Yelp
Went in for the first time last Friday for a single process color with a partial/half a head of highlights. I'd booked a double process color appointment online (priced at $96) because I wasn't allowed to book two services online.
Alex was my stylist for the day. He was helpful in terms of understanding that I wanted to get rid of the color I already had in my hair (reddish light brown) and wanted a low-maintenance color that was a lot closer to my natural shade of medium/dark brown so that I wouldn't have obnoxious roots when it starts growing out.
He brought out the book, made suggestions for my base and my highlights. We decided on one for each, and that was that. He came back with a price quote (and I guess this is where I should've put my foot down). But I got quoted something like $120 for my single process (which is actually $75 on their website, and granted length of hair changes things, but my hair is just 1.5-2 inches past my shoulders--nothing insane), somewhere around $120 for my highlights, and $60 for the color gloss, which comes to a grand total of $300.
Fair enough, this is NYC, and it's in a nice salon, but $300 for single process and a few highlights? I mean, if the end result was everything I wanted and more, great! Take my money. But, the end result wasn't anything amazing. The shade he'd suggested was meant to be a shade lighter than my natural color, and let me tell you, it was a shade or two darker than my natural. My roots look practically black now--(and I say this after several washes). The highlights are so subtle and nowhere near as ashy brown as I thought they'd be. And the highlights on my right side are way more subtle/dimmed out than the ones on my left. I suppose it's because the left were left in way longer, and the right were the last to be put in.
I was going to get my hair blow dried afterwards, but that would've cost me an additional $45. Sorry, but after all that, a basic blow dry would've been an additional $45? Is it just NYC, or just this salon? Because I can assure you while living in LA, SF, Sydney, Taipei and Hong Kong (all equally expensive cities as NYC), I was never charged for a basic blow dry after dyeing my hair or doing a balayage or even a basic single process color.
Upon check out, I asked the lady at the front desk if I could use the Yelp 10% off as well, and she just said, "We've already given you the 20% off one of your 3 services for booking online", and she wouldn't apply the Yelp 10%. But she wouldn't tell me why either--was it because one offer couldn't be used with the other? Just tell me, but don't brush me off, please.
Either way, I went home in a bit of a rush because I had errands to run before an appointment that evening, so I ended up blow drying my own hair.
And that's when I found a small patch of weird coloring in my hair on top of it all (see photo below). It doesn't look as obvious in the photo, but looking at it in the mirror as I was parting my hair to blow dry it, it was pretty darn obvious. It simply shouldn't have existed in the first place, regardless of how obvious it is or isn't. Suffice it to say, I'm glad I tried them out, because I'm not sure I'd ever return to get my hair colored there. Their photos and reviews looked absolutely amazing, but for what I paid for ($300+), I was very much underwhelmed and disappointed with the final product.
Tl;dr:
Pros: Sebastian, the guy who washes hair and welcomes you in with a drink and takes your coat, was very pleasant and friendly. The salon is clean and aesthetically pleasing. Alex, my stylist, had a pleasant disposition.
Cons: Quality of finished product not satisfactory/equivalent to price paid, and as such, services feel over-priced.
I just feel like it could've been so much better, but that's just my experience.
