On the Grid : Uncle Nick’s

"Uncle Nick’s has been our go to Greek spot for those days that we’re all super hungry and jonesing to reek of garlic and hummus. It’s a no-nonsense Greek restaurant with great food and plenty of room. It’s as good as you’re going to get outside of Astoria ;)" - Anti/Anti

I had the gyro, it was warm flavorful and had tons of onion. They were crisp, mild, and sweet though so surprisingly nice. Friendly guy at the counter and it was quick out even though they had a line. The building needs a little "coat of paint" so to speak, but we love local. 🤣Would fo back again

Google
I absolutely slept on uncle nicks and I don’t know why. After making my first visit just I month ago I’ve been multiple times to both here and there other location. I absolutely fell in love with the meatball sub! I will definitely be bringing more friends here. It’s an interesting set up and is the closest I feel to a drive in still around. You go inside make your order with the nice gentleman at the counter and they bring it to your car. Such a cool experience and cool atmosphere being in downtown Rockford.

Google
Uncle Nick's has Always been a favorite of Mine for places to eat in the Rockford area ........ Always filling and Big Portions, Absolutely Fresh and Definitely Delicious. The parking can get crazy sometimes and at times there's a line but definitely worth the wait for the food......and you can Always call ahead and order so you don't have to wait. Super Nice people with great service. Highly recommended

Colleen Quinn

Google
Love this staple on the West side 💙 and check out their new menu board inside... Super cool and professional... Looks really sharp guys! Please make some Uncle Nick's t-shirts available. :)

Google
Used to be really good but lately not so much. Italian beef is dry and not enough meat. Tacos are good but they'll give you a plain one if you don't specify which saying you want everything should be pretty damn clear. Been going there for 2 and a half years but my business is lost for them

Google
Uncle Nick's Gyros lives up to its reputation as the go-to spot for mouthwatering gyros in town. The recommendation from a long-time local was spot on, as the gyro burger I ordered was simply delicious, staying true to its promise. If you're in the mood for a satisfying gyro experience, look no further than Uncle Nick's! The place is a walk up only. No dinning room. U simply order and go wait in your car. They bring you your meal to the car. Urfavorite_realtor

Неу, Most days I'm satisfied grabbing fruits after a hike, but on treat yourself day, I want onion rings. Spotted Uncle Nick's and decided to give them a try. All I can say is ...... you're not going to find these in your 🥱 state. My hot list: Onion Rings w/Ketchup

Google
Absolutely the best Gyros around! Keep up the good work. Ordered the mushrooms and those were delicious! 🤤 love the old school feel of the restaurant.

Yelp
Long time local client. Their food always satisfies and mistakes happen (although rare). If they happen to miss something on your order they will make it right!
google avatar

Mitch J.

Yelp
Still the local GOAT of gyros. Can't beat the value too. Employees have actually been very nice the last few years so I'm impressed at the intentionality behind the increased customer service. Will always be a staple as a taste of Rockford.

Yelp
When the late night hunger hits get your fix at uncle Nicks! Could possibly be the largest slice of baklava I've ever seen, and I'm not complaining. It was very tasty as well. No complaints here. Great fires and great mozz sticks on the drive home. Rockford staple.
google avatar

Jake S.

Yelp
Italian beef was a solid 7.5/10, gyro was lacking the greasiness that I expected but was still good overall. The saganaki didn't look like anything special but was absolutely delicious and exceeded my expectations.
google avatar

Yelp
Good was amazing! Super quick and the young kid workin the counter was fantastic Homemade Baklava!! Need i say more????

Yelp
Came here late one night after being out with some friends. I was told this is all part of the Rockford experience and it did not disappoint. There were a lot of cars waiting for their food when we got there, but the wait was not very long. I ordered chicken nuggets, a gyro sandwich, jalapeño poppers and some fries which I shared with my sister and one other girl - those didn't last. Portions are good, I actually tried to save the second half of my gyro sandwich but one of the guys found it and finished it! Anyway, this is probably one of the better places I've been to in Rockford.

Jayce M.

