A Vancouver Island Road Trip of Crisp Wines and Gigantic Trees

"During a dinner of local mussels served in the restored farmhouse at Unsworth Vineyards, our server explained what makes the region's wines unique. The focus is on unorthodox blends and newer varietals, he said, developed for a coastal climate. Wine traditionalists might raise an eyebrow, but one sip of Allegro, a bright white, had me convinced."

The surrounding area and the grounds for this winery are really pretty. They are currently under construction for what looks like a new storage area for all of their barrels. Unfortunately, their restaurant was closed so we went into the tasting room. This is a bit of a different tasting experience than I am used to with other wineries. You have to sit down and order, a certain tasting flight. I expected to have the flight laid out in front of me in nice little glasses but they give you one glass and serve you one very small taste at a time. It’s hard to explain but it’s not the most efficient way to do a tasting, and I felt like I was doing more waiting than tasting, the girl that helped us out was really nice and friendly. The wine was OK and it was a bit pricey for what we got. I’m glad we stopped and tried it out, but probably won’t go back again unless they change this serving set up. It wasn’t very busy and this way of serving took a while so I can’t imagine what it would be like if the place was full.

The grounds were nice with patio seating overlooking a pond. We went for a tasting, but their only affordable tasting had 3 whites a rose and a red, as someone who doesn’t like whites, I hoped to substitute any of their reds, but they were unable to. My friend shared his red with me (as he wasn’t a fan of reds) so I had a taste in the end and it was good, but I was surprised that they mostly had whites in the tasting. My other friend had a lemon and birch soda as he was the dd and he wouldn’t recommend it.

Such a fabulous experience here yesterday. Party of six started with wine tasting and small plates, paused and walked the grounds, followed by dinner on their patio. Top notch service, amazing food and flavors, spectacular setting. Thank you to the Unsworth family for sharing their piece of heaven with our family. We truly appreciated our experience! We will be back. Some of our group from Washougal, WA, others from Texas.

We can’t say enough about Jennie's service and our scrumptious meals. This is a must go to for anyone in the area. Thank you Jennie and all the staff, well done!!

The wines we tried here were divine. We reserved for the wine tasting, and got to sample 5 magnificent wines. The staff there were pleasant to talk too, were very knowledgeable about the wines being sold here, and even started offering guests blankets to stay warm as it was very windy that day. I give a thumbs up for their awesome customer service. You can also apply for a membership to get discounts on their products. Overall, it's a very clean and calm atmosphere away from the busy highway and businesses. You immerse yourself in a nice patio decorated with umbrellas and a pond with a small waterfall nearby. There's also a restaurant across from the wine store. Ample free parking is here, too. I recommend trying out their wines, and even got myself a bottle of the Charme de l'ile.

Lovely afternoon lunch at the restaurant. Small mix up with online reservation system but it was resolved and we were seated quickly. The patio ambiance is soothing and relaxing (and indoor ambiance in the winter is cozy and inviting). Wait staff were friendly and attentive. Food came quickly. We had pork belly and the pasta special with the recommended wine pairings. Absolutely delicious (but I’ve never had a bad meal here). I appreciate the portion sizes. Not too big, making food waste unlikely, but certainly enough to satisfy….and maybe leave room for dessert. Dessert was delicious and the Drumroaster coffee was brewed to perfection. It was nice to head over to the tasting shop after the meal and pick up a few bottles of wine for home.

High-quality food and wine with great service. There are plenty of seating options depending on the weather. It's a relaxed setting in a rural area, so grab a glass of wine, a snack, and unwind. There is also a great tasting area with a small pond.
