Awesome place for wedding and had nice city view on the 4th floor. I would definitely recommend this place to friends and others.

Very historic building. Rooms are a bit tired and need the extra heaters that are luckily in the room. Super nice and effective service, great food in the restaurant.

I stayed here hoping to use the Sauna and their steam room. I didn't end up using it. But generally the place was like a museum, definitely old. The room was ok, the floors make the wood sound when walking. It had a great view, and it felt I traveled back at the like Downtown Abbey. I would definitely come back, it was not perfect but had a great vintage experience

We recently had our wedding here and could not be happier. The staff were great and the space was beautiful. Best location in the city for out of towners, amazing view and ambiance. Gavin and Yvonne were incredibly nice, attentive, and accommodating through the entire planning process and the event itself. Outstanding!

Don't book a room here before confirming with the management that there won't be any major events at the club when you plan on staying. If there's a loud event, your room will be uninhabitable. I booked a room in late September and when we arrived back around 9:30pm, the walls were practically shaking due to a very loud party that was held upstairs on the third floor. I was told that the music had a hard stop of 11pm, though that didn't really matter since I couldn't even read or watch TV given how unbelievably loud the music was (and I doubted that it would actually quiet down at 11 given how many people were at the club). To her credit, the woman at the front desk was apologetic and said that they hadn't had this sort of event before, and that she and others warned the management that it would be too loud for guests. She was certainly correct and I suppose the management didn't care. They also refunded the booking fee. Thank God, I would be absolutely livid if they tried to charge me a dollar. I don't understand why the club gave me a room when they knew it would be uninhabitable. I want to emphasize that this wasn't just some music coming through the walls, the room was vibrating and I couldn't even find peace with my noise cancelling headphones. It would be unacceptable for 10 minutes let alone all night. We stayed at the Olympic Club down the street instead. It's frankly a far nicer club so if you have reciprocity at both, just stay there instead. 2 stars simply because it might be a nice club otherwise, and the front desk woman was apologetic and had a look on her face that suggested "well, we told the management that this would be a disaster but they didn't listen or care!"

Google
The building is what it is. What do I mean by that? The building is old. In the separate building which housed the gym and squash courts, the water had not worked for several days. Which meant the toilets had not been flushed for several days. The front desk staff does nothing to help with luggage. Now I understand that it is a private club, and that is not their role. But they could hold the door open. The continental breakfast is pathetic. You can find better hotels cheaper.

Watched 4th July fireworks from the street. Great location.

Google
I’d read a lot of mixed reviews about this place so was feeling a bit apprehensive, but it was a fantastic hotel!||It’s an old building but tastefully decorated. The bed was super comfortable and our room was lovely and quiet considering how central the hotel is located. The shower had incredible pressure and the bathroom was lovely. ||The staff were fantastic, particularly the guys in the restaurant. The cable car stop is right outside the hotel and there are plenty of bus stops nearby. ||Overall a fantastic stay and would definitely come again.

Yelp
This venue is small and intimate, but cozy and with a beautiful view. The elevator may or may not be working at any given point; may the odds be ever in your favor.

Yelp
This is old San Francisco. A lot of history. Ask the significance of the black cat. I appreciate the look and feel. Some renovation should happen, though. The staff is hospitable. That can make an evening.

Yelp
Got married here! Highlight of the experience was working with the event coordinator, Yvonne. She's super on top of it but also very considerate to give you space in your planning and decision making. The prices were better than anywhere else we went, and the catering is in house which takes away a lot of headache (on top of that, the food was delicious). The atmosphere is very cool and feels like 1920s/glamour/academia/cigar club. There is also a balcony outside that the guests LOVED. I would recommend choosing a preferred DJ vendor. There is a fee for going outside preferred DJs. The staff was incredibly kind and accommodating.

Yelp
I visited San Francisco for the first time after a weeklong business trip in Idaho, and stayed two nights at the University Club of San Francisco, as a reciprocal club member of the National University of Singapore Society. Choosing the University Club of San Francisco as my accommodation in San Francisco turned out to be the best travel decision I made for this trip. The staff were very friendly and helpful. For example, when I asked if there is any place nearby to have an early breakfast - before the official breakfast timing - as I had booked a day tour leaving at 6 AM, the staff went the extra mile by bringing me some snacks to consume on my way. I was also expecting a package, and the front desk not only agreed to receive my package, but also informed me as soon as the package arrived. They also helped to look after my luggage well, so that I didn't have to carry all my luggage to Sacramento and Los Angeles when I left San Francisco for three days before returning to San Francisco. I really like the historic feel of the entire Club's architecture. There were also paintings showing various universities including Columbia University, my alma mater. I stayed in a Standard Queen room. The furniture were traditional, but looked very well-maintained. The room and the bathroom were both clean and organised, and there was even small cupboard room to keep my jacket. Due to my tight travel schedule, besides staying in the overnight room, I only managed to utilise the gym, and went upstairs to the third and fourth floors to enjoy the nice view of the city on the morning I left San Francisco. But I realised the Club has so much more to offer. I'm sure I'll stay here again the next time I visit San Francisco, use other facilities such as the Bar & Grill.

Yelp
My wife and I chose the University Club of San Francisco for our wedding venue because of many reasons.... 1. The food was absolutely delicious. 2. We planned a murder mystery wedding and the venue fulfilled all of our expectations to make for a unique wedding. 3. Beth the bartender and her staff were so much fun and helped us create some interesting cocktails that our entire guest list loved. 4. The staff was incredible and was always able to handle any last minute changes or requests because they always come up. Lastly, we want to call out our wedding coordinator, Yvonne Lau. She was a main part of us choosing this venue and was an absolute star! She made us feel so comfortable throughout the entire process leading up to our wedding and even on our wedding day. At times when our wedding planner was nowhere to be found, Yvonne stepped up in a big way and was always there for us. 5 stars across the board for Yvonne, her team, and The University Club of San Francisco.

