Review: Under Canvas Columbia River Gorge, Washington - AFAR

"Set on 120 forested acres in Washington’s White Salmon River Valley, this Under Canvas outpost felt tailor-made for soft-adventurists like me who want creature comforts with a nature fix. I stayed two nights with my husband and two kids in the Mount Hood Suite Tent—two safari-style tents joined by a deck and outdoor lounge that offered an epic view of Mount Hood—and appreciated the spacious tents outfitted with West Elm furnishings, bedside lanterns, USB charging packs, gas fireplaces, and en suite bathrooms with hot pull-chain showers, sinks, and flushing toilets. The camp is about 80 miles northeast of Portland (roughly a 90-minute drive from PDX without traffic) and works well as a base for biking along the Columbia River, kayaking or fishing the White Salmon River, or paddleboarding and windsurfing near Hood River, with breweries, wineries, and orchards close by for day trips. There’s no Wi‑Fi or screens, so guests ranged from toddlers to octogenarians; multigenerational families and friend groups enjoyed hot showers, clean sheets, outdoor fireplaces for s’mores, board games in the spacious lobby, and on-site programming like meditation and yoga. The staff were helpful organizing excursions and the kids loved summer-camp–style activities (making Father’s Day cards and charm bracelets, cornhole, and root beer floats). The property offers accessible tents, restrooms, and parking, but much of the terrain is rugged dirt or gravel, so contact the property if you have accessibility concerns. Rates start from $229." - Julia Cosgrove

Pacific Northwest Welcomes New Nature-Focused Hotels - AFAR

"Opening May 29, 2025 on 120 acres in Washington’s White Salmon River Valley near B Z Corner, this safari-inspired tented camp will offer 50 tents—most sleeping two, with some deluxe units for up to six—each fitted with king-size beds and high-end linens, a gas fireplace, an en suite bathroom with shower and toilet, a private porch, and select tents with stargazing windows above the bed. A central lobby tent will house an on-site experience coordinator to help plan mountain biking, rafting, and winery outings, and will host morning yoga, grab-and-go meals, and a cafe-style eatery. Bookable for the May–October 2025 season starting at $299 per night, the property will be the brand’s first Pacific Northwest venue and its 12th overall; its sister Lake Powell–Grand Staircase property earned a DarkSky Lodging certification in 2023. Although not adjacent to a national park (Mount Rainier is about three and a half hours away), the site sits under an hour from the Columbia River’s dramatic cliffs and Multnomah Falls." - Bailey Berg

Under Canvas Columbia River Gorge (White Salmon, Washington) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Under Canvas snapped up a spectacular piece of real estate for its first location in the Pacific Northwest. Just an hour’s drive from Portland, the 120-acre property in the scenic White Salmon River Valley is surrounded by wooded hills and the Cascade Mountains, the dramatic silhouette of Mount Hood visible in the distance. Though it’s tempting to doze by the fireplace inside your elegant safari-style tent with its luxurious king-sized bed — or sit reading for hours on its private deck — a natural playground awaits outside, and Under Canvas Columbia River Gorge is a terrific basecamp for exploring it. After rafting, hiking, or wine tasting nearby, the hotel’s lively indoor-outdoor café is the perfect spot to dine on fresh regional fare, and evening activities include stargazing, live acoustic music, and s’mores by the fire." - Tablet Hotels

What a wonderful experience! So much thoughtful design is incorporated here! Cars are kept away from tents, keeping the area so neat. Shuttles are at your service at a moments a notice, the staff are wonderful! Gorgeous view of Mt Hood, very comfortable beds, hot water, a deck at every tent! We highly recommend you stay here! Can’t wait to return!

Our stay at Columbia River Gorge was nothing short of amazing! From the arrival experience with Becca to the restaurant staff for dinner and breakfast, we thoroughly enjoyed everyone we came in contact with. And it was a pleasure meeting Omar, the General Manager during our departure. The tents are well appointed, very comfortable and a true glamping experience. It’s family friendly and the activities and services offer something for everyone. And you can’t beat the view of Mt Hood from almost every spot on the property. Our only complaint is that we couldn’t stay longer! Thank you for a wonderful stay and we can’t wait to come back!

Had the most magical stay at Under Canvas Columbia River Gorge! From the first sip of their incredible morning espresso to the rotating specialty menu (hello, s’mores French toast!), every detail felt special. At night, the stargazing was unreal...the sky was so dark we could see what felt like thousands of stars. They even provide complimentary s’mores by the fire each evening, which made it extra cozy!! Also the view of Mount Hood was so pretty from our tent! The location is perfect for adventuring, too. In just two days, we explored multiple waterfalls and trails, all were less than an hour away. Truly the perfect getaway, and I can’t wait to return some day and visit all of Under Canvas' locations! 🌲✨

