"Heavenly Day-Hiking in Urupukapuka There are 144 islands in the Bay of Islands on the North Island of New Zealand , and Urupukapuka (the largest of them all) aims to please. Check out the island's website to help plan your day, which will be a fabulous and full day that includes a boat ride and a serious day-hike to and from either Paihia or Russell. All of the hikes finish with time on the hidden beach pictured here, before you head up your final hill to get back to the docks and catch your ferry back to the mainland."

This was one of the stops on our tour of the Bay of Islands. Beautiful island. I wish I had more time to explore it and go for the long walks. When you go to the top of the hills and look down , it's beautiful to watch the boats and the beach. The water is clear and a great place to play.

The biggest island located in the bay of the islands. Has accommodation, camping , walking tracks and a big restaurant and bar. There is kayaking and water skiing. Most tours stop here for lunch or go between islands. Recommended to stay 1 or 2 nights or spend the day here. Don’t have time if you’re part of a tour. The walking tracks go between easy to hard and steep. (Need good fitness to do).

The island offers a spectacular view, with its pristine waters reflecting the azure sky and framing the idyllic Bay of Islands. Nestled on the shore is a beautiful beach, inviting visitors to unwind in the serenity of this coastal paradise. The relaxing atmosphere makes this island a true escape from the hustle and bustle. As you enjoy the breathtaking views, you'll likely encounter some charming surprises – cute sheep roaming freely, adding a touch of whimsy to the landscape. Whether you're basking in the sun on the sandy shores or exploring the shoreline, this island is a must-visit in Paihia for those seeking a blissful retreat amidst nature's wonders.

Embarking on a cruise from Russell to Urupukapuka Island proved to be a five-star maritime adventure, offering an unforgettable journey to a haven of endless beauty and unique experiences. The island's pristine environment showcased a captivating blend of landscapes, from lush greenery to secluded coves and sandy beaches, providing a versatile backdrop for both tranquil relaxation and active exploration. Visitors were delighted by the flexibility to bring their own food or indulge in the offerings of the island's restaurant, while clean and well-maintained shower and bathroom facilities added an element of convenience and comfort. The option to hire a kayak allowed for a more immersive experience, allowing guests to paddle along the crystal-clear waters and appreciate the coastal beauty from a unique perspective.

Excellent facilities, great trees for shelter, plenty of water activities and walks. Very scenic Island. So much beauty! Easy to access and probably one of the more accessible, great for most. Children, families and oldies. Bring plenty of sunscreen, and maybe a hat!

This island is awesome because it's for everyone - hikers, campers, day trippers, family, etc. From Paihia/Russell, you can take a ferry ($50 return) to Otehei Bay. You can spend the day then go back. Or much better to stay a night or two to camp. I recommend walking to Urupukapuka Bay which is around a 15 minute walk from Otehei Bay and camp there. The view is better and there's a lot less people. There's a toilet (and an area to shower I think) Bring your camera. At night we saw the milky way as the sky was clear. In the morning you can hike, there are a bunch of hiking trails on the island you can pick from not very challenging as there's not a lot of ascent. Back at Otehei Bay, there's a restaurant - they serve food and BEER!