Yelp
Interior design is "early Addams Family," and it's in an out of the way location on Nob Hill.

Yelp
The venue was amazing. Historic, cool vibe, and great service. The layout is really wonderful for weddings. All of our guests were really impressed. One thing to make sure of is the bar package and wine inclusion. Ours escalated quickly when the servers kept filling up everyone's wine every 5 minutes. People commented on it. I would suggest that you ask them to just leave the bottles on the table or only fill them if asked. We also used the hotel rooms which was great for our elderly guests and our guests with children. So convenient! We highly recommend this venue.

Yelp
The University Club of San Francisco is one of those exclusive private organizations that would not have me as a member. However, they do run a hotel (2nd Floor) that's open to the public, and that's where we stayed during Gayle's birthday celebration in the City. Actually we won the stay via a Rotary Club charity auction. We drove into the City, valet parked at the Omni Hotel, and then took the steep walk up Nob Hill to the charming red brick building on the corner of Powell and California. From there, we walked to the Golden Gate Theater to see the Donna Summer Musical and then afterwards through Chinatown and North Beach, and ending up at The House for a most excellent dinner. I love private club buildings and in this case, our corner room was very nice, comfortable, and well appointed. The stay included a pretty decent (except for the luke warm coffee) continental breakfast on the 3rd floor and a nice view from the 4th floor. The individuals running the front desk at various times were very nice, and I had to smile at the Saturday night guy warning me playfully that "I'd be sorry" after I joked about "joining" one of the Christmas parties going on upstairs. My only regret is that their amazing wood horseshoe shaped bar was closed during the weekend (except maybe during that Christmas party I should have crashed) and all we could do was admire it through the door. There's also the Black Cat Bar on the 3rd Floor where our breakfast was laid out. Overall, Gayle and I had a very nice stay and would be happy to return as part of another fun night in the City.

Yelp
Yvonne was incredibly responsive, detailed, organized, and professional. She and her team ensured that everything ran smoothly and that our guests were well taken care of through the entire wedding .They provided exceptional catering service from start to finish. The team was incredibly professional and attentive to the guests needs, making sure everything was perfect on the big day. The food was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. We received numerous compliments from the guests on how amazing the food was. The bar team kept the whole crowd happy all night long.

Yelp
After being a guest for quite some time I joined this amazing private club. I wonder why I waited so many years. It is a beautiful building And the club was created in 1890. Originally it was a men's club but a few years ago they allowed ladies to join. For that I am glad. It has such a rich history and until 2003 The Press Club was on the third floor. I enjoy so much sitting in the bar, watching the San Francisco Giants while dining on delicious food. Simon is amazing. And Beth behind the bar creates unusual cocktail drinks. Love love love this place. I can't wait to stay Overnight in one of their rooms soon.

Yelp
I went there as a customer of their hotel. A very charming old building on the top of Nob Hill. However here is the problem. We were there during a heat wave in SF ( yes it does happen) and having no AC in the room and/or the common room was very disturbing, especially at night. Ok, the room had a fan but did not do enough! Also the window giving access to the escape ladder had a single window, which let us hear all the traffic and having the "beep beep" from a truck backing up at 3am is not cool. Now, the room was small People working there were nice but they can make anything about the facilities. The top floor with the bar, pool table, big chairs is nice. The view is stunning Also because of the location, be ready to walk up hill!

Yelp
I hate to leave one star but last experience was this bad!! The venue and staff have been AMAZING mostly every time I've been here. (I've been everything from a guest of members, to a vendor, to a wedding guest...) Unfortunately, the last time I was there an African American woman with short hair who was checking folks in was pretty rude. There were a couple of people standing around and throughout the night each of them came up to me and said things like: 1. "Wow, I don't know what that was about at the entrance, but I'm sorry you had to deal with it." 2. "That was ridiculous and unnecessary. I'm glad you didn't respond, although you had every right to tell her off!" 3. "I was standing there and the way she spoke to you caught my attention in a very bad way. She was out of line. If you want, I don't mind speaking to management on your behalf." Now, if I had never been before, I'd never return. However, I'm going to treat this as an isolated incident in hopes that management sees this and addresses it. I am a business owner and a pillar of my community who leaves room for folks to be human! We all have bad days. The unfortunate part of this is when the "face" of your business makes your company look horrible!

Yelp
We must had our wedding here over the weekend It. Was. Perfect. The venue is gorgeous the staff are so nice and every detail was exactly how u wanted it. Ashley in catering is simply the most amazing human being who never get irritated as I started sending whirlwinds of emails regarding final details. They communicated the ever shifting Covid regulations quickly and thoughtfully. Not to mention our wedding food was DELICIOUS. Every single one of our attendees blown away at how good their meals were. The kitchen did amazing serving it 3 course dinners with 4 entree options. Honestly my husband and I can't wait to figure it other events we can have here because of how simply amazing it was.

Yelp
The hotel staff and wedding vendors/venue were accommodating and very kind. As a nursing mother away from her baby, I needed the accommodations to store my baby's milk, and the hotel staff went above and beyond to help me store it for my stay. I highly recommend this stay.

Yelp
Old? No. Distinguished. Stuffy? No. Exclusive. Boring? No. You're in command of how you spend your time. So if you're bored, well...you really have no one to blame but yourself. Taco night (Tuesday). Club night w live jazz (Wednesday). Hamburger night (Thursday). There are board meeting nights that every member can sit in on. There's even a book club. The menu is both conservative & ambitious. Old world & modern. Food can be hit or miss, but the burger has never let me down. There are 2 main dining rooms, 2 large bars, a library, & a fabulous terrace. The view though...there's an absolutely stunning, world class view that is breathtaking. It runs the entire length of the space, thanks to the picture windows. Many weddings & receptions have happened here just for that very reason alone. There is definitely an old school vibe. But such is the case when you're in such a distinguished environment. The bar on the top floor has a huge flat screen that's perfect for big game nights. And Kenny, the server who has been here for decades, always has a warm smile & greeting for you. If you want to sit down for dinner, I definitely recommend making reservations. The 2 dining rooms book & fill fast! Plus, on many nights the 2nd floor dining room is closed for private parties or events, leaving only the top floor open. So...call first. Membership still has its privileges. 5 stars.

