A centre of excellence in professional military training occasionally from a naval perspective, usually from a global perspective. It is a college and a community. Everything is there. The gym is state of the arts, there is a club/restaurant the officers club, a naval exchange shop where military and general goods are sold to military personnel at no tax. There are several halls. Everything is smart and businesslike. Training is at various levels and various perspectives. For both US and international students.

Distance learning, Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies is an excellent way to learn maritime service craft and prepare your career for the future. Takes committment to complete but well worth the journey. The instructors and leadership were very professional and a pleasure to work with. Do this early, for you will need both the knowledge and education to succesfully compete at the senior level. Best of fortune in your pathway to acquire this degree from a nationally recognized and prestigous institution.

Premier academic institution and the navy's home of strategic thought. Also, some pretty great views of the water...beware the weather!

Great school to attend. Also, it is only a lot of reading if you do all of the reading.

Yelp
Enjoyed my visit here. It's air conditioned and nicely organized. Lots of American historical artifacts. The gift shop is fantastic. They stock a variety of items from coins, neck ties, wine glasses and mouse pads, to name a few. Friendly service all around. A must see!

Yelp
Get a history lesson. I just happen to be in the east coast for classes and decided to check out the base. I'm a glutton for military history. Since you read my USS Albacore review, you know. Located on the waterfront, near the main entrance to base this historic building has a beautiful view of the bay. It's like the Perisido, in San Francisco. Inside the three floor building, you're greeted with historic art and model ships. I learned a lot for the local area. I never knew RI was a recruit training ground, or torpedo assembly area, or about the U-53 sinking ships right off the coast. You'll read about our founding fathers creating the USN, how the Mariners started, the women's contribution to helping win the war, and submarine history. The last being my personal favorite. I took over 100 pic and videos of this place and through I won't post them all, you can see them personally at the NCWM. Overall five stars. Great place to visit if n the area. One drawback is if you don't have access to base you must get sponsored. Now excuse me, time to see what other treasures we have in this base. M

Yelp
We visited here on my husbands birthday & it turned out to be a fabulous weather day in February in Newport! It was sunny & about 60 degrees! My husband has always wanted to visit here so we took a trip this past week & we were not disappointed! I would allow about 2 hours to tour both floors of the museum. They have some beautiful models, artifacts & paintings on display. It was very interesting to learn knowledge about how the Naval Academy was actually located in Newport for a few years...having moved from Annapolis. Anyone that has a love of history & for the US Navy will definitely enjoy a stop & tour through here. If you're not military you will need to fill out an application prior to visiting the museum but the museum itself is free. The grounds are absolutely stunning with views of the Pell Bridge & the historic Naval Warfare College next door.

Yelp
A well-put together collection of the Navy in Newport, a gem that many don't know of. From the engineering of the first torpedoes to Naval leaders, to the evolving of the Naval War College and its think tank and wargaming capabilities, the exhibits here are useful, well-presented, and will make any history-minded person drool. Take an afternoon and stop by! NOTE! If you're not a holder of a military ID (active, reserve, dependent or retired) you need to reserve at least one working day in advance - though admission is free, for security purposes contact the above number and then stop at the Pass and ID Office outside gate 1 (main entrance, off the rotary) prior to proceeding in the gate.

Yelp
If you can get on base to see this, it's well worth the few hours to tour. This museum is well put together and offers tours led by staff that are very knowledgable about the history of the Navy and War College/Newport. You learn a lot in the time you walk around and get to see a lot of artifacts and models of ships from our pasttime. There is an "exhibit" of torpedos and their development through the 1900's which I really enjoyed. Afterwards walk on over past the arena to the O'Club or head out to town for some good eats. **If you are not military, you can still get on base to see this - just call ahead of time (at least one day) to get the proper security clearance.**

Yelp
Yesterday, on the first day of summer, I visited The Naval War College Museum in Newport, Rhode Island. I didn't really know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised especially by the amount of really good art they have there. Just big enough that you can do it all in about an hour and the location is stunning. Free of charge (don't see that too often these days) but you need to call and make a reservation at least 24 hours in advance.

Yelp
Great museum. Great museum gift shop. No advance notice required. Building and grounds are worth the trip. Have lunch at the o club by the marina. Love the place!

Yelp
This is a very small museum. Normally, for security reasons, you have to call a day in advance to make a reservation. Which they could have made more clear on their website. The museum has a few interesting model ships and some historical pieces but it took me all of 30 minutes to go through it at a slow pace. They really missed one of the greatest stories about the Newport Torpedo Station. The US Navy had to deal with defective torpedos (developed in the 1930's at the Newport Torpedo Station) for the first 18 months of the war in the Pacific. Here is a link to a great story of military engineering: http://www.historynet.com/us-torpedo-troubles-during-world-war-ii.htm/2 But they dont talk of it at all at the museum. I dont think that much thought has gone into the museum exhibits. One entire room is just a bunch of paintings of admirals. Boring! The US navy has so much history and this place was really rather dull. The dullness coupled with the security measure would explain why I only saw two other people when I was there.

Yelp
We went to the naval war college museum on a tour and think it is a great place to learn about the navy history in the Newport area. If you have a military Id it's easy to get in.

Yelp
Recommend you email a week in advance to get your vetting to get on base but it is a very nice little museum! The art collection changes every few months and the stories of the torpedoes are very interesting. Was surprised to see how many women played a part in the torpedo manufacturing during the war. A great relief map of what was once Goat Island! Enjoyed our visit very much and loved the model ships to look at! We needed some new sweatshirts and stopped by the gift shop since purchases help keep this little museum ticking!! The people there are all friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Discovered this little gem after a terrible visit to Fort Adams with one of my friends. We got through security just fine. However, we both already had background checks on file so that is what allowed us. Otherwise, it is recommended to call about a week before going down to get the background check for your pass. It is well worth the effort. The museum is in the original building for the Naval War College. The collections and displays cover the variety of naval history with an exceptional collection of artifacts, uniforms, model ships, etc. We did not have a tour, we actually didn't see a docent after our first 10 minutes there. Based on the reviews about how small it was we didn't think we would spend much time there. Becuase of the quantity and quality of the displays and artifacts we spent at least three hours there. Every wall and stairwell had something in it, including the hallway leading to the bathroom. I would return here in a heartbeat if I'm back in Newport.
