The World’s Highest Lighthouse Isn’t by the Sea—It’s Hidden Way Up in the Swiss Alps

"Right next door to the lighthouse, this is the perfect place to reward the effort with dessert after a hike, train ride, or ski-in visit." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. It goes without saying that the view from our outdoor table at the top of the stunning Oberalp Pass was absolutely breathtaking. Surrounded by high alpine peaks and serene landscapes, it created the perfect atmosphere for a memorable experience. What truly surprised us, though, was how this cozy spot far exceeded our expectations. We had anticipated basic food and dessert options, but the friendly and attentive staff quickly proved us wrong with some fantastic recommendations. We started with a non-alcoholic grapefruit drink—a unique blend that stood out from the usual soft drinks, water, or alcohol. It was both refreshing and different—definitely something worth trying! But the real highlight? The desserts. The Cremeschnitte was homemade and offered a delightful twist on the classic Swiss pastry—beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. Then came the apple cake with ice cream, also made in-house and served so elegantly that we almost didn’t want to dig in. It tasted even better than it looked: warm, comforting, and deliciously unique. All in all, this place gave us so much more than the standard pit stop we expected—it delivered creative food, welcoming service, and stunning alpine views.

The apple fitters with ice cream was delicious 😋. Blueberry risotto was very unique, creamy, and cheesy, tasty.

This was probably the best food we've had from a midway stop on top of a mountain pass. We were blown away by both the excellent quality of the food and how well they were presented - the meats were all cooked perfectly, and the Spatzli/Spatzle was very delicious. We also tried the blueberry risotto, which we thought to be really unique in flavour.

Stopped here twice while skiing. We were all blown away by the quality and authenticity of the food, and I loved the Malfatti (homemade spätzli and gnocchi with creamy spinach sauce). The cremeschnitte was also delicious, and the location was perfect.

Stopped by here on my way home after a hike and was a bit pressed to catch the train. Two drinks and a piece of fruit cake fast and without much hectic - and got the rest of my cake wrapped up when I had to leave. Would and will come again!
