Simply an incredible experience from the checking in process to live music to s’mores in the evening. The stargazer tent is worth the splurge. We stayed two nights with inclement weather but finally saw the sun on our final day. The deck has a gorgeous view of Mount Rushmore. Despite the weather, we thoroughly loved the experience. The tent was immaculate and the bedding was warm and comfortable and the little stove can make the tent nice and cozy. It was in the 40s when we checked in. The staff was always quick to respond to a text for assistance and everyone greeted us with a sincere smile. We ate at the restaurant both nights and, it was delicious. The little things made it special: s’more packages, ice for our cooler and water bottles, coffee and water stations, games available to play, and sleep masks in the tent. We only wish we could have stayed a third night to be able to completely immerse ourselves in all that is available in the area. The location is ideal to explore the monuments, Black Hills, and Badlands. We are looking forward to checking out the other Under Canvas locations.

We really enjoyed staying at Under Canvas! It was a great mix of nice room amenities but still out in nature. We stayed in one of the suites with a bathroom in it and a pull out couch for our family of 4 with young kids and it was a good fit. The staff was friendly and the food in the main dining room was good quality. We enjoyed s'mores with live music one evening, which was delightful. We'd highly recommend this place if you are interested in camping around the mount Rushmore area.

If you're looking for a unique stay with unbelievable views, great food, and excellent service, that's family and dog-friendly, book now. The tents are well-appointed with plenty of room for several adults (even the smaller ones). The bathhouse is exceptionally clean and well-stocked with high quality bath products. There are many activities on site, such as games, disc-golf, and a fantastic hiking trail. The main deck has a great view of Mt. Rushmore, and it's only a 10 minute drive to the entrance. The nighttime views of the sky are truly unforgettable. Highly recommended. ☺️

Google
The site was clean, comfortable and nicely furnished. The staff considerate, accommodating and polite. The bed was comfortable and warm with lush blankets. The wood burning stove provides ample warmth. The public showers and toilets are clean, but be prepared to wash while continuously holding the water on with one hand. The tents are pretty close to each other so noise and stray light was an issue whereby making rest after a day of hiking difficult. Lack of after hours management made resolution with noisy neighbors after 11 PM impossible. The price (~$500/night) is high considering the low quality of rest and privacy.

Under Canvas is a fun, unique experience! The staff are welcoming, professional, and kind! My family and I enjoyed our tent! It was very clean. The beds were comfortable and the linens as my granddaughter said, “Smelled very fresh!”Although it was over a 100 degrees with no real fans to speak of lol, once we opened up the tent the airflow cooled it down and it really cooled off at night which was wonderful. |We enjoyed the nightly activity/craft and games available. The food was good and we enjoyed the outside seating. I also appreciated how safe I felt there, as staff regularly patrol the grounds. Under Canvas is close to other local attractions, such as Mt. Rushmore, where we went to the nightly lighting ceremony. The 1880 Train station, Holy Terror Golf is Keystone, and other fun local attractions. We will definitely stay again.

Google
Under Canvas Mount Rushmore exceeded all our expectations. We planned our stay as a relaxing conclusion to our weeklong road trip, and it did not disappoint. The tents are well-maintained, and the furniture and beds are very comfortable. While we were there, a large storm hit, and we spent that time in the main tent, which was quite relaxing, aside from a few poorly behaved children, which is beyond Under Canvas's control. However, our kids loved it. The food is fantastic, and the atmosphere is excellent. Overall, I would recommend this place!

Google
EXCELLENT stay! I cannot recommend staying with Under Canvas Mount Rushmore enough. First off, the location is absolutely stunning. Located in the hear of the Black Hills, it’s a very short drive to trails throughout Custer State Park as well as to Mount Rushmore. My deluxe tent was cozy and nice with clear attention to detail, I also had an amazing view. The bed is also extremely comfortable! I appreciated the staffs kindness as they truly made my stay special. Also, the breakfast and dinner menu were great, and food was fantastic. Thank you guys again, I will be back!