Yelp
The food was delicious and fresh, The customer service was excellent as he brought the food out to my car for me, it gives you an old school type of setting that feels refreshing to the eyes! I ran in for a refill and he greeted me kindly and seemed excited about it! Overall great experience and I will be back! PS. The mozzarella sticks might be the best I've ever had!!!!

Polly H.

Yelp
The best gyros around!! Great fries. Friendly people. Also great Italian beef and combo Italian sausage/Italian beef sandwiches.

David B.

Yelp
My last visit was disappointing with too many onions and the meat and cucumber sauce were not as good as in the past. The fries were warm and not as salty as before. I think it was better when they offered fewer items to choose from.
google avatar

Bruce B.

Yelp
Very disappointed, the gyros gotten smaller, they have less meat than before. What's up? It wouldn't take much to make it a decent gyro, just a few extra slices, overall weight 7.0 ounces. Just the Pita 3.2 ounces. Will not return or recommend.

Dan J.

Yelp
After 35 years of eating here I am officially done Gyro from nicks used to be the best Now half the meat and twice the sauce It's no longer any good By the way fire the guy with the squirt bottle for sauce and send him to subway

Jonathan B.

Yelp
Amazing food! The building was so cool and gave me Chicago vibes! The owner was very welcoming and kind. I 100% recommend this place

Yelp
Uncle Nick's is one of the Jewels in The Crown of Rockford Illinois; if you have not been there there is a hole in your downtown experience. They are highly professional, their food is really tasty at 2:59 AM as well as at noon. Take out only, fast service, it's a must go if you have never been.
google avatar

Yelp
I became violently ill after eating there after Stroll on state. Worst food poisoning of my life. Good news is that I lost 5 pounds.
google avatar

Misty S.

Yelp
The gyro with extra Mozzarella cheese for $6.17 is pretty good. The meat is tender and savory. I'm more about the pizza puff, which only cost $2.49. Mine was a little overcooked when I got it, but it tasted ok. Other items on the menu includes: Italian beef, meatball sandwich, burgers, hot dogs, chicken pita wrap, chicken tenders, hot wings, Philly cheese steak, fish sandwich, and Greek salad to name a few. There is no indoor seating but they had tables with umbrella outside. ....| \ _ , , , - - , , _ , .../ , ` . - ' ` ' . _ \ - ; ; ; , _ ..| , a - ) ) _ . ; . Yelp
I'm sure Uncle Nick's is good during the day but after a night of running around the handful of bars in Rockford this is a place that you must stop at for food. It looks super sketchy outside but those places tend to have the best food. We went in early July and even though my boyfriend and I were ordering together only one of us was allowed in the building at a time. We ordered the Philly Cheesesteak, a burger, and fries. The Philly was delish. It was so flavorful and juicy. My boyfriend said the same about the burger. I don't know what kind of magic they use on the fries but those bad boys mad it the 15 minutes to the hotel and they were still too hot to eat.

Paul J.

Yelp
Ordered 2 gyros and 2 fries.some how they couldn't get it right.got a burnt up polish with some kind of soggy sugar coated sweet potato fries.and one gyro.

John B.

Yelp
Order a salad and got a tree in a bowl with the ingredients not even cut. Basically ordered a make your own salad.

Yelp
Uncle Nick's is THE place for late-night food in Downtown Rockford. Whether you are in town for a concert or just cruising around, hoping to find something open, this is it. The restaurant is carry-out only and its ordering area is quite small, so prepare to be in close proximity with other customers. Weeknights are usually busy, so try looking at the menu before you approach the counter. (the cashier seems nicer the quicker you are) I always get the gyro. They are sometimes generous with the tzatziki, but I can always remove as much as I want. It rivals Pete's Tom & Jerry's (Rockford) gyros, but nothing can beat eating this messy food after midnight.

Armand H.

Yelp
Hands down the best! Better than any drive through with a damn window that's for sure. Literally anything you order there is a hit! And fast too!!
google avatar

Gordy C.

Yelp
Unfortunately, they've forgotten my hot sauce the last two times......still fantastic.

Loretta J.