Yelp
Wedding planning is a stressful affair. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. But it's a great life lesson that if you surround yourself with the right people, you can do anything. That's a roundabout way of saying that to pull off a wedding in this day and age, you need a good planner. My now-wife and I are both physicians, so juggling our insane work schedules (lots of weekends, nights, and early mornings) is a frustration in and of itself. That said, Yvonne made a valiant yearlong effort of handling our paranoid late-night text messages and near-constant barrage of emails towards the end of the journey, mixing in her expertise as the University Club's wedding coordinator with humoring our petty demands on quite a few issues. From the start, she connected us with a number of vendors who have previously worked with the U Club, and this was an excellent idea as our photographer knew when to capture the best city skylines (seriously, the view from the club is absolutely insane) and our florist rocked the arrangements in the venue. Her encyclopedic understanding of the space (Yvonne has memorized the time of sunset for each month, since that's the best time to have the ceremony) and repository of prior wedding photos and vendors also allowed us to imagine exactly what our special day would look like. As for the club itself, the space is an extremely charming, historic institution clad in aged wood paneling, stained glass, and turn-of-the-century wallpaper. "Classy" is the appropriate adjective here, yet once the sun goes down, the incomparable views of the modern SF skyline from the building's colossal full-wall windows leave no doubt where in the world you're dining. And speaking of food, we chose options of filet mignon, Chilean sea bass, and a dizzying array of vegetarian (and vegan) choices, which were all marvelously (and artfully) assembled. All in all, we could not have asked for a more romantic, unforgettable location to say "I do". A huge thank you to Yvonne and the University Club for making our special day perfect.

Barbara G.

Yelp
We recently hosted a wedding at the University Club of SF. It was amazing! The location and view from the venue was awesome. Yvonne was a pleasure to work with and helped us from first contact to the actual event. The food and staff were top notch. Everyone at the wedding has had great things to say about the reception. Could not have picked a better spot for a wedding. Thanks University Club for a great event. Highly recommended!

Yelp
As a guest here for a wedding, I must say this place is pretty unique for a wedding venue. The fact that there are multiple floors and great views of DTSF make this place truly unique! The food on the other hand was also amazing. I had this nice piece of prime rib that just melted in your mouth. Compliments to the chef/kitchen staff at University club! The ambiance of this place reminds me of a gentlemen's club no offense. The architecture is very much 1800's but they manage to keep things clean and modern. The 4th floor has a wonderful bar space as well as a pool table. Parking here sucks, but there is a parking structure called Masonic parking structure that has $10 all day deal on weekends. Otherwise, one can always try street parking too!

Yelp
We couldn't be happier having our wedding at the University Club in April 2023. The moment we met Yvonne we knew that the University Club was the right venue for us. She is so friendly, knowledgeable and relatable. We knew that she was going to make our wedding wonderful with as little stress to us! Yvonne handled everything with ease and worked so well with our other vendors so our wedding day went flawlessly. Everyone at the University Club is so friendly and accommodating. The head bartender met with me the day before the wedding to make sure everything was perfect and she made sure I had a drink in my hand all night. The front desk staff are so helpful and made our guests feel welcome all weekend. Our guests still talk about the delicious food they had. The appetizers are amazing and the prime rib/salmon station was a huge hit. My personal favorite was the mushroom ravioli, we want to come back just for that ravioli! Everything is made onsite so the food is hot and timed perfectly with the evening. Being a more all inclusive site saved us so much hassle, not needing to worry about rentals and additional vendors showing up on time. Knowing they've done this so many times saved so much anxiety! For being an upscale venue in the heart of San Francisco, they are a very reasonably priced wedding venue, with no hidden fees at the end! Pick the University Club and dazzle your guests with delicious food and stunning views of San Francisco!

Yelp
Nice, upscale setting for special occasions. Our friends had wedding trouble with the wildfires in wine country, so they rebooked here last-minute and it came together okay, all said and done, for a quick Plan B. Service timeframes with the drink service and the food service were way off though. Everything happened about 45 minutes later than it should. Kind of frustrating.

Yelp
This was such a beautiful venue to photograph! The staff at University Club was absolutely amazing and so accommodating! They were such a joy to work with and the wedding was absolutely gorgeous! Would love the opportunity to photograph here again!

Yelp
I've been to the University Club for a couple of special events now. I went to an alumni club event and tonight the LitQuake 2018 opening event. It's a special space for people to mingle in and see presentations. They have a couple bar spaces. There's always appetizers and cheese plates. Step outside to the veranda and you can see a view of the cityscape, which now includes the SalesForce tower. Also, in view is the Transamerica pyramid. It's an old San Francisco building and it's a private club that takes membership. It is selective somewhat I guess. It is expensive. It also offers wedding events and I talked to the young woman who helps run wedding services at the University Club. This is often used by elite colleges and universities for events and networking. It's always a great place for events and feels nice. It's also a little stuffy I guess. Last time I went to a LitQuake opening party was at the War Memorial green room. Let's see where LitQuake leads us this year.

Yelp
112 year old building that looks magical. Incredible place to have a wedding. Parking sucks because that don't have their own parking garage.