My niece and I stayed here for three days and had a truly wonderful experience. The staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating, making us feel genuinely cared for throughout our visit. The bathrooms were clean and well-maintained, which was very important to us. We loved being surrounded by nature while still enjoying the comfort and luxury of our tent.||One of the highlights was the breathtaking view of Mount Rushmore from the observation deck — simply spectacular! The main tent offered a variety of daily activities that appealed to all ages and interests. We especially enjoyed the live music, which created a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere as we unwound in the common area.||The on-site restaurant was also impressive, with daily specials that added a nice touch to our stay. For an even better experience, it would be great if blankets or outdoor heaters were provided for those lounging on the observation deck, especially during cooler evenings.||Overall, this was the perfect blend of adventure and comfort, and we highly recommend it to anyone seeking a unique and memorable getaway.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I came across Under Canvas on accident while looking for a place to stay during a road trip. We were beyond impressed to say the least. It happened to be the last night they were open for the season, but we were still greeted with the most welcoming staff and the most amazing atmosphere. The little bungalow/tents are adorable and have a perfect little wood stove inside. The views were breathtaking. We even got a free breakfast for being their last customers of the season!

Yelp
1) No AC! It gets hot in the afternoon. 2) Shower temperature is not adjustable, too hot for kids! Also, you have to keep holding the pull to get water. So basically you can only wash with one hand. 3) Noise! When wind blows on the tent, it sounds like non-stop fire crackers. Our whole family was woken up at 3am! 4) Last but not least- BEDBUGS!!!!! We spent $700+ for one night. I got 200+ bites and my hairy husband got 50+ bites. Luckily, our son sleeps on the couch and only got a few on his feet. Now I am still suffering in unbearable itchiness and worried about what if the bedbugs have come to my house.

Yelp
Genuinely can't say enough about this place! It's so beautiful and clean and everyone who works here is dope and so kind and helpful. The amenities are great and so is the food. There are also hot showers with soaps and fresh towels. The tents are adorable and beds are so comfy. HIGHLY recommend coming to an under canvas no matter where you are- I know I'll be coming back. They truly think of everything.

Yelp
Friendly checkin with a tour of the facilities. They are only serving breakfast and dinner. The have complementary coffee, tea, and hot cocoa! They even have some fruit and baked goods to go with your coffee. The food and the restaurant was well prepared and delicious. Lots of selection including beer and wine. The tents and bathroom were very clean and comfortable. They even provide clean towels in the bathrooms with shampoo and body wash. They have nightly fires with s'mores kits provided in the main tent to take back to the fire pits. We did the hike around camp with Rose and Mark and they had such great information to share about the area and gave us recommendations for other sites to see around the area. They have yoga mats and blocks to borrow. We stayed in a tent with the kids tent right next to ours- very nice beds, pillows and blankets. They had a small stove to warm your tent but it was not needed during our stay. We stayed with kids and they loved seeing Mt. Rushmore light up at night from the main patio. Definitely will stay with an Under Canvas property again.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this company & the experience! I have nothing but good things to say (except that no one in South Dakota wears masks & they are rude about it- but that isn't Under Canvas' fault). If you are looking to experience nature while maintaining basic comforts, there is no better company than this. -The service was 10/10! Everyone is super nice, helpful & kind. They are all willing to do anything you ask of them. -The tent is BEAUTIFUL! We got the skylight tent and it was truly amazing watching the stars while in the comfort of a fluffy bed. Everything from the shower to the battery chargers is perfectly thought out. If you can, I definitely recommend getting a tent with its own bathroom. -The food was SO good! I didn't expect to actually like the food but everything was really really good! The whole experience was amazing! The place is perfectly located just a few minutes away from Mt Rushmore- you can even see it from the camp. They had bingo, s'mores and trivia when I was there, which was so fun and they had great prices. Will definitely be going to another Under Canvas location soon! Loved it!