Yelp
I'm never disappointed with Uncle Nick's their food is always so amazing and their prices are very reasonable! I absolutely love me some Uncle Nick's! Thank You for being consistently great you've got a loyal customer for life!!

Yelp
This has been an after hours staple of mine for years. Go in, get a gyro combo, go home and enjoy. They used to be the best for a good gyro, but anymore their quality is sliding. I'm not sure if it's the staff or owner, or what. Speaking of the staff... WOW. I was in there last night and the guys behind the counter where rude, slow, and to be honest, it seemed like they couldn't care less about serving me. They where too busy speaking on their cell phones. Which would be a problem in of itself, but just because I may not look hispanic, doesn't mean I don't speak spanish and I know exactly what you where saying about the customers in there! The place is small and cramped, get in move to the left, and slowing work your way to the right, and hope you don't get squashed by the drunk crowd.

Andrea E.

Yelp
So I was in and ordered 2 gyros no onions, side of gyro sauce, 2 fries and a cheeseburger. Your staff gave me ranch dressing not tzatziki sauce. The ranch was poured on one of the gyros by my 7 yr old before I saw you gave us the wrong sauce. Called the restaurant and they said I can get a new sauce. Not acceptable this was your error. Ranch dressing is not good on gyros. Do better!

Yelp
I've gone there many times over the years. I started when it was the only late night eatery in town, other than drive throughs and Denny's. I loved their food. Unfortunately, the last 3 times we've gone there, we've been EXTREMELY disappointed. The burgers have all been way overcooked. They're so well done and dry, we could hardly swallow them. A beef and sausage sandwich (a long time favorite of mine) was so bad, I had to throw out the overcooked, sausage and eat the italian beef by itself. At least the fries were good. It's sad that after being a regular since the 80's, I'll never go there again.
google avatar

Maria R.

Yelp
I freaking love this place. Amazing Gyros. Amazing burgers. Pizza puff. Spinach and cheese pie. Mozz sticks. I could go on and on. Always warm greetings and very welcoming. I'm never disappointed with their food.
google avatar

Yelp
Uncle Nick's is a carry-out only Chicago style fast food place. They specialize in gyros, burgers, hotdogs, sausages, and Italian beef, but the gyros are generally what they are known for. You can also get there food at the Oasis micropub right across the street. You can order in the bar, and they will deliver it to your table. The food is a fair price, and the portions are reasonable. If you are looking for the most-known Uncle Nick's experience, go just after bar close, and wait in the line for a gyro (order your sauce on the side to avoid it from getting too soggy), a bag of fries, and a baklava for your dessert. It's not exactly a place you would think of for a family dinner, but every once in awhile, it hits the spot.

Yelp
I had my first gyro here in 1988 and it was love at first bite. Every time I'm in Rockford, I make a point to get a gyro from Uncle Nick's, but this past August might be the last time. The establishment is filthy beyond belief, and that alone almost kept me from ordering. But nostalgia beat common sense in this case. We took our order to go, so it definitely wasn't fresh upon arrival at home, but I'm pretty sure eating it freshly made would not have changed my opinion much. The gyro was thrown together sloppily and devoid of any tomatoes. The tzatziki was flavorful, but there was not enough to give this "sandwich" any unctuousness to speak of. My brother ordered the cheesesteak and said it was pretty good, but he didn't sound very convincing. Sorry, Uncle Nick's. I'll still always keep a place for you in my heart!
google avatar

Yelp
Oh Uncle Nicks! The stories I have heard, the times I've had, I won't stop coming...though I should. This heart-attack-city has delicious gyros and french fries, but at 1 or 2am, I usually crave hot dogs, mozz sticks, and fried mushrooms; all three being excellent. The medium drinks are decent, sized to match the meal. But when I wake up the next morning and see the remains of an Uncle Nicks massacre on my coffee table, I say a prayer for my thighs and arteries and hope I make a better decision next time. *No seating inside. Open late, oh so late.*
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
I wouldn't recommend getting the Italian beef here. They put so little meat in it that it looked like someone else ate some before I got to it. The bread is so big in comparison. I can also tell the beef is not made in house. It's rubbery as well. I don't normally go to this location. I would highly recommend the Gryos and the pizza puffs. I also really love their baklava but I can't say that I would eat much else there.

