This Charming Western Town Is Right Out of a Storybook—With European-inspired Architecture and Incredible Mountain Views

"One of the best ways to take in the Gore and Sawatch mountain ranges is by getting on horseback. Just outside of Vail Village, Vail Stables offers one- to two-hour seasonal trail rides, taking riders up steep trails, through wildflower meadows, and into forests filled with quaking aspen trees and lodgepole pines. Plenty of photo ops included." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. Google
Top 10 experience ever! Owner matched the perfect horses for our unexpectedly epic 90 minute ride through breath taking scenery and true mountain trails. Olivia, our guide was movie star perfect with training and charm that won the hearts of everyone.

I had a wonderful experience at Vail Stables! The venue is beautiful and very well maintained. I was really impressed with how much care and attention the staff give to their horses. Our guide, Pedro, was friendly, patient, and knowledgeable. He helped our group of 4 feel at ease from the get-go. The trail itself was breathtaking. Riding through the "Enchanted Forest" (as they call it) with the fall colors all around us was truly magical and unforgettable. It felt like the perfect way to experience the beauty of the area. I especially loved how thoughtful Pedro was in taking my camera (his idea) to capture pictures of our group while we were among the stunning, sunlit, and glowing aspen trees. The only thing I would have loved, and is the reason why I gave a 4-star rating instead of a 5-star rating, is I would have loved just a little more time to connect with my horse, Chester, before and/or after the ride. I would have loved to rub his nose or pat his jaw because, by the end of the ride, I felt bonded. That would have made an already awesome experience even more special. In fact, at the end of the ride and after all tour guests had dismounted their horses (6 total guests with 4 of the 6 being my family), a family member asked if she could pet her horse, Diesel. She was told "no" because "the horses had already been put away"....the horses were standing right there in the corral. WHAT? I'm sure there is a reason for the "why", but "they are put away" wasn't a good enough reason for someone to not walk a horse toward her for some pets. Especially for the price we paid and then a gratuity on top of that. We could have been offered 5 minutes. In summary, all things considered, I had a fantastic time and would definitely recommend Vail Stables to anyone looking for a memorable horseback adventure.

Google
We had a wonderful experience at Vail Stables! From booking with Kim, instructions from Pedro and our amazing guide Gigi, it was a great experience for the entire family! All of the staff was informative, friendly and outgoing. Not once did I feel unsafe for myself or my family. Our horses were sweet and mellow. The goats are fun for all ages. We look forward to coming back again when we are in Vail!

Google
This was mine and my husband’s first time on horses, and we had a fantastic time! Vail stables did a great job with going over everything to make this an unforgettable experience. The staff were very friendly, made us feel safe the whole time, and gave us lots of suggestions for the area. We loved having Taco and Paco for our ride :)

Google
We had a wonderful experience and a wonderful guide (Cade). We did the 1 hour ride and it was the perfect trip with our kids (7 and 9). They were extremely accommodating and the views were incredible. We felt safe the entire time and I was so impressed that my 7 year old with no experience could ride independently. Those horses really know the trails!

Steve W.

Google
Very scenic and no issues with any of the horses. My daughter and I really enjoyed the 1.5 hour ride and we are very inexperienced riders. A great day!

Keke G.

Google
These stables were wonderful! The staff was professional, kind, and helpful. I took my two kids (5 and 9) and they were so great with both of them! My 5-year-old said it was the best day of her life. The trail was beautiful (I think I said this too many times) and the views were spectacular. Afterwards we got drinks and snacks and watched the goats. Getting a shuttle was super easy and convenient. I am so happy we were able to fit this into our trip and will definitely do it again when we get the chance.

Cole C.

Google
We had a great time here! My girlfriend and I did the 1.5 hour ride and it was great. Chloe and Pedro were both really nice and pleasant to work with and have on the ride. At the top of the trail, they stopped and got pictures for anyone that wanted them. Would definitely recommend.

Yelp
The GOAT Happy Hour is the best!!! Runs from 11am- 5:00 pm. The Views from this place are just breathtaking!! I invite everyone who is passing by I-70 Vail to come up and take a rest and enjoy a great atmosphere with the mini goats. They will steal your heart!