Yelp
I can't say enough amazing things about Under Canvas. I had high expectations and I was wowed by the beauty and nature. The food was amazing also. We stayed in the Star Gazer yurt and it was more expensive than I originally wanted to pay, but it was worth the money for the shower/toilet in our tent and also the view of the sky while in bed. This was quite an experience. The picture don't fully do it justice. This location had a community area with a restaurant. They were hosting bingo while we were checking in. There were surprisingly more children there than I would have thought. That area had a ton of tables and games to keep you entertained if you didn't wanna hang in your yurt. We decided to sit on the scenic patio and eat dinner and share a bottle of wine. The Rose was perfect for a nice night and it paired well with our Zoodles and chicken bruschetta entrees. They were not only stunning, but the best food around! We had the best service and they drove our luggage to and from our vehicle in a golf cart and assisted with all of our needs. Thank you!!! Go, adventure and live life!

Yelp
This review is for a one night stay in a Deluxe tent in mid-September. Tent: - It was really nice to have our own private toilet, sink, and shower! - Bed was super comfy and the blankets were great in keeping warm! - USB lanterns and battery charger were immensely helpful to have! - The two chairs in the tent and on the porch were quite nice for just chilling and relaxing. - We got the fire going in the stove however in the process, we ended up filling the ENTIRE tent with smoke and had to open the tent flaps in order to not just inhale smoke which defeated the entire purpose of lighting the fire. We set the stove to only let in the minimal amt of air in but we woke up super congested and our throats and noses were scratchy from all the smoke. Lobby/Common Area: - They had heat lamps for later in the night that we really appreciated! - Complimentary fire and s'mores was WONDERFUL! They had them by the check-in desk and everything you needed was provided including the graham crackers, chocolate (full bars of hersheys!), marshmallows, and sticks. They also had Reese's (full size) and hand sanitizer which came in handy after roasting marshmallows. - When we arrived, they were just starting trivia. Bailey was absolutely WONDERFUL and we learned so much about South Dakota. She was also kind enough to give prizes to everyone who participated. - There were a lot of games that were available for common use. - Complimentary water bottles were great, except that they ran out and didn't replace. - The view of Mt Rushmore is a bit of a stretch. If it's a cloudy day, there's no way you can see anything. Luckily for us, it was a clear day so we were able to see it from the boardwalk area behind the Lobby/Common Area. Food: - They had complimentary coffee, tea, and hot chocolate available at all hours. However, their hot water dispenser was pretty gross. It just tasted like lukewarm coffee dregs. We also tried using the hot water dispenser on the water dispenser but it wasn't hot at all. - Didn't get dinner (opted to eat in Keystone) but seemed like they had a lot of options. We decided to stay for breakfast and my friend opted for the pancakes, which was the safer choice. I ended up getting the breakfast hash (potatoes, onions, peppers, and sausage) which was a huge mistake because later that day I ended up getting food poisoning and spent the rest of the day incapacitated. This was a really big disappointment and ruined the experience because that will be the first thing I think of every time I think of this glamping trip and UnderCanvas.

Yelp
Under Canvas has been on my bucket list for a long time now and my what a game changer. My husband and I booked a night for their Deluxe tent which maybe at least a $100 more compare to the safari but you have the convenience of having your private bathroom and shower. The room/tent was spacious and trendy. You have a private fire pit inside with unlimited logs to keep you cool for the night. The guest services were all fantastic and accommodating. The views here are amazing. The deck offers a great view of Mount Rushmore and at night we had someone do a history 101 lesson of Rushmore right before the lighting ceremony. The food menu is always changing and it's incredible. The complimentary coffee, tea, apple cider and hot cocoa was always available and they also offer s'mores nightly at 7PM. Our room and bed was surprisingly incredibly comfortable. Prolly the best sleep I've had in our Roadtrip. The blankets were warm and weighted. Make sure to take the 2.2 mi hike. Views are amazing. Overall I highly recommend this Under Canvas Location

Yelp
Well......if you like hot, muggy canvas, no electricity, no air conditioning and no 21st century accommodations then you'll be ok with it. You have to shower with one hand holding water on. Disappointed that ee's wear the propaganda mask in So. Dakota. They do have internet cell service (not WiFi). Fantastic breakfast burrito. The Walleye last night was kind of fishy but they give u a good amount of food. No room service and no electricity for $500-$600 a night, granted July 4 weekend. I believe my glamping days are over before they started. Lol. Not my thing. I can't stand seeing ppl with kids wearing mask.