Yelp
Having our wedding at the University Club of SF was the BEST DECISION! As soon as we toured the venue, we knew it was the one. We were blown away by the elegant interior and beautiful city views. We also liked how there were several different spaces within the club that could be utilized during the wedding (library, game room, lounge, dining room) so that it felt like different portions of the evening could take place in different spaces. Upon booking the venue, Emily Mattison-Earls (director of sales and catering at the UC) was amazing to work with! She was super responsive, patient, calm, and an all around cool person to be around! Her help coordinating the logistics of our wedding day was essential and put our mind at ease. She went above and beyond to ensure that our wedding day was a rousing success and one of the best days of our lives! Her constant calm, helpful attitude, and expert organization was a blessing throughout the various ups and downs over the 6 months of planning. We honestly can't thank Emily enough. She truly went above and beyond the call of duty to make our wedding at the beautiful University Club one of the most wonderful, memorable experiences of our lives! The food, service, views, central location, and ambiance were all A++! We highly doubt there is better value for a wedding in SF than the University Club. We are encouraging our other friends to get married there so we can relive our wedding experience as guests ;)

J L.

Yelp
The University Club was a wonderful venue for our wedding due to its amazing staff, unique space and location, and high-quality menu. As many reviewers have rightfully mentioned, Yvonne was such a wonderful partner in helping plan and execute our wedding there, and our wedding planning process was comparatively stress-free due in no small part to her. The rest of the staff, such as the office and catering staff, are also super friendly and professional. The space itself very much fits the Nob Hill aesthetic, and has multiple spaces for guests to mingle after dinner, such as the dance floor, bar, and balcony, creating a very dynamic environment. As big eaters, we wanted to ensure our guests left dinner heartily satisfied, and the University Club really knocked it out of the park. We served the rack of lamb and half chicken, and folks still remember and rave about the food. As an all-inclusive venue, the University Club ticked off all of our boxes - space/location, food, and price point - and still managed to surprise us by the high level of coordination and execution by their staff.

Yelp
I had my wedding in May at the UClub. Like any bride, I was on a budget but still wanted an elegant venue with a view, and after interviewing several venue prospects in the city I found that cost, quality, and professionalism of staff was the best at the University Club (plus I got my view!) Our guests commented on how elegant and fabulous the venue was, how the food exceeded their expectations, and several of them went out of their way to tell me how much they liked Emily, the coordinator and catering manager. I cannot begin to describe how easy she made our wedding day. Everything was set up by her & the staff the night before (perfectly, I might add, without much guidance on my end at all) and the little things she did throughout the event tied it all together. A few people asked if she was available to hire for their own wedding :) I would choose UClub for her alone! Honestly, everything was perfect. Emily's ability to anticipate our needs and work within our budget was truly incredible. The view at night, despite some fog, was spectacular. I wish I could do it all over again!

Yelp
We had our end of year party at the University Club in November of 2012. I needed a place for 150+ members of my triathlon club (SF tri club) and this venue was great. The rental was affordable and we worked with the University Club to provide an open bar for 2 hours and cash bar after that. We brought in a DJ and photobooth and everyone loved it. The balcony has gorgeous views of the FiDi. I HIGHLY recommend the University Club. My only gripe as a planner was that I was not told until the week of (after having planned this months in advanced) that there is a Nob Hill noise ordinance and music needed to stop at an unreasonably early time. If you are a planner please make sure to ask about this so it doesn't surprise you. We ended up working out a solution but this could have spoiled the event as I believe the cut off time was 10pm which is far too early. If it had been mentioned to me from day 1 I would not have chosen the venue so I didn't appreciate it being dropped on me when it was too late for me to find another venue. I chose not to hold this against the University Club (I was working with Gail L.) in terms of my rating but think it is certainly worth noting. Other than this I had a 5 star experience at University Club.

Yelp
This review is in regards to The University Club as a Wedding/Event Venue. We would choose The University Club a thousand times over again for our wedding. The venue a gorgeous, classic San Francisco, venue with beautiful sweeping views and the staff is even better. Yvonne is a total rockstar. Everything, and I mean everything, was taken care of from planning to execution and throughout the entire night. I really can't recommend this venue, or Yvonne, more. Host your wedding or event at The University Club, you'll be so happy you did!

Yelp
My wife and I held our wedding reception here and it was wonderful. We had cocktail hour on the 4th floor, dinner on the 3rd floor and then cake and dancing back on the 4th floor. First off, the space itself is wonderful. Although slightly nondescript on the outside, the moment you step into the University Club, you are greeted with old-world charm - with lots of wood flooring and wood paneling (which, I might add, is all very well kept). You then take the very regal elevator up to the 4th floor for the cocktail reception. Upon exiting the elevator, you are greeted with one of the most stunning views of downtown SF imaginable. The room was set up with some standing tables and couches - but a significant portion of the attendees could be found taking in the view on the balcony. The hors d'oeuvres were wonderful - and our guests loved them. Once the cocktail hour was over, our guests were directed down to the third floor for dinner. The dining room was exquisitely set-up (the 3rd floor also has a wonderful view of downtown) and was the perfect setting for a very elegant sunset dinner. The only unfortunate issue with the dining room is that it was not able to fit all of our guests (we were expecting 169 guests - including the two of us) - so the small room next door needed to be used. While not a complete turn-off, having 40 some of our guests in a side room (which did have a view of the main dining room - but also felt slightly separated from it) wasn't ideal. Once everyone was seated, the food started to be served - and it was served promptly and professionally. However, a small note must be made about the food itself - because it was amazing. Going into this, my wife and I had heard from multiple parties that we should not expect delicious food on our wedding day because it is just not feasible to make good food for so many people (so quickly). However, the University Club proved them completely wrong - it was delicious! (And tons of our guests have complimented us on this as well) After that, it was back up to the 4th floor for cake and dancing. By now, the sun had set and nighttime had descended on the SF skyline - which made the venue even more breathtaking...and made the first dance feel even more special. All in all, this place was spectacular. The service and food were top notch. The decor was wonderful and the views were one of a kind. It definitely isn't the biggest venue, and the fact that the catering (and alcohol) must be contracted/procured through the University Club (rather than an outside vendor) definitely makes it more expensive than other venues. However, in this case, we truly got what we paid for and would, without a doubt, hold our wedding here again if we had to. Another point of interest is that, although many of our friends were from SF (or had lived there for a very long time), very few of them were familiar with the University Club. So, if you're looking for a venue that is beautiful, with great service, great food, and that is less known than its competitors, this may be your venue. Last but not least, we also want to highlight that our point of contact at the University Club, Emily was fantastic. She knew everything about her venue, the services provided, the food, logistics - so she was quite an asset during our wedding planning. In addition, she was extremely responsive and always happy to help. Needless to say, our wedding day was a success, in great part, thanks to Emily.

