Located on the east side of the George Wallace Tunnel on Battleship Parkway, known locally as "The Causeway", the USS Alabama (BB-60), known as "The Mighty A", is a must-see attraction. But to classify it as an attraction does not do it justice, as it is a piece of history. As per Wikipedia, "she was the fourth and final member of the South Class of fast battleships built for the U.S. Navy in the 1930s", and saw action in WW II in at last 4 separate campaigns.
The ship is permanently docked in Mobile Bay and is open for tours year- round. For being so old, the ship is very well maintained and is in pretty good shape. Much of the ship is air conditioned, which makes it very tolerable, even during the hot summer months.
The self-guided tour is clearly marked and pretty easy to follow. I highly recommend wearing very comfortable clothes and a good pair of tennis shoes, as you will be doing a lot of walking, climbing and descending if you want to see all that the ship has to offer, as there are only a few areas that are off limits. Climbing into the main gun turrets really gives you a feel for how cramped working conditions were for the WW II heroes that worked there.
The USS Drum (SS-228), a WWII submarine, is moored nest to the USS Alabama and is definitely work seeing. There is also a large air-conditioned hangar with military aircraft inside that is included with the price of admission. There is a really cool gift shop inside as well as "The Galley" if you want a quick bite to eat. However, I usually only buy water here, which is a definite must-have item while touring, as I prefer to eat at only of the restaurants on the Causeway. I've visited this ship at least 6 times, the last 2 with my son, and we never get tired of coming back. Can't wait to go again.
