On the Camino de Costa Rica, Stay With Local Families and Learn Cultural Lessons

"One outfitter, UrriTrek, customized my shortened itinerary with several car transfers so I could cover more ground, paired me with Juan “Juancho” Chavarria — an owner who has walked the Camino 35 times and whose encyclopedic knowledge of biodiversity and tight ties to community partners made him an indispensable guide — and offers 16-day trips on the Camino from $1,950." - Jen Murphy Jen Murphy Jen Murphy is an avid adventurer who splits her time between Colorado and Maui. She travels the globe pursuing passions that include surfing, snowboarding, cycling, and trail running and tries to ensure they overlap with great food and wine experiences. I recently completed the Urritrek expedition across Costa Rica, and it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Urritrek was organized, professional, and genuinely passionate about sharing the beauty and culture of Costa Rica. Their eco-tourism model aligned closely with my values. Our guide, Issac, was phenomenal—knowledgeable about the rainforest, wildlife, and local traditions, yet always attentive to each person’s pace and comfort. The trek itself was breathtaking—lush jungles, mountain passes, rivers, small villages, and indigenious land where we got to meet wonderful local people. It was challenging at times, but the encouragement from Isaac, the group members and the local hosts and people made it deeply rewarding. If you’re looking for an adventure that combines nature, culture, and personal challenge, Urritrek is absolutely the way to go. I left Costa Rica feeling inspired, strong, and grateful for an unforgettable journey.

Hiked the Camino de Costa Rica with Urritrek. They offer several options. I did the 14-day trip. I can’t imagine guides being more knowledgeable, friendly and helpful (Brandon es lo mejor!). Be prepared for varying accommodations along the way - some nights in tents, couple nights in hotels (or equivalent) and most nights in cabins/cabanas. It’s a life-changing experience to be with the people of Costa Rica, see countless flora and fauna, and be in several microclimes - you’ll never forget the wonder of being guided through the cloud forest. Pura Vida!!

I had the most wonderful full day tour specially catered for me by Andrés and his team (: I can't express how thankful I am for his accommodation to my personal request to hike Manzanillo and visit Punta Uva beach as a solo traveller who was staying in San Jose. Communication was brilliant with Andrés and he is highly professional - offering me personalised day tours of my interest and providing me a good and safe guide on the day of my tour to Manzanillo in Puerto Viejo. When I fell ill and needed to postpone my day tour to later in the week, he was very understanding and patient. My private guide, Eliseo, for the full day tour to Manzanillo in Puerto Viejo was brilliant! He was punctual, polite, knowledgeable about Costa Rican biodiversity, professional and good fun and company throughout the day. I strongly recommend anyone to get in touch with Andrés at UrriTrek if you'd like to create some unforgettable memories in Costa Rica! They specialise in long multi-day hikes like the El Camino De Costa Rica, and they're also flexible to accommodate to your personal hiking adventures [as they did with mine] where they're able to do so (: I'm very thankful to have UrriTrek make my first visit to Costa Rica a truly unique and magical experience! Muchas gracias! Pura Vida ♡

