"The Ute Mountaineer in Aspen was, like many shops of its ilk, born of a love for being outdoors. In this case, it started as a dream between two friends who were climbing in Europe one summer, one of whom had already owned the Boulder Mountaineer shop. They opened the new store in 1977, and it's still family run to this day, in the historic Elks Building (once the Aspen Post Office). Their mission extends to the employees they hire, “the people who know and use the gear they sell,” and also to their community involvement: The store sponsors and runs several local races throughout the year, andhosts theBanff Mountain film festival."

Ute Mountaineer is a fantastic outdoor clothing store in the heart of downtown Aspen. We have shopped here a handful of times and always come out with good stuff!

Great service and selection. The sales staff wasn’t pushy, but were extremely active and attentive to everyone in the store. We rented snowshoes and they were as expected.

Crosby was super helpful and knowledgeable. Also, one of the few places in the valley that has reward points! Saved 90$ on pair of shoes and goggles were 100$less than at other retailers.

They have a great selection and I was able to get great advice from staff to find what I needed.

What an amazing staff, great selection of items you need and very reasonable prices to match! You will not find a nicer, more insightful staff than the crew at Ute Mountaineer. My wife and I received excellent customer service from my first phone call about renting gear with Alex to discussing hikes and gear needed in person with Evan and Alex. Their expertise of gear and the entire Aspen area is unreal and their willingness to share these insights with anyone is so nice. The ability to chat with Evan and Alex about anything from summiting a 14er to easy hikes around Aspen shows what culture has been created at Ute Mountaineer. My wife and I were shocked at how nice everyone on the team was regardless of what you happen to be buying or even how busy they happen to be. Any negative reviews about staff must be from some other store because what I saw multiple times over a few weeks was nothing but professional every single time. I have been to many outdoor stores around the world and never been more impressed than with Ute Mountaineer. Thank you for the amazing selection, good prices and for an amazing staff with great insight! Keep at it Evan, Alex and Ute Mountaineer team!

I bought a Kuhl jacket there in late November. I asked the man who rung up the sale about the return policy. He said that as long as it is 14 days within the sale date, tag is intact, jacket not worn, they can return it. I asked if it can be refunded to my credit card that I used to buy it. He said yes. I asked again and he yes again. 9 days later I returned the jacket with all the conditions met. The manager said he can not refund to original card, that he can only do store credit. I told him what the original salesman said. He said that something about the system wont let him do it, and that the first salesman is misinformed that it wasn't communicated to him that they cant do that. I don't understand the details of what he said. I don't need to either, I don't work there. We went back and forth, about how unusual this is for a retail store especially one that does as much sales volume as this one and made no progress. In the end I had to sign up for a loyalty program and give my email - which I don't like to do - just to attempt the refund. It still didn't work. I lost confidence in the ability to resolve this as I was told it would, and accepted store credit and getting some boots that I wouldn't have gotten that same day because I wanted to use my only option of store credit before they lost it, or screwed it up or miscommunicated about that too. For a store that does tens of thousands in sales at peak seasons times they should it together more. Either way I just want my refund to my card. I am a local of 21 years and have friends that used to work there and they laughed at my story and said they was no real reason not to give a refund to the credit card used for the sale.

Yelp
I have been spending my winter holidays in Aspen for several years in a row, and a visit to this town is never complete without at least one (or more!) stroll through "The Ute". On this most recent trip, the staff at Ute Mountaineer staff exceeded my expectations with great customer service and prompt delivery on their word. In spite of the usual craziness that happens in Aspen during this time of year, I was able to drop off a pair of Scarpa AT boots that had a warranty issue, with assurance from the management that the work would be finished much sooner than I would have thought. Ute Mountaineer had the parts to perform the repair in-house, and I had the boots back before I needed them next. They have a great variety of clothing from a fairly wide range of manufacturers, tons of camping + glamping accessories, the latest in featherweight equipment for aspiring ski mountaineers, an extensive range of maps, and a veritable library of outdoor activity-related books. Ute Mountaineer may be the only store of its kind in Aspen, but don't be fooled by any misleading Yelp reviews about this place. Nit-picky complaints and unrealistic, over-the-top expectations say far more about the bizarre, fur-clad goofballs that frequent this town over Xmas and New Years than it does about the hard-working staff at Ute Mountaineer. I'll be back again next year to see what new back country goodies they have in stock!