I stayed with my family (two adults, 9-year old child) at Under Canvas Columbia River Gorge this past weekend. I'll start by saying we aren't big campers, but we had a wonderful time. The "rooms" are canvas tents with bathrooms (including a simple shower) and real beds. There's no electricity, but they provide lanterns and backup batteries to charge your devices. Our room also had a sofa bed, as well as a small kids tent just outside the main tent which had 2 twin beds in it. The main tent had a gas stove, but we still piled on the blankets at night. The kids tent did not have a heater so my son slept on the sofa bed in our tent instead (could be less of an issue once the weather warms up a little bit more at night). There was no wifi on-property, and while there were areas on the road where I had no service (T-mobile), I could get a signal on the property. Speaking of road, be aware that the last couple miles or so of the road to the property are unpaved gravel.||The views from all over the property (I'm pretty sure all of the tents) were incredible. The staff was very welcoming and friendly, telling us all about Under Canvas. It turns out that most of the properties actually take the tents down completely during the off season, leaving just the platform and shower pan to be covered by a tarp during the winter. Very cool/impressive design.||There was one restaurant serving breakfast and dinner, plus a separate grab and go lunch. We were not on property during lunch time, which I guess is probably the case for most other guests as well. We ate breakfast and dinner there and the food was good as well as reasonably priced (especially considering they have a captive audience!). They had complimentary coffee and tea 24 hours a day, and those were also good. No food is allowed in the tents, to prevent rodents and other critters, but if you bring your own food you are welcome to eat it in the central common area.||In the evening there were free s'mores, including regular (Hershey's) and "mystery" bags which had other chocolate options (I saw Reese's, Kit Kat, Heath Bar and Hershey's Cookies & Creme). The central area of the property and especially the firepits turned out to be a nice gathering place to meet other guests. Chatting with other guests in the evening was a highlight of the stay. ||As a booking through Hyatt (not sure if because I'm a Globalist or all Hyatt bookings) I received a $20 credit to use on merchandise in their little shop. They have a nice selection of board games and card games to borrow during your stay. There were a couple of telescopes, as well.||Under Canvas offered activities you could book directly (fly fishing, guided hikes, white water rafting) but we didn't book any of those so I can't comment on the quality. We did several hikes in the area. Most of them were actually not that close to the property, and in fact may have been as close or closer, in some cases, to Portland than to Under Canvas. This wasn't a barrier for us, however, just an observation.||Overall it was a really enjoyable stay, and I hope to visit more Under Canvas properties soon.

We recently celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary as a gift with our adult children. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warmth and hospitality that made us feel both special and at home. The accommodations were beautiful and cozy surrounded by nature and the view of Mt. Hood. The staff went above and beyond to help us mark the occasion, even surprising us with complimentary desserts. This was more than a stay. It was a memory we'll treasure forever. I highly recommend the camp for couples or families as a unique and beautiful experience. We cannot thank the staff enough for making the stay very special.

We had a wonderful stay at Under Canvas Columbia River Gorge! The tents are absolutely adorable—cozy and thoughtfully designed. We especially appreciated the easy-button start gas fireplace that made chilly mornings extra comfortable. It did get a bit warm during the day, but they provided rechargeable fans which helped a lot. Lighting was just right in the evenings thanks to the lanterns provided, and although there’s no power in the tents themselves, the lobby had everything we needed—including bathrooms with hair dryers. The eco-conscious features like pull-chain showers and lever faucets were a nice touch, and the solar path lights made it easy to find our way around at night. We were able to get decent internet on our phones in the restaurant area during quieter morning hours, though it slowed down a bit as more guests arrived. There was plenty of parking, and the staff was happy to shuttle us to and from our tent when needed. We also noticed a few accessible tents that had nearby parking, which is great for guests with mobility needs. Best of all, the views of the surrounding mountains were absolutely stunning. A truly unique and memorable experience—we’re already looking forward to our next Under Canvas stay!

Perfect place for a relaxing weekend, and a gateway to nearby beautiful outdoor rec areas. The staff was beyond kind. They remembered that our group was gluten free and brought gluten free s’mores kits to us at the fire and asked if we would like some. The golf carts to help bring luggage to/from the tent were fun and staff came promptly upon being called to our tent. They also provided helpful hiking recommendations and insight on local spots. The views were just incredible. Everything was put together with a lot of thought and care. The morning yoga on the deck with views of the trees and Mt Hood was lovely. The instructor led a great class. Under Canvas provided a wonderful weekend retreat!

Yelp
Had a great glamping experience at Under Canvas. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly and enthusiastically. All the details of our stay and ins and outs of the property (mainly, no food in the tents) was explained to us thoroughly. After we checked in, we followed an employee (Ryan, I believe) in a golf cart to the parking area. The employee helped us unload our vehicle, then drove us to our tent, and helped us unload our items into the tent. Ryan explained everything about the tent to us. The tent suite we stayed in had a king size bed and a sofa pull out bed, which Ryan made up for us. The tent was pretty comfortable. On the porch, there were two chairs and a table for sitting outside. Inside the tent, there were battery packs for charging items, fans, towels, shower, toilet, a sink, lanterns, and a gas fire place. We were sent a text message that we could reply to anytime for assistance. We used that text feature for rides back to the lobby tent and parking areas, to get replacement battery packs, for information on the area, etc. There is a restaurant on site that offers breakfast and dinner. The prices in the restaurant are average but the portions are on the smaller side. Coffee and tea are available 24/7 for free. The campsite offers free activities such as painting, s'mores making, board games, and telescopes for stargazing. The campsite is well maintained. The views are beautiful. Overall I had a great experience. My biggest complaint is sometimes it took awhile to get answers to text messages...like hours. Ryan was the best employee we encountered. He was helpful in anyway we needed. He was also pretty quick at servicing our requests. The other employees were great too, but Ryan was exceptional. Not sure if I'd visit again, only because they have other properties that I would like to explore.
