Puerto Rico's Less Visited West Coast Is Finally Getting Its Due

"I got a chance to study the geology of the shoreline further the next morning on a 20-minute walk to Uma's restaurant on Jobos Beach, where I chatted with the instructors from Moku Surf shop next door before an exhilarating session in the warm turquoise sea."

21 Best Restaurants in Puerto Rico | Condé Nast Traveler

"Uma's, perched perfectly on the sands of Playa Jobos in the far northwest of the island, is your quintessential beachfront surf shack: just a handful of umbrella-covered tables on an open-air deck. Vibes are breezy and relaxed, especially at sunset, when the beach empties out. The menu is scribbled on a chalkboard sign and changes daily, but you can expect catch-of-the-day seafood, big colorful salads, and delicious Russian dumplings (yes, you read that correctly). Order the flatbread if it's available: it's baked fresh daily and served with fresh-caught fish and a tangy homemade salsa." - Kris Fordham

We thought we came late enough to get lunch but they were only serving breakfast. The breakfast menu is really small. Not tons to choose from. They were also out of some stuff. The food was good but just disappointed that we couldn’t order lunch. I did enjoy the breakfast burrito. The restaurant has a nice ocean view.

Google
This restaurant was fantastic! Great food and a beautiful ocean side view! I had the coconut curry and it was the best curry I’ve ever had and the cocktails were also fantastic. The staff was phenomenal, we had Edgar and Jeyrelis !! Service was very quick and they were so friendly, they even gave us directions to the boardwalk and did a birthday suprise! 10/10 recommend!!!!

Hannah Feintuch

Google
Highly recommend the fish bites. They were really amazing. Good vibes, good food. Ocean views, walking distance to swimmable beach (though there are rocks). Went twice on our trip

John McGhee

Google
Great views of the waves and beach here. The bartenders are on point with keeping you beer heavy. Mixed drinks were also on point. The chicken bites and chicken shish kabobs were juicy and perfectly grilled.

Our waitress was so kind and food was SO yummy. The beautiful view was the cherry on top:) definitely recommend

Google
Gorgeous location, beachfront view with access very close. Helpful, bilingual staff. Full menu starts at noon. You might get into the parking "lot" but you'll need a few friends to help maneuver you out

Google
While staying in Isabela, my crew and I visited 3 times. I really like their breakfast food. The burrito and N.Y bagel is amazing. Highly recommend to eat the N.Y bagel there while because it's still nice and warm. The omelette however wasn't special so I wouldn't recommend it. Also had shrimp tacos for dinner and it was great too. The shrimp was nice and crunchy. Very wide range of selection for food tho. It is right next to the beach where you can just walk to the beach and chill or at least walk off your food. The bilingual servers were all so nice and helpful. The only thing is that if you have a huge group, they made some mistakes on the orders.

Can’t go wrong on the ocean! Great Mojitos! Park on the road, walk in. Low key, good food.

Yelp
Always one of my favorites meals in Isabela! Vero (like Veronica) is very pleasant and attentive. Fish kebabs, fish bites and fish tacos are all great! And don't miss the coconut flan!

Yelp
If I could, I would give this place NO STARS. The service was HORRIBLE. The waitresses were so rude! I never got the food I ordered and waited over 30 minutes for. There was a family using the restaurant like their own personal deck. Allowing more than 6 children run through back and forth on and off of the deck as the adults sat and ate and drank. A table of 4 adults who came in after me and my partner were fully served all their drinks and food which is what made me ask for a status. Then when I asked for a status of my food they asked me if I wanted another plate bc they didn't notice I never got my original plate. They admitted they had forgotten and then caught an attitude with me because I decided not to continue to wait and asked them to just cancel it. Meanwhile other families were receiving proper service, there were only 2 other tables occupied so it wasn't a situation where they were busy. Maybe if I was a tourist I would have gotten better service. So disappointing!! The views are so beautiful but I can sit on the beach for the same views. I will make sure my ppl don't go there to be mistreated.