Yelp
I came into Ute today looking for a pair of shos. I was helped by a young red headed man named Sam that was extreamly friendly and helpful. He knew a lot about the store and how to find the right pair of shoes for me. Sam rocks!! thank y'all

Yelp
I bought a North Face Shirt camp in early June. At the time it was cold and rainy, so I didn't try the shirt on. It was my usual size in a "standard fit" on the tag. Brought it home for a self selected Father's Day gift. Too tight in chest and sleeves. Called Ute Mountaineer. It was beyond their return window and the did even offer store credit even though I will be back in Aspen for skiing. I know ONE shop never to spend money in again...

Yelp
I'm an avid five star giver, and while I do appreciate Ute, I had a balance of positive and negative experience. I found myself in a situation where I rented one of their bear cans and finished Four Pass Loop after hours. Theres no after-hours drop off or contact information. Not cool when you're renting gear and unknown things are bound to happen. Luckily, the bartender in the bar underneath the store was cool enough to return for me the next day, with a $30 dollar tip. What really takes off the star though is the pretentious and "too cool" vibe from the employees. Ain't nobody got time for that. Being kind and understanding is free.

Yelp
Great selection of items. It was also totally awesome getting sales associates who wouldn't smile, had their eyes on you (for potential shoplifting I guess), and also the bonus of them being totally aloof. Get over yourselves, and try and not act like working retail in Aspen lends itself to this behavior.

Yelp
I cannot believe it!! After 22 years shopping there. These peoples sold me twice , an electronic devices , witch has broken seal ( open box) for the full price, in the past year. When I return it, they tell me they give me a favor to take the open seal box back, because every electronic idem who walk out of the door are "FINAL SALE!!! I try to make the manager understand than , if they don't tell they customer it is an OPEN BOX, they should apologize and take the idem back, without any comments, if I don't want to buy on open box for full price!!. She basically tell me to go shopping somewhere else!! I will for sure!! Another Buisness going down in Aspen!!

Yelp
Rented back country skis and a split board for a birthday trip. The guy working the rental area (Matt) was incredibly short, rude and extremely unprofessional in the way he conducted himself in front of customers. I work in retail so I left thinking, maybe he had a rough interaction before we got there, trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. Fast forward 2 days later when I go to drop off the rentals. The same guy SNATCHED the skis out of my hand like he was mad at me. We had a great time on the mountain but I'll never give Ute Mountaineer another dollar of mine after my experience there.

Yelp
Fantastic items in the store but the staff are real bungholes. I felt watched and like I was a nuance being there in the store buying stuff. Won't be back to this location.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I visited recently to rent some snow shoes. We were immediately greeted by a friendly employee and directed to the rentals department where we were quickly helped by an equally friendly and helpful staff member who gave us all the info we needed, quickly processed our rentals, and was even thoughtful enough to inform us of the 1/2 day rate we were eligible for. Definitely where we'll return for rentals the next time we're in town.

Yelp
Today was my first time Skinning. Bridget was the most amazing person to set me up with all the equipment that I would need to make this an extremely enjoyable experience. She had the patience of a saint. She explained everything to me. She even took the time to make sure that the boots fit me properly. Bridget, thank you for making this a perfect day!

Yelp
The selection here is impressive but the employees I encountered were so unpleasant. With dozens of other stores just steps away, it's not worth it to spend money in a store where shoppers are treated like they are a bother. Top that off with the fact that they don't honor active military discounts, I'd rather skip over this place. These are two fixes management should take a serious look into.

Emily H.

Yelp
The staff at Ute Mountaineering are racist. I'm white and they're chill with me, but my asian friends always get harassed here. The staff follows them around and whenever they pick out an item to look at they're told "you have to buy that." Gross.

Mopey D.

