The Best Things to Do in Bali, the Island of the Gods | Condé Nast Traveler

"Known as Bali’s “floating temple,” Pura Ulun Danu Bratan is a 17th-century Hindu-Buddhist temple set against a backdrop of lush green mountains and Lake Bratan, the second-largest lake in Bali. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is comprised of several shrines and pagoda-like structures, the most notable being the meru, a multi-tiered shrine dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of water, lakes, and rivers, located on a small island on the lake. The architecture is classic Balinese Hindu design, with ornate carvings, statues, and intricate details. There are several smaller temples within the complex, each with a unique purpose, including shrines for offerings to other deities. If you're wanting to combine culture with natural beauty on a trip through Bali's mountainous heart, here, you can also explore the nearby Sekumpul, Gitgit, or Munduk waterfalls." - Julia Eskins

This is the most beautiful temple among all and must visit destination for everyone. The environment is amazing and clean. Located a bit far away but the atmosphere was nice. Is a big park and relaxing place walking around inside. The lake is great and someone riding a boat around. Overall the entrance fees are IDR75,000 is worth it. We are 6 in families enjoy the walk around the park. It’s windy today because the rain is just stopped. 😊

Fullfilled one of the bucket list of my life. The scenery we seen in windows background wallpaper has become real Infront of my eyes. Just wow ❤️ What a place. What a beauty. The temple and surrounding is beautiful as hell. Damn.. good. Just like the pictures. It's worth every penny and seconds there. The weather was cold . It was misty which was really soothing. We can click lovely pictures even if crowd is there . Because we get good pictures from all the angles. Extra tip: the shops outside the temple , we will get items much cheaper than ubud and Seminyak if you bargain well. Trust me. Price is way cheaper than other locations we went . Especially for clothes .

Ulun Danu is one of the best attractions we visited during our Bali trip. The place is very well maintained, and the cool weather really adds to the overall charm. Definitely a must-visit if you’re in Bali. There are freelance photographers around who can take your photos and print them for you at a reasonable price. You can easily spend around 2 hours here, as there are multiple photo spots and enough space to relax. There are also restaurants nearby where you can enjoy a quick coffee break. Ample parking is available for a small fee. Entry tickets cost IDR 75,000 for adults and IDR 50,000 for kids.

A very beautiful green territory with a stunning temple . The entrance fee is 75K IDR per person, and toilets on the territory are paid separately (2K IDR). You can take photos, interact with, hug, and feed a luwak — he is very friendly and calm. A photo with the luwak costs only 30K IDR, which is absolutely worth it. There are also opportunities to take photos and videos with owls and a snake (the snake experience costs 200K IDR). It was a really interesting and memorable experience. The area is extremely green, well-maintained, and beautiful. There are several coffee shops on the territory, nice walking paths, and plenty of spots to relax. 100% recommended to visit. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

It was a very well maintained garden temple. Few sacred places inside. The temples were beautiful. Inside the small track and zoo is extra. The views are beautiful. They have onsite restaurant cafe ice cream. You can spend a whole day here easily.

⭐️ Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, Bali: A Serene Morning Visit We visited the iconic Pura Ulun Danu Beratan early in the morning, which was an excellent decision! The complex was wonderfully peaceful and less crowded, allowing us to fully appreciate the serene beauty of the setting. 🖼️ The Stunning Scenery The temple's location on the shores of Lake Beratan is breathtaking, especially with the surrounding hills shrouded in mist and clouds, as seen in the wide-angle photo . This misty atmosphere added a magical, almost mystical quality to the landscape. The most famous structure, the Pura Penataran Agung or the 11-tiered Meru (pagoda), standing partially submerged in the lake, was the highlight. It is a stunning sight, perfectly framed by the water and the distant green hills. Another smaller Meru is also visible, and the overall temple grounds are beautifully maintained with vibrant flowers and greenery . 🌿 Garden and Entryway Attractions Before reaching the main lake temple, the entrance area features beautiful, manicured gardens. There is a prominent stone sign that reads "Ulun Danu Beratan BALI" alongside a traditional tower replica and a large, colorful Koi fish fountain shooting water into the air. This area provides a great photo opportunity and welcomes visitors. We also walked through the elegant stone paths leading to other temple pavilions and courtyards, like the one seen in the photo . The architectural details, framed by neat lawns and flower beds, were impressive and provided a deeper look into the temple complex's design. 👍 Recommendation: Go Early! I highly recommend visiting Pura Ulun Danu Beratan as early as possible. Our morning timing meant we avoided the mid-day rush, resulting in a tranquil experience and fantastic, atmospheric photos. The cool, crisp air is also a welcome change from the coastal heat. The earlier you arrive, the more likely you are to capture the beautiful fog rolling over the lake and mountains.

This was okay. What I really enjoyed about my trip here was the mountain roads on the way, and on the way back. There are some very impressive views around here, you just need to hunt for the good viewpoints. Also the mini zoo is worth mentioning. There are some owls, a snake, and a fruit bat you can take your picture with. The admission wasn't too bad here at 75k, but there is nothing special about this place in my opinion. The location is good, but I don't think it is worth spending extra money on.

The Ulun Danu Beratan Temple (also known as Pura Ulun Danu Bratan) is widely considered one of Bali's most beautiful and iconic landmarks. It is having stunning natural setting, spiritual significance, and picturesque architecture, though some also note its popularity as a tourist destination. Stunning Location and Scenery: The temple is set on the tranquil shores of Lake Bratan in the cool, misty Bedugul highlands. The multi-tiered shrines (meru) appear to be floating on the water's surface, especially when the lake level is high, making it one of the most photographed spots in Indonesia. Aesthetic and Photogenic: The combination of the temple, the lake's reflection, the lush manicured gardens, and the mountain backdrop creates a truly spectacular and "must-see" visual experience. It's often referred to as the "floating temple of Bali." Spiritual Significance: It is an important Hindu water temple dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of water, rivers, and lakes, and plays a vital role in Bali's traditional *subak* irrigation system. Cooler Weather: Located about 1,200 meters above sea level, the area offers a refreshing break from the heat of the coastal regions. Accessibility: The grounds are generally well-maintained and easy for all types of visitors, including families and older travelers, to explore. Best Time to Visit: To avoid the crowds and the mist/fog that can roll in during the afternoon, it is highly recommended to visit early in the morning (around 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM). This also provides the best lighting for photos. Cash Only:Entrance fees and payments at many local stalls require cash. Boat Rides:For a unique view, visitors can take a traditional boat ride on Lake Beratan. The general consensus is that despite being a popular tourist spot, the sheer beauty of the temple's setting makes it absolutely worth visiting for anyone exploring central Bali.
