Are National Parks Closed During the Government Shutdown? | Condé Nast Traveler

"Suggested as an alternative to Arches, Utahraptor State Park is a state-park option that will not be affected by the federal government shutdown because state parks do not rely on federal funding." - Emily Pennington

Staying Active R A W.

Camped here in mid October. Site had both power and water for the trailer. Site was clean with covered picnic table. Checked out bathrooms nearby. They were very clean and had showers, which is nice if you need it. Both nights were very quiet. Nobody partying and far enough away from roads. Visitors center was cool with information on history of the area and dinosaur digs in the vicinity. Has a black and grey tank dump station on the way out, which is convenient. Would recommend this place. Just maybe not in the summer, if you don't have a trailer with A/C.

We stayed in the Utahraptor State Park the 23-28 May 25. The original intent was to join our other younger family members in the “primitive” area. However, to our pleasant surprise, the brand-new state park was celebrating Grand Opening that same week. As we are older than the other family members, the modern park sites with water, power, picnic table, nearby unisex bathrooms with hot water showers (10 units per camping loop), fire pits and sunshade shelters were much more appealing (to us) than the primitive sandy, rocky, dusty, thorn bush, high plains desert landscape. I am not being negative to the choices offered by the Park Service, as the cost per night was $15 vs $50 and many folks like “roughing it out” while camping. Good for those folks liking the primitive area. We were happy with the wonderful park settings and convenient location. The park location is outstanding for off-road vehicles as there are miles and miles of beautiful trails to enjoy. Should you need supplies, Moab, UT is just a dozen or so miles to the south on Hwy 191. We highly recommended this campground and excellent pricing, especially compared to the commercial campgrounds throughout the area.

Primitive campground review: We loved staying here. Info is sparse about the primitive camping. Here are some tips. 1. THERE IS NO FRESH WATER. This is crazy to me since they have water for the other campground. There isn’t a tap available for the primitive sites however. Haul it in. (Why -1 star) 2. Loops 1 and 3 have a pit toilet but Loop 2 does NOT. 3. Per the placard for your vehicle, the dump station IS included in your stay. There are also trash dumpsters. 4. The campground was quiet and sites were clean. Will be staying here again!

Never staying anywhere else when visiting Moab. This is the perfect spot. We used to camp here when it was BLM land as well. Far enough away from the highway to be quiet, dark sky with milkway views, clean and accessible bathrooms (not available on the primitive sites), and 10/10 visitor center. Activities on-site include 4x4 back entrance into Arches NP (aka skip the traffic), dinosaur footprints on site (4x4 accessible only), mountain biking trails, ATV paths…. Honestly, you don’t even need to leave to have a good time! The blue mountains surrounding the state park are a site to see! Highly recommend if you are thinking about it. Everything was amazing. The state purchased this BLM land because there was a meth lab, constant littering, and misuse (legal) use of the land. Totally understand why the state took it over to preserve the land and keep it safe for all. Only small recommendation is to put the lights surrounding the bathrooms outside on a motion sensor or red light when they aren’t in use. They are very bright at night and obstruct the dark sky as well as shine into your tent if you are tent camping. Almost feels like a spotlight is on you and they never turn off.

Utah raptor is a brand new state park and I can’t wait to see what all it develops into! They offer a nice, clean visitor center with information about the Utahraptor and Japanese Isolation camp. There is lots of opportunity for camping and OHV riding along with really nice, well maintained shower houses. I will definitely be back!

Congratulations on your New State Park!!!! After camping a week through Colorado we were excited to pull in and hear you had showers! Not only are they Clean, and have great water pressure some are handicap accessible! Say Hi to Chad from us… He’s the Large Hissing Beatle in the bathroom. Views from our campsite were amazing! It backs up to the Artches and yes that red rock structure is indeed the back part of Devils Garden! Yes it’s hot and you have to move your camp chair around your site to sit in the shade. You won’t be at the sight for long because there’s lots to do in Moab. For $50 a night we got a sight with electric and water and access to those amazing bathrooms. Take your kids inside to see an actual Dinosaus skeleton on display. Enjoy!!!

New build park. Shower facilities are impeccable. Find a spot close to them or drive/park. All new blacktop roads with even and flat sites. No site sewer dump but there's a double dump site at exit. I have a 36ft Class A with a Jeep in tow. Pullthry site was so large I had to back up!

Drove 6 hours and go here at midnight to camp at our usual BLM land just to see it was turned into a State Park. We dropped the fee off at the enterance and after 20 minutes circling the park realized all spots (of the 27 available) were taken. I understand making money off the camping for conservation. What I don’t understand is how paving so much land to accommodate giant trailers is better than the dispersed camping the site provided when it was BLM for the actual land. Another great spot lost. I don’t know who did the planning for this but this one is a fail 👎
