Good things. AC worked perfectly. African-French woman at the front desk was lovely. Lovely! Bed was decent. Had a balcony. Bad things. Could not stand up in the shower. Had to crouch. No shower curtain. Rooms are tiny. Balcony kind of dirty. Dated and depressing hotel. Everything seemed dark. Depressing street. Bring some light into the hotel! Only reason for 3 stars is the woman at the front desk. Otherwise, 2 stars. In fairness, most, but not all, of the hotels in this area were drab and dreary.

I stayed in superior double room. It was incredibly small! Just enough space to walk around the bed. No heater in the bathroom made my shower rather unpleasant. TV with no BBC or other English news channels. Continental breakfast had the poorest selection I have ever encountered, even as for French standards. Generally unhappy with the visit. This was my sixth hotel in St Etienne and definitely not to recommend.

We've stayed there just for the night before the football game between Switzerland and Poland. They have been real good hosts. Recommended us good spots for having dinner and the next carpark without beeing asked. ||We've booked the room with short notice. Booking, check-in and check-out have been very easy and without any problems. ||The only point i would have to criticise is that I was not able to stand inside the shower as the room was just under the roof and so it was a bit to los to stand in this side of the bathroom. ||But as we just wanted to stay for one night and we enthusiastically looked forward to the match, we didn,'t care about much.

I stayed in the Cheval Noir during the Euros in June of this year.||||I arrived at the hotel to be greeted by friendly staff who were very helpful with regards to location of the hotel and main square/stadium etc. Turned out to be very close to the main square and bars, 30 min walk from stadium so happy with the location.||||Room was basic and the decor looked like it needed a touch up but this didn't bother me as it was just somewhere to sleep and shower before moving on in the morning. Very clean room, good shower facilities. My view from the window was the wall of the building next door, again didn't bother me but may bother others.

Excellent hotel for providing a break while travelling to Spain. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Our room was of a good standard and we enjoyed the breakfast in the morning. Parking for the car in a city was a plus as we are both in our 70s.

Very friendly and helpful staff - not every hotel offers this kind of service. The bathroom needs a bit of renovation and fungus cleaning. Pretty nice lobby and spacious garage. Really ok. for a short stay / break from the travelling.

When I entered the hotel, my gut reaction was to turn around and run. Shabby, run down, strange smell. The receptionist (owner?), however, welcomed me heartily and opened the garage, which is conveniently next doors. He then made me enter the smallest elevator I've ever used to go up to the 2nd floor, where a nice surprise awaited me. A complete renovated room, nicely done, very clean and a shower with an enormous shower head. I couldn't wait to try that one out! Apparently they are renovating top down, when it will have reached the entry/lobby/bar level, this hotel will be a true find, for a good price in the center of St. Etienne.

Booked a group of friends. All agreed, location was best, in the middle of town. Lots of restaurants around, easy access to public transportation. The rooms were all different, some larger, some smaller. Not super clean, some hair visible. Left over food in the room fridge. Very friendly owners.
