On the Grid : Upstairs Downstairs Home

"Yes, it’s named after the British sitcom. This antique shop has been on Charles Street since 1992 offering an eclectic collection of antiques ranging three centuries from Federal to Mid Century Modern. They also carry more current New England artists' works. A little something for everyone." - JSGD

Google
I love this shop. About 80% of the furnishings at my Boston home are from Upstairs Downstairs. There, I’ve been able to find a mix of new and old (antique or vintage) items. The owner, Laura, is extremely knowledgeable and friendly and has a sophisticated and elegant taste. I can’t recommend this store enough. For those heavier items, they also ship and deliver. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this is a MUST SEE in Boston.

This is a wonderful gem of a place. Their collection is always so interesting, and it seems they have a bit of everything! I have bought three things here. One was an absolutely beautiful Greek Revival lamp which I study and read with every day, it has certainly enriched my life. The other two were two incredible paintings by once-local artist Niki Farrell. There are numerous other treasures at this shop, and any lover of wonderful antiques is sure to find something they love here. The staff are wondrously nice and helpful - I do not understand what a previous reviewer meant when they said they had a bad experience.

Google
We recently stopped in to Upstairs Downstairs on Charles St and found some prints and a small rug for our home. If you haven’t visited in quite a while it’s worth a stop back. The owners are helpful, welcoming and fun! The items are thoughtfully curated and include a nice variety of price points, styles and types of decor. Pop in to find one-of-a-kind items you can’t get online or at the major furniture stores.

First off the owner is extremely knowledgeable and helpful for all things antiques. I stop by here on a regular basis and am always taken aback by the expansive collection of art and furniture. I recommend anyone passing through the Beacon Hill area to stop in and take a look. 10/10

Google
Upstairs, Downstairs is a fine shop on Charles Street beholding a unique assortment of objects not to miss while in Boston. I have been a shopper at UD for 3 years and have picked up great trinkets and memories along the way. At my last visit, I found the photographed item as a letter opener. I was ecstatic that a big "hunt" of mine was found. After trial, this knife did not work as a letter opener nor soft cheese knife. On my returning visit to UD, admittedly months later, I had hoped staff to be open to accomodate an exchange of store goods to equal value (I had original receipt). I spoke to the owner and there was no accordance to be had. Upstairs Downstairs is strictly a Final Sale policy shop, so shoppers beware! I don't envision a return to 69 Charles at this rate.

Google
What a charming find! The staff was very welcoming and friendly. The store was full of fun and beautiful items. I found the perfect memento of my visit to Boston - a painting by a local artist for my home. I love that there is a mix of new and old. I look forward to visiting again to see what wonderful treasures they have to offer!

I’ve been a customer for eight years and I love the eclectic mix of everything from local contemporary art to vintage sterling to second hand rugs to country French to antique American sideboards. They do a great business so things are constantly going in and out and everyday you never know what you’re going to find. Upstairs/Downstairs is a real signature shop on Beacon Hill and local residents like me love to drop in and shop here. WFA

Yelp
This is one of my favorite stores and I haven't been there for a while, but since it's the holiday season something called out to me with their decoration. Very nice things with prices that are matching with the value and the quality of the vintage items. if you want well crafted high-end items, come here. It's very inspirational for somebody like me who likes beautiful things.

Yelp
I just had the pleasure of visiting upstairs downstairs Antiques on Charles Street. The owner sophistication and good taste in art work, home furnishings and table decor means that there is something for everyone. I love this store and would recommend it highly when you visiting Beacon Hill. There is a something special fir everyone in the store at all different price points.

Yelp
I love shopping here because 1) they have an incredible selection, and 2) the owner and staff are the kindest, nicest people. Great prices, too!

Yelp
My wife and I visited Upstairs Downstairs today and were really impressed with the selection and prices. Laura and the rest of the staff were incredibly helpful and responsive. We ended up picking a few really great pieces to help furnish our new apartment and were very happy with our purchase. And, in the time of COVID, everyone was wearing masks and they provided complimentary hand sanitizer (even multiple options!) which made us feel very safe. We can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Upstairs Downstairs is a go-to stop to make anytime I am in the Boston area. I always find unique, special items that match my college student budget. Laura and Joan have assured me in shipping items to my mother in New Jersey. You must stop by this hidden treasure in Beacon Hill!

Yelp
Love this cozy shop which contains all kinds of surprisingly affordable treasures. No, they are not all antiques, and there are a few too many tea sets for my liking, but there are some really nice finds in here. and despite the address, it's actually not too pricey. You'll find the usual generic, overpriced art work mixed in with a few lovely prints and paintings. You'll find old photographs of family reunions next to a still life done in rich oil paints. Some nice furniture but this is earthy, country style- nothing high end. There's sterling silver mixed in with silver plate, nice quality lamps and some divine scented candles. The space meanders way into the back of the building so keep on going. You may find just what you need. Worth a look if you are a collector or just poking around hoping to find the perfect item for your mother in law's next birthday or an old friend's wedding.