Yelp
We did an hour ride with GG and Kayleigh and had a great experience on the afternoon of June 10, 2025! The ladies were amazing guides, we had beautiful weather and an enjoyable ride for everyone across the different skill levels of riders! 5 minutes from the Vail Village and a world away! You won't go wrong!

Margaret H.

Yelp
This was the first time my family had been horseback riding. Our guide, Margo, was great. She was patient with us and kept up a good narration of our route and gentle reminders of safety instructions. She took a magnificent picture of us at the top of the mountain. We would recommend Vail Stables to anyone traveling to Vail. In fact, we talked up our experience so much the following day to a family we met zip lining, they decided to try it themselves.

Yelp
Attended a goat yoga class which is a once in a lifetime experience everyone should try at least once. Some of the goats enjoy the pets and tummy rubs while some are just there for the food. Try to do yoga moves with 20 goats roaming around you and watch out for the poop. Tired or in a hanging position? Find a goat friend to keep you company. Have a cup full of food? Watch the greed kick in as all the goats descend upon the cup. Booking was easy to do online. They do have a shuttle that goes to the transportation center which I recommend rather than driving because you might be covered in poop when you are done and you don't want to get that in your car.

Paige B.

Yelp
We had so much fun at Goga! The goats were precious and sweet and joined in the moves. the scenery is absolutely beautiful and we got some great yoga breathing and stretching in. The stables are easy to get to as well and our instructor was great to work with.

Yelp
This was such a fun trail ride/time spent at vail stables! Feeding the goats after the ride was also a highlight. Our guide (Christian) was very friendly, knowledgeable, and funny! We even got to see the cabin where he lives in the woods ;) bonus points because my horses name was lady Gaga

Yelp
It's a great location, it would help if they were better about their schedule however. I feel like I have to show up continuously to actually know what's happening AKA if they have live music or not and how late they will be open. Please update the website or something in the future.

Yelp
I'm very glad I trusted all the Yelp reviews and made the trek from Breckinridge to Vail to come to Vail Stables. Everything others have said is correct. All the guides and other employees were very reassuring. When my daughter's anxiety acted up that she was going to 'fall off the mountain', the manager (or owner?) came out to reassure her, which was very nice. Our guide (I think his name was Chisholm), took the three of us out on our 1.5 hour guided tour up the mountain and through all the aspen trees. It was quite beautiful along the way. All the horses were very well behaved. We stopped a few times for them to rest and eat. There were plenty of opportunities for pic taking, and he even got some good pics of us along the way. This will definitely be remembered as one of the highlights of the trip. And for the record, nobody came close to falling off the mountain. :)

Dennis V.

Yelp
We took seven people, 4 teenagers and three adults on a ride in the beautiful Vail mountains. The staff was exemplary, the horses and tack in excellent condition, and it made for a great experience for all of us.

Yelp
Came here for the Goat Happy Hour during our vacation. It was the most amazing experience. The goats were total attention hounds and I loved every minute of it. We came with kids, but I think the grown-ups were enjoying it even more. We didn't participate in the drinking part, but I thought it was a unique take on an already fun activity. Easily the best part of my vacation. I was tempted to make a second trip out before we left, but there just wasn't time. They offer horse and pony rides too and there's also a little play area for the kids. Highly recommend stopping here if you're in the area.

Yelp
I couldn't have loved Vail Stables any more! I was here for the "goats and wine" event and it was one of the highlights of my whole trip. The view from the farm is beautiful, the staff is so friendly, and the drink selection was great. The goats are definitely crazy with goat energy so they're not kidding when they give you the disclaimer...but don't let that stop you! A really unique experience in a great place, must visit!

Alec B.

Yelp
We did a 2 hour horseback ride and it was gorgeous! Our guides were amazing and took good care of us! It was an expensive excursion, but well worth the experience.
google avatar

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
This was such great experience! I initially questioned how much yoga we were actually going to get done and I must say this was an AMAZING class! Very free flowing and the teacher was phenomenal! As a yogi, hearing laughter (from goat kisses to other students) was a refreshing and invigorating change. It was also my boyfriends first in-person yoga class and he loved it! If you are staying at the Highline Vail, their shuttle can drop off/pick you up! It's not far from, about 5-10 minutes! GO get yourself to GOGA!
google avatar

Gloria T.

