Umlani is one of a few places I work in sub-Saharan Africa and it is also one of those incredible places that gets under your skin in the best possible way. From the moment you arrive, there's an unmistakable vibe. It's relaxed, genuine, and utterly welcoming. It’s not just another luxury lodge chasing polish and perfection; it’s something far more meaningful. Umlani always feels very special, tucked deep in the wild of Timbavati, surrounded by nature, and run by people who care.||The setting is magical. Tucked under shady trees and blending seamlessly into the Timbavati wilderness, the camp has an effortless charm. The traditional rondavel style thatched lodges are simple yet incredibly comfortable, with everything you need. There’s no pretence here and nor is it needed, just authenticity, warmth, and the incredible sounds of the bush around you.||The team at Umlani are truly special. Friendly, kind, and full of stories, they make you feel part of something. It’s the kind of place where strangers become friends over coffee or a beer or gin and tonic by the fire, chatting, laughing and enthusing about their game drives.||And then there’s the wildlife. Umlani delivers phenomenal sightings. Big cats, wild dogs, elephants, rhino, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and amazing birdlife. The guides and trackers are top-notch, combining sharp skills with a deep love for the bush. Drives are always exciting, always immersive, absolutely unforgettable.||If you’re after a lodge with marble floors, a pillow menu and other veneer thin rubbish, Umlani might not be for you. But if you want heart, soul, comfort, adventure, and the kind of bush experience that will stay with you long after you leave – this is it! And it's why I return with groups of photographers, time after time and will continue to do so.