Yelp
Flew in from NY where we're fans of the Umas in Rockaway NY. Me and the family were not disappointed. The fish empanadas were something I've never tasted in my life and they were fluffy like a zeppoli and had flavor that wasn't fishy at all. The fish tacos were not what I expected (was thinking Cali style tacos) and it was very good with multiple layers of flavor. The seaweed salad and carrots gave it a slight salty taste, the fried fish was the crunch cooked to perfection and the red onions have a slight spice with the cooking cabbage and drizzle of sauce. Tostones we're huge and filling. Loved the cilantro lime sauce with the empanadas. Would highly recommend anyone visiting to stop by.

Yelp
Umas is a great spot for fresh fish tacos with a view. They have a daily menu and their desserts are delish! Try the tembleque. The staff are friendly and quick. They will modify orders and change things up if you ask. We had a great experience!

Yelp
Umas is a beach bar with a great location on Jobos beach. It is right next to Moka, where you can rent surf boards, beach chairs and umbrellas. Food is average - we had fries, octopus salad and wings plus cocktails. The fries and wings both seemed previously frozen and the octopus salad seemed to be out of a can. Drinks (mojitos) were fresh and strong. On the day we visited, our server, who was new, was very good, and the bartender was also great, friendly and helpful. Umas has a decent size parking lot where cars double/triple/quadruple park. But somehow, as long as you let a server or bartender know which car is yours, it all works and people are respectful and ok moving cars as needed to let others out and in. So, a 3-star rating based on service and location; took 2 stars off for average food quality. Sorry no pics - didn't seem worth it.

Claire H.

Yelp
Food was okay, service was terrible. Rude staff, non accommodating, and super slow. There's so many other restaurants on this beach, pick a different one so staff doesn't ruin your relaxing and fun beach day.

Yelp
Love Umas. Every Sunday. I have the New Yorker and coffee. Everyone is so pleasant. I love how they welcome me. They used to me already. Thank you

Yelp
Love this place! Sorry it took me so long into my trip before I got here. Views are amazing, Javier and staff are great. Bathrooms are clean, foods yummy! First came here one night w my host, but the kitchen was closed. I instantly knew I wanted to come back. Bestie arrived and I figured it'd be the best place to take her too. Javier waited on us and was an absolute sweetheart. I don't remember what I was originally drinking but Javier suggested the rum punch, and that became my go to. I fell in love w queso frito and ate it like everywhere. I just wasn't a fan of the guava sauce. I had a cilantro sauce instead. The chicken wings are super flavorful too, and the barbecue sauce had a nice flavor. Yelp says they're open til midnight, it's more like 10. I don't think anything around here is open that late. 10/10:30 seems to be about it. I went back again for dinner, I tried the Hawaiian garlic shrimp. Fabulous! My last full day here we came back for breakfast. I'd been doing myself a disservice by not doing that earlier. Water was crystal clear, just a beautiful way to start the day, and breakfast was quite tasty. I had the New Yorker. The bacon was so flavorful. The bread was thick, but I had bird friends to share with. I will go back when I return, but like this whole town, this place is a gem!!

Chris M.

Yelp
Great food, ambiance and service... excellent find. Fish is so fresh & pina colada's and coffee are delicious.

Erin T.

Yelp
Everything we ordered was so good! A beautiful view of the beach as you chow down. Ordered classic fish tacos and honestly were the best food we'd had throughout our vacay in PR. The coconut mojito was also refreshing!

Yelp
Ate a late lunch at Uma's last week with 8 of my friends. We all ordered I the Tuna Poke bowl and devoured the entire dish. I also ordered Tostones as a side. Uma's is usually very busy and has a very long wait time for your food to arrive, but this time we were all served very quickly. The food was excellent, and the vibes were relaxed, enjoying the salty air and watching people surf on Jobos Beach. Definitely try the mojitos!!!!

Julia P.

Yelp
O..m...g the most phenomenal tuna rice bowl EVER! It was so delicious and packed with flavor. I also got a Caesar salad (added chicken) when I went for the second time, and I'm usually not a big fan, but it was also very good. If you stop by, definitely go for the sautéed (or raw) tuna rice bowl.. unforgettable!!

Loretta C.

Yelp
Excellent. View is simply amazing! Food was very good. We had the fish bites and lentil soup. Both were excellent. Also had the hummus, it was good. Tuna poke bowl was excellent. Service was very good. A hidden gem. I may never leave Uma's. I returned again for breakfast and dinner. Caesar salad v good. French toast and oatmeal were excellent.

