Vaidya Upahar Gruha – Pune, India - Gastro Obscura

"In the bustling historic part of Pune, an old-fashioned signboard swings above a restaurant door. As one steps into the establishment, one is instantly transported a hundred years back in time. Vaidya Upahar Gruha has been serving patrons delicious food since 1912. The atmospheric interior drips with vintage charm in the form of marble-topped tables decorated with artistic ironwork, antique mirrors, and classical old paintings adorning the walls. The menu remains largely unchanged since the 1960s. Even today, the owners continue to serve their signature dishes which they have perfected over the decades. Misal pav, a traditional Maharashtrian bean curry, is their best-selling dish and they have their own version of it, which has delighted patrons time and again. Their other victuals include pohe, sabudana khichadi, bhaji, kharvas, all of which are made from scratch with care. Know Before You Go This restaurant is located a short distance south of Phadke Haud Chowk, near Shaniwar Wada." - Vivek Gadre

People who want to know what exactly a misal is should be should try this Misal. This is the oldest place of misal & you can say its an historical Misal joint which ages 115 years & you will find the same furniture & setup still into use. All the things you have here are made fresh in house everyday. Let it be the Poha Chiwda Sample etc. This places is open at 7am. They serve the sample which is not red but yellow & have is again very unique. The sample here is unique & the typical red tarri types which you find this days at any roadside joints claiming to serve authentic misal. This still.remains a lesser known place but believe me this is the best misal & the proper way to have misal. Unlike the farsaan misal available in the town which has gain popularity among those who really have Zero knowledge about the actual ingredients. If you are a fan of Original Puneri Misal & havent tried VAIDYA yet than please go & have it.

One of the city’s oldest and most iconic eateries, serving authentic Puneri misal since 1901. This place perfectly captures Pune’s traditional food culture — simple, honest, and full of flavor. The misal here stands out for its unique Puneri style: medium-spicy tarri, crisp farsan, and fresh bread slices instead of pav — a trademark touch that regulars love. The flavor is rich yet balanced, not overly oily or fiery, and the portion size is just right for a hearty breakfast or light meal. The eatery has an old-school charm with wooden furniture, chalkboard menus, and a nostalgic vibe that makes you feel connected to Pune’s culinary past. Service is quick and polite, prices are extremely pocket-friendly (under ₹200), and the crowd is a mix of locals and loyal regulars. If you want to experience an authentic, no-frills Maharashtrian misal with true Puneri character, Vaidya Upahar Gruha is a must-visit landmark in the heart of old Pune.

Vaidya Uphar Gruha is a 100-year-old eatery located in the Pune area, and visiting it truly feels like stepping back into the old city days. The ambiance is simple and nostalgic, with a few shared tables where people sit together, adding to the old-school charm. The menu is extremely limited. When I visited, it was only misal being served. What sets their misal apart is the curry base, which is green-chilli oriented, unlike the usual red-chilli-heavy flavors found elsewhere. The misal includes poha chivda, long shev, potato, and a slight sweetness. The rassa, however, felt a bit on the thinner side and somewhat transparent, it could definitely be thicker to enhance the overall experience. The place is run by Joshi Kaka, the uncle owner, who is very actively involved. You’ll see him managing the crowd, calling out waiters, and personally taking care of people waiting in the queue, which adds a very personal and warm touch. A few important points: - The restaurant usually closes sharp around 11:30 in the morning - Avoid visiting on weekends, as it gets very crowded. - Two-wheelers can be parked nearby, but avoid bringing four-wheelers Overall, Vaidya Uphar Gruha is definitely a one-time try, especially if you enjoy historic places, simple food, and a unique green-chilli-based misal that reflects Pune’s old culinary roots.

One of the oldest food outlets in the heart of the city, Vaidya misal is a place known to very few.. Or rather only the real Punekars know this place.. They do have limited menu, however, their misal pav is delicious. This place is 150 years old and has that kinda aura. A must try for all the misal lovers out there.

I visited this place after knowing about it on YouTube. Misal was different and tasty. Never eaten such kind of misal. Misal lover should try this 115 year love place for Misal, kharvas & sheera. Potato bhaji was over fried and was not up to mark. Since place is old and kept in that way only so do not expect any luxurious things.

Amazing Misal with Authentic Old-World Charm! Finally got around to trying the misal here and it was absolutely amazing! The taste is authentic and has that perfect spice level. The place itself has a wonderful old charm that's hard to find these days, which really adds to the experience. It is a little on the higher side price-wise, but for the quality you get, it feels justified. Highly recommended for any misal lover!

Old world charm. A restaurant continuously operational for more than a century that in itself is legendary task. Limited menu. Just sit have some good snacks and chai from menu and back to work or wherever you want to. Simple right, that’s what these small food places are meant for. No frills attached.

११५ वर्षापासून ची जुनी प्रसिद्ध मिसळ.All the furniture is also old and kept as it is. Potato bhaji and Vada is also famous. Unique test of misal with bread. Not professional touch. They are preparing food items like home. With home made spices
