I’ll begin by praising the dive guides and boat crew, who were really helpful and knowledgeable. ||It’s obvious that the guides and hotel/dive club staff do not communicate well with each other, if at all. Our guides offered for us to spend a night on board their live aboard boat in the Ras Mohammed Park; we had dives planned at the Thistlegorm the next day so this was to avoid using fuel unnecessarily and to avoid our group having to wake up very early in the morning to get to the wreck in good time. Our group was told that this would be free, and we accepted the offer on that basis. The next morning, the dive centre staff refused to honour the guides’ offer and said we would need to pay €100 each (not including additional dives) for the pleasure - we did eventually reach an amicable agreement but this confusion lead to our starting the diving day later than planned and created tension when this really wasn’t necessary.||The rooms are basic - we only wanted a place to rest for the night so it did what we needed it to do. The beds were adequate and the air con worked but the unit was very noisy and outdated so take some time to figure out how the unit works to avoid being kept up all night…The door to our balcony got jammed shut on a few occasions (we did eventually manage to open it) and we found a cockroach in our bathroom. There are also no mosquito nets over the doors (the closest protection is the bed sheets).||Our issues really started when we’d started to check out/settle our invoices. The first issue came when the dive centre tried to charge us twice for the national park fees; whilst this was rectified by the centre, I would urge future guests to triple-check invoices before paying and keep hold of all booking paperwork to avoid issues when paying because the dive centre won’t bring this to your attention.||The hotel bar and restaurant was okay, again basic but nice enough. Because it opens out on to the beach, flies frequently made their way in (no mosquito nets) and we spent most of our mealtimes swatting flies off our food. Stray cats also roam around freely and frequently sit next to diners expecting food - staff don’t do anything to remove them. Bottled water was available at all times, which in the heat was a godsend. However, on the last day, bar staff tried to charge us for food/drink bills we hadn’t ordered. Again, I would urge future guests to thoroughly check charges they incur before paying or pay as you go. Another member of our group was also approached several times by a member of bar staff claiming that he had given the barman two ‘defective’ €5 notes some time after the bill was paid which gave the impression that bar staff just wanted to offload defective money on to us. It wasn’t until our group member pulled out another €5 note and literally examined it in front of the bar man that the bar man went away. ||I can’t fault diving in the Red Sea or the guides and boat crew, but I do take issue with the hotel motto ‘dive in as a guests and leave as a friend’: in my experience, you’re only a friend of Umbi Sharks Bay if you don’t question the final bill… if you do decide to book with Umbi, I’d recommend paying bills as you go rather than at the end and keep hold of your paperwork to avoid getting overcharged.
