Fukudaya is located about 10 minutes walk from the main onsen street. But the Tourists Information Center is right across the road. It is a historical building with an addition of new wing building.||The reception staff speak a little English which is already very helpful. The only one elevator is a bit small and guests may have to wait for a while. Our room is big by Japanese standard, though a bit dated. The thermostat only provides on and off option, you can not set the temperature, so you have to turn on and off to make the room more comfortable.||The hotel provides a free welcome drink at the bar on the top floor of the new wing. The bar equipped with a juke box providing old songs. The outdoor public onsen is located on the same floor, with a nice view of surrounding landscape. The only restaurant is also located in the new wing. Both the dinner and breakfast is very nice, especially the abalone, the mini fondue and the sushi.||The family onsen is a really exceptional place where the onsen water has a strong sulphuric smell. So one can deduce that the onsen water is real. In fact in Unzen you can see hot spring and smoke nearly everywhere.

Such a lovely hotel with a variety of options for bathing and high quality onsen water. The water is sulphuric and looks milky. You can also book a private onsen easily by asking at the desk. Everything is clean and towels are readily available. You will be so su-be su-be! The rooms are huge! A fresh coffee machine is there with English translation for the instructions. The beds are comfortable. They provide everything you need. Kaiseki is well presented, fresh and delicious. Cooking the live abalone was a unique experience that I do not want to repeat. Nevertheless, all the other food was perfect. We especially enjoyed the theatricality of the sashimi, presented on dry ice. Local ingredients are centre-stage but there's an element of fusion in the meal (e.g cheese fondue). All dining is in private rooms apart from the teppanyaki option.

I stay with Fukudaya alone but I enjoyed my stay so much. Firstly, the food is wonderful, they really did a art of cooking with quality food. Private onsen is also the highlight, room is in japanese style with modern design, Staffs are all friendly and willing to help although I don't speak good Japanese. Will definitely stay here again

Great Ryokan to spend time in Unzen. The service is friendly and attentive. The rooms are a bit dated but well maintained. The hotels layout is a bit confusing, but they work hard to help you not get lost. The food is amazing and deserves 6 stars. Don't miss on eating here during your stay. For the onsen, there are 2 great outdoor baths and 2 indoor baths. At my time of stay it wasn't crowded and I had the bath for myself most of the time.

Based on the traveler photos, and generally positive reviews, my wife and I booked a non-smoking room for one night in mid-April that included dinner and breakfast. Unzen has a lot going for it: the jigoku are interesting, the national park has good hiking, the view if you take the cable car from Mt. Nitta is great, and it's an easy drive to Shimabara to take the ferry over to Kumamoto. My recommendation would be to confirm that your room is reserved in the new building. Our room on the top floor of the old building was dated and really in a quite poor, worn condition. Cooling the room in April was a challenge, and I can't imagine what it would be like in the summer months. The room next door was a smoking room, and the air from that room vented into our room. The staff were all quite nice. The onsen/rotemburo were OK, but nothing special based on the many other baths we've experienced in Japan (on this month-long trip or on previous long vacations in Japan). The dinner and breakfast were also just average. So our stay was a disappointment, especially so given that the room price with full board wasn't inexpensive. ||||To sum up, I'd only book this hotel if nothing else was available in Unzen, and then confirm the room was in the new wing.

The place is beautiful, the staff is nice and the bath will makes you feel like in a dream. You can also rent motorized bicycle and get to the Rope way in 30 minutes easily , there were no taxis available that day but it was finally a good luck. Riding on the quiet road with the great view was a lot of fun. With the Jigoku nearby, it’s just perfect!

It was an comfortable 40-minute drive from Shimabara Port to Unzen on a drizzly misty Wednesday afternoon. Fukudaya is easy to pick out in this small mountain resort being the tallest-looking. We found making reservations directly on the hotel website a little tricky so resorted to a booking platform. However a request for the new premium wing could not be entertained so we settled for the older main building. ||Negative online comments of the old rooms seemed unfounded as they were very clean and neat - yes, there were some very minor wear and tear issues but nothing so serious. Our rooms #305 & #306 were small but well laid out with a western bed area and a tatami style sitting area. The prefab bathroom is equally compact but fully equipped with all the conveniences. ||Things we loved about Fukudaya:|- warm helpful welcoming reception & efficient valet service|- private dining in the new wing and tasty meals for both dinner and breakfast |- the relaxing indoor & outdoor hot spring baths|- comfy yukatas and jackets being the regular dress code in the hotel. |- the roof top bar (new wing) with the 70’s juke box||We will not hesitate to return!

Stayed with the family. A quite traditional ryokan with 4 different baths that rotate between men and women daily. They are famous for their milky water, and the modern bath on the rooftop of the new wing. Rooms are quite spacious and well-maintained, although the ones in the original building are showing their age. Try to request for one in the new wing.||||Dinner and breakfast are served at one of a few restaurants in the ryokan (not in room), although staying guests get to use the private rooms. The food is exquisite, and probably the best we had on the trip.||||Service is top notch, and they give you small thoughtful farewell mementos in your car if you are driving.
