💎 Fascinating Look into Opal Mining History This museum offers a well-curated glimpse into the rich opal mining heritage of the region. Modern, clean, and thoughtfully presented, it’s a great stop for anyone curious about Coober Pedy’s famous gemstone. Has tours, but need to book in advance. In addition to informative displays, there’s a selection of souvenirs and opal products available for purchase—perfect for taking a piece of the experience home with you.

This is a Must-visit attraction in Coober Pedy. Everything you need to know about Opals is here in this beautiful museum cum opal jewellery store. The entrance to the venue is free. There are guided tours with informative movies which operate 2-3 times daily and need booking. There's a huge amount of rich history of opal mining, works of traditional arts, paintings, depictions of cultural heritages and so on... exhibited everywhere you look, from showcases to all the walls of this underground museum. There's a jewellery shop located within, which sells varieties of opal jewelleries, paintings & souvenirs, etc. Incidentally, there's also a coffee machine located inside the jewellery store area, where you can grab a quick coffee/tea while looking around. But there ain't any toilets/wash rooms inside this venue. So when you arrive here, make sure you are not in a Rush! Thankfully, there are a few emergency exits though 🤣

Such a great low cost tour with a bonus movie to start with, and no pressure to buy anything! The young lady, maybe from Germany was our guide and was so good, clear, knowledgeable and fun. Great job! There was so much to see along with the mine, the museum, show cases and dugouts, both pioneer and modern. Very good tour, recommended

A great and free museum with lots of history of the region and displays of their plesiosaurs and other prehistoric creatures that have been discovered around Coober Pedy.

One of the most interesting places I've visited. Fascinating history, information and environment. Free!! Genuine history of region and Australia. Grumpy old bloke instructing not to take photos of t- towels - get a sign! Plenty of parking, a really great experience.

What a great find! Or, more precisely, recommendation - thanks, Shady 😊. It's informative and free and showcases so much more than the usual opal mining. Of course, there are also opals on sale, and one can pay for an underground tour - neither of which I did. However, I also loved the well cared for Sturt's Desert Pea - South Australia 's floral emblem - which lines the path to the museum entrance 😀.

Big shame they don't allow well behaved dogs inside and the only shaded spot that people could sit in while tag teaming ,is reserved for bus and tour groups. So whilst the venue is great my rating is only 3 because of the lack of shade over the area that non tour people can sit on. Do better for people travelling with animals.

Pretty cheap for a fun time with the family. Our guide, Katrina was lovely and educated us on the history of the opal mines. Clean and spacious environment and free coffee and tea at the end of the tour. 10/10 definitely recommend 👍