Yelp
This review is for: Location for Wedding and Reception Pros: Location, Location, Location. This place is a couple of blocks from the hotels on Union Square. The reception and wedding were held on the 3rd and 4th floors. The view was great. The food was good. The staff seemed nice.

Yelp
It took a few months to really think about if I wanted to write this review. I was never a bridezilla to begin with.I planned myself, had very few vendors because I bought my own linens, custom embroidered napkins, vases, etc. I know that a wedding won't be perfect. But I've planned enough parties in my lifetime for myself and others that I know it can "almost" be perfect. And I honestly think there was too many "miscommunications" with the Day of Coordinator here that I was not satisfied with the services here. Main mishaps: 1. It was very clear that I hated the painting at the end of the aisle and didn't want to walk down the aisle towards this , however I understood it could not be removed from the wall. Therefore, I needed to find an option to cover this painting that was horrific. I also expressed that if I couldn't find an option I would not have my ceremony there (on the 4th floor). I informed her that I had found a company for a giant paper flower wall and gave her the measurements. I specifically asked if this size wall could cover the painting and I was told YES. But of course there is no way to test this giant wall beforehand right? But... if you see my pictures of my wedding , the wall DOESNT cover the painting. You can see the TOP HALF of the painting above my giant paper wall. Not acceptable. 2. During my tasting for food which we did very early, March 2018 (for a Sept 2018 wedding) I informed her of my vendors- a photo booth and band and dessert table which was always part of my vendor list. So since March, those vendors should have had their place in the layout of the 4th floor. However, the day of my wedding how is it possible that there was NO ROOM for my Photobooth Vendor?! He had to use my Draping in the Foyer that was set up for my sign in table. It was clearly not MY responsibility to know that there was no room on this 4th floor for a photo booth. Again not acceptable. 3. The banquet order: Which compiles the final charges of my event. I had to look this over 3 times and correct her. Why did it take so many back and forths to get my order correct??? Example, number of chairs, liquor charge, etc. I've never had to do that with any venue before. 4. The morning after my wedding, she was in contact with my MOH regarding the vases that were left at the venue. She knew I was leaving the country for my honeymoon and had my MOH & Mother as persons to contacts. However, she never returned my Mom's call until almost a week after , which then she claimed they had a process of throwing away the 15 vases from my dinner tables. First of all, the black man at the front said that we could keep them there in the coat room and we were informed later he was wrong . But she still didn't contact my Mother until later. When I found this out on my honeymoon I sent her an email and instructed her to escalate it to her manager. Then the vases, were no longer thrown out and somehow they appeared again???!!! So my vases magically appeared after they were thrown away?!!! Completely unacceptable and this was my final straw and why I needed to write this. 5. When I inquired about my vases, she initially had claimed the Florist came by the night of my wedding to collect them. This was false because the Florist was hired to arrange the flowers but those vases were mine so the Florist would have never came back. In response to my email that escalated, her boss justified for her-- saying that when the people checked in "to pick up flowers" . She thought it was the florist. However, this was really the Giant Flower Wall being picked up. Ok but just another confused moment added to my growing list. Oh yea and by the way: I confirmed this venue for my wedding June 2017. I got married September 2018. Before my wedding my husband and I wanted to become members of this club since we thought it would be nice since we would be getting married there. I inquired and no one got back to me. I was later informed by her, that Dan hadn't gotten back to me because "he thought I wanted a discount to get married there. " Basically not knowing my wedding was already around the corner." Can you believe that??!?! I've heard about the hot waters this club was in before- financially. And I would expect the standard of service to be much much higher than I received since people are paying them a lot of money. She's also in charge of their Instagram page so I'm sure my wedding won't be making their page after this review Lol!

Yelp
I'm giving this place five stars because it was such a beautiful venue to have my wedding reception. My husband and I got married about a month ago having our ceremony at City Hall and then having our reception at the club. I was hesitant at first because the pictures on this app don't do justice on how elegant and beautiful it is. Last year (2019) in February I had an appointment with Yvonne, we met and she was really helpful and insightful. I was super nervous but meeting with her was a breeze. I read reviews and they were all great both about the club and Yvonne. When we said yes to the place and booked it, Yvonne was awesome and was responding to our emails however, to my disappointment it didn't last long. I had zero communication with her from August until December 14th, a month before my wedding and that's only because I emailed her. In between those months she never emailed me to check in or anything. I emailed her in May because I was going to be in the area to meet with my florist, I asked if we could set up a date for food tasting but she informed me that it was too early. Once I reached out to her in December I inquired about the food tasting and basically her response was that I'm not a local. We were never told that not being local would interfere with something like that. I felt like she took something from us, even if it's just menu tasting it's still part of the wedding planning process and she made the decision for us, not asking before. There was a lot of back of forth after that via email about conflicting information with the menu, room space/set up. Little random things that were not mentioned in the beginning and I'm sure could've been talked about during those quiet months that we did not communicate. I feel like 30 days before the big day the communication should be about final small things. Anyway, one thing she didn't cover was the sound system. I didn't have a DJ but was going to rent their audio and in between traveling to SF and preparing for my big day I also forgot to ask, it came to my mind the morning of my wedding as I looked through my checklist. I emailed her at 9am and didn't get a response until almost 1pm but by that time I didn't have my phone because I was already taking pictures so I missed her email and I almost didn't have any music for my reception. As I sat there in the lobby she told me there was some issues with the cables needed to connect to their system. It was a horrible feeling. I hate that things turned out that way because I read great things about Yvonne, even just recently. I'm not sure what happened with us but it was a crappy feeling. Overall, my friends and family cannot stop talking about the venue, the food and drinks. The food was so delicious and all the staff were so helpful and attentive. The decor was set up beautifully and it was so classy! Such an amazing place that I'll definitely recommend!