Yelp
This was my first time at this restaurant, and I enjoyed it tremendously. I had never heard of it, but my co-pilot suggested that we eat there. It's off the beaten path, so this isn't the type of restaurant you would just drop by. The owner, Conrad, stopped by our table chatted for awhile. Believe it or not, he's from Philadelphia! The story of him being in Puerto Rico and opening a local restaurant is quite interesting. He is a great guy, with a great restaurant. Uma is a casual, beachside restaurant. The beach access and view is unbeatable. Conrad only serves fresh food, including fresh-caught fish. Hence, the menu is posted on a chalkboard that changes daily. I started off with an iced latte, while my co-pilot went surfing. It was windy, and there was a riptide. The waves were great, but he got thrashed. I enjoyed my iced latte. Quite tasty. For dinner, I had the grilled mahi-mahi kabobs, served with fresh pico and tostones. It was my first time trying tostones, which are smashed and fried plantains. It seemed a little dry, but I have no previous experience for comparison. The mahi-mahi kebab was served hot on a skewer. It was wonderfully flavorful, tender, and generally succulent! Yaaaaaas! The service was friendly and timely. They were busy, but no one tried to rush us away. I will go out of my way to visit this place again. Capt. Brad

Yelp
Today, our waitress Chantel rocked!! Great service, great food, excellent views right on the water at Jobos. Thank you Umas, now your great food is a matched with great service! TY Chantel! Hb

Yelp
Came here for a light dinner and had a tasty wahoo kebab with beans and rice, which had bacon in it. Uh, yum. Dani behind the bar is fabulous. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
I was here about a week ago.. .. came in an hour into opening and got seated right away! Service: good! The waitress let us know that unfortunately she was the only one working the whole place so to be patient with her. I appreciated that but still service did not take long. Food: could have been better. The items on the menus were straightforward and catering to a very western crowd. I would've like to see more local items on the menu. We had the Greek omelette and pancakes and they were good, nothing special. Ambiance: amazing!! It's a very laid back shack vibe right in Jobos beach. Could've had many more mimosas and spend the day here but it was very windy. Will definitely come back!

Yelp
We had a beyond fantastic experience here. The entire ambiance of the place is great, location on the beach can't be beat, a menu written on a chalk board, chill vibes, and good food. Please do yourself a favor and get the passion fruit mojito, it was delicious and strong! The food was great, and the service was wonderful. I guess it's possible that a more relaxed beach hut restaurant like this can have various people working here which may change the experience, otherwise I can't imagine how it ever gets anything less than 4-5 stars. They hit it out of the park, and we will definitely be back! Our waitress was cheerful, smiling, and everyone eating seemed to be having a great time. Nice place to watch the sunset too.

Alani R.

Yelp
The food is delicious!! Perfect spot to eat after surfing jobos. The lentil soup is super yummy and comes with homemade chips. The spicy pumpkin empanadas are also great! They have lots of vegetarian options.

Daymis C.

Yelp
Food is okay. Coffee is okay. View is amazing. Nice staff. Parking available exclusively for their customers. You can see surfers from the beach.

Stacey S.

Yelp
Food was fresh. Fish tacos delicious. Cannot beat the drinks and sitting on the beach watching the waves. Grab a surfboard next door and hit the water. Totally awesome. Great vibe. People of Puerto Rico are fantastic. Feels like you are in the heart of surf country.

Yelp
Umas restaurant is not just a amazing oceanfront location ...but the food was fresh and delicious! Service staff was incredibly welcoming and attentive. A special shout out to our waitress, Chantel. Umas is a GEM and we will be returning

