On the Grid : Valhalla's Goat

"Valhalla’s Goat is an independent bottle shop based in Glasgow’s West End. Stocked to the roof with beers, wines and spirits from all over the world, their hoard is a mixture of well known names, small breweries and specialist wineries. The small team of staff have excellent knowledge and give honest opinions on what’s good. Valhalla’s has one of, if not the best selection of craft beers in Glasgow, stocking beers from independent breweries with limited edition runs arriving weekly." - Kenna

Google
Really helped with my gin haul back to the States. They have a massive selection of craft beer, wine, scotch and gins

Google
An eye-popping selection of beers , all shelved by country and genre. Great choice of wines and some unusual spirits also. Staff are keen to help and know their onions. Usually pop in the odd Saturday for fruit Belgians....

Google
Wow where to start; we went here due to the other spirits stores closing early due to weather in the area. And wow I’m glad we did; the ladies here are super sweet and extremely knowledgeable about their drams! I scooped up about 4 bottles of rare scotch’s that can’t be found in the states. If you get to read this review just know that the bottles you sold the tall ginger are going to a great liquor cabinet in Texas and will be tasted with this story each time. Look forward to coming back again!

Google
I have passed by many times and examined the web site but never entered the store or made a purchase. It has an interesting range of alcohol if looking for something different.

Google
Friendly staff that gave great recommendations of an extensive selection of wines. All their picks were fantastic.

Google
Best bottle shop I know in Glasgow. Super helpful staff, always friendly. A great selection of wine and beer, some interesting whisky, but more importantly always had an alternative to the more common spirit/liqueur/fortified wine that you thought you might want. Especially cachaça or mescal or something you might not buy all the time. Great place.

Google
Good selection, slightly overpriced but the only place you'll find some beers in the town. Young female staff member is unpleasant and rude as hell, though. Probably won't be back.

Google
Visited this shop on a whim. Really impressed with the selection and knowledge of the man who helped me! Will be back

Yelp
Often overpriced and unfortunately staffed by an unusual mix of (very welcome) knowledgeable and friendly chaps alongside a few who are defensive and entitled.

Yelp
Wowsers. What. A. Beer. Collection. Valhalla's Goat is packed to the rafters with bottled and canned beers, some of which are fairly unusual finds. The secret is not to hyperventilate, take your time and explore methodically shelf-to-shelf. They're owned by Williams Bros. Brewing who also run the nearby Inn Deep bar, but the shop doesn't only specialise in beers - they have great selections of cider, wine, whisky and other spirits. What was notable about VG was the prices - they were cheaper than we were used to paying, especially for the larger cans of craft ale. Helpful, friendly staff are on hand too - this is definitely a place to frequent to stock up; and that's exactly what we did!

Martin P.

Yelp
A great wine selection however the over all "shopping experience" was that the Owner/Staff member would rather have been anywhere than answering my questions. When buying a bottle of wine for £20+ I would expect at least a fake smile , not the begrudged advice I was furnished with.

Yelp
This is how off licenses should be. Almost enless ales and a wall of wines - to me, that's heaven. I know there's no way I'll ever try them all but I'm happy to try anyway. Usually when I'm here it's for the beer. I can quite happily spend half an hour or more studying the bottles and cans available and chosing a handful to take home and enjoy through the week. The staff are quite happy to make recommendations, whether based on their favourites, on what;s popular, or on what you personally are looking for. Don't ignore the extras either, those chocolates in the counter at the front are just delicious and would make a perfect gift. If you can manage to not eat them all on the way home.

Yelp
Hot damn, this store ruled. My husband and I were touring through Scotland last week and happened upon Valhalla's Goat. It was perfect because not only we were literally drinking ourselves through the country and trying all that we could, it was great to see a store like this and see just how expansive the collection was. Well beyond Scotches and local (or even European) ales and beers, there was a massive and incredible collection of beers and spirits from around the world. From as far away as South America to New Zealand, they've got a little of everything. Even a reasonable-sized sherry collection, to boot! If I lived nearby I'd be here all the time trying new things and learning about beer through the eyes of the shopkeepers. They certainly know what they're doing and the stock and selection is truly outstanding.