Yelp
Came for a wedding and also stayed 2 nights. Everything was perfect. This isn't a state of the art superstar place. If that's what you want go to the Ritz or something like that. This is an old line club. It's a warm clubby atmosphere that has been well maintained. The food was great. the staff was professional, the location is superb, the price is right. Solid in every way!!!

Yelp
A private club so you have to be a member. Somehow we snagged an invitation to a catered event. It was fine. Very old school charm. Beautiful view over the city from the 4th floor event space. Iunderstand they have some hotel type rooms you can rent but again, you have to be a member.

Yelp
Check in is at 4 PM. We arrived at 4:15 - and there was no hotel parking. However, the-man-at the-desk ( not a Concierge) said for $58++ we could park at the Fairmont across the street. He stated parking at Sutter Stockton was $1 an hour. (ha!) Well, it was in 1980...that was out first challenge. Room had paper thin walls and the Italian woman next door screaming on the phone was not entertaining. The pillows were like rocks. The towels were well used...one was torn. +Superb location. Rooms are rather dated and small -as one would anticipate. +Free drink chit for one. They make superb Moscow Grey Goose Mules. Lovely old school service. +Impressive Hors d'ouvres. Breakfast included was abysmal - we went across the street to impressive Coffee at the Fairmont. +$200 a night. It's all about location location location.

Yelp
We're so glad we decided to have our wedding at the University Club. It was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Here are some reasons why: -The planning and execution went really smoothly. Over the year leading up to the event, Yvonne answered our myriad questions and requests via email and during our walk-through and tasting. On the wedding day itself, everything went like clockwork. All the furniture, decorations, and food showed up in all the right places at the right times, and whatever behind-the-scenes machinery made that possible was virtually invisible to us and to the guests. - The location is superb. It's close to Union Square, but far enough to feel less urban and to offer some pretty iconic vistas along the adjacent cable car routes. -The views of the city skyline through the massive windows provided a magnificent backdrop to the ceremony, dinner, and reception. It made the whole event feel super open, and it was a special treat for our out-of-town guests. At times, it felt almost as if the dance floor was outside and we were floating among the highrises of FiDi. -The food was terrific. After hors d'oeuvres during the cocktail hour (potstickers strongly recommended!), we had a buffet dinner. Our guests loved everything -- from the salmon and prime rib to the roasted vegetables and cheese tortellini. They plated the appetizers and dinner for us, so we actually got to eat some of the food! -The space is clean, well furnished, and elegantly decorated. Between the main hall/dance floor, the balcony, the game room, the bar, and the library, there are so many great spots for guests to hang out in. Having a variety of areas made the reception especially vibrant and fun, and gave people plenty of options if they wanted to take a break from the dance floor. -Being able to have both the ceremony and reception in the same place, and being able to stay over and get ready in a room at the Club, was very convenient -- it allowed us to focus on the main activities and people of the day rather than worrying about transportation. All that said, there are a couple of areas for improvement: -Some of the guest rooms were outdated. While the beds are comfortable, the rooms can be loud due to cable cars outside or events (like weddings) upstairs -Parking can't be booked in advance and is first-come-first serve for an additional fee. Every time you want to access your car you need to check out/return a remote-control gate opener. Overall, the pros FAR outweighed the cons. If we could get married (to each other) all over again, we would absolutely choose to do it at the University Club!

Yelp
We had our wedding at the UClub last year. We loved the feeling and views it offered of SF. All of our guests kept saying how much they enjoyed the venue. The UClub has an on-site food and beverage program which is super convenient so you don't have to book additional vendors. They have a preferred vendor list which is very helpful if you don't already have a vendor you want to work with like DJ, lighting, valet service, etc. Also, depending how far in advance your wedding is, you can attend their yearly wedding fair to get a feel of the space and decor. We worked with Emily from the beginning when we first started looking at wedding venues and until the very end when we went back to the UClub the day after our wedding to pick up and drop off various items. Depending on the person, wedding planning can be fun or not. Either way, working with Emily made the experience fairly painless. There are so many details that she helped us keep on top of. A year later, our family and friends keep raving about the venue and their experience with the staff. Thank you Emily and the staff at the UClub for making our day so memorable!

Yelp
My husband and I just got married at the University Club a month ago and had such an amazing experience. Emily, the head of catering, was phenomenal to work with. The food was out of this world good, and the entire staff was so professional and helpful. We would get married there ten times over!

Yelp
I held my 125 person wedding at the University Club of San Francisco in September 2018 and I was very impressed throughout the entire process. We compared about 15 other SF/Bay Area venues and chose the UC because it has vintage charm and is reasonably priced for what you receive. Another important factor was the food, so we arranged to have dinner there before booking, because good food is extremely important to us and we were trying to satisfy guests from two very different cultures. I think we chose right, because our guests also loved the venue and the food (both the cocktail hour food and the dinner entrees). Guests commented the bar was well run and the drinks (especially our speciality cocktails we requested the bartenders serve) were really good and strong. The event itself was well run, and our venue coordinator (Yvonne) was on the ball and responsive to my many phone calls and emails in the days leading up to the event. Yvonne did all of the day of coordination with multiple vendors and oversaw the set up and take down of decor, chairs, flowers, cake, photobooth, DJ, etc. My only criticism was that it seemed like a couple tables got their dinner entrees much later than others. I'm unabashedly type A and hard to impress, but I am truly happy with how the event went and that my guests really enjoyed themselves. If we still lived in SF, my husband and I would probably join the club as members because we liked it that much. I've uploaded some photos (photo credit to LOVE + WOLVES CO) in hopes they will be useful inspiration for future brides and grooms.