Yelp
This place needs new management. I've gone four (4) times since January 2020-Jan 16, 2021. All four times, I've had to leave without eating anything because they were unable to serve us. I've gone with family, friends, and just my husband on date night. Twice they've been about to close. Once was for Pandemic. While Uma's was indeed open, they would not serve us because they had to close at 9 pm. but we arrived at 7:30 pm. They were closing early so the staff could get home before curfew. However, I did call ALL DAY long to confirm these operating hours. They don't answer the phone because the bartender said there is no physical phone at the restaurant so nobody is to answer it to tell you what time they close. Also, Uma's doesn't update their business hours on Google (so easy to do), so you won't know what time they really close. That was the excuse for two other visits to Uma's. Then there was yesterday. We arrived at 6:15 pm. and the server gave us the disclaimer that the food was taking more than 1 hour so we should reconsider staying unless we had loads of patience. We ordered drinks instead; one beer and one gin and tonic. The beer arrived, but no gin and tonic. Since my husband was already finishing the beer, I asked the bartender about my drink but she didn't know anything, then I asked the server and nothing, then the second server, and it just never came. We paid $8 for a cup of beer (solo cup) and had to leave again with no food. Uma's has the best location, vibe, and beach view. However, the management needs to get its act together.

Yelp
Must try! Fun local beach spot with fun delicious options! Great ambiance with cool staff!

Yelp
I've been eating here ever since my first visit to Puerto Rico. The Grouper ceviche and the octopus salad are to die for and let's not forget the fried cheese and guava sauce.

Danielle H.

Yelp
In Aguadilla and a friend recommended Umas for lunch. This spot is cute and funky. The location is perfect because it is directly on the beach. My group of 7 went in at about 3:30 pm on a Tuesday afternoon and we seated ourselves. The restaurant was not busy at this time of day. We were greeted by our server and she had our drinks out in no time. Our food was also out in a timely manner. We had the shrimp mofongo, chicken mofongo, poke bowl and chicken kebabs. Everything was served hot and it was all delicious. We were not disappointed. If in Aguadilla I highly recommend Umas for a nice relaxing lunch/dinner by the beach. They have parking and food is reasonably priced plus it's all delicious.

Elliot M.

Yelp
Extremely rude staff, slow service, minuscule portions and mediocre food. They clearly pay people for fake 5 star reviews too cuz they're a bunch of 1 stars on Google. I paid 18 bucks for 6 pieces of shrimp. Avoid big time if you value making good decisions
google avatar

Tara G.

Yelp
Definitely the best view in town with great food and service. A wide variety of menu items and a lovely bar to grab a drink and head right down the steps to the water.
google avatar

Albert T.

Yelp
Great spot. Food was fresh and the service was awesome. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend stopping in for a cocktail and bites.
google avatar

Valentina M.

Yelp
One of the most delightful parts of going to this beach. Such a wonderful beach restaurant, with breakfast and lunch. I love the ice coffee, super addicting! Food and service is also amazing!
google avatar

Bob T.

Yelp
Favorite bar and place to eat in Isabela. First, location is the best overlooking the Jobos break. Great for watching surfers or the sunset. Tables are 10-15 feet from the ocean. Second, fish is super fresh, and based on what they caught that afternoon. We had the fish of the day, empanadas, shrimp, and tuna. All were lights out. Third, it has a real funky vibe - surfer dudes, tourists, families, and locals. Forth, great bar with a nice mix of drinks
google avatar

Jenny R.

Yelp
Rice bowl with 'snooky' grilled to perfection with a green papaya and carrot slaw, grilled chicken kebabs and a coco mojito. If the view isn't enough the food puts it over the top.
google avatar

Cris R.

Yelp
It was late so we knew we could count on Umas. The food was mediocre and salty. All 3 dishes were the same. Paid a lot for a little bit of food. Next time get out early and go to a better place. Location is great but that's it.
google avatar

Pilla G.

Yelp
I say if you can avoid this place for food do so , drink service was okay felt like I was ignored but eventually did get drinks. Came back for dinner and totally regretted it, food service took over an hour and didn't get some of our orders didn't even give us a full refund on the items they didn't have, food they did have wasn't good and service just totally blowed left feeling very frustrated
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
Worst service ever!! The girls at the bar are rude and has no sense helping customers. I waited over 10 minutes to get my check while the bartenders saw me waiting and didn't approach me.
google avatar

Nisa C.

Yelp
We flew in from Houston and stayed by the beach. There are a couple of restaurants so options are limited. We went to bojos beach and decided to try this place. ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! We ordered the red snapper platter, really delicious if you combine it with amarillos (fried plantains)! We ordered the ceviche....BOMB!!!! (You have an option of your side flatbread or tostones... we picked tostones.) Then the best part came...the fish empanadas! The freaking best! I can say that because we tried them at sonido del mar (down the street) and it was not the same! Drinks and cocktails were bomb too. We tried a chichaito shot!
google avatar

Ron K.