Yelp
I have never seen such a selection of independent craft ales in one place before. The choice is simply fantastic. I went in to buy a selection of ales for a gift; you can do a 'pick-and-mix' to suit your tastes, and I easily filled a six-pack with Scottish ales that I'd never even heard of. I now want to go back and do the same as a gift for myself! Not just beer either - the wine selection is pretty inspiring too. Incidentally, the name 'Valhalla's Goat' refers to the Norse legend of Heiðrún, a goat who stands on her hind legs in Valhalla eating the leaves of the tree Lærað. From her udders flow the finest mead that fill a cauldron so large that all can drink from it. So now you don't have to look it up.... :-)

Yelp
Very nice beer store with a massive range of options: all kinds of beers from all kinds of countries.

Yelp
I love this store! Yes it's a bit Hipster-esk but it doesn't stop it from being amazing! Wine, everything you could want, ales, sprits, cigars, chocolates, it's essentially all the hedonistic indulgences that are legal ;) My only two concerns with this beautiful place is 1) Terrified of knocking everything over! 2) Spending all of my money :( I don't think the pricing it too bad. Majority of the wines are more expensive than Tesco but then you get what you pay for! I polished off a delicious Malbec, which was only around £15, but just divine! They have a lot of the popular cigars, and they aren't extortionate. The chocolates....well, they are pretty pricey, which is good really as then you only buy a couple for the taste rather than binge eating.....totally worth it! :)

Yelp
Beeeeeeer.... I need beeeeeeeeer! That's usually what is going though my mind as I head through the door of this most excellent off licence. I thought I would give VG a quick update as last time I gave it four stars and this time I'm gonna go all out and give it five big red stars. What's changed you might ask. Not huge amounts, it's still got great beers, it still does good wine, my mutt is still welcome. All plus points of course but no changes that could earn it the the extra star. The thing that sets them apart for me now is the cases of Williams Brothers that they do at competitive prices. I like the fact that you can get a decent tasting case of beer at an acceptable price if your planning on taking a carryout to a party in somebodies house. I find that this is not always the case in some other specialist bottle shops and this is the reason I keep going back to VH. (They probably did this before when I gave them 4 stars, it's just I had not realised the value of it at the time) Five stars!

Yelp
This place is like a bar, an encyclopaedia & a shop had a baby.. Oh wait that's what it is! Yes the Williams Brothers' shop on Gt Western Road continues to showcase their knowledge (& connections) of great world beer & wine. You'll find the great tapestry of beer (aka the shelves) stocking beers from all over Europe, Japan, New Zealand & the US. Frankly sometimes it's all a little too much, maybe it's the prices (£7 for a bottle??), or maybe it's the realisation that there's still so many more beers to drink, but sometimes I feel a little befuddled by it all (+10 points for fitting befuddled into a review!) Anyway, aside from their global connections, you'll find a good selection of UK beers as well as many more local brews. The Williams' Brothers own label & their Drygate beers are represented in full, including a number of hard to find batches such as the Drygate brewers' project beers & the hanging bat beers. The shop sells a good selection of wine and has weekly tastings should you prefer pinot grigio to a pint of Grolsch. The wine is not your £4.99 or less Californian Rosé (nor is it Buckfast) so be prepared to shell out a bit more for a bottle than you would elsewhere. If beer & wine aren't strong enough, you'll find a good range of spirits behind the counter ranging from small batch whiskies to dangerous looking Central American Ron Anejo (dynamite in a glass). The shop also has a great selection of decadent Belgian chocolate in case you need to sweeten up (nudge nudge..) your other half when you come home with a box full of beer, but only a half-eaten poke of chips, from the chippy next door, for tea. I love, love, love this shop, what makes it all the more amazing is it's proximity to Inn Deep (aka the Williams Brothers' bar) so if you can't get a seat outside, or if you want to buy a bottle of something you tasted earlier, it's not far to hop, skip or stumble to to keep the party going!

