We went in December and there was almost no one there. There is a massive area where the canons were located and a rooftop walk... but you can't see over the walls to the water. If you exit the castle across the courtyard you can find stairs up along the walls. There must be a lot not accessible since we saw no living quarters.

Ursino Castle offers a rewarding blend of historical architecture and curated artifacts—ideal for those who appreciate medieval history and Sicilian culture. It’s especially suited to visitors seeking depth in a less crowded museum, but those expecting curated, modern exhibitions may find its layout and presentation modest

It was built in the 1st half of the 13th century, intended to be used as a defensive bulwark - mainly from sea attacks. Today it is filled with bits and pieces of amazing history, art masterpieces, an area you can see restorative work on paintings. It is divided into four parts: archaeological, medieval, Renaissance, and modern, with the Benedictine and Biscari Museum collections front and center. I believe this is a must see when you visit Catania. There is a partial view of Mount Etna from the top of the castle walls. On the day we were there, they were getting ready for a concert that evening, so it looks like they host special events as well. Could have spent more time here - was wonderful.

Castello Ursino is a fascinating medieval fortress in Catania, Sicily, built in the 13th century by Emperor Frederick II. Surrounded by lava stone and rich in history, it now houses a museum with captivating art and archaeological exhibits. The mix of Norman architecture and volcanic surroundings makes it truly unique. A peaceful, historic spot that offers insight into Sicily’s complex past—definitely worth a visit when exploring Catania.

6€ per person to get in. Sort of boring to be honest, paintings and sculptures but I really wanted to see and learn about the castle. The outside and the middle part is the best. Only two vending machines on the top floor with a small seating area. Bathrooms were disgusting!

Ursino Castle in Catania is a gem that truly impressed me with its unique history and architecture. Originally built in the 13th century, the castle has stood the test of time, even surviving lava flows from Mount Etna, which makes it even more fascinating to explore. The atmosphere inside is wonderful – you can almost feel the echoes of the past in the thick stone walls and ancient hallways.

This place is so good. Of all the time I have spent in Catania, I had no idea this place existed. It has great works of art and a ton of history; PLUS it’s not super crowded. If you’re looking for an enriching art museum experience and a little bit of history while you visit Catania, I would check this place out. The price to enter is only €6, which is a steal for the amount of art that you are getting to view.

Great place to visit just before sunset, the colors work well with the site