Yelp
I've always wanted to do GOGA (goat yoga) and I am so happy I chose Vail Stables. The staff was wonderful. Betsy, our yoga instructor, was great and she educated us about the goats who were just adorable. Yoga was fine and enjoyable. I love goats so for me it was a thrill. The setting was beautiful.

Ron O.

Yelp
Beautiful scenery, and experience riding through the Aspens. Could have been more explaining and interaction with guides, who only spoke sparingly to check on us, nothing about the area or environment.

Tricia S.

Yelp
Vail Stables is a wonderful place to ride horses, visit the goats and hang for Happy Hour!! Great, Friendly staff there!! We LOVE this Place!

Lauren K.

Yelp
We had an outstanding time! None of our family experienced riders, and we felt very safe on the 1 hour trail ride. Our daughter who is 5 years old, was a bit nervous at first but quickly became comfortable with the support of our very experienced, friendly, and professional guides. We've enjoyed goat happy hour several times. Staff is always kind, welcoming, and extremely helpful.

Doug ..

Yelp
This place is very good. Had a great ride on "Happy" very well trained. My wife's horse was also good. Enjoyed the scenery on the 1.5 hour ride. Having ridden horses numerous times I was pleasantly surprised at the number of yee haw moments we were allowed.. Very fun. Guides were great. Highly recommend. Will go here again if in this area.

Yelp
Hey Ya'll there's a summary at the bottom if you're rushed for time. I don't even know where to start. Lots of my fellow yelpers were correct, this place offered a great horseback riding experience. But the yelper who gave ONE star because she was treated poorly on the phone, she was also 100% right. Our 10 year old rides horses, and she wanted to the entire family to commit to a trail ride while in Colorado. I read that this place had great reviews. I understand why. It was a beautiful, interesting, and even exciting ride. The horses seemed relatively well cared for. The trail guide (maybe Astrid?) was helpful and very sweet. I loved that our 6 year old got to ride with a lead rope right next to the guide. There was man with a really impressive mustache (I say this because I don't remember his name) he was so kind. I have a bad hip, AND I was wearing very tight pants- lol. He brought my horse over to me on the elevated platform, and getting on was no problem. My horse was named Sysco/Cisco. He was in a very big hurry, he wanted to trot and tried going around the other horses. I felt like it was quite the adventure with all of that pep in his step. We rode The Dark Timber Trail. There was a climb, and then just gorgeous Aspen trees. The photos don't even do it enough justice. Breathtakingly beautiful. The most impressive trial ride I've ever experienced. I wondered if I would be bored or at least underwhelmed. Not in the slightest. I had a feisty horse, who was responsive when I did decide to take control. My family had a wonderful time, and I'm glad we decided on the particular place. There was a friendly little miniature horse hanging out by the office that was so affectionate! Followed my kids around, it was so soft, it was hard to convince them to go home. Why 3 stars? WELL.. I've never been treated so rudely and then still decided to plunk down 1, 368.00. I know it's not a huge amount of money, but it's hard to get treated like absolute shit, and still say "Here, thanks for being awful, please take my money" When the man answered the phone, there must have been a crowd in the office (which is a cute tiny shack), I wasn't rude at all- I knew we were flying home soon and I wanted to check to see if we could make this ride work for us. I just said "I'm having a hard time hearing you" and he snapped at me (like a teenage girl) "well why don't you book it online??!" And just slammed the phone down. What in the mantrums was that all about? So, I called back and it just kept going to voicemail. We piled into the car, and I went to book in person. I smiled and said "Hi, we'd like to book a trail ride and I believe you hung up on me" He said nothing. He just stared dead pan straight ahead. No acknowledgement. NADA! The owner was also less than warm or welcoming. I wanted to explain that our kids don't all ride, just one- well she talked right over me. Interrupted me mid sentence. Shut me up AND shut me down. RUDE. It was blatant give me your money, and don't waste a second of my time talking to me. I don't give a rat's ass about their skill level. I'm not here to make friends. I don't care. Fill out the paperwork, submit your payment, and leave. So sorry for the 30 seconds that you had to listen to me. There was no line behind us, no group coming in. When we returned the next day for our ride, we met a women who was helping out, maybe named Chrissy? Anyway, she was extremely friendly. I bought an ice cold beer, enjoyed her sweet smile, and appreciated that she was welcoming. Another turn off. Before the ride, my kids asked if we could buy the advertised horse food. The office staff said "No, you can do that after the ride" Well after the ride, we were told we couldn't buy food because it was for the goat yoga. My kids have animals at home, so they didn't mind. But, there was no emotion or slightest sense "Oh gee, sorry we said one thing and then set you up for disappointment." I'm really grateful that I don't have to deal with smug people on a daily basis because they are just the worst. I am Lord of the stables, and this is my Queen, do not speak to us you lowly peasants, YOU ARE UNWORTHY. IN SUMMARY: Great rides, gorgeous views, and helpful guides. Great for kids and adults Helmets provided Cowboy hats available too SO Rude on the phone Beverages and limited snacks available for purchase They provide a helpful description of what you'll need to prepare for your ride. BOTTOM LINE - Unprofessional because they can be, they're clearly not hurting for business, so I guess some of them find joy in being less than courteous. The bathroom is a porta potty type situation. But the wood shavings keep it smelling fresh in there.

