Hope Y.
Yelp
I held off on this review because of a visit in September, and had hoped that was a one-off, unfortunately it wasn't. Learned a few things on this visit, and while the service was on point, as it always is, the food quality was less than expected and for the cost of some of the items, there was some loss of stars. If Yelp did half stars, I'd give it a 2.5.
We arrived for a celebratory early meal and as soon as I sat down, I called our server over and asked her, "Sis, did you guys resolve the bacon issue?" in my most serious voice of concern. She immediately understood what I was referring to and replied, "No, sis. it's still the same, we have new owners and so some of the menu items have changed. You can order extra bacon if you want, I can check how much that might cost." I reluctantly agreed to see how much that might be.
Others in our party asked about the fish tacos, and were informed that the sauces were slightly different, but the rest of the plate was still relatively the same. They both ordered the fish tacos. We also learned the new owners took over in September, (which was when we last ate at Uncles, which is when I had hoped it was just a glich and I didn't want to give a meh review for that visit that was out of the ordinary)
We started with some drinks and the poke tower which no longer has sushi rice, and patiently waited for our meals to arrive. I got the bacon crab and avocado sandwich with extra bacon and my meal partners ordered the fish tacos.
I'd like to invite you, gentle reader, to peruse the picture section to see what the Bacon Crab and Avocado Sandwiches used to look like, prior to September 2024. Those piggies were healthy, thick cuts of bacon. I'd also like you to take a look at the older pictures of the fish tacos, there used to be 3 tacos and alas, there are only 2. I do not know when the tacos went from 3 to 2, but the bacon was around September. (insert really sad face)
When the food came out, some of the bacon was hanging out of my sando, so I took a little bite of it, and it caught me off guard because it was sweet. Like maple bacon. So I had my seat mate take a bite, just in case I was imagining it, and I wasn't, it was sweet. My meal partners were pleased with the tacos, noting that the new sauces were not too different, but they did notice that there was only 2 tacos when there used to be 3.
A plate was ordered to go, and it was a special Opakapaka plate ordered on a separate tab. When the two bills came, one bill was paid via debit card and had no additional charges, but the second take out plate had an additional 2.5% charge on it for a credit card fee and the special plate was $68 (which seemed a tad overpriced for a piece of fish, one scoop of rice and some asparagus...yes it was a large piece of fish, but not nearly a price tag of $68 imho).
Apparently if you pay with a debit card, no additional charges, but with a credit card expect to pay an additional 2.5% in fees.
Service is always on point here, I do hope they figure out how to keep with the Uncle's quality of food as they work out the transition of new ownership.
