Where to Stay in Christchurch When You Visit (Updated 2025)

"I found this lively, social hostel to be a fun place to meet people — it has a bar with some of the cheapest beer in town, a large kitchen, a big common area with a fireplace for movies or pool, thick mattresses (though no privacy curtains), lockers, and plenty of outlets in the dorms; it’s one of my favorite hostels in the country." - Matthew Kepnes

The 7 Best Hostels in New Zealand (2025 Edition)

"This modern downtown hostel has friendly, knowledgeable staff, a huge well-cleaned kitchen, and plenty of communal amenities including a pool table, fast Wi‑Fi, laundry, parking, a community bulletin board, movies, and comfy couches. Bedrooms are cleaned daily and the beds are adequate for a night’s sleep; my only gripe was a shortage of showers on my floor and the surprise of unisex showers when I walked in only wearing boxers." - Matthew Kepnes

Our two-night stay in Urbanz Queenstown was extremely pleasant! Each bed had its own personal nightlight and outlets and a curtain for privacy, though the curtain didn’t go past the bunk ladder. The bedding was super comfortable and towels were provided. Toilet paper wasn’t always available in all of the bathrooms. The showers were a decent size and there were hooks and shelves for your belongings. The hostel location is pretty central to the city which is very convenient and walking distance to the botanic gardens and nearby shops. At reception, we were advised of some parking spaces which were free 24/7, which was pretty nice. The wifi was pretty bad in all areas of the hostel, and the layout is confusing because there’s no singular staircase that takes you to all the floors, you’ll need to weasel your way around to make your way to the kitchen. Reception isn’t always staffed, so if the sliding door is unlocked during the “open” hours, the hostel isn’t very secure as you can access almost any part of the hostel without a key card once you get past reception. The cost for the two nights we stayed was reasonable. The kitchen was well stocked, absolutely beautiful and had an abundance of space for both dry and cold storage. I’d stay here again!

Had a great stay here, the best kitchen I’ve ever seen in a hostel. Large social space with comfy sofas and great beds with curtains. Exceptional friendly service from Matt, and thank you to Nikita who kindly helped me with my bags when I checked in.

Room was simple but ok for the price. I arrived half hour before check-in time of 2:00 p.m. after flying international and wasn't allowed to check in until 1:55 p.m. Room was quiet and I was able to sleep well. Two blocks from The Rydges Latimer where my tour group met the next morning so a good location. No light over the bathroom mirror so hard to see when shaving. (I found this fairly common in New Zealand.)

Pretty positive experience from the 2 nights that I stayed. The hostel is huge, spread across to floors with a bit of a weird layout. Large social space downstairs, kitchen, dorms, bathrooms upstairs. In terms of location it’s fantastic, it’s an easy walk into the city. My only real complaint was that it was quite dirty. There was dust across the windowsill and on my shelf and the kitchen was a mess. This is most likely due to having so many people use it. There was some noise through the night as well but nothing unbearable.

I stayed here for 3 nights in Christchurch and it was chill. Here's my in depth review of the hostel. (TLDR: I recommend it for its location) 📍 Location The hostel location is good and located near shopping, food, and attractions. If you are arriving by TranzAlpine train from Greymouth (like I did) it is a bit of a bus journey to get there, but doable. There are several convenience stores around the area, but I would recommend going to Pak‘nSave or FreshChoice, a farther walk, for more selection. 🔒 Design & Security The hostel is huge and has a somewhat confusing floorplan. However, the reception and common room are spacious. It also has comfy couches, a large TV, a pool table, darts, games, etc. I even saw they had a bar by reception and lots of tour brochures. It is also secure, with a key card to get into the building after hours and to get into the dorm rooms. 🛏️ Dorm Rooms The dorm room was decent size with: - Privacy curtain - Lockers beneath bunk - Shower towel provided - Wall outlets, light, and shelf in bunk - There are also some hooks on the bunks My dorm faced the street and it was moderately noisy while sleeping. I could hear voices on the street 3 stories up. The dorm doors are loud when they open and close shut. There must also be some nightlife nearby since I heard people coming in late into the night. Comfy beds, but if you’re a light sleeper the noise could be distracting. 🧼 Bathrooms The bathrooms closest to my dorm were large and fine. Lots of toilets and showers. 🍴 Kitchen The kitchen is huge and well-equipped with plenty of utensils, pans, and fridge/pantry space. There’s so many stovetops so you should never have to wait to cook! 🗣️ Social Atmosphere & Services It seemed fairly busy while I was there. They host social events 3x a week, but I didn’t participate. They offer laundry, the lounge has a Smart TV so you can watch whatever you want, and there is plenty of seating in the dining room. 🎉 Overall good value for the price. It is really well-located to what you want to see in Christchurch. You can easily walk anywhere, take a scooter, or use public transit. ⚠️ Only complaints: It is a very large hostel so it can feel overwhelming to be surrounded by so many people at once. Some street noise at night.

Receptionist very friendly and helpful. One of the best kitchens i have ever seen in a hostel. Rooms small, but clean. Nice common room with plenty of games, books and nice space for watching TV.

Friendly reception on arrival. Room with ensuite was not very clean. Hairs in the sink and shower and some questionable spots on the floor, and used q-tip on the floor next to the bed. Bed was good, and location as well. Kitchen was really good and spacious with everything you need. We did not use any other communal spaces.

I didn’t want to leave a negative review, especially for a place where I hoped to keep only good memories, and this is actually the first time in my life writing a bad review.🥺Unfortunately, it was an unpleasant experience. I really regret not choosing a slightly more expensive place, because the room condition was far below expectations. The toilet wouldn’t flush for hours, and even after I reported it and sent video evidence, the management implied I hadn’t said anything earlier, which was very upsetting. The room felt poorly maintained, and I couldn’t sleep because of constant toilet noise throughout the night. The listing also claimed to provide parking, but it turned out to be just a map of nearby free parking spots. Considering the price and the lack of proper service, I strongly recommend choosing another accommodation.
