Uga Ulagalla, Thirappane, Sri Lanka - Explore & Book

"After a hot and dusty day exploring the 2000-year-old Buddhist temples, vast dagobas and ruinous monasteries of the ancient cities, Uga Ulagalla, ideally located in the heart of the Cultural Triangle, is quite possibly the perfect place to replenish. Within the extensive 58-acre grounds are fantastic views at every turn: neat, unfeasibly green paddy fields sprinkled with birdlife, sparkling reservoirs and untamed scrubland. Couples and honeymooners will revel in this secluded, natural setting. But the real joy is the huge, luxurious villas, each in their own scenic cocoon of nature set apart from the others. This is no bird spotter’s hideout, however, as interiors resemble a high design apartment complete with glass-walled views of lush forest or emerald-coloured fields. Your tasteful bedroom is the height of comfort and pared-down luxury, the expansive bathroom shimmies with minimalism, and the cherry on the cake is the deep blue plunge pool bedecked by a chic double lounger. And there’s no need to worry about your eco impact, Uga are leaders in environmental design who have created one of the largest solar farms in Sri Lanka here, walls are made from recycled rice paddy, they have reverse osmosis water purification, plus there's an organic edible garden with over 40 varieties. Drop in at the Coco Spa for a Balinese therapy, watch peacocks and monkeys in the grounds, find out more about the local elephants in the on-site research centre, and meet the horses in the stable. To round off your day enjoy the Nachchaduwa Scenic Drive through the local village ending up with sundowners by a picturesque lake, then return to the 150-year-old Walawwa mansion for a gourmet three-course dinner. What a wonderful place! Highs Spacious, well-appointed and contemporary accommodations each with private plunge pools Outstanding service and a warm welcome from staff Seeing nature from your room – we spotted a troupe of monkeys and a peacock doing his impressive mating dance, plus numerous brightly coloured birds; over 70 types of bird and 100 species of butterfly flit in the grounds Delicious food whether in the serene Liyawela Restaurant – we loved overlooking the ever-changing luminescent fibre-optic swimming pool – or the signature Kamatha dinner under banyan trees by the paddy field The peaceful location, which is so well-positioned for UNESCO-listed attractions and national parks of the Cultural Triangle Lows Not only are the rooms expensive, so are drinks, activities and spa treatments The grounds are spacious and your villa may be a bit of a distance from the restaurant and main pool, so you need take golf carts to get about the resort (don't forget to bring small notes for tipping) No local restaurants to explore for a change of scene; vary your meals by having the Kamatha dinner, a bbq by the pond, dining by the pool, or private in-villa dining" - Harriet Whiting

Uga Ulagalla (Thirappane, Sri Lanka) 2 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Ulagalla Resort inhabits a largely unspoiled 58-acre estate outside the city of Anuradhapura, capital of Sri Lanka’s North Central Province and home to some well-preserved and seriously ancient Buddhist shrines. To ensure that the land remains a suitable home for the peacocks and monkeys that roam freely through its fields and forests, Ulagalla keeps its footprint minimal, generating half its energy from an on-site solar farm and providing bicycles so guests can traverse the expansive grounds without leaving too much of a mark. In short, it’s an eco-resort that doesn’t takes the “eco” part lightly." - Tablet Hotels

Our stay at this hotel was absolutely amazing. The environment is so beautiful and peaceful just perfect for relaxing. Every time we walked out of our villa, we passed stunning paddy fields and lush nature all around. It truly felt like a hidden paradise. Our villa was spacious and came with a private pool, which made the experience even more special. The food was delicious, and the calm atmosphere helped us unwind completely. What touched us most was the kindness of the staff. When our daughter wasn't feeling well, the team went above and beyond to look after us and make sure we were okay. Their care and support meant lot to us. We highly recommend this place to anyone looking for natural beauty, great service, and a relaxing stay. Thank you to all the amazing staff.

What a beautiful escape. It is a luxurious place, yet feels welcoming and relaxed. Staff are friendly, discreet & efficient. We felt so well looked after.|Accommodation is wonderfully comfortable. We stayed for 3 nights but would’ve happily stayed longer. Food was delicious too, and for the last night we had booked the Kamatha experience - and we’re very glad we did! It was a special occasion for us, but would highly recommend it anyway. Staying here will be one of the highlights of our big tour of Sri Lanka.

