, perfectly cooked. Foie gras. Beet salad, excellent. It was a nice meal in a beautiful dining room.

Yelp
Intimate, quaint, and serving excellent food but needs some fine-tuning to become great This is a small, intimate restaurant, and reservations are necessary. The concierge at Carlo IV arranged our reservations, and we were placed upstairs in what could be described as a cross between an intimate piano lounge and a grandmother's dining room. The dining area was filled with paintings, model ducks, pictures, novelties, and other kitsch. But the design features worked creating a unique, homey yet upscale environment. The top floor had a small piano with a pianist that played American classics from jazz to show tunes. Food: Duck Breast with Apricots - final preparation flambé table-side. Fantastic duck. The flavors and tenderness rival duck we had in Beijing. And the sauce in which the duck was served was incredible. Grilled Deer Saddle - Simply perfect deer. Reminded me of the best deer that I had in the past, in Vienna last year. But this deer may have been even better. Served with dumplings. The deer medallions were not hot, the gravy was just warm, and the dumplings were cold. I asked the waiter about the intended temperature of the dumplings, and he said they should be hot. So I asked for mine to be reheated. He had them reheated promptly. I speculate that plating was not done in the proper order. My deer and dumplings were probably plated first not taking into account the time needed for table-side preparation of the duck. Amateur mistake for fine dining. Price: Total 1398 Kc before tip for the two entrees and one beer. Service: Our waiter was very impatient with us when we arrived. He tried to rush us to order. We refused to be rushed and took our time. Overall our waiter was not friendly nor likeable. Overall cleanliness: very good Bathroom cleanliness: very good Wifi: no WiFi, and our waiter was unapologetic about the lack of WiFi. Fortunately we were able to access a nearby network with a very weak signal.

Yelp
I had no clue that U Modre Kachnicky meant "The Little Blue Duck" until today. Appropriate, since the room we sat in was blue, and I had the best duck I've ever had in my life here. UMK was a recommendation from a foodie friend, and I'm so glad we booked it. My one warning is that it was quite toasty in there, so would recommend layer instead of wearing a sweater if it's cold out. On the night we went, they had live piano music upstairs, which was a sweet touch. We had: CZECH WINE: Our server, who was very knowledgeable and helpful, recommended a great Czech red wine for us. CZECH BREAD: They brought of a basket of Czech bread for us to start and they explained what each one was. Thought that was a nice touch, especially not being from the area. PHEASANT WITH PLUM SAUCE: I'm not a huge pheasant person in general, but this dish was awesome. The pheasant was nicely cooked and the plum sauce was flavorful. FLAMBEED DUCK: Oh. My. WORD. PERFECT duck in a multi-dimensional green pepper sauce. Annoyed all of my dining partners by exclaiming "THIS IS INCREDIBLE" after pretty much eat bite and continuing to talk about this dish periodically for the remainder of our trip. Also, the almond potato croquettes are amazing. Highly, HIGHLY recommend. This entree is absolutely magical. Although this place is expensive by Prague standards, it was worth every penny.

Yelp
Amazing food, great service, authentic atmosphere! A true gem and never disappoints. We didn't have a reservation but got seated after being taken upstairs and were paired with a fantastic waiter who truly made this experience unforgettable.

Yelp
Amazing ambience in old world Czech charm. Impeccable service and the most flavorful duck I've ever had. I'll return for sure.

Yelp
Charming, family-run traditional Czech restaurant in quiet neighborhood west of the river. Excellent, attentive service. Quirky (in a good way) decor that is warm, interesting and even romantic. We had the sampler appetizer with smoked duck, duck liver pate and venison with tasty accompanying sauces as shared starter. We tried two of the duck main courses and both were outstanding. No seared flavorless duck breasts here. Rich but not heavy, traditional but not boring.

Yelp
Had a very nice experience for dinner with my parents. We booked the very day and since it wasnt crowded, we got a table (I didnt ask for it) in front of the piano player (who is damn great). The staff was very efficient and kind ! The food was served in good proportions and good. I had a roasted duck with honey sauce, while the others got lamb. We found the czech wine choosen by the sommelier (who comes to your table) better than the chianti. The atmosphere and the decorum is really well done (especially upstairs) and I guess would fit an intimate dinner. It has a touch from the beginning of the 20 century mixed a curiosity cabinet and treasure who seems to have been found from some adventure overseas.