Yelp
This is my favorite antique store I have ever been to. The owner is very unique and kind. Her products are very high quality and they describe what antique is all about. This place has wonderful music and a great environment where you literally want to buy everything in the store! Very relatable to Target, where you basically want to purchase the store. LOVE!

Yelp
I'm a repeat purchaser here. Look for good deals (no, really, I KNOW it's Charles Street, but really... ) on tables and lamps. Also an occasional decorative doo dad. Mostly traditional wares, but I've given myself the challenge of a doing my new place in a well edited mix of high and low, modern and not, a la Elle Decor, while doing the reduce/reuse/recycle thing and all on the cheap. This place works!

Yelp
Always something interesting to be found at this store! Different areas with different themes help when thinking through how you might change up your own place. The owner has a keen sense of design, especially when it comes to decorating and fabrics. Prices are competitive, worth checking out if you are looking for a unique gift, a painting or a special piece for your own place. Smaller scale furniture is here, a plus for those living in tiny spaces!

Yelp
We were wandering around Charles St looking for an antique bar cart for our apartment, and happened upon one in this place. BUT it was almost double what we were hoping to pay. We told the woman working what our price range was and she offered to call the owner to see if she wouldn't mind parting with it for less. The owner said she was happy with our offer and was glad for it to finally have a home. The piece is beautiful, exactly what we were looking for, and we didn't have to overextend--couldn't be happier! One small tip, I'm not an avid antique shopper so I'm not sure what is normal, but when we got it home we noticed it was really dirty (probably booze from the 60s that was never cleaned off), but it was hard to see until you were up close and personal because of the finish and all the things that were on it for display purposes in the store. In the future, I would definitely inspect more closely and ask them to clean it or knock a few bucks more bucks off for hour we would spend scrubbing it down. However, we were so happy with the service and the quality of the cart that I would still give this place 5 stars.

Yelp
Sometime last month I came across Upstairs Downstairs Antiques in Boston and have been back several times. Laura C., the owner, is friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, and never pushy. She has even opened the store for me on off-hours to accommodate my schedule. The store has a varied collection of both low- and high-end items and everything in-between. Because they are well priced, most things tend to turn over quickly. Even better, the store is animal-friendly: my dog Simon looks forward to getting a biscuit every time he's there, and there's always a water bowl out for him. I'm a veteran of antique stores all over greater Boston and am happy to recommend Upstairs Downstairs without reservation.

Yelp
Upstairs Downstairs Antiques remind me of a British TV series I used to watch in England. It offers a wide variety of antique furniture, used furniture and vintage furniture which includes eras from Victorian to to-day. The ambience and themes are set based on the antique items. You can find anything from a small unique display item for a gft , to a stunning Mahagony dinning table. The ladies are very freindly and helpful. Amazing service.

Yelp
First--it's an easy shop to browse through--kept clean & tidy, with pieces easy to see. Some stores are just so dusty & piled high with 'stuff.' Service is very very nice. Laura, who owns the shop, is a sweetie & is almost always willing to negotiate a price for an item. No hard selling; which is a relief. I go into Upstairs/Downstairs for interesting pieces for formal dining. Bought a fabulous silver & glass salt & pepper/oil & vinegar carrier. Odd & gorgeous. Bought several silver trays here, compote glass, ... They have some wonderful formal table top pieces there. Do walk down the stairs & take a look. There are, of course, the kitchy paintings & weird bric-brac. But, that's what makes it so charming. The last time I bought a few things, I didn't have much money left in my parking meter.... So, they wrapped them beautifully, I ran & got my car & wouldn't you know it, the sales clerk was waiting OUTSIDE , with my bag so I didn't have to double park and risk a ticket. Really nice women.

Yelp
My teenage daughter and I have visited Boston regularly ( and Beacon Hill in particular) since 2003 and this little shop on Charles Street continues to be one of our favorites. Without fail, Upstairs Downstairs always has an interesting collection. We've fallen in love and taken home several pieces that we can 'carry on' the plane home - like the set of flow blue English porcelain dessert dishes; the crystal salt & pepper shakers, the pair of hand-painted tea cups 'decorated in Hong Kong' and a lovely old Eurpean engraving of a young girl which now hangs in our Bermuda living room. Not everything in the shop is of consistent quality, but there is enough here to make a visit worthwhile.

Yelp
I shopped for the first time on Charles street this past Saturday and had a wonderful experience at this store. I was looking for something very specific (desert wine glasses) and owner Laura Cousineau was so lovely. She presented several beautiful options and I ended up with a gorgeous set of glasses. It was a wonderful experience and I will definitely shop there again!