Ricardo M.

Yelp
Our daughters had so much fun on their horseback riding tour. They loved getting to ride the horses, and they especially loved seeing all the animals. They even asked if we could come back and do it again next time we're in Vail.
google avatar

Michaelangelo A.

Yelp
Great location, just a couple minute drive from Lions Head village. The horses were of course beautiful and well behaved for trail riding with kids to Adults. The staff is very friendly. The trail was stirring up the mountain and through the Aspens. My family and I had an amazing time and it was the best part of our 10 day trip.
google avatar

Jodi F.

Yelp
Although the location was a little difficult to access with a big vehicle, it was so worth it! The staff was friendly & welcoming. The yoga area is mostly shaded by tarps, which was great on a warm day. There were about 15 adorable small goats who love to snuggle & for interact. Holly was our bubbly instructor. The "class" was more about playing with the goats & less about yoga but so much fun! Lots of photo opportunities too! Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Nicole E.

Yelp
If this review was based on the experience as a whole, I would really give a quite good one. The ladies and gentlemen that are guides and working with the horses are wonderful. We also had a beautiful trail ride. Our experience with the owner Kim however was simply inexcusable. She was rude upon arriving. Very short and acted Like we were an inconvenience checking in. Later, after my daughter and I were on the trail, my husband had been waiting for someone to start the pony ride with our 4 year old. After waiting about 40 minutes he went into the office to see if he needed to do anything and Kim responded "These damn pony rides. We shouldn't even offer them anymore, it's like Disney closed and Vail opened! Ug, I do not have time for this! " I wasn't going to do anything about it, but received an email today about rating Vail stables and how they would welcome any feedback, good or ugly. I called Kim to address this and she gave excuse after excuse, never fully addressing how she treated my husband. This is a very busy place because it's one of the only close options for horse riding in Vail. The owner does not seem to understand how to treat her customers, and I truly believe if there are enough experiences like ours, people will start finding other places to go.

Josie M.

Yelp
Horses looked healthy & happy. Clean maintained stables. Horses are in good hands I could see how the trainers treated them with love & care which is very important. They were beyond patient with my nerves and fears. I'm not an avid rider so I appreciated their patience! Beautiful views on the trail. Definitely wear sunscreen! Loved the post ride drinks with the baby goats!

Jeanine D.

Yelp
I took my granddaughter and three great-grand kiddos....6, 8 and 11. They loved it!! Everything was well explained by staff and the visit after with those baby kids was so special. Coming back home to AZ they now want goats!!! Staff was entertaining and helpful. So glad they had set up a big tent for parents, etc., Comfy seats, drinks and treats were available.

