We decided to make a swing by Van Diemans at the waterfront once my wife spotted one of the floating docks was advertising 'ice cream and gelato' instead of fish (which is every other dock there). Given the holiday, there was a little bit of a line, but we didn't wait more than a few minutes before we had made it to the front. The ice cream selection certainly seemed to tend less towards gelato (nothing, to be honest, really screamed 'gelato' right off), but there's a healthy number of choices when it comes to ice creams and sorbets. We ended up sharing a two-scoop cup with leatherwood honey, along with maple & walnut. Both choices turned out to be winners; the honey had a nice, soft sweetness to it (perhaps too much - I would have prepared something that had a little more of the tart sweetness that honey on its own has), while in our other flavor, the walnuts were very lightly candied and provided a nice crunch, and the maple was very subdued and did not overpower the rest of the cup.
I wouldn't say that the ice cream is going to blow you away, and you're not going to find flavors that are highly unique or that you would only find here (although the leatherwood variety of honey is something I have only encountered in Tasmania so far in my life). Nonetheless, it's a fun little shop to visit if you're in Hobart's waterfront, and the ice cream itself is still quite tasty. When it's summertime (like it is now), it's a handy spot to swing by and refresh yourself.
