Vaidya Upahar Gruha – Pune, India - Gastro Obscura

"In the bustling historic part of Pune, an old-fashioned signboard swings above a restaurant door. As one steps into the establishment, one is instantly transported a hundred years back in time. Vaidya Upahar Gruha has been serving patrons delicious food since 1912. The atmospheric interior drips with vintage charm in the form of marble-topped tables decorated with artistic ironwork, antique mirrors, and classical old paintings adorning the walls. The menu remains largely unchanged since the 1960s. Even today, the owners continue to serve their signature dishes which they have perfected over the decades. Misal pav, a traditional Maharashtrian bean curry, is their best-selling dish and they have their own version of it, which has delighted patrons time and again. Their other victuals include pohe, sabudana khichadi, bhaji, kharvas, all of which are made from scratch with care. Know Before You Go This restaurant is located a short distance south of Phadke Haud Chowk, near Shaniwar Wada." - Vivek Gadre

The misal is not at all spicy but has its own unique attributes like green colour cut / rassa / sample , served with bread slice, poha , chivda and crunchy shev with prompt service. The atmosphere is major plus point its located in old vintage wada which has its own unique charm and it definitely takes you back to 1910s era. Traveling to this place is more enjoyable than misal , I took metro and got down at Kasaba metro station walked through picturesque lanes and reached there in 10 minutes.

One of the oldest Misal places in Pune ! It's said by many of the regular visitors that the taste hasn't changed for the last 115 years !!! The misal in itself is very homely and has a nostalgic factor which is further boosted by the old decor. which the shop has preserved ! A definitely recommendation for people who want to experience the old Pune !!!

The vaidya upahar gruha has finally been ticked off my list as an iconic pune eatery. Proximity to Kasba peth metro station made it possible. The ambience is an old world charm which may make some people nostalgic and others may not be too enthused by the old world looks. The service is prompt. Don’t get fooled by the green watery misal here. It packs a spicy punch. The flavours are not akin to a typical misal. I recommend dipping the bread slice in the rassa before you try with the farsan. There is no matki in this misal and they use a generous amount of curry leaves and patal poha chiwda to make this misal. The kharvas and batata bhaji are really good. I liked them better than the misal. Next time i intend to try the shira and mango daal. It is very affordable. Overall a good thing to try.

This place enchants you with a classic, rustic charm. Vaidya uphar hruh has entered their 115th year this month. The roof is held with closely supported T bars, you sit on a sturdy teak chair and a heavy table. The walls are adorned with at least 30-40 yr old frameless pictures and menu items on slates. The full menu seems to be written daily. The place has ample service staff to take care of a full house in a courteous manner. Beware! The service staff shall shut the main entrance around 11.25 am for new customers, so be there latest by 11.15 in morning hours. I loved the Kairi Dal as a side dish along with must have misal and it all ended with a portion of Kharwas(Colostrum). It gave us a sense of fulfillment after a mildly spiced misal. Misal - Tasted fresh, mildly spiced , filling. Kairi Dal - it's a side dish , freshly cooked dry dal with bits of raw mango and seasoned with tadka of curry leaves, dry red chilli, jeera. Kharwas - Rightly sweetened and refreshingly flavoured with cardamom powder, gives a mild sense of caramel sugar. I'd prefer this instead of caramel custard honestly. I would want to visit this place again for that welcoming smile on Mr Vidya's face on the counter as if he knows your parents and grandparents well. The overall experience makes the rest of your day pleasant.

This is very old and rustic hotel. As per the board's and locals this is the oldest misal serving hotels of Pune. Misal flavor is very subtle compared to all others. Their serving is also different as they add fried poha on top of Ussal mixture and the very thin and light gravy of boiled usal is served separately. One can either choose bread slices or pav along with misal. More than misal we enjoyed the Khavaras which was fresh and yummy

Unique misal served with green gravy, a delicious and different dish. They are serving this since 120 years. Also tried the Batata Bhajji served with green chilli chutney. Chai ☕️ served in a cup and saucer was very well made. Vaidya upahara gruha proved that a restaurant with very limited menu maintaining premium quality can servile for centuries.

Vintage place to try a unique style misal, a very different misal with a green sample but absolutely pack with a spicy. Currently in their 115th year of serving this delicacy, it’s genuinely a must visit and a hidden gem.

Waiting of 10-20 minutes was there. The dining area is small and has only 7 tables. The service is quick, menu is limited. The misal is unique, very tasty, not oily, not spicy and has green gravy. It contains poha chiwda, aloo bhaji, shev and matki and served with green gravy and bread slices. The kharwas served is also very good. The taak is tasty. The ambience is oldish since the place is 100+ years old. Place is closed on saturdays