Yelp
A fun stay! I think it all comes down to tent placement. Ours was conveniently located to the main tent but that meant it was noisy. There was promise of s'mores and bingo but the place was overrun by children. Food was tasty but expensive and small portions. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Not great for an quiet adult getaway but fun overall. The tent was super comfy!

Yelp
We wanted to try out glamping and figured Mount Rushmore and SD trip would be a great opportunity to do that. First interaction with under canvas was via the support email. Had a little human error (mine) in booking and their support was super responsive and we got it fixed. Second interaction was email and due to a reservation change. Mother Nature can be unpredictable and glamping still ends in amping. Here again, super responsive, to the point and took care of what needed to be done. Third interaction was at arrival. This was one of the best check in experiences ever. Incredible staff, very friendly, informative and just nice people. Gave us a lift to our tent, which was silly close to reception and totally included our kiddo in the experience. The tents are awesome. Well constructed, great wood burning stoves, excellent beds and cots. Seriously nice digs for being nestled on a hill side. The whole campground was really well done. You can tell a lot of thought and skill was put into this concept. Fourth interaction was at the s'mores fire. Again, really friendly, engaging and informative folks work and stay here. Here again, kiddo was totally included and loved it. I have to say, if you have kids and the place your are staying makes those little gestures to make your kids happy.......it's gold. The view is fantastic too. Fifth interaction, and I only bring this up because of the outcome. We ordered dinner, ticket got lost, time went by, we all were pretty hungry and on the edge of hangry. Once they realized we hadn't gotten our food, they were all over it. Multiple people checked in with us. My daughters food came out in lightening speed. Ours was shortly after. It wasn't rushed, it was delicious. They offered dessert, etc. we said no, it's ok, etc. Later they came by and the lady who took our order told us they comp'd the whole dinner. Next day when we ordered breakfast the manager Checked and made sure all was good. Totally accident but they handled it with such kindness and attentiveness it really spoke to the type of place they are running. The checkout was super fast and equally as awesome. Seriously, if you want a great experience overall and across the board, go do this. We will definitely visit the folks at under canvas again.

Yelp
I'm so glad we decided in booking our stay here. I don't think you can find any better in the Mt. Rushmore area. The tent was huge, king size bed was super comfortable. All the staff was amazing. Big shout out to the kitchen crew. Hands down the best restaurant in the area. No kidding. From bison burgers actually cooked medium to the glazed pheasant, it was all on point. This is the only place I would consider staying in the area.

Sandra P.

Yelp
The accommodations are comfortable and king size beds were ridiculously comfortable! Haven't slept that great in years! Live music in the evening and great coffee in the morning. Appetizers were great - especially the charcuterie board!! The main dishes were good and the staff was accommodating and friendly. Already looking into our next UC destination.

Eilonwy S.

Yelp
Everyone here was super helpful and accomodating. The tents were comfortable, the food tasty, and the grounds beautiful. I highly recommend the on-site hike! (Only drawbacks were that the pullout bed was only as comfortable as a typical pullout bed.)
google avatar

J C.

Yelp
This place is fantastic! I can't say enough about how great every aspect was in our stay. We booked on a whim and couldn't believe how nice the accommodations are. Staff is tremendous! Food is amazing! Tent was over the top. We'll be planning future trips around stays at other locations.

Yelp
We arrived and were greeted by Daniel. He was so friendly and knowledgeable. He gave us a tour and loaded our luggage into the tent. Our tent was fabulous! The bed was comfortable, the bathroom in our tent was nice(I recommend getting a tent with a bathroom/shower). We made s'mores around the fire in the evening and took in the view of Mt. Rushmore lit up at night. We were impressed with the sustainability and resourcefulness. Very eco-friendly. Didn't eat on site so can't say anything about dining. Loved our stay here!