Yelp
You can't go wrong. The beach is amazing. The food is off the hook. I mean, Uma is a bit of a magician. Best slaw I've ever eaten, hands down. Comes with the Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp. And I'm not much into empanadas, but the fish empanadas are , I'm sure, what every other empanada wishes it could be. Any day when Jimmy is bartending, you're never getting better service.
google avatar

Joe L.

Yelp
I had the flat bread with avocado grouper coconut rice and shredded carrots and cabbage. It was excellent and the location is right on Jobos beach which was pretty crowded and lively on a Sunday.

Carrie S.

Yelp
Positives: Awesome location, good drinks, clean bathroom, decent food Negative: Attitude of server, out of many of many menu choices. On our recent trip to PR, we went to Uma's three times. First time rudely greeted by a sever but then another server helped us and turned the experience around. Second time, same negative waitress, served us and was miserable. Made us feel like we were bothering her. Made us feel uncomfortable and not really able to enjoy the food/experience. Based on the location, we went back. The same server was there. Was even more rude than the first two times- absolutely terrible. No greeting, no smile, did not explain that half the items were not available and just said sorry don't have It when we tried to order, just flat out rude. We canceled our order and went to a place that appeared to value our business. Management needs to open their eyes and see how staff are treating guest. I am sure that this was not the expectation. They have a great location and potential.
google avatar

Joel C.

Yelp
Terrible service everytime. Only reason I do come back is because it's usually the only place left open to get some food. The waitress are all rude, there's never paper in the bathrooms, the chef calls out sick. I can go on forever lol this place needs a re opening with better staff and prices.
google avatar

Greg B.

Yelp
Delicious food and great waterfront views! Limited menu, due to just recently opening since the Hurricane, but everything we had was fantastic. I had the Tuna poke, which was fantastic and fresh. The others both had the flat bread with Wahoo, and loved it. The flat bread was great. Also service here was excellent, which is not the norm in Puerto Rico based on my short time here.

Rick W.

Yelp
I have been to Uma's many times pre COVID. Disappointed with the Tuna bowl. Way to much soy sauce and salt I had a reaction after eating. Not the Pico de Gallo as on the menu. Hawaiian pineapple shrimp was average. Great location. Drinks we're good.
google avatar

Jeremy L.

Yelp
Super friendly service. Great food. On the beach. What more do you want? I had the tuna mofongo with the breadfruit. Delicious. My wife had a tuna poke bowl. Not quite as good, but still delicious. Add some cheap beer and some food for the kids and it's a winner.

Tyler M.

Yelp
Very cool location right on the beach, otherwise it is unexceptional. Food was hit or miss, I was there with a group of 6 so we tried a few different things and it was all okay. Portions are not very large though for the price. Definitely a hippie vibe, including cleanliness and facilities so factor that in.

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Would definitely not recommend. The service was horrible. The waitresses were rude and super unprofessional, especially the blonde. There's absolutely no order to anything they do. The whole restaurant was chaos. No one helps you unless awkwardly chase a waitress down and ask if you can order something. Even after that everyone just does what they want. There's no organization. And then when you actually order, they do 5 other things while you're trying to talk. Which of course led to my food taking OVER AN HOUR to get, because the girl never sent my order to the kitchen. (I ordered Chicken Bites and Fries, literally the most simple order). Then the chicken was burnt and the fries were soggy. I almost cancelled my order at one point because it just wasn't worth the hassle of the chaotic restaurant. Not worth your time or money. Super unimpressed.

Megan B.

Yelp
Best margaritas we had on our trip! Went back a second day just for the margaritas and more empanadas--had both the fish and spicy pumpkin empanadas and both were great! Seemed like there was only one waitress and one bartender each time, so the service was slow but the music and view were so good, we didn't mind.
google avatar

Sravani R.

Yelp
Food was delicious!!! Ambience was pleasant and the service was good. We ordered a coconut mojito, and then another and then one more ;) kebabs and mofongo hit us right in the spot. This food was the best amongst whatever we tried in Puerto Rico.