Joshua T.

Yelp
If you use a debit card, BEWARE...2 members of my family were overcharged 20$ and another 60$ but the receipt given said the amount that was supposed to be charged. Only found out when they looked at their bank app. Money was refunded but I have a hard time believing this was just a mistake.
google avatar

Willie H.

Yelp
Always a reliable favorite when it comes to late night comfort food. The gyros and gyro cheeseburger are some of their best sellers. The hot wings are delicious, the chilli dogs are always great and filling. The shrimp baskets are perfect after a night of partying and they're open until 3am and most holidays. You can't go wrong with uncle nicks.

Yelp
We were in town for the Alton Brown show at the Coronado Theatre. It was during the show that Alton made mention of an amazing Gyro that he had eaten here. After have a miserable dinner at Capri my beautiful girlfriend and I decided today venture over and experience the aforementioned establishment. First was "um Okay," It was literally a walk in and order diner especially set for take out. There is room for maybe 3-4 adults. Dare I call this place a shack??? It would certainly fit the criteria for Guy Feri's Diners, Drive in & Dives. Did I mention Dive. Well not letting the this getting me down, we placed an order hoping Alton Brown wasn't wrong. We ordered a Gyro and a Loaded Hotdog and hit the road back to Chicago. Let just say I have had better. The Gyro was just meat, Onions and sauce. Decent flavor but definitely missing something. The hotdog was the same way. Loaded includes Ketchup just in case you are a mustard only hotdog enthusiast. The large drink was quite satisfying as it made the entire trip back to Chicago. We will more than likely divert from further visits.

Yelp
I used to work security at several establishments in the 80's and 90;s and the food was great...Now the Help is VERY VERY Rude, food order is usually wrong, skimpy on meat,Gyro;s taste different now,my $8 philly cheese steak had a nacho type liquid cheese on it that made me sick for 2 days. When you have a Complaint the employees wont give you the owners phone #,instead the guy Yelled at me aggressively, threw the bag at me ,i just ordered $30 in food,What the Hell ! I wont ever go back !You Guys just lost a 30 year customer..

Lynn D.

Yelp
I've been getting food from Uncle Nick's since 1987. Almost always gyros but sometimes with a burger, other menu items. This is the first time I've been disappointed in our gyros. So sparse I had to ask, "Where's the meat?!" So disappointed but I'll go back because I love them and hoping this was an awful fluke.

Jean B.

Yelp
They used to be the place to go to but now. High priced and not enough food. Italian Beef had a mouth full of meat. And about ten Carrots and celery for peppers. NEVER AGAIN!

Jefree L.

Yelp
The late night service was phenomenal !! I was in and out in a flash . The food arrived steaming hot and fresh within minutes which was very appreciated .

Yelp
A Rockford staple. I grew up getting Gyros with my mom here. High quality food for a great price!

Yelp
Having Uncle Nick's ranked the highest restaurant on Yelp for Rockford actually serves two dual purposes. Not only does it sum up Rockford's fine dining selection but it actually speaks volumes for culture that is Rockford as a whole. Nothing says fine dining like a greasy gyro pit that has to actually have security patrolling the parking lot after dark to keep the violence at a minimal. For the longest time I thought that Uncle Nick's wrapped their food in clear wax paper and used wax paper bags. Then I realized that the bags and wrapping weren't supposed to be see through, but instead the grease would simply eat through the wrapping paper and bag and leave the packaging translucent. Judging by the fact that Rockfordians have rated this place #1 in Rockford, I wouldn't be surprised to see me flamed for this review. However if you doubt that this place is a real hole in the wall, just read through some of the other reviews found here. The majority of the people that rant and rave about this place usually preface their review by informing you just how drunk they were before stopping at Uncle Nick's. The fact that this food only seems to be truly great after 2 in the morning and when intoxicated speaks volumes.
google avatar

Mike O.

