Umbral, Curio Collection by Hilton

"Why book? Located in the heart of Centro Histórico, Hotel Umbral is an ideal outpost for art-driven travelers who seek to experience Mexico City’s aesthetic delights of past and present. Set the scene: Attracting a younger 30s and 40s set, particularly LGBTQ travelers from all over the world and Mexico, Hotel Umbral is increasingly attracting an arts-focused community of travelers who are eager to explore the Centro Histórico’s many-storied sites, as well as checking out the hotel’s own cultural hub with an on-site gallery and concept shop. The backstory: Set within the renovated 19th-century Edificio España, the development company Origen Global commissioned architecture firms nomah and JSª to form the hotel while maintaining the building’s most prominent features, including the original stairway with stainless steel railings and a skylight-capped atrium with glass mosaic flooring. The rooms: Of the hotel’s 59 guest rooms, 12 are suites that come equipped with plush sofas and vinyl record players for guests to enjoy during their stay. Each room also features artwork sourced from some of Mexico’s most interesting creatives, such as David Troice, Andrea Bores, and Disciplina Studio. Food and drink: The hotel is host to five dining options, including the upscale terrace restaurant Paxia and the more relaxed Oliva, both serving contemporary Mexican dishes with Jewish influences by chef Daniel Ovadía. The spa: While the property doesn’t have an in-house spa, it does have a partnership with SCAPE to offer in-room treatments such as deep tissue massages and exfoliating facials. The neighborhood/area: The property is set in the bustling Centro Histórico neighborhood of Mexico City near the Zócalo, the largest plaza in Latin America. Guests will be within easy walking distance of some of the city’s most historic sites, including the Templo Mayor, an important site of the ancient Aztec empire that’s now a museum, as well as Spanish-colonial structures like the National Palace and Metropolitan Cathedral. The service: The property’s concierge offers 24-hour service and a team dedicated to making each guest’s stay a unique experience by sharing special information about culture and arts programming in Mexico City. Anything left to mention? In October 2021, the hotel inaugurated a new space known as El Cubo, an art and culinary hub featuring a gallery, a concept shop, and even a cafe offering cinnamon-fried churros from Churrería San Ginés, a shop first founded in Madrid in 1894." - Michaela Trimble

Everything is very comfortable, clean and nice modern design. We also enjoyed the pool area. The staff is very helpful. Mostly American and Canadian tourist stay here so it's easy to communicate in English. The hotel cafe is Ojo de Agua which is next to the lobby, very convenient with a fresh organic menu. The location is easy central location in the historic district by the Zócalo. The hotel always has someone watching the entrance for security and it was very safe. No problems at all during our stay. This was my second visit, I has also stayed 4 nights a few weeks ago. I will definitely return again.

We stayed in one of the garden view rooms. Its not really a garden, the view is to the hallway. The rooms are pretty minimilast. Its a short walking distance to the town center, not too much car traffic on main street. We also received complimentary breakfast from the restaurant next door, it included coffee, orange juice, fruit, and an option from the menu. The rooftop is nice, didn't get a chance to get into the pool but there are lounging chairs and a bar.

Great stay. Clean hotel with cute cafe and bar connected to it. Located in the hustle and bustle or the historic district so we did need to uber over to other neighborhoods to explore but that was super easy. Everyone was very helpful and friendly. Rooms were spacious too.

We loved our stay at the Umbral Hilton in Mexico City. Luis, in particular, made our experience exceptional—always checking in and making sure we were well taken care of. The location is fantastic, and the rooms are upscale, spacious, and very comfortable. We would definitely return to stay here for our next trip to CDMX. Our only disappointment was that the rooftop restaurant was closed during our visit, but everything else exceeded expectations.

We had a wonderful stay at Umbral Hotel. The rooms were spacious, beautifully designed, and very comfortable. The hotel just a short walking distance to Centro Histórico. The service was excellent, especially from Manuel and Luis, who were incredibly kind and helpful. Luis gave us fantastic local recommendations that really enhanced our experience in Mexico City. We truly appreciated their hospitality!

I was looking forward to staying at Umbral for a week following our week in Puerto Vallarta. The hotel is such a beauty! It’s not a standard American Hilton and its unique design impressed us very much. It actually made some headlines in the interior design world back in 2020 when it first opened. No it was never a prison lol, it used to be an office building which has been convernted in a hotel. The colours, accessories, quality of materials used and the preserved heritage are phenomenal. We spent a lot of time just exploring the hotel (there’s a nice bar by the rooftop pool, historical elevators are amazing and the stairs are just a pure beauty, not to mention an art gallery and a wonderful breakfast place on the ground level). There were hotel staff present at the entrance when we arrived (we didn’t need help with our luggage but it was a nice touch to be greeted upon arrival), and Ingrid and everyone at the hotel did a wonderful job in making us feel welcome here. It’s not my first time in CDMX so I knew where to go and what to do, and everywhere we went we were safe. We took metro which was an excellent way to explore Coyoacan, San Angel, Polanco, Chapultepec and Reforma. There was a manifestation in the Zocalo and surrounding streets but it’s unpredictable so we were fine in navigating those streets and still enjoying Centro Historico. Safe deposit box was working fine (I read the other reviews and one of them mentioned safe not working and showing an error message, it’s quite common in all the hotels so you only need to ask a technician to change the battery or do a reset). We had an AC not cooling the air as we’d like it to be but it only took 3 minutes for the technician to arrive so please if you have any issues or concerns with the equipment , do call the front desk and you’ll be fine without waiting for hours). We were on the second floor facing the street and the noise suppression was quite good. Being in a center or such a big city there’s always a noise but our room did provide a good level of soundproofing so no issues here at all. Housekeeping was good as well, we were always getting water and fresh towels and the room felt clean after a long day of walking in the city. Again, we personally loved the design and style, and there are rooms with the interior view so read the description well before booking your stay or give a call and discuss your options. We’d definitely stay here again and than you to all for making our stay a lovely one!

We stayed here while visiting CDMX for a wedding. We were there a total of 4 nights and did not run into a single issue. The staff were all super friendly and helpful. The inside of the hotel looks like it could be in a museum, truly stunning! We were in awe at the architecture both inside and outside of our room. The room itself was spacious and squeaky clean. The bathroom is huge and the shower has the hottest water that comes out instantly. We were also able to help ourselves to drinks and food in the lobby when entering/exiting the hotel - there were some goodies including local beers and nuts. One small downside we experienced was the AC in the room, it never got as cold as we had set it to (not sure if this was a user error or what). Overall, we’d definitely stay here again!