Yelp
Great merchandise and selection. I could spend hours here, and frequently did. Unfortunately, the staff (sorry, don't mean to lump all staff together) seems bothered by us customers. After the sale, the attitude truly seems to be what can I NOT do for you. Rigid in "store policy", and it trumps customer satisfaction. I do my best to shop local. And I hope/ expect a good to great customer experience. The "good to great" seems to have become less apparent over the years. I returned year after year hoping a prior experience was a one-off situation. For me, I am on a run of bad luck.

Yelp
Aspen outfitters for the great outdoors. Big selection of high quality equipment for all those great things to do outdoors in Colorado. Staff are excellent and very helpful without being in the slightest 'pushy' or 'salesy'

Yelp
Really great store and very helpful staff. I came in here to get a pair of slip on shoes for my boyfriend after he got surgery. There was absolutely no pressure and they were extremely kind. I wasn't sure if I was going to keep the shoes as I needed to bring them home to him so that he could try them on and they said it would be fine if I needed to bring them back. The shoes were Jeffrey and they made his life much easier.

Yelp
They were so rude. I asked to use the restroom and they said "yes but you can't use it". This place is very expensive to be rude to customers. Go to Marmot, they are so much nicer.

Yelp
This store has great gear if you don't mind their even higher than even Aspen prices, little or no service and generally arrogant and rude and sales people! Since they have a virtual monopoly in town, perhaps they don't need to care. I have been a customer for many years but something about their staff's attitude changed when they changed location a couple of years ago. Henceforth I will avoid this store whenever possible.

Yelp
This store has awesome gear and the pricing is pretty fair. I called in advance and they had the binding I wanted and it was on sale. I asked about mounting and was told that it was $45 to mount. I asked why there was a fee since I was purchasing them at their store and was then told they could do it for $35. So I made the trek from Snowmass to drop my boards off. As soon as I walked in the door my eyes became wide with excitement as this store is pretty well stocked for it's size. I'm a gear addict so I was on a high. However, the issue came when I went back to pick up my skis. I must say that I have never paid $60.00 to have bindings switched out. So needless to say I was a bit shocked when told I had to cough up the cash. ($1.00 per minute was the reason given). Huh? Every shop that I have ever purchased bindings at mounted them either complimentary or at a discount. I would have at least expected some sort of attempt at trying to please the customer since I balked at the bill. I feel very much taken advantage of and will not shop here again until they get their shop under control. So I will shop online and stick to the shops where I know I'm not going to be taken for a ride because I am a woman. End of rant.....

Yelp
Oh Ute Mountaineer, who else would have guided my uncoordinated ass through winter sporting? I've tried downhill skiing and snowboarding once and I remember falling/cursing a lot. I wanted to try X-Country skiing and snowshoeing, but we weren't sure where we should go to do either of these things, so we went to Ute and inquired about the local trails. We originally wanted to go to the Maroon Bells, but I guess it's 6 miles each way to even see the Bells, and I'm totally uncoordinated and inept, so that idea was nixed quickly. The guys we were talking with were SUPER friendly and genuinely enjoyed their jobs, which was nice. They were clearly outdoorsy people. They advised us to snowshoe up Buttermilk, and buy a gondola ride up Ajax and X-Country ski at the top. We took them up on both their suggestions (and rented X-Country Skis from Ute) and had a great time. I still cursed a lot (and fell a lot X-Country Skiing), but we will return to Ute for any future rental needs.

Yelp
Well, I should have read the reviews before wasting my time. You'd think stores in the off-season would welcome a sale, not this one. When the credit card reader couldn't read the mag strip on my card, she pretended to enter the numbers manually, only to give up when the labor required to type my address exceeded her interest. Treated me very poorly throughout my visit. Worst I've been treated by any local store. I asked to see her manager. "Well, I am the assistant manager, soo...." was the reply. I always try to give the business itself the benefit of the doubt (being a manager myself) and assume bad behavior is an isolated problem, but I guess not in this case. I won't be back. PS this is the first review I've ever written, angered me that much.

Bill S.

Yelp
This shop has maintained its focus on first-rate equipment for outdoor and backwoods activities, including some that involve true adventure. So, this may not be the place for people who want only to look the part. (There are plenty of other places in town for that.) Staff know their equipment, the area, the dynamics of specific activities and the equipment needs for those dynamics. They are friendly-- I have not seen anyone on staff talk down to a customer, no matter what the question-- and helpful and efficient. I have seen some of the "knocks" in other reviews on the service and pricing but those seem to be from several years ago and I hope that whatever caused the problems has been addressed-- I expect that to be so because I've not experienced it or observed it.

