15 Best Museums in Cape Town

"Although Irma Stern was one of South Africa's more prolific artists, the Irma Stern Museum isn't heaving with tourists. Set inside the artist's former home and studio outside of the Cape Town CBD, the museum is fairly off the beaten track. The space is quiet and intimate, with a bright interior filled with Stern's paintings and furniture. The museum is fairly small and manageable, so you won't be traipsing around for hours keeping your eyes peeled for the first empty seat you spot. If you have the time, don't forget to explore the tranquil garden." - Mary Holland

Beautifully curated home and garden of a South African legend. Lovely atmosphere, special works of art by a unique and fabulously talented woman. Definitely worth a visit. Seeing Irma's studio and favourite armchair, her paintbrushes and work coat, all contributed to a memorable experience.

Irma Stern Museum is located at the UCT lower campus, but is open to not only students. Free of charge for students but adults may look into the entry prices. Entry on Thurs and Fri from 10am to 5pm. Whilst on Sat it is 10am to 2pm Interesting fact about I.S Museum: Stern crafted works of paintings, and the very last work of hers was left as incomplete as it was upon her death in the studio part of the house/museum. Check it out at the musuem. The house and studio, turned into a Museum, gives an antique life feeling, which is good to experience. It's like time travel to the 50s with the future and all. Also, the garden outdoors is very lovely. I think I saw a cherry tree or it might be so prunes. But it is all there in the garden (at the very end of it) take the stroll and enjoy!

Fantastic collection of Irma Stern artworks, antiquities and gifts given to the artist by other artists and during her travels. Three of the rooms are supposedly in their original state. Upstairs there is a contemporary art gallery. Gorgeous large garden.

Fab little museum showcasing Irma Stern’s work, art collection & studio as it may have looked. The house itself is a work of a art what with the colourful walls & designs painted on all the furniture.

Great museum. Beautiful house and lots of aesthetically pleasing artworks. Athi-Patra as a resident artist was phenomenal

A very special home museum of iconic artist Irma Stern. Current Georgina Gratrix exhibition The Cult of Ugliness is a brilliant tribute by a spunky artist with a wicked wit. Listen in to the Sanlam Arts Round Up today, Fri 30 September, to find out more. See news blog on mapmyway.co.za
