10 Post Offices Worth Writing Home About

"The smallest post office in the United States serves the zip code 33943 in Ochopee, Florida, and only has space for one employee at a time. This tiny post office has been serving the region for generations.  Previously located inside the local general store, the post office was moved into its current home after the store burnt down in 1953. The small shed that houses the postal outpost was actually a storage closet for irrigation pipes before it was pressed into service as a post office. While the general store was never rebuilt, the small office has been more than sufficient for the infinitesimally small local population, last thought to hover around 11 souls. While full service, the Ochopee post office is simply a 7x8 shack with a cramped counter and mail slots on the back wall and a single fluorescent light to illuminate the space.     Despite the tiny population of Ochopee, America’s post office is actually the postal hub for people within an area of over 130 miles around the Everglades-based mailroom. Many of these customers are members of the Miccosukee and Seminole tribes." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Every trip we take must include at least one unusual attraction and this fit the bill. It is definitely tiny. If you're in the area it's a quick, fun stop.

While driving from South Miami and heading west to Naples on Route 41, (Tamiami Trail) I saw this at the corner of my eye and had to make a U-turn and told my wife what I just saw!!! She was looking down on her phone, so she missed it. It is the smallest, single door, Operational US Post Office, here in Ochopee, Florida. Manned by a single Postal Worker named DON, he was happy to talk about his Postal job. Plenty of free parking, no lines, no Christmas rush here. Walk right up to the door. Brought some stamps, took some photos and on we go to Naples. Pretty cool place to see along this route!!! 📨📨📨📪📪📪📬📬📬🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Such an adorably fun spot, definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area! You can send mail from here (even with the drop box after hours) so be sure to send yourself or a friend a post card from the country’s smallest post office.

Full service post office, hours noon to 4:00, I think. So cute I want to work there myself. I had some postcards I needed to mail then saw where I could buy a post card of this adorable post office, prestamped with the cancellation stamp of the little post office and a short history of the same. Took a few pictures, filled out my new postcards and left them to be mailed. Fed Ex came by while I was there. His truck was bigger than the post office. Stop by, take a picture and but a postcard for $1. Send it to a kid who will get a kick out of it.

A cool place to buy a postcard and see America's best post office.

Such a cute post office! I love tiny things and snail mail so it was a must stop. This is the second time I have stopped by and I made sure it was open. I even sent a post card to myself.

Omg! Don greeted us with a smile as if we were long lost friends. Says he sees thousands of people on a daily basis that are traveling through the area. Most like to take a moment to send off a little post card to home. He has a nice little set up inside too.

Yelp
A fun unordinary site! An actual operating post office! Historic spot along the trail. Postmaster has the best job in the USPS... more of a tour guide! They actually sell postal needs as well as postmark your cards. Easy on and off the trail with some parking.

Yelp
Being the smallest post office in the United States makes of this post office a fun landmark to visit. If you are in the area, stop by and see it for yourself. You are there to appreciate this famous post but that's about it. What you see is what you get. Tip: It's very close to Big Cypress Nal. Preserve where you can take a tour in a swamp buggy!

Yelp
How can you NOT stop here if you're passing by? It is the cutest post office, considered the smallest in the United States. According to the near by historical marker, it used to be an irrigation pipe shed before it was used after a fire in 1953 burned the existing general store and post office. It's been in continuous use ever since. [Review 12365 overall, 2151 of 2019.]

Yelp
If you are in a rush, drive through the alligator alley or I-75. If you want some entertainment, drive through US-41 from Collier County to Miami. One stop you can make is at Ochopee shortly after you pass US-29. Watch out for a sign 'Post Office.' It is the smallest post office building in US. It is measured roughly 8 x 8. It was a former piping shed for a tomato company. The general store and post office were burned down in 1953. This building was put in commission and still serve the residents of Ochopee! If you are in the area during their hours of operation, drop by to have your letters or mail post marked with 'Ochopee, FL 34141, smallest post office building in the U.S.A' or buy a postcard with the stamp on it.

Yelp
We were driving by and saw a sign for post office. This must be THE smallest post office in the world! Someone was actually working in there. I think I would have been a little claustrophobic. Lol.

Yelp
You never know what you will find when you are out exploring the Everglades. It just might be the smallest post office in the United States! It's located in Ochopee which is an unincorporated community in Collier County. Ochopee is the Seminole word for farm. You can find the post office on the Tamiami Trail also known as U.S. 41, 65 miles west of Miami or 35 miles east of Naples. What is now the town of Ochopee started out as a one family tomato farm in the 1920's. A few buildings grew up around the farm and in 1953 a fire destroyed the town post office and general store. From that fateful event a 7 by 8 foot shed that used to store the irrigation pipes from the tomato farm next door was called into service and made into the tiny post office it is today. It is so small that there is only space for one postal clerk at a time. The post office services 300 patrons, mainly members of the local Miccosukee and Seminole Indian tribes. The population of Ochopee is said to be 129 people. The original tomato farm was taken over by the federal government as they set aside land for Everglades conservation. All that remains now are a few small businesses. Fun fact, the person who delivers the mail from this post office has to travel a route that stretches 170 miles through three counties. Should you happen to find yourself at the post office when they are open you can line up at the window for one of the postcards bearing the coveted Ochopee 34141 zip code. Unfortunately for me they were closed but I ran into a lot of other people who were stopping by during there visit to Big Cypress National Preserve. I even got to take a picture of a family from Switzerland in front of it. It turns out the United State's smallest post office is world famous.