Hey there, adventurous amigos! Hold onto your hats (or should we say, hiking boots?), 'cause we've got a wild tale for you! We just trekked our way through the awe-inspiring 16-day Mar a Mar extravaganza along El Camino in the sizzling paradise of Costa Rica. Our fearless guides at UrriTrek and the one, the only, the legendary Ana made this journey one for the history books! From the very start, UrriTrek played matchmaker, hooking us up with accommodation soulmates, from cozy camping sites to heartwarming home stays and luxurious hot-water hotels. And oh boy, did we dine like royalty! Sink your teeth into visions of scrumptious rice and beans, mouthwatering plantains, and zesty chayote salads, all bursting with local flavors. And guess what? WiFi and cell service were always within reach, ensuring we could update our socials with a side of #adventuregoals and the latest trail gossip! Oh, and if you're worried about keeping those shirts smelling like roses (or at least not like a muddy rainforest), fret not – we managed to score three laundry stops along the way! If we could offer some packing advice, it'd be to stock up on electrolytes, snag a handy umbrella, earplugs, fancy headlamps with red lights, eye covers, trail shoes (trust us on this one), and a pocketful of 100k Colón’s for all the snacks, meds, and refreshing bevvies your heart desires. Now, let's talk about Ana – our guiding light in the lush wilderness! With twelve intrepid hikers, each one unique as the toucans we spotted along the way, Ana pulled out all the stops to cater to our special requests, display her local expertise, and prove that connections aren't just for the local avian population. After rocking eight Mar a Mar hikes, Ana's secret routes unveiled Costa Rican gems that took our breath away (figuratively, not literally – the air was fresh and plentiful!). From wildlife sightings to locating those postcard-worthy flora, Ana led the charge, showcasing that she's not just a guide, but a force of nature herself! When heavy rain tried to dampen our spirits, mud attempted to trip us up, and those mischievous bulls thought they could make us tremble, Ana flipped the script on all of them. Our group remained motivated, giggling like we'd had one too many energy gels, and eagerly reaching our goals, all thanks to her ability to turn every obstacle into a fun-filled opportunity! As we danced our way through the final steps of the trail, one thing was clear: Ana is the guide you want on speed dial for your next Costa Rican escapade! Trust us – when it comes to Ana, you won't just have a hike, you'll have a fiesta that'll leave you wanting more!

Andres from Urritrek is fabulous! We wanted to visit an indigenous village 2 hours drive from San Jose. He was the only trekking company that replied quickly and efficiently. He was always polite and interested to provide an experience in line with what we were seeking and he delivered! Our guide Isaac was amazing. So knowledgeable, so passionate about his country, about conservation, about supporting the indigenous communities and about the flora and fauna we saw along the way. We had a wonderful experience in the trek and the village and I would strongly recommend working with Urritrek, Andres and Isaac 👍😎

Ana Trujillo was our Uri Trek guide for our 14 day Camino d Costa Rica. She was an incredible leader and handled the group with grace, kindness and humor. She made sure everyone was safe and ready for each day’s adventure. Because of Ana’s guidance, our group had such a great time. Not only is she knowledgeable about the trail , Costa Rica, the flora and fauna but she know how to handle all the different personalities. Ana was well loved by all of our hosts - she is definitely a favorite amongst the families along the Camino. I feel so fortunate to have had her as my guide.

Our group of 16 people completed El Camino from coast to coast guided by Juancho over 13 days in March. The hiking was a wonderful and inspiring experience. We started on the Caribbean coastline through the jungle by boat and on foot, seeing an abundance of wildlife. The days that followed we hiked through rain forest and cloud forest exploring the different ecosystems, microclimates, diverse landscapes and cultural immersion. Trekking through the indigenous territory gave us a great insight how the Costa Rican families live. We stayed in many varied accommodation, hotel, lodges, homestead, cabins and camping. We ate Costa Rican food, which included rice and black beans, I did get to like them. It was a life changing experience hearing so many different bird songs, monkeys calling and the cock crowing from 3 in the morning. Our arrival to the Pacific coastline was most welcomed and swam in the beautiful ocean. The itinerary we were given prior to our booking was a bit misleading, it stated our walks were anything from 6 to 8 hours and with a height gain one day was to be up to 1165mts. Some of the days we seemed to have rushed on to our accommodation for our lunch time, I would have preferred to have had more packed lunches and a lunch on the route. We had other activities a few afternoons such as swim in the local river which was great, and seeing the coffee manufacturing being done. Juancho was an encyclopedia of knowledge which he shared with us, from the wildlife, birds, trees, flora and fauna. He immersed us in the culture and is so passionate about his country and the people. Thank you Juancho, I highly recommend you to other trekking groups.