Yelp
So flippin worth it! We were there on 8/7/2018 and got a star gazer tent. The tent experience was phenomenal - the bed was very comfortable - flushing toilet and running water in the tent made it for me. The tents are nicely spaced apart from each other so you really aren't looking directly in to another tent. Watching the meteors whoosh on by while in bed was quite the experience. And I can't say enough about the staff - awesome people who worked very hard to make sure we (and everyone else) had a great time and were well taken care of. Highly recommend - be prepared to glamp!

Michael S.

Yelp
This place is so awesome! The tents are very spacious and have all the comforts of home. The beds are comfortable and the fact that the mountain air is cool at night makes no a/c needed. Our tent had soap, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash; all of which had essential oils in them. Our tent had a restroom in it but some didn't. With that said, the public bathrooms were very clean and private. The staff were so friendly and accommodating to the needs of everyone who was staying there. The food served from the restaurant was absolutely outstanding and they ensured that everything was served fresh. The 24 coffee was a huge plus and the main reception tent was the hub of the camp and provided food, entertainment, a place for socializing, and an outstanding view of Mt. Rushmore. If you like to camp in style then you should try "glamping" at Under Canvas- Mt Rushmore!
google avatar

Emma Ruth S.

Yelp
More than what we expected. Inside the tent is clean, the bed has clean linens and very comfortable, with stove heater and clean toilet and shower with hot water. Good for everyone. They have place to play games. You can do s'mores and they provide everything. Great customer service, staff are very attentive and friendly. This is what you call "Glamping". If I come back to Mount Rushmore will definitely stay at this place again.
google avatar

Beverly K.

Yelp
The staff makes every effort to make guests as comfortable as possible. They give a tour and demo of your tent and accessories. You feel relaxed and have plenty of privacy. Had dinner at the cafe which was delicious. Blackened salmon and baked walleye with charcuterie board. They have wine and beer for those interested. Their large family friendly deck over looks the Black Hills and Mt Rushmore. Don't miss the lighting at 9:30pm. They had live music, campfires with s'mores, and plenty of room to run around. The bed and bedding is warm and comfortable. Warm water in the shower was great! You do get a battery pack to charge your phone. I highly recommend this location!!!!!

Yelp
Amazing experience! So happy we went. And the good is great! Get a yurt with a shower!

Yelp
This place is great! Good service upon check in, clean area, great views. I stayed in the King w/out a bathroom. Honestly, one of the most comfortable beds I've slept in. I would stay here again and will recommend to friends. *Apple maps will lead you to the middle of nowhere if you punch it in. They'll text you the general area which is near the Roosevelt Inn.

Jennifer F.

Yelp
Me and my family of 4 loved it here. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly, and anything we needed was taken care of. We could see Mount Rushmore directly from our bed in the tent (even if it was very small). Loved the rustic feel of the tent and ensuite bathroom. Food was great, and common areas were well-spaced to maintain social distancing. There were mystery s'mores one night and my kids would not stop talking about them, they thought it was so cool. Amazing place to make home for a few days, and we are already trying to figure out which Under Canvas destination to visit next.

John F.

Yelp
Shave before you stay here, no warm/hot water at the sink! No ice machine and no WiFi ! It's a "one and done" deal. Can't imagine anyone returning for a second time! Way to rustic for most anyone and over priced is a under statement! Food was good and staff was extremely friendly, but the only two bright spots in my opinion.

Karen A.

Yelp
Experience of a lifetime. Under Canvas was so welcoming & friendly. From booking our reservations to checking out at the end of our stay, their staff went out if their way to make our vacation as enjoyable as could be. Excellent chef & wait staff, great live music & spectacular views of Mt Rushmore. Looking forward to try their other locations

Alexandra A.

