Malta: The Country of Half-Neglected Buildings

"I sat watching the harbor from the serene Upper Barrak Gardens, which had fewer people than the lower gardens." - Matthew Kepnes

This place is beautiful, not sure why it took me so long to find it but definitely a must. They have a cannon show at 12pm and 4pm everyday which we conveniently missed both times we were there despite being in the vicinity. The Xmas markets were on at the time so it was a pleasant atmosphere. Parking nearby in the car park but spaces are small.

⸻ 💥 Saluting Battery – Valletta 💥 The cannon firing at the Saluting Battery in Valletta is absolutely awesome and a must-see! It’s a brilliant glimpse into Malta’s rich history and naval traditions, brought to life with precision and ceremony. The setting overlooking the Grand Harbour makes it even more impressive – you can really feel the history echo through the city. Definitely one to add to your list when visiting Valletta! However, I do urge you to arrive at least an hour before the midday and 1600 cannon salutes because the crowds tend to gather early, and you’ll find yourself jostling for a decent view. The views from the gardens are worth a visit alone! The surround area has a really nice vibe to it as well.

Great fortress and a beautiful old Valletta. Salute battery remains an attraction - be there at noon. Historical place with a strategic location at the bay and the middle of the Mediterranean Sea and short distance to North African coast and Italy.

Excellent site to see the Grand Harbour of Malta. Peaceful place of flowering beauty to quiet the mind. At the overlook you can witness the Saluting Battery-traditional firing of a single canon at Noon and 4pm daily. It is impressive and loud! The firing was once used to welcome and set time for vessels in the harbour.

This is definitely our highlight of the holiday! Especially if you're staying in Valletta this is simply a must see as it is a free attraction and absolutely breathtaking, it is so pretty and well kept however does get busy at Saluting Battery. There is a cafe at the top which is good for snacks and drinks and there are a lot of seats available. We visited end of May and it was getting quite busy and the weather was very hot in the day time so maybe give it a visit early to avoid crowds but it is stunning!

Upper Barrakka Gardens offer outstanding views over the Grand Harbour. You see the Three Cities, passing ships, and Fort St Angelo from a high, open terrace. The gardens feel calm and well kept. The historic cannons add character and give a strong sense of Malta’s military past. The Saluting Battery is worth timing if you are nearby. Seating is available and shade helps on warm days. A must visit spot in Valletta for photos, history, and a quiet break from the streets.

Watched gun fire two times the first time from the balcony and the second bought the the ticket downstairs and it was the best decision ever. They explain about the gun and show everything. The guy who did our presentation (forgot hid name sorry) was so funny. Also gun fire standing close to it has a whole new effect like the whole ground shake under us. Recomend paying 3euros and also dont forget to donate while leaving because they dont get help from goverment.

The views are undeniably spectacular, offering unparalleled vistas of the harbour. The major drawback we experienced was the ascent. We failed to find the Barrakka Lift and ended up taking the steep, sloped walkways. If you suffer from back pain or have trouble walking downhill/uphill for extended periods, I strongly recommend confirming the elevator's location and using it. Without the lift, the journey up (and down) is quite difficult. Maybe lack of signs!
