In A Nutshell: -Umi Hachikyo is a really fun restaurant to eat at. -I enjoyed the salmon roe pour overed a bowl of rice. -When this happens they will yell おいさあおいさ。(Hey! Hey! Hey!) until enough salmon roe is poured over your rice. -The food is really delicious. -The Hokkaido Karaage Chicken was good, but I don't recommend it. -The scallop was very big & the juices were very tasty. Overall, don't forget to enjoy some Classic Sapporo Beer & cold Hokkaido Sake.

Izakaya famous for their overflowing salmon roe with rice (ikura-don). No fishiness of the roe at all and their grilled mackerel was great too. Good atmosphere, as there is a performative component to the service of the roe. The staff will chant with each spoonful of ikura placed over the rice, served tableside.

We decided to pop by when they first opened at 6pm, testing our luck as we didn’t make a reservation. Luckily, there was a spare table by the bar which they offered us. I had a small bowl of salmon roe and salmon-sashimi, while my partner had the medium salmon roe bowl. The portions were huge and they were super generous with the salmon roe. It was such a fun experience and we felt so welcomed by all the staff. The seafood was fresh and so delicious, we will definitely be recommending this spot to family and friends.

Great atmosphere and service and the ceremony around the salmon roe was good fun. The other things on the menu were also tasty (and especially the buttered corn). We turned up at 6 one day, couldnt get a table but they helped us book for the following day. Definitely worth the return - a memorable dinner

The restaurant is popular, very atmospheric, staff are friendly, even we don't know Japanese, they look for translations for us to explain the menu and place orders. The most famous is the salmon roe rice, it served in 3 sizes - small, medium or large. We went for the medium to share each other. It’s impressive when serving, the staff makes a loud announcement then begin to ladle fresh salmon roe onto our bowl of rice. Each salmon roe is full and big, we are watching the salmon roe sliding down from the white rice, visual and taste are satisfied, the other foods are delicious, the price is reasonable but not particularly cheap. Better make reservation or you may not get a seat.

Best place for salmon roe, not sure what they do but it tastes better than anywhere else I tried it. The grilled fish was fantastic. Would def recommend to try if you are ever in the area. The potato side was great too. Need to book in advance during Sapporo snow festival. Basically anything you order you won’t be disappointed. Thx for a fantastic experience. Skip dessert and go somewhere else. Not bad just not like their meal. Same as family mart ice cream.

Amazing food and service! Staff were very accommodating and knew a fair bit of English which was super helpful. The English menu lacks a few items on the Japanese menu as some are only handwritten in Japanese so it's good to have both. We got the set which cost 4000 per person. A bit on the pricy side for the area but it was super filling and tasty! The staff also serve a dish with overpiling salmon roe and the chef staff do a little cheer when serving it which was a great experience, also in the set. Had a great time overall and would recommend!

Yelp
Really delicious kaisendon restaurant in Sapporo. Reservations are necessary because they fill Up fast even on weekends. There is a cover charge and you just order one drink per person which is pretty typical. They had very limited non alcoholic drink options which is also common and they were out of water so I ordered tea. Also you must order an appropriate size because you will be charged if you leave any seafood. Unfortunately the amount of ikura being harvested each year and fish in general is shrinking due to ocean pollution. The food was phenomenal and when they come out and bring the ikura out to pour into your bowl it's a lot of fun and they make it so fun. The chefs were very accommodating and took concern for allergies which is not always the case in Japan. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Location: Susukino area of Sapporo, the red light district. Super hip area, with a Ferris wheel nearby, bowling alley and lots of karaoke. This place is located in a TM24 building on the second(?) floor, so do your google map navigation and look for the sign on the building in the google map picture. Excellent staff, enthusiastic welcome and OISA! when dishing out the ikura. I don't even eat ikura but you gotta watch them, it's soooo crazy! We had a "special" kaiseki dinner here with our JTB tour, there were about 16 of us in a private tatami room and the dishes kept on coming, including a hairy crab. (Me personally, I like king crab, hairy crab takes too much work to find edible pieces). Honestly I don't even remember what else we ate, but there were lots of dishes. If you are an adventurous eater and like to live off the land and sea in Sapporo, this is the place for you.

Yelp
Went here when we wanted to drink and have a light meal during winter. We were fortunate enough to not have to line up for this as well and were seated immediately. As standard, it was a one drink minimum (which we covered easily) and one entrée each. We got the squid - which was served cold I guess - ok but maybe I wasn't used to it. We all know why you're here - it's the Ikura bowl. I would say get at least the medium and enjoy the show. They come up to you later on and pile the ikura on your rice over and over until it overflows. Overall I would think it's regular Izakaya prices, maybe slightly higher, but it's still worth going and having.

Yelp
During my most recent trip to Hokkaido, we had the pleasure of having dinner at Hachikyou. It was our last dinner in Hokkaido on our trip and it was a great way to end our vacation. We were seated tatami style at two adjoining tables for our party of 10. The atmosphere was lively and there was a certain buzz in the air. The other customers inside all appeared to be enjoying themselves, so I was anxious to see what the night would hold. We started our meal with a some hot sake. Next up was the cold ramen salad, which was a nice start to our meal. The cold ramen mixed with the lettuce was a nice blend. Sashimi came next and it was so refreshing and fresh. Hokkaido Chicken Karaage was tender and flavorful. Kani Miso was very fresh and the miso added a nice touch to it. Then we enjoyed Grilled Hokke, Kani Sashimi, another Sashimi dish that included Duck, Red Herring and Flounder. Next up was Croquette, miso soup and our bowl of Ikura. All the dishes were delicious and even though we were sharing, I was quite full. The ultimate was the Ikura bowl. I have never seen or eaten a bowl of Ikura that had that much Ikura. The presentation was amazing, as the chef came-out with a bowl of rice. He had a large bowl of Ikura inside and proceeded to count the number of scoops as he poured 5 scoops of Ikura on top of the rice. Forget the show they put-on. This had to be the freshest and most amazing Ikura I've ever tasted. Lastly, we enjoyed cold sake as well. They had a small coaster under your sake glass as they proceeded to fill it till the glass overflowed. It made for a large sake shot, but I wasn't complaining. The staff were super friendly and the food was very tasty and delicious. What an amazing meal and experience.

Yelp
If you ever find yourself in Sapporo and want a fun meal stop by! We ended up here through the tour we were on (JTB) with a party of 30. Awesome food, a fun atmosphere and we had the "all you can drink" option left us full and happy. Be sure to order the Ikura and watch them pile it on until you tell them to stop!

Yelp
Where do I start? This place is a real gem. Legend has it that the owner of the place sends all his chefs to join the fishermen who provides the seafood for the restaurant. This is to allow the chefs to truly understand and appreciate the process and with that it might bring more meaning and purpose to the way they prepare the food in the restaurant. And boy did that work. The food in this place is world class, despite the humble appearance of the restaurant. The Ikura Don is a must have, if anything just to witness the ritual as they serve you the dish. It's pretty friggin epic. Not to mention how generous they are with the roe. Staff were attentive and very helpful, always explaining to me how each dish should be eaten and with the right accompanying condiments. And oh, Sapporo draft beer of course. It DOES taste different from the ones you get outside of Japan. Legit. Go. For the roe. You'll be bowled.