Yelp
My husband and I got married at the UClubSF, and it exceeded both of our expectations (and the expectations of our guests)! It has only been one week, and we have already heard rave reviews about our wedding from our guests. We could not have imagined a better wedding experience - from the venue space itself, the delicious food, the smooth planning process with the venue coordinator included in the booking package, and our coordinator's high-quality vendor referrals. The venue space itself is unforgettable with its prime location and beautiful night skyline of SF. The venue space alone, with its historical feel and beautiful antique library, made our wedding so special and incredibly memorable for all of our guests - for visitors and local San Franciscans alike. Paired with the wonderful food and great wedding coordinator we worked with, we really could not have asked for a better wedding experience for ourselves and our guests! We chose to plan our wedding in only 6 months. Yvonne, the wedding coordinator at the UClubSF, did a wonderful job fielding our many questions and making us feel at ease undertaking such a big project in such a short timeframe! We had no idea what we were doing and didn't know any people in the wedding business. Having a wedding coordinator as part of the venue package was key for us! Yvonne was very open about venue pricing and gave us wonderful recommendations for vendors and saved us a lot of time with her high-quality recommendations. We could not have been happier with the photographer and DJ she referred us to (Sandra Fazzino Photography and DJ Jeremy Productions, respectively)! She also provided very timely response to our many questions and kept amazing track of all of our detailed requests! Our guests are not only raving about the venue, but also about the chef's cuisine, which was absolutely delightful! My husband and I are foodies, but booked the UClubSF thinking more about date availability than about the venue's food. We were a bit worried about this as we approached the tasting, but for naught! The resident chef at the UClub is incredibly talented and makes amazing, delicious food! Our parents and we were blown away by the delicious and beautiful presentation of the food at our tasting. I had to seriously wonder what I was going to order for our big day because each of the meal options were stellar. Our guests all loved their meals, too. One week after our wedding, we have already heard our guests say that it was one of the best weddings they have ever attended (and this is coming from older family members). They loved the food, the ambiance, the view, and the experience. My husband and I loved it even more! We could not be happier with our experience and would recommend the UClubSF to anyone looking for a unique, memorable San Francisco wedding that provides high value for the cost! Thank you to the UClubSF and Yvonne for a wonderful wedding experience that exceeded our expectations!

Yelp
I have to laugh at the 3 people here who complained that the University Club is "at the top of this big hill!" Welcome to San Francisco, kiddies. We've got hills here. This one's called "Nob Hill". If you don't like our hills, Lodi is back that-a-way, and don't let the door hit you on your way out. I also have to laugh at posters who say that the decor is "retro" (no, it's antique; there's a big difference), or "stuffy". There is no shortage of sheetrocked, fluorescent-lit nightclubs for you to enjoy South of Market (or better yet, in say, San Jose). But for anyone with an appreciation for things of quality that were meant to last, the U. Club is an oasis of civility and charm in a city that's losing more of those virtues every day. The building is a century old, and it's been beautifully maintained. Its brick beaux-arts facade is just like that of say, the Bohemian Club, the Metropolitan Club or The Family; three other great private clubs in the neighborhood. Its location is actually better than any club's except the Pacific Union: a block from the summit of Nob Hill, and equidistant between Chinatown, North Beach, the Financial District and Union Square, for those with the ability to walk 6 blocks (or take a cab, or ride a cable car). The interior is just beautiful, with turn-of-the-century paintings, antique sporting gear, fresh flowers and so on. The two huge balconies overlook the Fi-Di to the east. There are squash courts and a full gym for the athletically-interested, and a large library for the intellectually inclined. There's an excellent billiards table, and plenty of very comfortable club seating. And for those in search of a proper cocktail, the bartenders on the 4th floor bar, mixes 'em up right. If, on the other hand, you're wanting a "slippery nipple" or some other alcoholic novelty, keep right on walking. At least it'll be downhill. And did I mention that cell phones are not allowed to be used anywhere but inside the two (very comfortable) phone booths? Do I need to tell you how nice it is to not be forced to overhear people's private phone conversations? Or how rare it is to have a place to go where the loudest thing you may hear is a live jazz trio in the next room, or the sound of the ice cube in your cocktail cracking? That in itself is worth the price of membership! No establishment can be everything to everyone; it would be foolish to attempt to be. The U. Club does what it does -- and coincidentally, what its members desire -- exceedingly well. What it does not bother to do, its happy members could not care less about.

Yelp
Weddings and Events are not where the University Club's money comes from - it comes from the members, so clearly they put them in highest priority. They are unprofessional and rude, upholding antiquated ideals for a Good Old Boy's club. Small examples: *The wedding I coordinated had a rehearsal the day before. The on site Coordinator - Gail - would not let us set up the screen being used in the ceremony so as not to disrupt them members using the lounge - during our allotted rehearsal time. *apparently in the contract it says the music has to be off by 11pm. This was not brought to our attention, and then we were threatened by the police being called if we did not turn it almost all the way down at 10pm and off at 11pm. They would not bring the contract out to show us. *The club would not allow us to park 1 vehicle in their parking spot in an ally - late on a Saturday evening - for fear a member would want to come and play squash. We paid A LOT to rent that space, they could have let us park there for a few hours. *The club has a dress code for their lounge. We were at no point informed of this, and then not allowed up to the lounge for not meeting the requirements. *The staff is all female and all attractive, presumably to be pleasing to the members. They are neither helpful nor friendly - just attractive. We had a really rough experience doing a wedding there. The space is beautiful and the serving staff was friendly and helpful, but reception we received from the management was so bad I would never recommend this place to anyone. Judging from a lot of the other reviews, we are not the only ones.