Yelp
I would agree that some of the employees are indifferent, but when engaged you'll find they are not without knowledge. If you know what you want the selection is bountiful and their end of seasons sale is always a winner to beat the prices.
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
This is an awesome outdoor equipment store - sort of a Tiffany's for the outdoor set. They carry the best brands and, while the prices are up there, they are not out-of-line for this equipment. They had some really nice off-season sales.
google avatar

Raymond C.

Yelp
This place is awful. Period. Here's why: no respect for the costumer or their hard earned dollar. They treated me as if a day of unused tele gear was, unquestionably, not worth the refund for a day of unused gear. I pre-payed for a two days, and they said they would refund the money if I didn't use them on both days. When I brought the gear back a day early, they they didn't want to refund me, and it became a confrontation that left me sick in my stomach. I cannot believe these people would treat a customer so poorly over something so trivial.

Yelp
This is a fun shop if you're into mountain stuff. In some ways it's limited and in others it has an amazing variety when you consider Aspen's astronomical rents. It's also a good source of information. They carry about everything you'll need from ice axes to cliff bars. Their prices are amazingly fair considering where they are. I also find that most times the staff is quite helpful.
google avatar

Lynn E.

Yelp
Helpful. When a pair of vintage hiking boots imploded on a vacation hike the helpful staff got us outfitted with a new pair of light weight hiking boots and we were back on the trail ASAP. Thanks,

Emma C.

Yelp
It was my boyfriends first time camping and he went into the store not knowing what all he needed and didn't even know where to go. I think his name was Mike, helped him with everything! He made sure he had everything from first aid to a sleeping bag. Mike was very knowledgable about what he was doing and all the products he recommended to buy. We could tell he was a real hiker because he was even wearing a training backpack while working. He also gave my boyfriend a lot of recommendations about where to camp and good hiking trails. If you need any outdoor items, come to this store for sure
google avatar

Ethan J.

Yelp
if you see something you like buy as they will run out of the item .. i've learned my lesson .. taxes are crazy here but its Aspen ^_^

Yelp
l'm like to hike a lot and finding the right equipment is not always easy to find. This place is great for all of the little stuff needed for going way back into to high country. The selection of gear is great and if you do not see what you are looking for they can get for you. Over the year I have to say I have spent a lot of money in this store and the staff has always been friendly and very good at helping me find the equipment I need. Shopping other sore leaves me a little lost because I can not find the product I'm looking for or no one in the store knows what I'm talking about, simply put not his place. All I have to do ask and the people working take me to the section of the sore I looking for. I can only describe the staff as experienced out doors people. The shop reflects the expierence of the people running it. You just cant's get that kind of expierence and know what product to buy unless you are a person who spends lot;s of time in the great out doors.

Corey C.

Yelp
I ordered a pair of boots over 3 weeks ago, paying a $40 deposit, and never heard from them again. The first time I went back to the store they said that it was a company issue and the boots should arrive shortly. Another week goes by....still nothing. I returned to the store to cancel my order and they could find no record of the order, so so there goes my $40. They pretty much said sorry but since I could not find my receipt there is nothing we can do about it. I won't be shopping there anymore, a perfect example of why the internet is taking over, poor customer service, when customer service is the only thing you have to offer.

Paul G.

Yelp
A selection that beats much larger stores, particularly in BC ski equipment. Need a cable for your 1999 Tele bindings? They might be the only place in Colorado that has it.

Lee L.

Yelp
I've been shopping here for years and I have to say that the new space is fantastic. No more upstairs freezing your tail off shopping in the winter in the women's department or sweating profusely in the summer! The new redone "Amen Wardy Home Store." (God, I thought that some of that Amen, rude, follow you around the store, holier than thou would have carried over but - NOPE!!!) The staff that they have now is the best ever!!! Everyone is bend over backwards helpful. During this off-season's sale they went searching the basement for skis and bindings for me. You guys rock! It's nice to know that you are still always at home in the Ute.
