Umbral, Curio Collection by Hilton

"Why book? Located in the heart of Centro Histórico, Hotel Umbral is an ideal outpost for art-driven travelers who seek to experience Mexico City’s aesthetic delights of past and present. Set the scene: Attracting a younger 30s and 40s set, particularly LGBTQ travelers from all over the world and Mexico, Hotel Umbral is increasingly attracting an arts-focused community of travelers who are eager to explore the Centro Histórico’s many-storied sites, as well as checking out the hotel’s own cultural hub with an on-site gallery and concept shop. The backstory: Set within the renovated 19th-century Edificio España, the development company Origen Global commissioned architecture firms nomah and JSª to form the hotel while maintaining the building’s most prominent features, including the original stairway with stainless steel railings and a skylight-capped atrium with glass mosaic flooring. The rooms: Of the hotel’s 59 guest rooms, 12 are suites that come equipped with plush sofas and vinyl record players for guests to enjoy during their stay. Each room also features artwork sourced from some of Mexico’s most interesting creatives, such as David Troice, Andrea Bores, and Disciplina Studio. Food and drink: The hotel is host to five dining options, including the upscale terrace restaurant Paxia and the more relaxed Oliva, both serving contemporary Mexican dishes with Jewish influences by chef Daniel Ovadía. The spa: While the property doesn’t have an in-house spa, it does have a partnership with SCAPE to offer in-room treatments such as deep tissue massages and exfoliating facials. The neighborhood/area: The property is set in the bustling Centro Histórico neighborhood of Mexico City near the Zócalo, the largest plaza in Latin America. Guests will be within easy walking distance of some of the city’s most historic sites, including the Templo Mayor, an important site of the ancient Aztec empire that’s now a museum, as well as Spanish-colonial structures like the National Palace and Metropolitan Cathedral. The service: The property’s concierge offers 24-hour service and a team dedicated to making each guest’s stay a unique experience by sharing special information about culture and arts programming in Mexico City. Anything left to mention? In October 2021, the hotel inaugurated a new space known as El Cubo, an art and culinary hub featuring a gallery, a concept shop, and even a cafe offering cinnamon-fried churros from Churrería San Ginés, a shop first founded in Madrid in 1894." - Michaela Trimble

Umbral, Curio Collection (Mexico City, Mexico) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The sheer scale of Mexico City’s downtown district can feel a bit forbidding, but behind the walls of a stately building just two blocks from the Zócalo is Umbral, Curio Collection by Hilton, an upscale boutique-style hotel by the venerable American hospitality brand. Inside it’s both stylish and warm, its clean lines softened by rich colors and impressive contemporary artworks. There’s an art gallery on site, as well as a vinyl library, an outdoor swimming pool, and multiple restaurants, including two by the celebrated chef Daniel Ovadía, serving creative local fare for a variety of occasions." - Tablet Hotels

Love this hotel already. Just beautiful in my opinion. Great rooms. Got upgraded. Bathroom is amazing. The soaps and shampoos are amazing Super friendly staff. Great at check in. Everyone including cleaning and maintenance staff says hello Amex platinum side note, book if you can through Amex travel for extra benefits Rooftop restaurant and pool. Pool is small but an option. Only issue right now is the construction noise next door. Like literally could not nap. I may have to drop a start by the last day but everything else holding out.

The location seems very convenient until it's not. The constant street closures are a pain, not their fault, but it does affect your stay. Rooms are clean, aesthetically pleasing but nothing else, rooms have no privacy, you can hear EVERYTHING. On our last, morning staff were moving around furniture on the top floor and instead of lifting it up, it was being dragged. It went on for about two hrs. The room we stayed had an indoor balcony that you can even access, however, very small, you can't hang out, no room for chairs or even a small table, don't be fooled by the this feature. The lighting in the room and bathroom was very minimum, if you're a gal trying to do make up, good luck. Entry and bathroom doors are TINY as we the elevators. No closet space, the designated space was shared by a coffee station and you can barely fit about 3 items. No space for extra luggage, it has to sit on an elevated stand or sit on the floor. TV is not smart, you can't watch any of your streaming services. AC, only goes down to 70 degrees but feels hot, if you leave the room it goes back to 75. The restaurant staff was a complete lack of effort. We sat down, ordered two drinks (orange juices) and food. We received our food first before our drinks. We finished eating and the drinks showed up way later. All this while another party arrived after us and received their drinks and food before us. We stayed here for 5 nights. Pros- Cleaning staff was very attentive and friendly. Beds are decent, that's about it.