Yelp
No, sorry. Best gyros in Rockford? I think not. The gyros I've had here are without exception subpar. Meat is overdone, sauce is thin, and they never get an order right (I said NO tomatoes!) Go to Tom and Jerry's. You might have to pay a bit more, but you don't have to be drunk to enjoy their food.
google avatar

Melissa N.

Yelp
Uncle Nick is definately not making the food anymore and whoever bought the place isn't following his recipes. This USED to be the best gyro in Rockford but the last time I was there it was terrible. Wont make the drive to that side of Rockford for the gyro anymore. :(

Chris S.

Yelp
THIS IS A REVIEW FOR THE UNCLE NICK'S ON THE EAST SIDE.....not down town. Hands down, the best gyro that I have ever had. Best sauce, great pita and the best meat. I can't say enough about how good it is. I will not eat a Gyro any where else any more. I never tried any of the other stuff on the menu, except a puff one day, and it was typical. The one down town.... not as good, in my opinion. The staff is not as friendly, and oh yeah, ware your vest and keep you hand on your 9mm, it is a bad part of town. But the east side location is awesome!
google avatar

Marybeth B.

Yelp
If you eat one meal in Rockford it should be a gyro from Uncle Nick's - the original location if possible! There's nowhere to sit and some people may think it's in a questionable part of town but none of this matters. This is place to go for the most amazing gyro of your life. Seriously.
google avatar

Jon F.

Yelp
Gyro with cheese, double time, hands down gyro winner. EVER I'm not gonna lie about there not being any inside seating. I also saw a used hypodermic needle in the parking lot while parking to enjoy some deliciousness. You may also find that if you leave the bag in your car overnight it will reek of awesome gyro for weeks to come... all said it is SO worth it!
google avatar

Shaylie P.

Yelp
This place has the best chicken wings in Rockford in my opinion, I've been coming here since I was little, and I've always loved their cheese fries. The staff is always super nice and polite. It's pretty quick food too, if you don't catch them on a busy day. They get pretty busy at night but it's worth the wait, the food is so good.
google avatar

Lindsey G.

Yelp
Gyros are good but I prefer getting fresh meat, gyro sauce, and pitas from valli and making my own. I know lamb meat is expensive but it was like $20 for meals for two of us. That is a lot more than I want to pay for fast food.
google avatar

Franklin S.

Yelp
Uncle Nicks,........what can you say about a place where your food comes out of a hole in the wall? the complete mistery that surrounds how your food is made i think makes it taste so much better! Their burgers are nothing to brag about and thats why this place isnt "Uncle Nicks Burger" its "Uncle Nicks Gyros"! You go there for the gyros and gyros only......and well their delicious salty fries, all this food sits like a brick but its a delicious brick that will help you digest all the alcohol you have ingested in the hours previous to this. Thankfully this place is open late.....really late, one time we stopped there on a cab at almost 4AM and it was still open, this place is a must stop on the way back from the bars but make sure you hold the onions if youre bringing company back to your place! Equally good are their saganaki and sweet baklava!
google avatar

Susie S.

Yelp
I'm a native of the Rock Vegas area, so I've been going to Uncle Nick's since I was old enough to have a fake I.D. Why is this important you ask? Well, the gyro's here are the bestest in the Midwest when it comes to 'drunk food.' If you're feeling frisky, order a pizza puff and make that hangover bloat extra special. If you go after the bars close, be prepared to stand in line (the original location downtown with the mysterious hand tossing out your order through the wall) or wait a while in your car (the newer location on N. State). But it's well worth it. Hands down one of the best gyro's I've ever had.
google avatar

Alicia W.

Yelp
I absolutely love Uncle Nick's. I don't eat it very often because its not the best food for you but when I do indulge I love it. The gyros are great. I also like the fried mushrooms and love the jalepeno poppers. I always go to the older one downtown. If you go after the bars close be prepared to wait in line a lil bit with some interesting characters. It's in a lil bit of a shady area but across the street there is a building that cops are always sitting in so nothing is going to happen there. Once my friend got some food and was going to sit and eat in his car in the parking lot and a cop came over and told him he had to leave. Kinda weird.
