"About 140 million years ago, Hong Kong experienced a series of powerful volcanic eruptions, resulting in eerie rock formations along the Sai Kung coastline. The area is now part of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, which stretches across the territory’s northeast corner. Though the park encompasses dozens of geosites, fishing villages, and abandoned Hakka villages, it’s most often associated with the hexagonal rock columns in the Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region. These rose- and honey-hued formations of ash and lava take the shape of vertical columns or swirling sculptures. If u are a rock lover, sea worshipper, walking fans. This is for u. Sadly I'm none of the above. Traffic is taxi only. No private vehicles, Uber... etc Nothing to eat or drink. It's hiking and like wandering in wilderness, one doesn't expect anything to eat except from your own backpack. To be fair, rocks are uncommon, so what? I don't want any of it. So who love this place? Our creator, I think.

Most amazing trek done in our stay in Hong Kong till date…the place is stunning and a must visit for all those who love nature…. Tip: from HK island best is for you to take the red taxi all the way up to the East Island Dam … or else you will need to change taxis as private cars are not allowed… have fun

This place is more accessible now as there is a minibus connecting Pak Tam Ching and the East Dam of High Island Reservoir (i.e. number 9A). However, 9A only runs on Saturday, Sunday and other public holidays and the queue is long on these days. I waited for about 40mins to get on the minibus. So, arrive earlier.

What a beautiful little spot. We camped at the campsite nearby and walked over in the morning. It was blazing hot but the view was spectacular! The blues and greens of the water, the shimmering ocean, the stunning formations of the molten lava, the majestic view of the reservoir, and even the dam was something to see. Come to learn how the earth and lava created the natural columns, how the sea carved caves and a small island, and how human engineering created a safe harbor so we could enjoy this place. If you love nature it's definitely a place to come and take in. There are busses that come in, otherwise you'll need to hike from the car park or take a taxi. Enjoy!

Great trip on September 14, 2024. It was crowdy cause of holiday weekend. We took a bus 94 from Sai kung bus terminal to Pak Tam Chung (about 15-20 mins ride). And then I took a mini bus to water Dam site of this rock formation location(last bus station). And then walk to the island and hike along the hills to view the rock island, also a UNESCO heritage site as well!!! ;)

The view is for sure stunning. Yet as you can go almost directly by taxi and minibus expect some crowd even on weekdays. The geopark tour itself is an easy walk and you will finish it under an hour. I suggest that you push the hike to the Beach (which is a 2 hours walk)