Stayed here for 10 days. Only 30 mins to MEX airport. Excellent location and walkable to all the museums and art places. Walkable distance to public bus and subway. Lots of authentic street taco stands and restaurants nearby. However, traffic can be very bad for Uber during rush hour. Great location for first time visitors regardless. The staff were very friendly and spoke English perfectly. We stayed in room 203. Probably one of the more luxuroius and bigger rooms in the premise. Even though we're close to the street, it was surprisingly quiet!! It is bigger than NYC condo with extremely high ceilings. Excellent daily room service for clean towels and tidyness. Shower was nice and high pressure. King size bed was nice and firm. Overall excellent hotel, service, and location.

Our stay at Hotel Umbral for our honeymoon was perfection from start to finish. The hotel is beautiful, and every single member of the staff treated us with professionalism and warmth, making us feel truly celebrated. However, the person who completely elevated our experience to unforgettable status was Luis, on the Concierge team. We arrived with almost no concrete plans, hoping to figure things out as we went. With only a day's notice, Luis pulled off a logistical miracle. He not only planned out the most incredible, tailored honeymoon week for us, including reservations for a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the pyramids, exclusive tour, spa reservations and seamless transportation, but he did it all with genuine enthusiasm and effortless efficiency. He listened to our ideas and translated them into a curated, perfect itinerary. We have stayed at many Hiltons globally and had wonderful vacations, but Luis made us feel like family. Thanks to Luis, we spent our week experiencing the best of CDMX without ever worrying about the details. He is the platinum standard for hospitality, and his planning made our honeymoon truly relaxing and magical. We can’t recommend Hotel Umbral and especially Luis enough!

Wonderful hotel with great staff! Centrally located in the city center. Rooms are very nice and ambiance of the hotel is lovely. There’s even an art gallery off the lobby. The rooftop restaurant is a great setting for breakfast too! I’d definitely stay here again!

We had an absolutely amazing stay here. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We were given an upgrade as soon as it was available. Anything we needed the hotel staff instantly helped us with. The restaurant was very nice. The terrance pool and hot tub were enjoyable as well. We had no issues with noise. The location was perfect - right in the middle of El Centro and walking distance to the National Palace. The area seemed safe to us (it was swarming with police and national gaurds). On our last day due to road closures it was literally impossible for any ubers or taxis to get to the hotel. So the bellboy secured a private driver and literally walked us to the driver (it was 700 meters) with some of our luggage until we met the driver (who by the way got us to the airport on time). We felt like we were treated like family by everyone there. A special thank you to Eduardo and Mario.

The hotel was absolutely beautiful and smelled incredible! The location was perfect — within walking distance to so many great spots. The staff was incredibly attentive and went above and beyond during our stay. While we were there, a large march closed all the surrounding streets, and as a group of ten travelers, our transportation couldn’t reach us to get to the airport. Two hotel staff members personally walked us through the crowds and demonstrations for over five blocks — one leading the way and the other following behind to make sure we were all safe. It was an experience we could never have navigated on our own, and their kindness and dedication meant so much.

This was almost a 5 ⭐ until noise issues dragged it down to 4 ⭐. I thought it might have lowered to even 3, but for me 4 ⭐ remained fair. I was on the 4th floor, and there were frequent loud noises that lasted about 2-3 seconds, seemingly coming from above, which was the rooftop, on which there were the restaurant, the pool, and the gym. Similar to another reviewer from last two weeks, at first, I thought it was due to a large heavy piece of furniture like a table or bed being dragged across the floor. However, it happened dozens of times a day, sometimes 10 times within 30 minutes, which led me to believe it was caused by something else. It can conceivably be coming from water pipes or something similar. Because the sound reminded me of the sound I would sometimes hear when opening the water faucet after the water had been shut off: a loud noise verberates through the walls. Given that the pool was on the rooftop, maybe that was it. I was able to record a video clip of the sound, shared here and also with hotel staff over Whatsapp. This could happen as early as 6:30 in the morning, which could disrupt your sleep -- likely disrupted mine. It also happened in the afternoon, and in the evening, though was not as bad as the morning. Another noise complaint I might have is the hotel seemed to be blasting music even at 10:30 at night. Which might be fine given that most guests don't go to bed that early, but it was still strange to hear. Switching gear, the room was good for me. Yes, lighting is potentially too weak for some guests, though it was acceptable for me. The bathroom room was spacious and clean, and felt sleek -- I thought it was a strength. Bed was comfortable. Location inside the historic district was a plus in my case. Street closures thankfully didn't seem to happen when I was there -- or at least I wasn't impacted -- but there were frequent riot police presence because the city's main square, Plaza de la Constitución, a popular site for rallies and protests, was mere blocks away. I definitely had doubts about booking the hotel due to the Nov 2025 anti-government youth protests, but thankfully things were fairly quiet by the time I started my 4 night stay. The restaurant food was probably average, which was probably understandable, given that I would imagine most guests would explore the vast culinary scene around the city anyway.
