On the Grid : Uptown Theatre

"One of the oldest theatres in the city, Uptown Theatre opened its doors in 1916 and is a Minneapolis landmark with its 60-foot vertical "UPTOWN" tower and balcony seating. Since the 80s the theatre has featured the best in independent and foreign films, as well as screening cult classics on weekends, including monthly showings of Rocky Horror Picture Show." - Teagan White

Never had such a wonderful experience with concert event staff. Took my 12 year old nephew to a show and everyone went above and beyond to make sure every kid there had a fun and safe experience. The woman assigned to balcony section 104 at the Aquabats show on August 6 (didn’t catch her name) was amazing, getting us ear plugs and a show poster. The venue itself is great but the staff helped create an unforgettable first concert for a very excited kid.

Easily 4 or 5 star venue.. but the security and check in process is probably one of the slowest I’ve ever been apart of.. show started at 8 and doors posted to open at 7.. people were still being let in at 10pm. Absolute joke of a process getting people in. Do better. The photo was taken 96 minutes after doors open.. people at the end waited another 60 minutes easily to get in.

We had an extremely disappointing experience at the Uptown Theater on November 21, 2024, and even worse follow-up customer service afterward. My husband and I purchased balcony tickets with assigned seating for the Yelawolf / J. Michael Phillips show specifically to avoid long general-admission lines. We had previously attended a show at this venue in October and had a great experience, which is why we felt confident purchasing tickets again. Unfortunately, entry to the venue that night was completely disorganized. Doors opened late, scanners were malfunctioning, and security procedures caused massive delays. By the time the main act began, the line was still wrapped around the building, and many ticket holders—including us—were still outside in cold weather. We waited for nearly two hours, monitoring the line and speaking with security, and ultimately missed both the opening act and most of the headliner. At that point, with no clear indication that we would even get inside and only about an hour of the show left, we were forced to leave despite having valid tickets. What made this situation worse was the response afterward. When I contacted the venue to request a refund or resolution, I was spoken to rudely and told, “Why do you think we owe you a refund? You still could have gone in the show.” That response completely ignored the reality of the situation—that the venue’s own entry issues caused us to miss the majority of the concert. We did not choose to skip the show. We were prevented from attending in a reasonable timeframe due to poor crowd management and technical issues. The lack of accountability and dismissive customer service was extremely disappointing. Based on this experience, I would strongly caution others before purchasing tickets here, especially if you expect assigned seating to mean smoother entry or if customer service matters to you.

I loved this venue! It's smaller which I like and has close parking. It was easy to get up close to the stage if you come early, and the staff was always on top of things in a friendly manner. I definitely hope to come back and see more shows here!

Fun venue. Good sight lines. Had a great show watching Wilder Woods. Bathrooms are on mezzanine (up) or down to the left of the front door. A good place for an intimate show. Sound system is solid!

I have been to 2 very different shows at the Uptown Theater since its conversion to a music venue. Amigo the Devil, and Deltron 3030. The theater does a great job absorbing the vibe of the performers and customizing the experience to suit. Amigo the Devil was stripped down, perfectly lit and vocals were on point for sound. Deltron 303 was like being in the movie House Party, but instead of Kid N Play, it was Automator and Del the Funky Homosapien! Loved watching movies here when I was younger and am so happy to be able to enjoy the building in new and exciting ways.

Nice clean venue. Need to figure out their security though. Waiting in line for an hour and 20 minutes for a show that isn't sold out is a serious issue. 2 Stars for good bookings and cleanliness. -3 for security and drink prices.

Google
i got to the venue one hour after doors opened. with a tremendously long line. i usually show up late because im not going to wait in line when it’s cold outside, but that just does not work here. we were able to go eat for an hour, and come back to there still being a line, two and a half hours after doors opening. this seriously needs to be worked out because i have never had any issues getting into venues in a reasonable amount of time with even longer lines.