Yelp
Mind blowing treasure trove of all things alcoholic. So many independent brewers/ale companies represented, and that's just the pint side of things! Couldn't even begin to rhyme off some of the brands displayed in here, but the stock ranges vastly from popular choices to offbeat, new companies and tastes galore! Absolutely brilliant place to get some unique bottles for birthdays, or if you're looking to take a souvenir of Scotland home with you that goes beyond the usual overplayed bottle of average whisky. Absolutely gorgeous spirits, wines and beers available, staff are friendly and knowledgeable without being aloof or condescending about their wares. Shop is orderly, modern and clean, and the stock is off the charts in terms of how cool and classic it is. Something in here for everyone - even for those of you who are tee total! You can buy Dear Green Coffee and handmade chocolates from behind the counter! Love love love this place, very easy to get absorbed within its walls and leave with 3 bags full (and an empty wallet).

Yelp
Recently re-opened and re-organised from the previous Quel Vin, Valhalla's Goat is just what every craft beer fan in the city will love. Wall to wall beer. I was in this weekend and there is coming close to 250 different bottle choices from all over the world and this number grows by the week. They have selections from breweries I have never seen available in the UK and some great rare bottles from within Scotland itself. There is something for every taste and price range if you are in any doubt just ask their awesome staff. They are closely linked with the Williams Bros brewery so have a great working knowledge of the beers they sell. For those who were fans of the Quel Vin's wine choice don't despair they still stock although slightly reduced a great selection of wines, spirits and their awesome chocolates. There was talk of draught lines being installed to be able to do growler fills in house, which would be great for regular take aways. Not sure how long this will take but hopefully soon. For now lets all enjoy the beers by the bottle load.

Yelp
This place is a powerhouse. High Ceilings, Big shelves, Laden down with massive amounts of beer. If you want to know about the other stuff - go read someone else. There is a lot of beer in here. A lot of beer. UK, European, American - wow. First, I do not know who in here is related to the William Brothers but they have the best prices for Williams Beer around. 1.79 a bottle. That is brilliant. You should be going for just that. Go on you heard me - start walking. But if you need a bit more cajoling. Clown Shoes. Yes, that hard to find Beer Miracle out of Lexington Mass. They have it. Last time I saw this stuff was in a Beer Store in Denver or else in the luggage of a friend coming over from Yankee-Land. I picked a large bottle of Supa Hero - it was so worth it. I hate to tell you about this place but it is not hard to miss. Now you will all flock there and buy all of the good stuff. Well, I don't care - they will get more. I hope.

Yelp
This is an excellent off licence selling some very rare and unique alcoholic beverages. The staff are knowledgable and there are also some good deals to be had too. A great place to stop to grab a beer for the journey from Inn Deep (just a couple of doors down) back home.

Yelp
Valhalla's Goat is a wonderful off-sales for the West End; a perfect combination of pretention and obsession. Fuelled by a passion for beer and a firm belief that beer tastes should be broad and tailored to the evening, company or meal you're enjoying. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, so if ever you're in doubt why not leave yourself in their capable hands.

Yelp
This is by far the best beer selection Glasgow has to offer. Owned by the Williams Brothers brewery (I believe), there's pretty much every beer they brew available here, and then some. Honestly, the choice is simply staggering and I doubt any beer enthusiast could leave here feeling wanting. Some of the beers are a little pricey, but I guess that's the price you pay for quality American, Canadian and other imports; the British beers are around the price you'd pay in, say, Peckhams or the Cave. There's a wall of wines to choose from as well, a noticeably similar range to that of Quel Vin, the shop's predecessor. All in all a great shop, thoroughly recommended.

Yelp
I've been in a few times recently to pick up gifts and treats for myself for Christmas. There is a great variety of beers and wine. I have been Really impressed with the enthusiasm and knowledge of the staff who are easily able to make recommendations based on your preferences and budget. They are also happy to gift wrap your purchase to make it look and feel extra special. Overall a very positive experience and I will be back even though it's a bit out of my way.

Yelp
I only found out about this, almost by accident while surfing through Yelp and other people's bookmarks. See, kids, it pays to be nosy sometimes. I like beer. That's no secret, nor a surprise. Having said that, I like weird kinds of beer, obscure beers that your local paper shop won't necessarily stock in between the racks of Tennents and Budweiser and Carlsberg *ptooie* Truly, this place is Valhalla for the beer lover. I was in today and bought three different IPAs, none of which I've tried before. This is HEAVEN in a can/bottle for me! Luckily (not really, I read about it on their facebook page) today they had a pint glass and bottle opener on offer if you bought a certain beer, so I did and I got my swag. I'll use it later, because that's just how I roll. I could browse the shelves for hours. I probably will by the time I've tried everything I want to try. Also, they do wines and spirits, and confectionery too. If you like the booze, go have a look. The staff were advising a guy on what kind of thing he might like while I was in, so I'd imagine you can have a word and ask any questions you like. Well, beer related questions, obviously. No point asking about Quantum Physics, probably.