Yelp
Excellent horseback riding and a fun goat yoga experience. The horseback riding up the mountain within the aspen trees is a gorgeous ride and hike for the horses within white river national forest. Word of advice if doing goat yoga: spray off or anti bug spray on you to keep the flies off of you while you pet/play with the goats. You'll be happy you did. Seems like the flies avoided us since we did. Other than that goat yoga is fun for the entire family!
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
This entire experience was amazing. At the bar, Mark was our first friendly fast. We were able to play with the sweet goats while enjoying a nice cold beverage. But it didn't end there, every one of the barn staff was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. The ride through the aspens was spectacular! Slowly, we went through tight trails and sharp turns. Staff always had their eyes on us and warned us when the horses wanted to trot (so fun!). The 1.5 hrs went by quickly and I did not want it to end. I highly recommend Vail Stables to those of all ages and from all parts of the world. We will visit again!

Yelp
What a fantastic adventure to spend on Vail mountain. We really enjoyed the one hour ride up the mountain. Our guide, Luke, did a great job leading the way and answering all our questions. The trail is a bit narrow, but the views are amazing. This is not for people afraid of heights. The horses are well trained and responded really well to direction from the riders. I would like to return and take the longer trail so I could spend more time riding and enjoying the scenery all around.

Yelp
A great experience! We've used several outfitters in the past (4 Eagle Ranch & Beaver Creek Stables) and all are great services. This time around, we were referred to Vail Stables by our lodging concierge. He mentioned that it was his favorite due to the views, the trail and the overall experience. He was right on target with the recommendation - Vail Stables did not disappoint. We rode the 2 hour Dark Timber trail and had a great time. 2 adults & 3 children (16, 14 & 11); all had a great time and enjoyed the ride. Thank you Vail Stables!

Mary G.

Yelp
Booked a full 18 people for the 2hr and 6 for the 1.5 hour and 1 pony ride. While not inexpensive- this was a great family bonding experience for our reunion. A few of us lived previously in Colorado and we were struck by the beauty of the aspen groove we went through. They do add a mandatory tip for parties above 6- and these guys deserved every cent. They spent a lot of time and energy taking care of us on the trail. They earned it! It was a memorable experience. Thanks!
google avatar

Kristin R.

Yelp
Exactly what we were looking for!! It was our 8 year old triplets' first time to ride horses and it was the perfect experience! We did the 1.5 hour Bear Hollow Trail and we highly recommend! The trail is absolutely beautiful with all of the aspens, fun up and downhill terrain, and stunning views! The horses are very well trained and there's not much to do as a rider. Our guides were a young boy and girl yet clearly very experienced and helpful! We accidentally booked the wrong date but they were able to still take our family of 5 despite already being overbooked. We were so thankful we didn't have to crush our kids' dreams of riding that day! We'll be back for sure!

Yelp
Horses are clearly mistreated. It it is shameful that people support this business. A business that pushes goat yoga and happy hour. Do they even have a liquor license? All that aside, the horse are poorly cared for. They all had ulcers, sun burn and filthy living conditions. The horses were very skittish. Be warned. You will be depending on a horse that is mistreated to carry you. I get all the positive reviews. The Vail valley scenery is beautiful but underneath is a business run by a bad spirited human that mistreats horses and people. There are other places. Avoid this filthy, fly ridden hole. The state should inspect this place and shut it down. There are other options that are better run with healthy animals. Avoid this place at all costs.

Yelp
We went to Goat & Wine--what a fun, unique experience. Goats are healthy and well cared for. Someone commented that they are missing water but missed talking to the bar tender who has an eye on everything. We recommend for all the young at heart.

Cynthia S.

Yelp
The owner was extremely rude and unfriendly to us. We are from CA and her exact words to us were..."do you think you can come in here and do whatever you like?" (We were trying to hike the local PUBLIC trail and mistakenly parked where they didn't want us to. There were no signs so we had no idea. It's called good public relations... just be nice about it?)

Kate P.

Yelp
Made a Day of reservation for 4 kids ( 6 and 8) and 2 adults ( moms.) Had done some research and most places do not allow 6YO. They were wonderful with the kids. ! Best trails with the best views of Vail Village. Hubbys went to goat happy hour with the 3 YO while we did the hour ride. Great experience!

Henrietta G.

Yelp
What a wonderful experience my family had! The horseback riding tour was so fun and the beautiful views! It was a nice long ride and feel we got our monies worth. Riding amongst the aspen trees was spectacular! We did a considerable amount of climbing and then down. I highly recommend the trip! All of the horses we very well behaved for all us amateurs!