Yelp
An absolute must! Under Canvas- Mt Rushmore was a dream for my mine and my husbands first wedding anniversary. From the moment we arrived we were treated to the utmost hospitality and even through our stay it never faulted. We stayed in a deluxe tent and it was amazing! Everything was up to a 5 star hotel standard at all times of the day. The reception desk is staffed 24/7 and they are always friendly and upbeat. The site is everything you can dream of at the base of Mt Rushmore!!
google avatar

Heather C.

Yelp
This has to be my new favorite place to stay. We wanted to camp, but we just couldn't haul all the traditional camping gear on our trip. Under canvas solves that problem for you. They think of everything. They had a cot set up for our 10 year old, an extra chair on the porch and tons of extras. The food was amazing, and the staff was incredibly cheerful and always willing to go the extra mile. It rained on our trip so I was worried about keeping the kid happy... no worries... bingo, games, s'mores galore! We love this experience so much we are going to book again.

Yelp
Glamping in style, the tent had wood stove with fire starter ventilated outside. The king bed tent consisted of a king bed two nightstands on each nightstand was a battery pack with two usb slots, a night lamp on each table and a tiny fan on each nightstand with a card that gave the help number for the campsite. There were two lounge chairs an upside down weaved basket as a coffee table with a tray that had a book & magazine. A wood tippi three sticks tied as a design and a faux cowhide rug. Outside had log chairs for lounging. Kids mini beehive tent has two twin sized cots and a nightstand with one portable lamp. They are dog friendly and have an additional fee if the dog is residing in the tent. They have s'mores time in which they provide the s'mores. The staff also have golf carts so whenever you want you can get rides to and from places in the campground if you request a pickup. The restrooms are pretty decent they have mint shampoo, conditioner and body wash. They have a towels closet. The showers are timers you have to stay pulling the key ring for it to stay on it's designed this way to be environmentally friendly. You can't change the water temperature it's warm. Each bathroom has a shower in it and are individual full bathrooms. This made it easy for me to wash my children so it's family friendly. The lobby /restaurant/recreation area has tables board games beanbag chairs overall a nice family friend oriented area.. very welcoming. Aubrey sang lovely I tried to include the video but yelp only permits photos. Live music was good. Overall I would recommend.

Yelp
my wife and i generally like two very different experiences when we vacation. She likes a fancy 5 start hotel experience and i like the dirt. This was the perfect combination for us! Clean accommodations with a warm shower and toilet in our tent! Comfortable Kingsize bed and wood burning stove! highly recommend.

Jennifer T.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING! We got in late and there was a major storm, like severe weather alerts and tons of rain. My hubby wasn't keen on staying in a tent with this weather but upon check-in the kids were sold by the "coolness" of the main lodge/tent so we stayed. Everyone who works here is extremely nice, helpful and accommodating. With the bad weather and the delay of getting into our tent they bent over backwards to make us feel welcome. Food was excellent. Decently priced, although, kids meals could be smaller portions with a smaller price tag, but for the adults, we ate grilled fish and vegetables which was a nice healthy change from food while traveling. Our tent was spectacular. Kids were freaking out about how cool it was and were joking it was like Harry Potter, you step inside to a full blown living area! My husband, who was skeptical of this whole experience, immediately felt better! We had the most comfortable bed and bedding I have ever slept in! This experience is a must. It was clean, safe, comfortable and unique. The views from our tent were breath taking and the entire staff was beyond wonderful.

Ken G.

Yelp
What a great experience. Wife and I were looking for something a little different and Under Canvas was a perfect place to stay the night. We selected a deluxe tent and the bed, bath and other accommodations were great. The tent was well appointed with battery lanterns and fans (with USB chargers for your phone as well). The shower was very good. Under Canvas takes being environmentally conscious very seriously and they prove it in all of their business choices. The staff was phenomenal and went out of their way to address our every need. The onsite restaurant offers several dining options and the prices were reasonable. Highly recommend Under Canvas if you want to get away from a traditional hotel and enjoy nature, great accommodations and excellent service.