Ravi took really good care of us I asked did everyone and they were so sweet with our toddler son. The swimming pool is among the most beautiful we have ever visited. A gorgeous place where you can just relax or use as a base to go visit Anudurahapura and Sigiriya etc...The individual villas are beautifully appointed and big. The main building where the bar and restaurant are based is a beautiful old Sri Lankan mansion house. They offer interesting activities. I went on the scenic ride with picnic which was informative as well as beautiful.

We stayed with Uga Ulagalla in last May and had an amazing experience! The staff were friendly and welcoming, the room was clean and comfortable, and the amenities were top-notch. The location was perfect, with beautiful sun sets either by paddy fields or by the lake..... Ms Yoshina, I just wanted to say thank you for the amazing birthday surprise. It truly made my day special and your warmth and friendliness is truly remarkable. The team restaurant is very friendly and they knew exactly what we want and will always come back for the "Maid Tea".....Overall, I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great place to stay. Can't wait to come back!" 😊👍

Uga Ulagalla is located in Thirappane, a 30 minute drive from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka. |This location is not really central to visiting the other usual sightseeing locations within the Cultural Triangle of Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Dambulla Cave Temples, however it is an oasis of calm with a touch of luxury which makes it the ideal place to stay for some real peaceful rest between the hurry of sightseeing. |I visited Ulagalla back in 2015 but didn't stay as I was only looking at hotels, but it made an impression and I decided that one day I will visit and stay. |So, last week when I decided to take my mother and sister on a pilgrimage to Anuradhapura, I decided that we will stay at Ulagalla. ||From the very first moment we arrived we were warmly greeted and all of the staff were very attentive. From the drink and snack to the arrival ceremony, we felt very welcome and were excited to be at the resort.||The check-in was seemless and then we were taken by buggy to our chalet. |My goodness, what a beautiful chalet it was. Not just a bedroom and bathroom, but a large sitting and dining with a plunge pool area as well. ||Our stay was for 2 nights so we were really looking forward to being able to enjoy all of the facilities of the resort.||As my mother was tired from the trip, she was not able to climb the stairs to the dining area however, Manujaya, from our check-in very kindly offered to set up a dining table for us on the verandah downstairs. A very kind and thoughtful gesture which was greatly appreciated.||While dining, the General Manager, Mr Dimuthu Seelanka came to speak to us and welcome us to the resort. A wonderful gentleman who very clearly has a passion for the resort and care for the staff members. ||We had a wonderful sleep as the beds and pillows are very good and although we had to get up early to head off to visit the temples, we were able to enjoy a delicious breakfast with plenty of choice - all a la carte. You have a choice between Western and Sri Lankan breakfast dishes or you can enjoy them all!||On our return from the days activities, my sister and I headed to the pool as it was a very hot day and a cool dip was enticing. The pool is 25 metres and beautifully kept with plenty of sunbeds in the sun and shade. ||That evening we had a wonderful dining experience at a unique dining area in the resort called Kamatha. A kamatha is a shaded and treed area within an agricultural location which gives farmers shade and a place to rest and eat food before going back to work in the fields. You will see these little oases mainly in the middle of paddy fields, which is where Kamatha is located in Ulagalla.|This experience offers 25 Sri Lankan dishes beginning with the snack to accompany your cocktail or glass of wine to the snacks you have with your ginger tea at the end of the meal. |The most incredible part of this meal is that it is all made by one lady - Chef Manel, who starts work at 10am every day to begin preparing the dishes and cooks them all, one by one, on a traditional single wood fired stove. And they are all delicious.|Chef Manel takes every guest to the kitchen to explain how everything is made and showed us the kitchen and her stove with the prepared dinner all laid out in clay pots ready to eat.|Not only did we enjoy a delicious meal, but the young bartender, Theekshana was such a lovely host, offering us signature cocktails and recommendations along with some wonderful conversation. We decided on arrack and passionfruit cocktails which were delicious! He was very attentive to everyone while making each of us feel like he was individually taking care of us. ||While dining we had a lovely chat also with Miss Yoshini, the Guest Relations Manager who is enchating and delightful. Again, she spoke to each of us and then spoke to each of the other guests at Kamatha to make sure they were enjoying their meal and the unique experience. And Dimuthu, the GM also arrived on a bicycle to speak to the guests. Amazing!||I have to say that I felt very sad to leave Ulagalla as we had such a wonderful time at the resort. From our buggy drive, to the lovely Mewanka at the checkout desk, everyone made us feel very welcome and ensured our stay was not only comfortable but memorable. I also want to mention Kusal and Chanchala for their kind attention to us.||A huge thank you to all the staff and team at Uga Ulagalla. You made our stay so very special. ||We will be back for sure!