Amanda J L.

Yelp
Goat yoga with our kids. Great start to the day, very easy! Would come back for horse riding if we had more time :)

Chelsey S.

Yelp
What a great afternoon listening to live music and taking in the views! Very toddler friendly! Everything is fenced in so you can let your toddler run free around with the baby goats. There are even small ponies that parents can lead their child around the area. Has a vast array of great snacks and drinks for purchase. Great alcohol selection! This place is a hidden gem for sure!!!

Anthony E.

Yelp
I'm a horse owner and am normally wildly underwhelmed when riding at a commercial facility. Vail Stables redefined that and has now become the place I will ALWAYS visit when in Colorado. Kym and her amazing staff (especially Pedro and Clint) gave us the most amazing ride and day that I could of asked for! From the horses to tack, trails and terrain, it was a amazing experience. So amazing that I actually ended up staying and going on another ride the same day!

Julie P.

Yelp
This place was a highlight of our trip! We went to happy hour one evening and then tried goat yoga the next morning. The goats are so fun! The staff is friendly and the view from the stables is spectacular!

Jamie C.

Yelp
So awesome! We took the longer tour and enjoyed every minute. The aspen trees and time spent lost in trees were the highlight. Guides were helpful and kept our two girls busy enough for my wife and I to enjoy our time as well.
google avatar

Dyann C.

Yelp
Another 5 Star perfect day at Vail Stables! My husband and i usually take this 1.5 hour trail ride in September to ride into the Aspen groves. That trip is spectacular, the Golden leaves creating a surreal ride. However this time we came early June to view the mountain flowers. And....WoW! The brilliant green mountain framed by the azul blue sky was highlighted by the wonderful blooms. The staff couldn't be better! Larissa was our guide & is a remarkable and friendly lass. She's the kind of gal you'd want for a daughter in law, lol! If you ever go to Vail, don't miss this magical experience!
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
We came here to do the 2 hour trail ride and were not disappointed. The staff was so accommodating, knowledgeable, and clearly loved their jobs (and the animals). The tour itself was great - you see some amazing views and the trail itself takes you through a few different environments. All in all, I can't recommend it enough
google avatar

Maya K.

Yelp
The lady on the phone was extremely mean. They don't care about you they just care about making money. They are the definition of capitalistic society. If you have to cancel for any reason- they won't have any compassion for you and quickly get defensive. I would never spend money on a service like them- with people who don't care about humans only about money. Fraud.

Yelp
I had a friend visiting from out of town who wanted to do something semi-adventurous. Our Rocky Point trail ride did not disappoint! Everyone at Vail Stables was professional and helpful. We were both a little uneasy getting on our horses, but were reassured that "Jack" and "Peaches" were sweethearts. Both horses were so calm and gentle that we were able to fully take in the views from the trail. Our guide was quick to answer questions and very patient with all guests on the trip. However, the goats at the bar were by far the highlight of the trip! We stayed for a drink just to hang out with the little guys. Overall, this was an amazing experience and definitely a memory for my friend to take back home.

Yelp
The tribe has spoken, and the family said our ride with Vail Stables took the prize for the funnest outdoor activity. We did whitewater rafting, hiking, this that and the other, and the horseback ride was hands down the winner. Great folks. Great fun.

Yelp
I don't think I've ever written a bad review. I wanted to make sure everyone knew how rudely the owner Kim treated me. On their website, it says $200 for adults...clearly a misprint. When I tried to tell her, she told me how busy she was (totally understandable) and that she would need to call me back. I asker her when, and she mocked me saying she had NO IDEA and like I was crazy to even ask her. When she called me back, she immediately starting YELLING at me saying 'IT IS $220 for ADULTS like it or not.' I can clearly pay the $220, I was pointing out an issue with their website. I tried to calmly say this again despite her completely unprofessional behavior, to which she started yelling that she didn't accept my business and hung up. I had already paid for the ride online, and she hung up on me. As a small business owner, I would want to know about a misprint in price. I also know the impact of reviews, so I don't take this lightly. I will not be supporting Vail Stables in the future, nor will anyone around me.