Yelp
Absolutely a photo op!!! Do not miss this little piece of history. The historic sign gives you the story. Easy in and easy out to get your picture!

Yelp
Yep, it's tiny. Sadly they weren't open when we stopped by, but it was on the way to where were were going so by all means we stopped by!

Yelp
A true testament that some things should never change. Peter M. tells it better than I could've. One person inside and it has all the basics except for a restroom. I hear that it closes on occasion when the attendant has to pee. Just about everyone stopping here takes a picture of it, wouldn't you?

Yelp
I found this place while mapping out a trip across Route 41 so there was no doubt I wanted to stop for a few minutes knowing it would be closed for the the July 4th Holiday. Considered to be the smallest post office in the United States, it's a little surprising this building hasn't under-gone any government sponsored renovations to bring it up to code to meet all the regulations required like any other federal facility being it was formerly an irrigation pipe shed belonging to the J.T. Gaunt Company tomato farm. It was hurriedly pressed into service by postmaster Sidney Brown after a disastrous night fire in 1953 burned Ochopee's general store and post office. The present structure has been in continuous use ever since-as both a post office and ticket station for Trailways bus lines-and still services residents in a three-county area, including deliveries to Seminole and Miccosukee Indians living in the region. Daily business often includes requests from tourists and stamp collectors the world over for the famed Ochopee post mark. The property was acquired by the Wooten Family in 1992. It's one of those places that's cool to stop and take a few photos of then move on...

Yelp
Whats not to love about the smallest post office in the USA? This is a very cool little post office that once housed an irrigation system for a tomato farm. This little Post Office is a great place to send Postcards from The Everglades National Park or Big Cypress National Preserve. Overall this is a unique stop along Route 41 in Southern Florida.

Yelp
We stopped on a whim and were shocked to find the Post Office open. A very nice woman (postmistress) was in charge and we were able to send some postcards from The Smallest Post Office. And, we received them the next day in our mailbox at home. This is truly one of the gems to be found on Old 41. If you are traveling across the Everglades, Old 41 offers many uniquely Florida experiences. Alligator Alley is for quick trips; Old 41 is for entertainment and a taste of Old Florida. This

Yelp
A must-see if you're headed on the Tamiami Trail (and especially if you are a tourist), as this is the smallest post office in the United States. The building is actually a tiny shed, which looks as if it has taken quite a few beatings. The shed had a prior life as a storage facility for irrigation pipes for a tomato farm, before it became the post office in 1953. The office is fully functional and famous for its post mark. They keep pre-stamped post cards on the counter for anyone who wants to have a little souvenir of his/her own and the person who delivers the mail from here has a daily route that stretches across three counties and is 132 miles long. Mail for over 900 residents is sorted here too. Check my picture of the post office's posted hours if you're planning to make a stop and want to see what the interior looks like, or if you want to get something postmarked!

Yelp
The Ochopee post office is considered to be the smallest post office in the United States. The building was formerly an irrigation pipe shed that belonged to the J.T. Guant Company tomato farm. However, in 1953 it was rather quickly turned into the Ochopee's general store and post office by postmaster Sidney Brown after the original Ochopee post office burned down in the middle of the night. The present building has been in use ever since as both a post office and ticket station for Trailways bus line. It still services the residents in it's surrounding three county area as well as making regular deliveries to the Seminole and Miccosukee Native Americans who reside in the area.

Yelp
Sometimes there are certain things so strange, so weird, so out of the norm yet so cool that you just can't help but be a 4 Star Yelp Fan of them. It seemingly amounts to nothing, so remote the Yelp Check In on my Android didn't work, but I can't really say it amounts to nothing when I see a bunch of kids eager to mail letters to themselves from the smallest post office in the United States in hopes of obtaining an Ochopee Post Office Stamp....since it surely must amount to something big for them.

Yelp
Such a tiny lil' place but with a friendly face behind the sliding door. Mailed a nice Manatee post card to my best friend from here.

Yelp
Friendly postal worker says a lot of mail comes in every day because so many people want a postmark from the smallest PO in the US. Worth a stop.

Yelp
Fantastic tourist stop to see the smallest US Post Office. Just a quick 10 minute stop for photos, buy a postcard and talk to the lovely counter lady. A little gem

Yelp
Super small. But super cool (as in, hip and neat to visit, not actual outside temperature wise which is as you would expect in South Florida). The gators are cool too (alligators, not the dreaded Florida Gators who play in that Swamp in Gainesville. They will never be cool. Just an imitation of a real football team. Go Vols!!!!!!!!!!!)

Yelp
I made a special trip back to the tiny P/O to mail postcards to my friends. Tthey were postmarked: Ft Meyers. I made a complaint and got a reply that said the UNITED STATES POST OFFICE was looking into it. Then, I never heard another thing, even when I tried replying to the email they sent me. Nada, nothing. So, take a picture and be happy with that.