Yelp
I imagine the University Club to be the sort of establishment where they still won't allow women or minorities when they are not whoring themselves out for private parties. I suppose that I am basing that entirely on the decor, but who's going to stop me? I went with some fine folks for their company party , a casino night held at the University Club, but I just can't think of many positive things to say about the place. The staff was "nice" but that is all I can offer in the realm of compliments. Food was slow to arrive, the fish getting cold in the ten minutes before the chicken arrived, and after ten more minutes, the lone vegetarian at our table begged the rest of us to start eating. Her meal came out eventually. The small pile of bland rice and recently thawed vegetable medley did little to enhance my dining experience. I had only half eaten my hospital-quality mahi-mahi when an over-zealous server snatched my plates away and the dessert was tasty, but kitchy with it's cable car chocolate wafer and peppermint wheel. On the way to the craps table, the elevator shuddered and heaved for about five minutes before deceptively re-opening onto the same floor from which we had entered, and the woman at the front desk gave me the evil eye upon entrance and exit, despite my dapper attire and disarming smile. I would like to thank the people who hosted me for their charming company, free drinks, witty banter and hours of faux-casino entertainment, and I apologize if I was too blind to see whatever it was that enticed them to throw their party at the University Club.

Yelp
I am a week away from my wedding, and am having the reception at the University Club. I must say that Barbara, the catering director, has been absolutely amazing throughout the entire planning process. From special diet accommodations (one guest is vegan), to recommending great vendors and helping with etiquette/guest issues, she goes above and beyond what you would think a catering director would be willing to do. Pricing here is fair as well. When searching for reception locations, I noticed that most places hike the prices of food, rental, etc for weddings. The University Club didn't do that at all! My wedding is priced the same other private events, which is great. Also, I must mention that they do indeed have vegetarian options for wedding menus (this relating to another review I read). All I had to do was ask. And no, its not in puff pastry, but is a spinach souffle with smoked mozzarella, and is pretty tasty. So, if you are looking for a beautiful reception spot with history, beautiful views, and fair prices, you should most definitely consider the University Club. So far, working with everyone there has been a great experience, and I'm looking forward to the wedding!

Yelp
*This review is for the University Club as a venue rented for a private party* University Cloob is pretty fun. I for one am a huge fan of random old skoool kitcsh, which this place has in frickin SPADES! Also, it must be said that it is a perfectly nice place to throw a large (150+) formal event. I absolutely LOVED the creaky old elevator. I was sure to bring 2 drinks with me when I went in, just in case I got stuck. The creaky old bartenders did a good job also, even if they did run out of champers! THAT was a travesty. HOWEVER. The crowning glory of the University Club? The Library /Cigar Room. I sat in it and waited for Chuck Bass, but he never came. Maybe next year?

Yelp
I came here for a private event and was blown away by the place! This is the real deal old school San Francisco affair. I half expected to see Bogey running around looking for the Maltese Falcon. We made a beeline for the third floor (hey, there was free wine up there) and were greeted by a beautiful ornate room that would serve as the ballroom for the night. The room opened up onto a balcony with breathtaking views of the financial district. We later got kicked off the balcony for being out there during the last song (apparently the manager thought it was too late for outside time). The library, full of important leather bound books and stocked with cigars and leather chairs was the stuff Ron Burgundy's dreams are made of. The bar was enormous, and I loved that on the walls there were portraits of beloved bartenders from times past, all sporting dour expressions. All in all a wonderful venue, and I hope we use it again next year.

Yelp
We just had our wedding here! We were thrilled with the venue, and so were our guests. Here are things they complimented. -- Everyone said the food was fantastic, and it was. This is SO crucial. The club does the catering, so you don't have to worry about bringing someone in. And the chef and staff worked with us to create dishes tailored for our wedding. Also, they offer the best vegetarian meal option anywhere, as far as I'm concerned. I ordered it, and I'm not vegetarian. -- The ambiance. It feels old-timey, and everyone loved that. If you're getting married in San Francisco, may as well do it someplace with character, right? -- The view! People loved the view, and they loved the little balcony off of both the reception area and the dining room area. -- The staff. Multiple people have told me that the club staff was super nice and polite. So that's what stood out to our guests. In addition, here are some things that my husband and I loved. -- We had the whole club to ourselves. There was no other wedding chasing us around the building. So, for instance, guests didn't have to hurry up and finish their cocktails so somebody else could get married in the cocktail area. -- Lots of cute nooks and crannies for photos. Also, very easy to get the obligatory cable car wedding photo, since it's at the intersection of two cable car lines. -- They provide linens, plates, cups, etc., most of the chairs you need, (at no charge of course), so you don't have to run around renting things. Which, seriously, who has the time for that. -- There's no crazy business of "OK, it's 11 pm, time to pack up the dishes and candles." They are very civilized about set-up and take-down issues. Great place. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Do you just love San Francisco's cable cars? Does the ding ding ding of the trolley warm your heart? Why not bring the whole experience with you back to your shabby room at the University Club. You can enjoy the rumble of the cable cars passing beneath your window and the shriek of the brakes right in your room on Powell St. You might want to pack some ambien for your stay. You'll be tossing and turning on your stiff foamy pillow and pulling your smoky quilt over your head to drown out the street noise. As I was checking out, my arms full of bags, I asked the front desk where I might dispose of the remains of my bitter weak complimentary coffee. The front desk suggested a trash can outside on the street. Thanks guy! One star added for the good location.