Yelp
You might think working in the city centre is a luxury. And you'd be damn right. It totally is, given the places to visit, eat and drink in, and generally just have a wander. However, I have to admit sometimes it just feels a wee bit samey. The main shopping streets are more or less the same as any other UK city really and some of the more interesting places are either too far to walk to during a lunch hour or have been visited more than thrice. There is only so many times one can trek up the Necropolis before looking a bit like a creep. So rejoice for the glory of the Glasgow Subway and my SPT card! With a hop, skip and a seat next to an unimpressed Chinese women, I can be at Hillhead or Kelvinbridge in mere minutes. In the case of this review, you should alight at the latter. I get off at Kelvinbridge far less than Hillhead, mostly because I love a) the Alasdair Gray mural and b) the Oxfam book store. But recently, I discovered (and that's what a shoogle is all about) Kelvinbridge is pretty much right next to Valhalla's Goat; a seriously oddly named beer and wine shop on Great Western Road. The store has a wide selection of Scottish, Irish, North American and European beers and ales, which you just won't find in Morrisons. It allso has a wine, sherry, port etc., section but I have yet to travel to that half of the shop. The drinks are a wee bit pricey but I'm not sure who that responsibility lies with. The likes of Brew Dog drinks are generally dearer anyway. I'd recommend Fyne Ales or Williams Brothers but for something a wee bit more unusual pick up the Smokestack; a distant cousin of Laphroaig whisky. Very peaty with a short burn on the back of your throat. If you're feeling greedy, the small artisan chocolate counter is worth spending a couple of extra quid on. The contreau truffles and mojito cups are damn tasty. I would like it if the staff were a bit more inviting and more ready to chat about beer but as it was, the wee woman (while pleasant enough) was happy enough to watch the world go by. It's a small thing but the amount of beers on offer and the lack of direction from the seller means I am more likely to stick with the same option over and over. I'm the type that needs a bit of a push. So get off at Kelvinbridge, spare the wee bearded homeless man some change and go get some quality ale.

Yelp
Only popped in to pick up a few beers, there is a good range but not extensive with some odd omissions that I don't really understand (No Red Kite Ale, really? I can get that in Tesco!). Wine selection looks ok, and there is plenty of variation making this a good one stop shop for your boozy needs. I'd suggest there are better places for beer, spirits and wine but if you are in this area of Glasgow, it's well worth a visit.

Yelp
They have a good selection of beers, have visited three times and the first two were great. Especially the lady who recommended a lot of stouts when I was first into stouts, really helped. Gave it a star less than five is because the I wasn't even got asked for help at all in my third visit in March and the cashier assistant guy wasn't being nice. He didn't ask me do I want to wrap my beers and when I asked to wrap them he rolled his eyes and been a bit nasty, which happens quite rare in beer stores. Overall a high recommend but totally depends on who the assistant is.

Yelp
I recently bought a selection on beers from here and tonight discovered one (das soundwave) is a month and a half past the bbe. It made it not enjoyable as the hops had mostly lost their impact. The bad experience first started at the till when one of the employees came across very rude when asking me to move along the counter without saying please then proceeding to give the customer being served next to me a discount solely for being chatty. As a shop owner that sells a lot of alcohol and craft beer I am vigilante with keeping track of dates and discounting and making the customer aware if it's past the best before. I would not recommend it to anyone from the service I experienced and a product I paid full price for which was not good quality. I would like to say however the lady serving me and the guy stocking the shop were very nice.

joe j.

Yelp
having lots of beers does not mean ,having a good range of quality one,s,this shop is lacking in a good selection from the world,s greatest and most varied variety on the planet(ie Belgium)and who would want to drink cask beers filtered and gassed up and bottled, heck it gives over several shelves to the now tasteless grey sludge hoegaarden def not a craft beer more a mass produced slick, from the world,s second largest brewing group