Yelp
So far, worst food I've had in Prague. Dry, no flavor, pricey, slow service, and easily confused waiters. Even the duck was a huge disappointment. The apple strudel was awful and soggy. The venison with horseradish starter was acceptable. If you have to eat here, stick to the soup. The building is charming but even that fades once you realize the same cheesy motif and the same photos are repeated at most tables. The piano player upstairs is the only reason I got through the meal.

Yelp
I can't believe this place only has a few reviews. We thought it was fantastic! Located on a quiet street around the corner from our apartment in the Mala Strana, U Modré kachničky is the perfect place to treat yourself or someone else, especially if you like duck. The building itself is over 400 years old, and has dining rooms on multiple floors. J and I had the whole place to ourselves for lunch in the front dining room where we felt like Lord and Lady of the manor. We started with warm bread, herb and salted butters, a warm goat cheese salad, and mushroom soup. All delicious! Then onto roast duck with apples, raisins, honey and gratinated potato purée with coriander and roast duck with bacon Brussels sprouts and garlic potato pancakes. Absolutely the best duck I've had in a long time. Crispy skin, tender meat, and the leg and thigh were so enormous, I took most of it home to enjoy later. We were too full to enjoy dessert, but hopefully the next time we find ourselves in the neighborhood, this place will still be there waiting to lure us in. Kudos to the waiter for giving us a tour of the place before we left. It's an absolute gem.

Yelp
Another "Lonely Planet" recommendation. Very chic restaurant where we have eaten some czech specialtites in a high-class atmosphere. Next to the tram station, the mandarin Hotel and in front of the Norwegian Embassy, this restaurant looks like a fisherman tavern from the outside. However, the inside is like a lot of czech monuments : baroque. As usual in this kind of restaurant, the waiters are aware and ready to attend at any of our needs. If you were looking for beers, forget it because they only have a wine menu. She had the duck cooked with a honey and "grand marnier" sauce and I had a roasted honey duck. She had some regrets after we received our food because the duck was too cooked while my plate was delicious. For dessert, I had an Apfelstrudel while she ordered a chesenut cake. I really liked my dessert and specialy the side of nuts. Unfortunately, she couldn't finish her dessert considering that it was a huge slice and, has she said, too sweet. Be aware that because it's a classy restaurant, the prices are uncommon for Prague.

Andries V.

Yelp
Very poor price/quality ratio. A very expensive place by Prague standards and nothing more than average food. The salad was good. The duck was just average. The dessert was very poor: just one teeny-tiny scoop of sorbet ice cream. This being a rather pretentious place, be prepared to drink wine only (no more than 2 types of beer are available), and be prepared to pay for it generously.

C Z.

Yelp
I loved this place. The decor is cool in a kitschy kind of way. I brought some locals here for a dinner and they were raving about the food and wine. The waitress/hostess was nice without being fake, very genuine and super personable. She gave us recommendations and helped to describe the dishes in English (for me) so that was appreciated. Thanks for a nice night, my Czech friends can't stop talking about it a week later how delicious the food was!!

Yelp
I would rate this place high on my list. Large portioned, excellent quality food. Duck is there specialty as in their name. Pheasant salad delicious and authentic. Roasted duck right on target with brussel sprouts and potato pancake. Kind, efficient service. Delicious dessert.

Annie C.

Yelp
If we had only ordered the duck, I would have rated this restaurant a 5. The duck is superb. We ordered the degustation menu at 950 CK which was very good value but too much food. The pheasant was not good. I ordered just The wild boar and it was very tasty with wonderful beers as vegetable. This is a restaurant I will return to major in the duck dishes. There is a reason for their name - The Blue Duckling, after all.

Qype User (ianfor…)

Yelp
This is a bit weird place - the staff is nice, but a bit confused. The food is a bit of old-style gourmet, but I would not necessarilly call it delicious though. Overall this place loses on the price/performance ratio.
